Medical Magic
The ability to improve one’s physical condition or mental state of any living being by using various potions, ingredients, charms or spells is medical magic. Medical magic does not necessarily focus only on the physical and mental health of the patient, but also their appearance. What is Medical Magic?
There are many different roles that contribute and/or use medical magic.Occupations in Medical Magic
Healers
Stationed at hospitals such as London’s St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries are healers. They are the equivalent to muggle doctors and nurses who help the health of many patients, whether it be physical or mental. Healers specifically use healing magic when tending to their patients. To identify a Healer, they often wear bright, lime green robes with the St. Mungo’s hospital logo (wand and bone).
To qualify to become a Healer, one must have pass their Potions, Transfiguration, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Charms and Herbology N.E.W.T.s exams with a high mark such as “Outstanding” or “Exceeding Expectations.”
- The Fat Friar:
This talented Healer was able to cure the sick with just a touch of his wand. His kind and joyful personality was what cost him his life as he was executed by churchmen who believed that he was just poking people with a stick when trying to cure them of the pox.- Gunhilda de Gorsemoor:
Both a Potioneer and Healer, Gunhilda de Gorsemoor, discovered the cure for Dragon Pox, a disease that killed many wizards. She, a one-eyed and hump-backed witch, would Heal those who were infected by the deadly disease.- Hannah Abbott:
Abbott trained as a Healer later in life after marrying Neville Longbottom and becoming landlady of the Leaky Cauldron. Unlike most Healers, Abbott does not work for the hospital, but rather applied to work as Matron at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.- Miriam Strout:
Working in the Janus Thickey Ward, the ward that deals with treating permanent spell damage at St Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries, Strout handles long-term patients who either have memory loss or mental health issues that result from spell damage.- Poppy Pomfrey:
Pomfrey was a Matron at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Her expertise was that she was able to handle and cure different types of ailments with ease. Her role during the Battle of Hogwarts was to care for the wounded and attend those who died. In 2014, Pomfrey either retired or thought about retiring.- Urquhart Rackharrow:
A well-known Healer in St. Mungo’s Hospital, created not necessarily a spell or charm, but rather a curse called Entrail-Expelling Curse in the 1600s. However, this curse works well with medic magic in which it pulls out inner organs. This can seem daunting, however, it was made with the perspective of a Healer in which organs can be taken out of the body without too much surgical operations. Overall this curse can be used in a surgical fashion or for research in the medical field. For the creation of this curse, he was honored with a portrait on the walls of St. Mungo’s Hospital.
Mediwizards
While Healers are found primarily within hospital grounds, Mediwizards often take on the role of field doctors at various events. Events can include Quidditch games, tournaments and other Wizarding or magical-based events taking place in the Wizarding World. Mediwizards are the equivalent to muggle medics of EMTs. Mediwizards often use medical magic to help injured patients.
Potioneers
Potioneers take on a large contributing role in the medical field. While there are a collective many who brew new concoctions for fame, there are some who take the time to combine magical ingredients together solely with the intent to help human-kind mitigate the effects of various illnesses and more.
Spell Inventors
Another contributor to the medical field are those who create spells and charms. While there are a collective few who design spells and charms for fame, there are some who take the time to go through its dangerous (and unknown) process with the intent to help human-kind mitigate the effects of various illnesses and more.
Medicinal magic comes in the form of various magical ingredients combined or brewed together to form a potion or treatment to improve the physical or mental ailments of a living being. Medicinal magic are often used by Healers and Mediwizards and are crafted by Potioneers.Medicinal Magic

A Cosmetologist, Sacharissa Tugwood used her potion-making skills into beautifying the world through many self-invented Beautification Potions. She was also skilled in Herbology and discovered the medical use of the Bubotuber plant in which she created the well-known ingredient in curing pimples, the Bubotuber Pus. An ingredient that is used by many Mediwizards and Healers to help improve the physical qualities of another.

