Registering for the Index is not only necessary for the errand, but also if you plan to move on to year two eventually and participate in events or sports such as Quidditch or Duelling. You register here, but before you can do that, there are some requirements you need to meet.

You need an Encyclopedia Page. It is explained on the page I linked you. Some more explanations for trunk and player stats you can find here and here.

You might also want to check out Races and Abilities you can apply for. For the races you only have one month to apply for after your validation.
