PHYSICAL APPEARANCE

Michael is rather short for his age, and thin. It's not unusual to see him trip over legs he's not yet grown into. Michael's skin is light, but not ghostly pale. He has brown hair that he normally keeps short-ish, but not exactly tidy, as he/his family tend to just cut his hair at home when the fancy strikes. He has light blue/grey eyes and wears glasses to correct nearsightedness.

On average, Michael tends to dress for practicality, not fashion. His non-school-day wardrobe mostly consists of easy-to-throw-on white t-shirts and jeans, though his mother did send him some blue shirts to add following his sorting. Michael gets cold easily, and often either wears long-sleeve shirts under his robes or pulls knit sweaters over his t-shirts to stay warm.

PERSONALITY

Michael is very eager to learn about the various types of magic he can be involved with, particularly ones that are more "natural" - for example: herbology, astronomy, care of magical creatures, etc. Though shy, he does try to be nice to anyone he talks to initially, and wants friends. His eagerness to learn/find new experiences also extends beyond the classroom to activities like flying/Quidditch or to the possibility of travel after school/on breaks. His attempts at kindness are sometimes undercut by his short temper, though the fierceness may also come through in loyalty/ protectiveness.

BACKSTORY

Michael was born to two wizard parents and grew up in a small house tucked in the woods of Shaftesbury. He has a young sister he considered his best friend growing up. Their father left when they were young, and their mother had to raise the two mostly by herself (though with some assistance from friends). While Michael is not unused to seeing magic - having been raised solely around them - he was strongly discouraged from attempting anything magic-related himself prior to Hogwarts (including broom-riding or even grabbing sticks and playing pretend magic with his sister), as their home put them in extremely close proximity to muggles, and they always faced the potential of a walker straying too far from the beaten path. The strict restrictions on magic are part of why Michael is so eager to finally learn what he can now.

While he doesn't remember much of his father, Michael remembers him being adept at casual spells, and admiring his ability nearly as much as his mother's. When the two attended Hogwarts themselves, his mother was in Hufflepuff, while his father fell into Gryffindor.

Most of Michael's socialization growing up was through interactions with cousins on their occasional visits with family. His parents taught him his basic lessons—counting, reading, writing, etc.— when he was a toddler. Past that, he sought out knowledge through the books scattered about their home, watching his mother work, and a lot of questions.

First Instance of Magic: When they were both little, Michael would sometimes use magic to pull toys away from his sister to play with them himself. Initially, his parents just reacted the way muggle parents might to a child's non-magical misbehavior, getting onto him and encouraging nice attitudes towards his sibling. As he got older, his mother's restrictions on magic grew tighter, and he was discouraged from any magical activity until school, though she still told him plenty of fantastical stories of how great it would be once he did arrive at Hogwarts.
