The Fire Within
Gryffindor was known for many things. It was known for never winning anything. It was also known for being the house which once took in the Boy who Lived, Harry Potter. It was known as a house of heroes. Now, it had become the butt of many tasteless hallway jokes. All in all, it seemed that Gryffindor had fallen from its grace.
But if there was one thing that gave Jackson pride toward his house, it was its Housemaster.
Professor Pendrast had captured his fascination the day he had set foot in Hogwarts. Her dark, mysterious eyes seemed to contain a labyrinth of experience constructed on the mossy grounds of age. Whenever he looked at her, he felt as though he could get lost navigating the tales of her eyes for the rest of eternity.
And the subject she taught was just as interesting as she. Defense Against the Dark Arts. As if it could have been given a more striking name. Unlike many of the other lessons, Jackson felt the same severity in her classes that he had sensed on the day he had entered the school. He felt the stakes of his work rising with each brush of the quill, a promise that some day, what he learned would save his life or the life of someone close to him. Unlike many, he longed for this weight to be upon his shoulders, to feel a purpose and direction in his actions. Without it, he felt light and empty. As such, DaDa became his favourite class of all.
Being a muggle-born wizard with little experience, he struggled with almost anything that involved magic. While many of the pure bloods seemed to have a natural affinity for practical spellcasting, Jackson always felt like he was fumbling around underwater while trying to find his ‘spark’. At times, he questioned if he was really even a wizard.
He had always wondered what this implication meant for his future. When he was younger, he had always aspired to become a lawyer when he grew up. He wouldn’t just be a lawyer. He would be a good lawyer. One of the best. And with his power, he would protect people. He would use his power and gift to do good for others. But now, with the reality of his universe turned upside down, he had no idea what he was supposed to do with his life.
