Today was a special day, a chance for a bit of romance or platonic love. It was an opportunity to have a little bit of fun and make room for love in your heart, whether that was a new blossoming relationship or to help grow an old one. Love was a powerful emotion, capable of achieving great things. This event was the push that was required to help those in need to make that first step, to find a bond that they could treasure for the years to come. Maybe people will find their childhood sweethearts here or build the foundation of a bond that only grows.
Perhaps that was too optimistic. Nonetheless, this was a way to escape from the drama and angst, a chance to just have a little bit of fun and have a cute date. And what better location to spend with someone than under the stars?
Entering the Astronomy Tower, students would see the familiar staircase decorated with floating paper hearts that gently spun around in the sky. Following the trail of hearts up the staircase, they would enter into the Astronomy classroom at the top of the tower. The entrance to the classroom had a large arch made from paper flower roses in different shades of pink and red around it.
Walking through the arch, people will be greeted by a very different decor than they were likely used to seeing at the astronomy tower. Heart garlands were draped on the edge of the tables and paper hearts floating in the room randomly. There was a sign on the side, saying "please take one". In smaller text, it also said, "You may take up to one of each if you would like".
By the sign, people would see three main options. The first was a vase of pink roses. If anyone looked carefully, they would notice that the thorns had been cut off from the stems. Taking out a rose, they would notice a small label attached to the stem. The second choice was little bags of sweets. A transparent bag holding a small variety of heart-shaped chocolates or sweets. There was ribbon around the bag that tied it shut and a blank label on each bag. The third choice was an eggless cupcake, with glitter icing on it that looked like a rose. On the cupcake case, there was a blank sticker label here too.
When someone took one of the items (or multiple), the blank labels would start to change immediately. They would see words start to form on them. It would give them a number. That was it. A number.
Looking up, they would likely spot a room full of picnic blankets scattered around the area. There was also a foil heart-shaped balloon that came in white, pink or red. They had a small weight on the bottom of the strings to prevent them from flying away. On either side of the balloon itself, they would see a number.
It was clear that they were supposed to go to the respective number to meet their blind date.
On finding their matching balloon, they would look down to see there were two cushions on top of the picnic blanket, with a hamper in the middle. The hamper itself contained a variety of snacks: biscuits, chocolates, scones, cream, jam and cake. There were also some small sandwiches, in case anyone wanted something a little heavier. For drinks, there was a small teapot of hot water that was magically kept hot in the hamper. They would find a small selection of teas, as well as hot chocolate powder in the hamper too - with sugar and milk. For those who preferred a cold drink, there was also water and juice available.
It was definitely on the colder side up in the tower. Being wrapped up in a coat and some gloves would probably be ideal. Hats and scarves would be a decent idea too. After all, the sun had set and it was the middle of winter. However, the sheer number of people around as well as the fireplaces helped to add a bit of warmth to it that prevented it from being freezing. People would not need to wear snow boats as it was not freezing by any means. However, it was definitely suggested that people dressed up warm for the evening.
Sitting down and looking up, they would see the beautiful starry night sky showering over them. Anyone who was good at Astronomy might be able to name some of what they see.

Elisabeth walked to an empty picnic blanket with four, instead of two, empty cushions around it. This is the picnic mat whose number she had picked randomly earlier.
Honestly, she was kind of glad that she would meet three other people today - an odd-numbered group usually proved to be a disaster, with one person mainly only talked to another and thus leaving one without none to speak to.
However, the Hufflepuff was slightly concerned as well - group communication was not her strongest suit. She was better in one-on-one conversations because that way, she could focus her whole attention to her speaking partner, and she would know when her turn to speak was - group conversation usually means a game of volleyball where someone would speak and then another person would simply chime in without going in order. They did not wait for their turn, nor did they care if someone in the group had not spoken yet, at least this was so according to her past experiences.
Either way, the Asian-Latinx girl was glad that she was the first to show up at this table. Joining an ongoing conversation was, truth to be told, a nightmare for her. It would be like cutting the queue for her. Or, she was the second to arrive, then there was a chance that she would be the one who was expected to start a small talk such as, "Oh, hello. I wonder if this seat is taken. Have you been waiting long?" No, that would not be her specialty, either.
On the other hand, waiting for someone to approach and converse was easier. Elisabeth preferred this.
She sat down, hoping that she would find new friends tonight, and while waiting for the others the Belizean took a copy of The Girl from the Coast from her handbag, immersing herself in the novel.

