Scared of the Dark
(Listen until 1:00 if you want :>)
The floor. Shoe steps echoed across them. The cold, marble floor.
The walls. A muffled noise bounced off them. The rough patterned walls.
A girl. Her body crumpled on the floor, her back pressed to the wall and knees held to her chest. A small sob wracked her frame. A sniff was heard as she wiped her nose and blew her bangs out of her eyes.
A box. That's what the halls felt like to her. A gigantic box. Twists and turns with endless possibilities. The school was big, but now it seemed considerably larger.
It had been a little over a week since winter break had ended. Or possibly more? Time had escaped her, it was meaningless now. Being the stubborn person she was, Annie refused help from anyone and everyone. She simply wanted to be left alone. If looks of pity were sent her way she would turn away and avoid them at all costs. Maybe she was bitter or sad? Yes those things were true but above all else, she was scared.
It felt like first year all over again but 10 times harder. It was lucky if she even showed up to her classes at this point. Being late wasn't a surprise to her professors, although she could tell they wanted to help her she just waved them off. How was she still making grades at this point? Not very well was the answer. Charms was thrown out the door for being unable to do the correct wand movements. Potions, well that would just end horribly for everyone and she didn't even start with Quidditch. A pang struck her chest at the thought.
Everything got screwed up because of one stupid event. "SCREW CHRISTMAS! IT MESSED UP EVERYTHING!" The brunette screamed into the supposedly empty hallway before letting out a huff of annoyance. She laid her head back against the wall and closed her eyes (not that it made much difference) praying that sleep or something would come to her to distract her from her thoughts that constantly swarmed her brain.

Scared of the Dark
Rose walked down the corridors, lost in thought. She wasn’t really going in any general direction, but maybe she was on her way towards the library. Rose had been very indecisive ever since the break ended. Oh, the break had been wonderful. Amazing. She had spent time with her siblings and her mother, her extended family, and- the best part?- Eyre. He had stayed over the entire break. But that wasn’t what was on her mind right now.
Her mom had a boyfriend. No- no- her mom did not have a boyfriend. Her mom had a fiancé. The night that she had met her mother’s former boyfriend, he had proposed to her. And, without hesitation, without checking with her children, without even thinking about how awkward it would be for Rose and her siblings to have a stepdad and stepsiblings. Yes- he was also a single parent and just happened to be the father of one of her very best friends- Henry Knight. Rose had only seen him in classes so far, but they hadn’t gotten a chance to talk about what had happened over the break between the two of them- there just hadn’t been time. It wasn’t like she was avoiding him or anything.
Her mother had a fiancé. Rose was going to have a stepdad- and three stepsiblings, too. It still didn’t feel real yet. It still didn’t feel like reality. It just felt… like a bad dream, or a hallucination she had. Something her mind had made up, and she would wake up any second now. Rose wasn’t paying attention to her surroundings, and she didn’t notice the girl curled up against the wall.
“SCREW CHRISTMAS! IT MESSED UP EVERYTHING!”
Rose jumped violently- it had startled her really bad. For just a couple of seconds, her heart pounded as she looked around for the source of the sound. Six or seven paces away- the girl. The brunette. She looked miserable. Rose couldn’t say she disagreed with her, though. “You can say that again,” she said sarcastically. It really had. Rose had actually been doing okay through the month of December. She had been doing fantastic, really. And now she was so unsure of herself. An unrelenting aura of simply being sad hung around her.