There are two hand movements the castor can make when chanting this spell: trace their wand over the wounds, or poke their wand onto the wound. The Vulnera Sanentur is also classified as a counter-curse to the spell, Sectumsempra.
Both muggle and magical societies have struggled through many pandemic and epidemics throughout the ages. The wizarding world, often in secret from muggles, strives to find solutions to all illnesses in the world through an exploration of spells, charms, potions and various ingredients made possible by Healers, Potioneers and Spell Inventors. Periodically, the magical society will help muggles with their pandemics or epidemics if they are discreet enough to share them.History of Medical Magic
Examples of Historical Pandemics and Epidemics in the Wizarding SocietyExamples of Historical Pandemics and Epidemics in the Muggle Society
- Dragon Pox:
This lethal disease began in the early 12th-century affected only the wizarding society of witches and wizards. Dragon Pox, similar to muggle’s chicken pox, warped the victim’s skin into a green-tinge with pockmarks. In some cases, victims would have green and purple rashes between their toes and sparks flying from their noses when sneezing. Originating from South America, this deadly pandemic came from Peruvian Vipertooth dragons. Many witches and wizards perished in this pandemic, Abraxas Malfoy, Fleamont and Euphemia Potter, and Eldritch Diggory, to name a few. Nearly 500 years later, Gunhilda of Gorsemoor, a Healer, worked exceptionally hard to find a cure for the Dragon Pox. Her potion, Dragon Pox Cure, was a success and earned her fame for saving the wizarding world. Although Dragon Pox has a cure, it still reappears throughout the centuries, attacking primarily elderly folks who are much more susceptible to the disease.- Rat Plague:
Beginning in 1992, the Rat Plague began in the dark alleyways of Knockturn Alley in London. Rats of dark or sickly green-tinted fur, are a species of rat, originating from Scotland, that roamed the area and began the viral spread of disease. Using spells to cast away the rats, it was learned that they were resistant to the Fire-Making Spell, the Freezing Spell and the Severing Charm. Only the Red Sparks charm was what weakened them.
- The Black Death:
Originating from fleas that lived on black infested rats from Asia, this mass breakout began in the early 14th-century throughout European countries. Its spread peaked by the time it was in the mid-14th century in which many muggles perished. It is recorded that approximately 30 to 60 percent of the European population of muggles died by The Black Death. Muggles struggle to find a cure for this beastly plague, however, it took nearly a couple centuries to regain their original population. The wizarding society kept to themselves during this pandemic.- COVID-19 (Coronavirus):
This infectious disease lifted off in December of 2019, beginning in Wuhan, China. COVID-19, a virus that originates from mammals or birds, came from local Chinese bats in China’s Hubei province. Due to advanced technology and transportation, COVID-19 is spreading throughout the whole world, affecting the entire muggle population. Muggles are working hard in stopping this viral attack by quarantining themselves into their homes, frequently washing their hands and social distancing from one another. Unlike The Black Plague, the wizarding society have taken it upon themselves to become involved in solving the issue of this pandemic as it has an effect on their communities. Potioneers, working diligently, have found a cure for the Coronavirus Pandemic in which they strengthened the strain of Pepperup Potion, the common cold cure. This newly brewed potion is called the Grand Pepperup Potion. It is said to relieve the common symptoms of COVID-19 such as fever, dry cough, shortness of breath and fatigue. Only time will tell if their involvement in the muggle society will work.
As years progress, the Ministry of Magic expands their departments to be more inclusive of all professionals under one roof. One expansion was their Department of Medicine where many Healers come together, or a Board of Healers, to regulate medicinal use that are to be used in hospitals and what students are to learn through curriculum in their later years of schooling.Ministry of Magic: Medical Branch
Board of Healers
The Board of Healers are made up donors and Healers. The board regulates student curriculum, what is appropriate medicinal use in hospitals, as well as oversees all magical hospital branches in its area. In order for potions and spells to be approved by the Board of Healers, it must go through a series of tests. While highly unpopular, there are many researchers who test new potions and spells on creatures. However, there are also willing witches and wizards who would go through tests for compensation.
