APPEARANCE

Despite her small frame, Karlina holds herself with an air of silent power. She is most often described as intimidating and arrogant, which, depending on who you ask, can be seen as an understatement or an exaggeration. With a height of 4'9" and a solemn expression, she can easily be overlooked in a crowd, but anyone who is ever on the receiving end of her withering stare would struggle to forget her.

Karlina's warm brown hair falls around her shoulders and a fringe covers the dark outline of her eyebrows, often hiding her grey eyes too. It's rare to see Karlina with her hair tied up, for she almost always lets it hang loose in order to cover her face, though sometimes she styles it out of necessity or comfort.

People are often surprised by Karlina's strength; her small, seemingly-delicate build holds an unexpected amount of power, both physical and mental. Even in the earlier years of her childhood, Karlina appeared quite able to swing a punch and cause damage. She took her mother's advice to "be strong" rather literally, and starting from the age of nine, Karlina learned how to properly defend herself. Out of all her talents, the ability to fight back may be the one she considers most valuable.

PERSONALITY

Karlina can be cold and rude, and when provoked, surprisingly aggressive. She has often been compared to the likes of a wild animal: unpredictable yet intelligent, with the sole concern of self-preservation. What she does, Karlina probably does for herself, and any relationships she develops with others are likely to be just for show. However, she has a tendency to get attached to a select few people, in which case she would protect them almost as fiercly as she would herself. People can't really live off of loneliness, after all.

Karlina's perception of the world is cynical and gloomy, and she has decided that the only way to push through the cruelty of everything is to fight against it in whatever way she can. She has a sort of desire to be mean and stand-offish, though not necessarily because she wants to be that way, but rather because she feels compelled to act like that. It stems from her perception of the world and a feeling that if she retaliates with her own cruelty, it'll somehow be better. Or something along those lines, she hasn't quite got it all figured out yet.

When judged by her other attributes, Karlina is expected by many to be hot-tempered and lacking restraint, but in reality, she isn't someone whose anger is explosive. Despite some occasional acts of aggression, Karlina is fairly calm and reserved; she doesn't like to make a fuss if it's not necessary. She commands herself with pride and strength, which is very obviously reflected in her frustration and fury. When she gets angry at someone, it's in a way that suggests she could destroy them with a single look and nothing more.

Karlina is resourceful and sees the use in cutting corners. Perfectionism, in her opinion, has the power to cause hell in one's mind and drive a person to insanity, so she avoids it when possible. Of course, there's something to be said for doing the job well, but Karlina believes she is just as capable of creating something of high quality by taking a shortcut than she is by vexing over details. Karlina can be a risk-taker at times; she's willing to sacrifice it all if the cause is good enough... that is, unless sacrificing it all becomes too much to ask. Because of this, Karlina works hard to ensure that she is a capable individual with a number of tricks up her sleeve, so that if the time comes for her to make this decision, she is completely prepared to do so.

Despite coming from a pure-blood family, Karlina has very little fondness for magic. There's something about it that feels very wrong to her, as if it weren't really meant to exist. Karlina has kept her opinion of magic close to her chest, revealing it to no one, no matter how close. Even her mother knew nothing about this. In fact, Karlina was particularly reluctant to reveal this opinion to her mother, who in any other situation would be the only person aware of Karlina's secrets. The girl could see how her mother changed at the mention of magic: she would come alive in a flurry of childlike excitement, with awe in her eyes and wonder on her lips. Karlina would have kept any number of secrets just to see that transformation.

Karlina is actually quite empathetic once one looks past her stony façade. If she allows herself to, Karlina experiences emotions very strongly, which scares her into suppressing them. She believes life would be much simpler if it were easy for her to be selfish and rude, but there's always a contradiction within her that makes her bitterness difficult. Karlina's emotions can be so overwhelming at times that enduring them can feel like giving in, and if there's one thing that Karlina holds above all else, it's her desire to keep fighting. She would prefer to continue seeing the world through black and white than begin to see colors and have everything come to and end because of it.