Callie didn't rate Valentines day very highly. In truth the whole idea of love to the preteen was generally disgusting and something she didn't at all have time for in her ever so important twelve year old life. However what did capture her interest about Valentines day was the prospect of chocolate and the glorious sales on the sugary stuff that followed afterward. Besides this year she'd decided to sow a bit of mischief by signing up Elias and Thomas, a pair who bickered constantly, as each others crushes. Some might've called the act cruel but for Callie it was a devilishly ingenious form of entertainment. The only real downside came in having to trek up the stairs of the Astronomy Tower.
As she scaled the tower Callie played a kazoo she'd been torturing her housemates with over the past week. Her admittedly annoying tune only ceased when she took notice of the strange little roses but more importantly the bag of sweets which she swiftly scooped into her hands. She didn't even take a look at the label before tossing the contents into her mouth and returning to her concert for one on the kazoo. However eventually she took notice of the number and wandered around for a while in the pursuit of her assigned number all whilst playing the kazoo.
"Stupid glasses!" She complained whilst forcing her scarf down to reveal the fogged up spectacles. "Is that..oh hey!" Callie grinned as she finally spotted the right number and proceeded to wander over with kazoo firmly in hand. Instead of greeting the unfamilar girl with a normal greeting she instead made her presence known with a firm toot of the kazoo. "Hey, hey!" She eventually greeted with a toothy grin as she took her place on the cushion. "I'm Callie, pleasure to make your accquaintance." Callie even added in a mild bow after introducing herself. She seemed to punctate the gaps inbetween her sentences with a strange tune on the kazoo. "Oh hey, I know that book! Super good right? Even if there is a tragic lack of dragons and everyone knows all brilliant literary masterpieces have dragons."@Jacob Hawthorn @Jess Malters @Elisabeth Erner

Jacob didn't really know why he had signed up for this stupid event, and now he was feeling pretty uncomfortable.
Most of the students were all groomed and dressed up, whereas he was just wearing his usual winter cloak; he hadn't even showered that day ("I showered yesterday, it should be fine") and his hair was a mess.
He reluctanctly climbed the stairs to the top of the astronomy tower, walked through the arch and to his relief some food was waiting for him next to a sign he completely ignored, just like the roses. He snagged three bags of sweets and a cupcake ("I can't carry more than that, I'll come back to get more later"). When he noticed that a number had appeared on the labels, his mouth was already smeared with chocolate.
The balloon with the corresponding number was floating above one of many picnic blankets. From a distance, he spotted the hamper first ("More food for me") and only after a couple dreamy seconds he noticed that two girls were sitting on the cushions.
He was still a bit uncomfortable, but the amount of delicious food was calming his spirits.
He recognised one of the girls, Callie: she was in the Duelling club, he'd seen her and Baines kick some Gryffindor butt before. AND she had a kazoo. One simply can't get more interesting than that.
The unfamiliar girl didn't have a kazoo ("What a pity"); on the other hand, Jacob thought, she was very attractive: she looked pretty under the moonlight, and her manners were as elegant as her dress.
Channeling all of his manly charm he fiercely walked up to the blanket, with the sudden realisation that he didn't know how to introduce himself.
Just like a bird shows off its feathers and a lion shows off its strength, Jacob's brain decided it was time for him to show off his "cultural" knowledge. Without even saying hello, out of the blue, he turned to Callie and Elisabeth and said, with a big chubby smile:
"You know what? I think we're gonna be friends. Special friends. And when I'm with friends, I like to have fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun!".
The "fun" innuendo was so loud and glorious that a dozen of eyes stared at Jacob in admiration... or so he thought. Everyone obviously knew what he was quoting... right? ("Yeah, that's totally not awkward")
"Nice to meet you, I'm Jacob" he mumbled whilst eating more sweets and smearing his face even more.