There are multiple Board of Healers throughout the world, and they come together once a year to weigh in on matters relating to medical magic. As of 2020, Board of Healers from the UK, North and South America, Africa, and Asia have come together to discuss the medicinal use of the "Grand Pepperup Potion" due to COVID-19. While it is law that the muggle and magical societies are to remain separate, even in catastrophes, this was one that also affected the Wizarding World. In turn, the International Board of Healers gave the approval to secretly share their advanced common cold potion with the muggle society to lessen the plague.
While it is highly recommended to keep the magical community unknown to the muggle communities, there are some forms of communication and outreach when illnesses can affect both worlds. Whenever there is an epidemic, pandemic or other types of outbreaks within the world, there may be some teamwork between societies. However, if it does not affect the wizarding society, then it is more than likely that the cure to such pandemics would be left for the muggles to figure out. There are times, however, that occuptions such as Mediwizards, Healers and Potioneers work together to come up with a cure using magical ingredients and, depending on the strain of illness, will not only ensure that the wizarding world has access to it, but a very limited access for the muggle world as well. Can Medical Magic be used in Muggle Society?

Medical Magic
Magical Maladies
Ectoplasmic Lock
Description: Often happens when a wizard is cleaning an abandoned place full of ghost ectoplasm without proper preparation, especially when they have an open wound. An old ectoplasm is a great place for a species of magical micro bugs to live. This kind of magical micro bug would stay around an open wound. They release toxins through the bloodstream that affect the nervous system that causing nonstop muscle contraction. The toxin also makes the infected person cause instances of accidental magic.
Severity Staging:Treatment: Preventive measure for this disease is to always wear protection before cleaning a place full of ectoplasm. Once they have contact with the unknown-age ectoplasm, they should wash their affected area carefully and check if there are any open wounds. It's recommended to find a medical magic professional. They would plan to take preventive measures by cleaning the wound and/or administering some potions to eradicate the micro bugs and neutralise the toxin. In moderate-severe cases, they would give supportive treatment for breathing and nutritional intake problems. There's a practice of doing bloodletting and using Blood Replenishing Potions to clean the toxins and the micro bugs. However, it's still under debate and research due to the side effects and complications of this practice.
- Mild: Often appears 7 days after exposure, the infected person experiences general spasticity, which makes them find it hard to move and feel their movement are uneven and effortful. They also experience many instances of accidental magic as if they're unable to control them.
- Moderate: It appears 10 days after exposure, the infected person can't move their body. The instances of accidental magic appear more often.
- Severe: It appears 14 days after exposure. The infected person starts to have a hard time swallowing. Their breath also quickens. At this stage, instances of accidental magic don't appear anymore. If the treatment is late, a big accidental magic would happen before the infected person falls into mortality.
Dragon Pox
Description: Dragon Pox is a very contagious disease. People who work with dragons have the high risk of getting it if they don't do the health protocol of handling a dragon*. People who have this disease might show these symptoms: high fever, greenish skin, green-and-purple rash between the toes, and spark sneezing. When the infected reach the convalescent state, their skin might still be green for a long time, around three to six months depending on the severity of the illness. This disease could be lethal when the treatment is not adequate.
Severity Staging:Treatment: Pepperup potions could relieve the symptoms of mild and moderate Dragon Pox, while Grand Pepperup Potions is needed to treat the severe stage. The definitive treatment of disease is The Dragon Pox Cure that will be provided in the hospital. Under adequate treatment, the disease would last for one month.
- Mild: Fever, runny nose, Malaise, Green-and-purple rash between the toes.
- Moderate: High Fever, Dehydration, Greenish skin, spark sneezing.
- Severe: High Fever, Dehydration, Dark green skin, Scaly skin, shortness of breath, Nosebleed.