THE MOREAUS

The Moreaus can trace their lineage back to a small city in France, which is now in ruins. Members of the family reside mostly in France, with some living in England and some in Germany, though it has become somewhat of a tradition to send their witches and wizards to Beauxbatons Academy of Magic in order to honor their French ties, regardless of whether they live in the country or not.

The Moreaus are bold and proud, even if they lack reason to be. Their name is practically meaningless in the Muggle world, except when mentioned as the maiden name of Nicolette Ackerman, but even in that context it means very little. However, the Moreaus are a name in the wizarding world, even if the name is a vague one, and their closeness to the Ackerman family is certainly the reason behind the recognition they receive. Still, their connection to the Ackermans served as a step to a greater future for them, since attending events hosted by the Ackermans has introduced them to other families and allowed them to slowly build their reputation.

This alliance between the Ackermans and the Moreaus began with a trading agreement between their ancestors and quickly developed into a close friendship, which the two families still uphold to this day. In fact, the Ackermans have been extremely helpful whenever the Moreaus need them to be, and though they can't offer that much in return, their loyalty and the history between the two is usually enough not to leave them in debt.

The Moreaus are a secretive family, often going out of their way to keep details about themselves hidden. They are generally thought of as cunning and observant, which is rumored to be the reason why the Ackermans still value their loyalty so highly, though no one really knows for sure. Nicolette's rise in fame revealed the family to the public more than they felt comfortable with, and it was no surprise when gossip about them began to circulate. Nicolette's sudden appearance and the lack of knowledge about her past put theories into people's minds, and her extensive knowledge of dark magic only encouraged them. Eventually, people came to think of the Moreaus as a wild card of sorts, with some avoiding them due to rumors of dark forces at work and others intrigued by the secrets they hold.

Nicolette Ackerman, sometimes still referred to as Nicolette Moreau, was an excellent witch and an even better pianist; her performance on stage exceeded that of any other. She was famous for the swiftness with which her fingers moved across the keys and the emotion that she put into her music. People claimed her talent was unmatched, though it remains unknown whether it was truly the music that made them think so or her staggering beauty that bewitched them. Much like her daughter, she was a cold woman in appearance, but this first impression was only a fair representation of her prettiness and not of her personality, which was charming and not at all unappealing. Nicolette was a sly, cunning creature, whose motives would often slip by unnoticed as she distracted people with her amiable qualities. She could get away with just about anything when utilizing her connections and her intelligence, though Nicolette was notorious for biting off more than she could chew. Over the years, she did her best to overcome the carelessness with which she sometimes handled things and, for the most part, was successful in doing so, but there still were times when this unfortunate habit resurfaced and she had to deal with the consequences. Not only was she known for her musical talent, but also for being well-versed in the Dark Arts. It's not exactly clear what Nicolette's life was like before marrying into the Ackerman family, but it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume her past was a rather dark one. It was extraordinary how she could describe curses and other dark magic in great detail, and people often wondered where she acquired such thorough knowledge of the Dark Arts. Nicolette, of course, claimed that it was all knowledge learned out of curiosity and for purposes of self-defense, but the sheepish smile on her face suggested otherwise. Nicolette died on the 13th of June, 2018. The cause of her death remained a secret from the public and even from close friends of the family. In fact, the only people who knew the reason behind Nicolette's untimely passing were her husband, her daughter, and a select few family members beside them. Word got out to the wizarding world that she had been killed by magic, and though this remains unconfirmed by the Ackermans, those rumors are true. A curse was responsible for Nicolette's demise; it was the price for her betrayal many years ago and she had been forced to pay it.

THE ACKERMANS

The Ackermans are a renowned pure-blood family that has existed in England for centuries. Family records date back to the 1600s, though few people bother to read them due to the sheer amount of information they hold and the barely-legible writing. Nevertheless, there is enough talk about the Ackermans to get oneself acquainted with them without the help of the records, and those who live in the area are likely to have stumbled upon the name several times.