Involuntarily, the eleven-year-old Hufflepuff winced and jerked her head aback slightly, surprised from the girl's Muggle device and the boy's shout at the multiple words of "fun". Oh, all right, so it seemed that she had two extrovert companions tonight. Hopefully they were neither pushy nor nosy.
After managing to control herself, the Hispanic-Asian girl straightened her head again and introduced herself. "My name's Elisabeth," she said in a friendly tone. "First year. Hufflepuff."
Since Callie made a remark about The Girl from the Coast, Elisabeth replied, "It's my first time reading this novel and I haven't finished it yet, so I'm afraid I still don't know how good it is. My mamá said it did make readers think, though." The second-year had also mentioned about her love for fictional dragons, but Elisabeth did not know many stories with dragons in it save for some ancient Chinese folktales, so she decided not to say anything about it except she was asked further.
The second student who came after Elisabeth, a boy, did not say much except introducing himself as Jacob and showing how much he was interested in food, so Elisabeth simply sent him a friendly smile. He reminded her of Grizzly Bear from the Muggle show We Bare Bears, and now she was interested in finding out just how similar the two were.
There was still one empty cushion. Who would the new student be? The Hufflepuff half-hoped it was a quiet boy so Jacob would not be awkward, and so she herself too could have someone who preferred quietness around.
But either way, things did not look bad so far. Both Callie and Jacob looked friendly and carefree, unlike some pre-teens who only came to gatherings in order to pick a fight or create a drama.

Jess smoothed her hands over her jeans, trying to smooth out the wrinkles that only she, in her nervousness, could see. The girl had spent a while trying to figure out what to wear that day, if she was being honest, and had settled on something vaguely Valentine's Day themed yet not at all over the top. She was trying too hard, to be sure, but that didn't mean that everyone who saw her that day had to know it. In the end, the girl had settled on a pair of black jeans, some white vans, and a cropped plain red sweatshirt with a white stripe running down each sleeve. She also had a thin shirt on underneath the red top, of course, to protect from the cold of the Astronomy Tower and the uncomfortable feeling of eyes on her bare stomach.
With one final smooth of the wrinkles that weren't really there, Jess started up the stairs to the tower, her mind too full of worry to notice or appreciate the area's decorations. This was a Valentine's Day event and she had heard around the castle that it would include blind dates as its main focus, so it stood to reason that Jess would be spending her evening with a boy that she may or may not know. But what if she didn't like that boy? What if he didn't like her? This day was known for being romantic, so would she be expected to act like she liked him anyways? Would she be expected to kiss him? Jess had never even so much as held hands romantically with a boy, so she sure hoped not. Unless the boy was cute and nice and smart and charming and someone that she actually liked, of course, but she doubted that that would actually happen. Well, maybe it could. She could hope.
As she entered the room, the first thing that caught the Hufflepuff's eye was a large sign, instructing her to take one of something. After a moment of consideration, Jess reached out and grabbed a bag of candy. From her limited knowledge of romantic relationships, the boy was typically the one to give the roses to the girl, and the cupcakes could prove too messy to eat in public. Plus, Jess intended to give her object to her date anyways, and she had yet to hear of anyone who didn't appreciate a nice collection of chocolates. Turning the bag over, the girl noticed a small, shimmering label on one side of it, and watched with interest as a number appeared on it.
Glancing around, she realized that there were a number of picnic blankets spread out all over the room, each with its own balloon and number. Checking her candy bag once again to make sure she had read the number right, Jess slowly walked over to the picnic blanket she guessed she was meant to spent her time at.
As she got closer, though, the girl stopped. The blanket she was walking towards was already occupied, though by three people instead of a couple. With her there, there would hardly even be space for anyone else to fit in the area. Based on that, then, she and the rest of these kids were the only ones meant to sit there. Or, at least, Jess hoped that that was what it meant. Fact of the matter was, the Hufflepuff had been expecting to spend this evening alone with a boy, but now it seemed they would be crammed together with another group. Was this a double date? Jess actually recognized one of the girls from the Costume Party, Elisabeth, and thought she may have seen the other one around Hogwarts before, so she guessed from her earlier conversations with them that having a double date with the two wouldn't be too bad. That was, assuming that they were there together. Based on the nature of Valentine's Day and the fact that four spilt evenly into two groups of two, though, Jess was fairly certain that this was the case.
"Hey, um," she said hesitantly as she approached, confident in her analysis of the situation yet unwilling to actually ask if she was right. "My number label thing said I'm meant to be here, so hi. Do any of you know why there are four of us here, instead of just a single pair?" Glancing at her picnic mates, Jess noted that one of the girls was holding what appeared to be a kazoo and Elisabeth seemed faintly uncomfortable, but she decided not to wonder about that too much for now. Whatever was making the girl react that way, Jess was sure she would experience it herself soon enough.