Green Thumb
Description: Green thumb is a condition that especially appears to wizards who have an affinity to vegetation. Wizards who have this condition show symptoms of greenish thumb. If left untreated, sometimes small leaves grow from the nail. The mechanism of this disease arises from the magic element of magical vegetations to enter the bloodstream through the wound.
Treatment: The preventive measure for this condition is to wear protective gloves whenever handling magical vegetation, since the wound is the immediate point of entry of the magical element. This condition doesn't harm the host, it only changes the cosmetic appearance. When getting this condition, the hosts should take a break from handling magical vegetation until their own immune system neutralises the effect. It could take 5 to 14 days, depending on the severity.Hag Slug Infestation
Symptoms of Hag Slug infestation, taken from medical records of study subject Colin McCoire, as well as anecdotal evidence from the cases of Erin Ryan, Kim Sato, and as well Xailah Alptraum-Leveret (not infected).
Synopsis: Magical slugs, known as "hag slugs" are the means by which Hags reproduce in the magical world. Colin's case is well known to the staff of the Magical Maladies ward at St Mungo's. He is known to have personally infected no fewer than two dozen girls in the region of Ottery St. Catchpole and a further three dozen in the Northern Highlands region around his home at Altnaharra. All the infected girls have been treated per usual protocol of rounds of slugulus eructo until clear of hag slugs. It remains somewhat unclear how exactly this particular boy became infected, but it is clear that Kim Sato was also infected along with several others. The activity of a coven of hags in the vicinity of Hogsmeade is highly suspected over the last five years.
Erin's case was markedly different, on account of her being a girl, though is not as well known to medical researchers. Symptom impressions are thus taken primarily from the case of Colin McCoire, with additions from Erin Ryan's case.
Appearance: Hag slugs look something like ordinary garden slugs. As they mature inside a person's body, however, they grow quite large and are slimy and black in appearance. Outside the body, a hag slug is able to slither about faster and more agile than folk think a slug should. Hag slug skin is quite tough, almost leathery, and when stabbed, it oozes a hot liquid. Hag slugs do have teeth.
Primary symptoms include: the nearly irresistible urge to snog other people and the often overwhelming and intrusive thoughts of wanting to snog. Once infected with hagslugs, a boy can scarcely think of anything other than to kiss and snog other people --- girls or boys. For it is through kissing that hag slugs are transmitted from host to recipient. Boys can be infected, but can only carry the slugs as hosts. Girls can be infected, and if not treated will eventually succumb to the slugs and become hags themselves.
It seems clear that the slugs in some way influence the mental state of the infected boy, possibly mediated by ordinary neurotransmitters and hormones, turning him into a kissing machine. The infected boy will seek to satisfy the urge to snog by joining or starting games such as "spin the bottle" or "truth and dare"; by seeking out multiple dates at Honeydukes; and even by the simple expedient of sending notes to multiple fellow students asking them if they'd to snog.
Mentally, the infected boy experiences a heightened sense of euphoria and a near constant adrenaline rush that only pushes him to try again and find ever more snogging partners. He doesn't realise that the origin of his desire to kiss does not in fact arise from his own self, but is rather the means the hag slug uses to infect a girl and thus accomplish its own life and reproductive cycle.
The infected girl, on the other hand, becomes progressively more consumed by the slugs. She may experience what seem to be hallucinations, but are more likely to be the thoughts or projections of whatever darkness the slugs are actually composed of. To those who know her, and are aware of the signs, may notice a growing madness and paranoia. Eventually, her mind will be filled with the voices of the slugs.
Secondary symptoms include: a cloudy memory of certain aspects of the infection. For example, the infected boy, after undergoing treatment, may clearly remember all the snogging, but may forget who exactly he had been snogging with. He may also forget portions of conversations or important things about other people. Of note in the advanced infestation is a progressive degradation of the mind and a growing sense of paranoia.