The Ackermans' fame stretches across both the wizarding and Muggle worlds, well-known for their academic success and their inherited riches, which many people marvel at. The family has produced a number of scholars, philosophers, and poets who have embellished the Ackerman name with their achievements. They have, of course, also produced a number of 'failures', who have few accomplishments to speak of and are kept away from the eyes and ears of the public to save the family's reputation.

The Ackermans have plenty of useful connections, which they aren't shy about utilizing; the family has always believed that, as long as hard work is at the core of one's achievements, no harm can be done by facilitating the process of reaching them. It's not surprising that the family's connections are strictly in the realm of the wizarding world, for many of the leading figures still hold on to somewhat-outdated beliefs that Muggles are below them and think it too big of a risk to get too involved with them.

Although the Ackermans are certainly open to forming alliances, their trust and loyalty is difficult to earn, and there are very few who can be considered family friends. The Ackermans are protective of their own, no matter who the individual is, and this generosity extends to close friends and allies as well, which goes to show how useful their loyalty can be even if it's difficult to obtain. Still, the Ackermans are an intelligent group and they know when to get over their pride, so bargaining with the 'enemy' is never fully out of the question.

Most importantly, the Ackermans know where to draw the line between their public appearance and their secrecy. Their image is important to maintain, but there's a lot that happens behind closed doors that others aren't aware of, and there's actually much more to the family than meets the eye.

HISTORY

Karlina comes from a rich, accomplished line of pure-bloods. Her mother, Nicolette Ackerman, is an excellent witch (well-versed in the Dark Arts) and an even better pianist, whose performance on stage exceeds that of any other. Much like her daughter, she is a cold woman in appearance, but this first impression is only a fair representation of her beauty and not of her personality, which is charming and not at all distant.

Karlina's father, Elijah Ackerman, is a scholar and poet who teaches at Oxford University for work and writes verse in his spare time. Overall, he is better known in the muggle world than in the wizarding world, but his ties with Nicolette and his own accomplishments have earned him a name in both.

Her parents are people of luxury and knowledge, enjoying both the art of entertainment and other, more practical things. Elijah did all that he could to thoroughly educate his daughter and Nicolette did her part to ensure she was raised to be talented. Karlina was uninterested in all fine arts except music and poetry, which she heard on a daily basis, and grew to love the rhythms and melodies of both very dearly. They were her refuge from the world when it was too overbearing.

They may have a flawless reputation, but the Ackermans are a family of cheaters and liars. They are a family with too much to hide. A family that, despite their countless faults, has somehow managed to maintain the deceitful image of perfection. Who wouldn't want to be like them? With their fine clothing, their silver cutlery, their elaborate tapestries... whatever could be wrong with them? Nothing, everyone thought, nothing at all. On so many different occasions Karlina has been told that someone would die to be like her that she has begun to believe it herself. But then the cruel reality comes knocking at her door once more, reminding her that the truth of things is very different.

Her mother's curse was one of the many aspects haunting the family's life. But that had been two years ago, the Ackermans had moved on since then... at least some of them had.

Karlina's instance of magic happened when she was five years old. The girl had grown up hearing her mother play the piano so well that she fell in love with the instrument and the beautiful melodies it produced. One day, she snuck into the room where her mother kept her precious grand piano and sat down as if to play it. The child knew nothing about the patterns of the keys or how to work the pedals, so she simply sat and stared at the instrument. Suddenly, it began to play of its own accord, bringing to life one of the pieces her mother played so often.

Upon hearing her composition, Nicolette went to see who could possibly be playing her piano. There she found young Karlina, her hands gently resting on the piano as she sat, mesmerized by the music that somehow flowed from her fingertips. When she heard her mother enter, Karlina jumped out of the seat, cutting the melody short. She was afraid of what her mother would say, but the woman only smiled knowingly, and ever since that moment, Karlina learned and practiced the piano for an hour every day.