Callie hadn't had much of an opportunity to properly accquaint herself with her fellow Ravenclaw although she recognised his face well enough. Most of the time Callie was too busy buried in homework or pesting Thomas and Elias help her practice duelling spells to be overly social anyway. "Oh hey!" She greeted Jacob with a cheerful toot of the kazoo even if she couldn't entirely place what he was referencing. It sounded familar but Callie couldn't quite pin a name to it. "Hey save some for me! The free sweets are the only reason I signed up! Plus witness Elias and Thomas freak out when they realise I signed them up as each others crush. They're probably going to argue or admit their undying love for each other. I'm not sure which yet." She let out a light laugh before similarly delving into the sweets on offer albiet in a less messy fashion compared to Jacob. "I'm probably playing a dangerous game considering I practiced Cantis on Thomas the other week...but it's fine! We're duelling partners so he has to put up with me."
Before she could steal anymore chocolate Callie found her focus stolen away by the new arrival in the form of Jess. Compared to Callie she put a considerably more effort into her dress for the evening. In truth it was doubtful Callie had even gone to the effort to brush her hair if you paid attention to the curls hidden by a carefully placed beanie. Similarly most of Callie's tiny frame was buried beneath her winter jacket and scarf. Her shoes were also in an odd state with the previously white sections now an odd cream thanks to the abuse they'd gone through. The only truly prestine aspect of Callie's attire seemed to be her glasses thanks to their repeated exposure to the repair charm. "Oh yeah, that is weird compared to the others.."Callie agreed as she looked around at the other groups. "Screw it right? Maybe it means we've got more chocolate to go around!" She held up a tube of jellybeans and shook it as if to emphasise her point further.
For a while Callie sunk into silence as she watched the stars hanging above. Ever since becoming friends with a certain Phel Atwood she had a new appreciation for the world beyond earth and could even pick out a few constellations now. "Oh hey you can see some constellations from here!" She eventually piped out whilst pointing out a few. "That one is Lyra, it represents some super old musical thingie. Cool right? Oooh and that one is Cygnus! He got sad over some guy who died and dove into some river to collect the remains. Gods were impressed by his devotion or something so they made him a swan in the sky! Kind of an awful reward if you ask me."

Jacob laughed freakishly loud at Callie's words, spinning his head around to try and catch a glimpse of Elias and Thomas. "They're definitely going to admit their undying love to each other - and I am most definitely not going to spread the rumour that they are currently dating..." He smirked, handing Callie a bag of sweets as a sign of respect for the brilliant idea.
Despite the fact that Callie's presence seemed to somehow put Jacob at ease, and Elisabeth turned out to have a lovely attitude, he found it very unusual and weird to be alone with two girls in a supposedly romantic night; he was looking forward to meeting the person the fourth cushion belonged to, surely a boy... hopefully a funny one, but any kind of boy would be good.
"There's a saying that goes: He travels best who travels with another boy... yeah..." Jacob thought, proud of his endless supply of ancient wisdom.
The surprise in Jacob's eyes when another girl joined the group was almost as big as the care that that same girl seemed to have put into her appearance.
"Wait, a girl... but this means..." Jacob thought to himself, a light bulb lighting up on his head: "Oh, two of them must be lesbians! I'll have to find out who my date is then! Detective Sherlock Jacob on the case!"
Jacob's cunning never failed to manifest, even in situations as complex as this one... he was always somewhat of a genius. He did consider other plausible scenarios ("Maybe she's actually a boy), but his sixth sense told him that his first hunch was 100% right.
Jess, unlike Callie and Elisabeth, felt a bit scary: right after he greeted her rather formally ("Hello, how are you" is incredibly formal for the boy's standards), he cleaned the stains of chocolate all over him with a napkin and changed posture, as though she was going to tell him off otherwise.
For a while Jacob sunk into silence watching Callie watching the stars and trying to trace where she was pointing, but all that he was seeing were sparkly dots randomly thrown on a black canvas.
"I can't see any Lyras or Cygnuses... where exactly are they... can you help me spot them? OH- there's a song called the Lyrebird, it's a great song. Maybe they should merge those two constellations together and make a super cool constellation named Lyrebird..."