Hag slug infection can also amplify other conditions. Of note in the case of Kim Sato, his underlying depression coupled with the machinations of the slugs, resulted in a sort of brain fog, leaving the victim often unsure where he was or what he was doing. His daily life became a jumbled and mixed up assortment of emotions and experience. In contrast, Colin's concurrent addiction to both darkest night potion and alcohol of dubious quality resulted in a similar brain fog, but of a more hyperactive sort. His brother Liam had, on several occasions, to track Colin down only to find him swimming in the lake late at night or flying on his broom in a naked stupor.
Physical manifestations: Former Hogwarts student Xailah Alptraum exhibits a star-burst mark on her left shoulder from a Hag-Slug bite. Such bites seem not to be particularly harmful, though as stated here, do leave a small scar.
The literature describes other physical manifestations of hag slug infestation as well. Though not noted in the present cases, some infected children have been noted to be particularly thin and pale. This is thought to be a result of the parasitic nature of the slugs as they sap energy and oxygen from the child's own system to sustain themselves.
A number of infected persons have also been noted to suffer from particular cravings. Foods high in iron, such as meat and even blood are notable in this regard. In the more advanced staged of infection, females often bite chunks out of their victims. It is unclear if this particular craving is due to some nutritional deficit or is a working of the slugs themselves as they devour their victims' minds.
Treatment: Prevention is best, including recommended screening of children. If an infestation is discovered, the age old adage better out than in must suffice! Once an infestation of hag slugs is suspected and confirmed, the best remedy is a bucket and course of slugulus eructo until no slugs remain in the host's system. This treatment must be dibe under the care of medical magic professionals in order to assess if the host still has the slugs and to prevent side effects such as dehydration, abdominal pain, and aspiration.
More advanced infestations might call for a stronger course of treatment. One rather interesting hag slug incident that occurred at Hogwarts some years ago, involved the use of slug repellent in conjunction with a variety of physical restraint spells as well as the afore mentioned spell. The repellent should not be fed to the infected victim, but rather spread in a circle around the victim in order to contain any slugs vomited. The real trick is containing the girl within the circle of slug repellent! A severely infected girl will do nearly anything to escape with her slugs safely inside her!
Early treatment is best. An infected girl who remains untreated will, upon her sixteenth birthday, turn into a hag. While only girls are turned into hags, infected boys remain far more dangerous as they continue to be a threat to the female population as slug carriers.
Infected girls really only become a danger when they themselves become hags. Hags, after all, are known for attacking and devouring children.
Notes: Since this most recent breakout of hag slug infestation, Ministry of Magic have taken stronger steps to control the birth of new hags by preventing their forming in the first place. All children under 16 years of age are thus screened by the medical magic professionals annually to detect if they have acquired the infestation. If detected, such children are treated as described as soon as possible.
OOC Note: Since we do not have the option for Hag as a special race at this time, every female student shall be presumed to be cured of hag slug infestation before her 16th birthday. This happens in the background.Magical Exhaustion
Description: Magical exhaustion happens when wizards misregulate and overuse their magical energy, resulting in physical exhaustion and inability to cast spells properly. It is common among overworked wizards or those who push their magical capacity beyond its limit. The physical symptoms often show in the order: profuse sweating, trembling hands, lightheadedness, and then fall into general weakness. The magical symptoms usually happen after the caster experiences trembling hands. They start to miss their target, getting spells fireback, until they can't cast the spell due to magical energy depletion.
Treatment: It is recommended for the wizards who experience the symptoms to immediately stop casting spells and rest. In the severe case, the affected wizards would be bedridden and prohibited from casting any spells for at least 24 hours until they regain their stamina. Healers would administer some potions, such as Sleeping Draught and Invigoration Draught, to support the recovery.Mumblemumps
Description: Mumblemumps is a contagious magical disease which is more common in children less than 18 years old. Healers studied that the reason behind this was the underdeveloped immune system and magical power. It is spread through the air-borne. The affected person might show symptoms such as swelling in the face and neck, low-grade fever, headache, and mumbling, especially at night.
