Beside her was a young woman with long brown-blonde hair, laughing. This was her sister.
"Ana," said little Cal, "Do the pig again!" Anastasia scrunched up her face, the end of her nose already turning a pale pink and taking on the shape of a snout. She snorted, and her little sister giggled hard. "Now the chicken!" And, to Cal's delight, her big sister's face became the beak of a hen. The back door creaked open and a toddler with strawberry blond hair came hurdling out the door. "Ma-aud!" protested Cal, but Anastasia scooped her youngest sister up in her lap and blew a raspberry on her tummy. "Why hello there, little Maudie! Maud shrieked and shoved her finger into her oldest sister's eye, giggling with that twisted sense of mirth that only toddlers can posses.
Ana's hands shot to her now-watering eye, and she blinked in pain. Her younger siblings held their breaths, waiting to see their sister's reaction. But after a few seconds Anastasia started laughing uncontrollably, and she gathered her sisters into her arms and they laughed with her.
And in that moment, Calypso felt like nothing in the world could ever go wrong.
"And those who were seen dancing were thought to be
insane by those who could not hear the music."