Jacob, Jess, Elisabeth & Callie

The fourth and last student for their group entered, and it turned out to be Jess Malters, a fellow Hufflpuff. Elisabeth had met Jess before, even though just briefly, at an interschool costume party last October. The part-Veela could recall that at that time, her classmate was dressed up as an angel; she was also good friends with Gryffindor Akari Kato who went to the interschool ball with Elisabeth's dance partner's best friend.
Jess wondered why there were four of them instead just two, and decided to ask this question to the other three. Somehow, both Callie and Jacob seemed to have missed her enquiry and thus gave the first-year no satisfying reply. It was at that point that Elisabeth decided to try giving her an answer.
"Um... because the committee wants us to learn that love should be given to as many people as possible and not just to our inner circle?" she guessed randomly. "I mean... you know... there's more about love than just Hollywood romance. There's love between family members... between friends... even love given to strangers like through charity..." She completely forgot that Jess might not be familiar with the Muggle world in general and Hollywood in specific.
And then, feeling that her answer might sound unconvincing or even lecturing the other girl, Elisabeth blushed and stared down at her lap, slightly embarrassed by her own words.
But the Ravenclaws had started to admire the night sky and tried to identify constellations, something the Hispanic-Asian girl considered fun. She wanted to join them, and did not want Jess to feel excluded, so she invited this potential new friend, "Let's join us identifying the constellations! Can you find any? I haven't."

"Now that would be a particularly devious thing to do." Callie let out a bright laugh as she leaned back on the palms of her hands. For her the idea of Thomas and Elias dating never failed to be funny given how frequently the two argued. "Although I feel obligated as their friend to proclaim that I never heard you say such a thing." Callie gladly accepted the bag of sweets and wasted very little time in getting stuck into it's contents. It was safe to say the way to Callie's heart was very much rooted in food and sugar.
Every so often whilst she tossed various sweets into her mouth Callie pulled her scarf back down after getting a brief appetiser of wool. "He who travels best travels with another boy?" She couldn't help but let out a laugh at the very notion. "Is that meant to be wise?" Callie managed to respond inbetween her laughter. "I think you need to reassess your idea of wisdom there, Jacob."
For a while Callie contented herself with eating sweets whilst watching the night sky only for her brief moment of calm to be destroyed by Jacob's proclimations of lesbians. Were other people really taking this whole valentines day thing seriously? Callie herself only signed up because of the chocolate! The whole question of her own romantic preference wasn't something she afforded much time to as at the end of the day she was only thirteen and subsequently cared very little. These days school and duelling club tended to take up the vast majority of her attention and time. "Detective Sherlock Jacob should probably clean the chocolate from his face before he goes sticking his nose in other people's business." She remarked with a laugh before turning her gaze skyward once more. "Love is a vague term anyway." Callie nodded, clearly in agreement with Elisabeth. "I prefer thinking about duelling more than all that super vague mushy stuff. Need to keep up my winning streak! You know?"
"They're constellations! At first glance they don't really look like anything but when you connect a bunch of stars together? It's clear as day!" To demonstrate her point Callie helped point out the stars which connected to form Cygnus. Afterwards she fished a pen from her pocket and etched out the constellation on a stray wrapper and held it to the sky to help point out Cygnus even further. "Sure it's a bit of a strange swan..but it's a swan nonetheless!"@Jess Malters @Elisabeth Erner @Jacob Hawthorn