Treatment: Pepperup potions could relieve the symptoms of Mumblemumps. There is no definitive treatment found yet. With adequate rest, hydration, and nutrition, the affected person will have improvement in five to seven days. There is a preventative measure that is enforced by the Ministry of Magic which is regular vaccination for children under 18 years old.Scrofungulus
Description: Scrofungulus is a chronic magical disease caused by a pathogenic magical fungus. The fungus thrives in dark, damp environments with high concentrations of magical energy, such as the safes or vaults where powerful magical artifacts are stored. Visually, it appears as a blackish-green mold, often mistaken for ordinary mildew until further magical inspection is conducted.
Transmission occurs through inhalation of fungal spores, which then settle in the airways of the host. Over time, the fungus spreads, often affecting the lymphatic system.
The first symptoms that appear are low-grade intermittent fever which is followed by body weight loss. This disease is usually hard to differentiate from other diseases in the early stage. But in the late stage, the special characteristic appears as a tentacle-like bump on the face and neck. This tentacle could obstruct the airway and become fatal, leading to death.
Treatment: It needs long-term treatment to eradicate the cause of the disease. The healers would give the patients antifungal potions that must be taken regularly for six months. Failing to do the treatment properly could lead to prolonged treatment.
It is recommended to always regularly clean the safe of magical artefacts and make sure that the place isn't damp.Spattergroit
Description: Spattergroit is a highly contagious airborne magical disease caused by the inhalation of spores from a microscopic magical fungus. It spreads rapidly, especially in crowded or poorly ventilated magical environments, making early detection and containment critical.
The person who caught this disease would show symptoms of high-grade fever, purple pustules formation the face, and fatigue. Spattergroit is fast-progressing, and vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and those with weakened magical cores, are especially at risk for complications. The severe cases of this disease could lead to the inability to talk when the disease infects the uvula, memory loss when it reaches the brain, and the blisters can cause scarring.
Treatment: There is a famous traditional treatment for this disease, which requires the binding of a toad's liver around the victim's throat. Then they should stand naked by the full moon in a barrel of eels' eyes. However, this is not a proven treatment. It is highly suggested to bring the affected person to the hospital as soon as possible, as this case needs to be isolated. They would be given symptomatic treatment like Grand Pepperup Potions to quickly reduce the fever, as well as antifungal treatment to eradicate the cause of the disease.
The people who treat the affected person should wear protective gear like a face mask or Bubblehead Charm since the disease is airborne.Vanishing Sickness
Description: Vanishing Sickness is a rare but chronic magical infectious disease transmitted through the bite of a magical fly, a creature found exclusively in environments with concentrated magical energy. These flies thrive in unclean, poorly maintained magical spaces, but the true source of the illness lies in a magical parasite they carry.
Once bitten, the parasite enters the bloodstream and targets the host’s magical core, slowly destabilising their magical essence. If left untreated, the condition causes the body to gradually lose its visibility, resulting in partial or complete transparency. In advanced stages, this can become permanent or fatal.
The symptoms appear based on the staging of the disease.
- Mild to Moderate: High Fever for 7 days, dizziness, muscle pain, fatigue, and magical flickering in some body parts, starting from the bitten one. The body parts tends to go invisible in milliseconds.
- Severe: Mild Fever, dizziness, decrease of consciousness, loss of memory, and vanishing episodes of body parts. The vanishing episode could be longer and affect more body parts if treatment isn't adequate.
Treatment: The affected person should be immediately hospitalized for appropriate treatment. The definitive treatment is anti-parasite drug that could only be given from the healers. The patient is also given supportive therapy like fluids and pain relieve. The use of Exstimulo Potion is proven to be effective to support the immune system and the magic needs. The use of Grand Pepperup Potion also improves the patient's condition.
The prevention and treatment of this disease is to make sure the environment is clean. It is recommended to clean the living space at least once every three days.
