Griffin Barrow | First Year | Slytherin
Full Name: Giffard "Griffin" Heredía Barrow
House: Slytherin
Age: 11
Date of Birth: May 1st, 2009
Nationality: Scottish by birth, naturalized as Brazilian
Wand: 30,9 cm mayhaw wood and dragon heartstring
Dominant hand: Right
School year: First year
Gender: male
Blood Status: Half-blood
Species: Human
Favorite quote: The poem written on the frame of a pear painting that acted as a door to his mother's secret greenhouse:
"a pêra pintada a falsa
pêra
por ser mentira
(por ser
cultura e não natura)
desta sorte
nos alivia
da perda e do podre
da morte"
Translation: the painted pear, the false pear, because it is a lie (because it is culture and not nature) of this sort, relieves us from death’s misery and rot
Appearance: Griffin is tall for his age (5'4) and has dark, small almond eyes. His complexion is tan, his hair is brown and slightly curly, and he has a pronounced, straight nose that looks exactly like his mother's.
Personality: Griffin is quiet, observant, and a bit aloof. At first, he's not afraid of speaking his mind, but he's slowly developing anxiety because of how he perceives people's reactions to his abrasive quips. However, he's quite indecisive - for instance, he disliked Brazil's hot weather, but now that he lives in Scotland, he misses the warmth. He's prone to internalizing his frustrations until they surface, sometimes in a theatrical fashion. Griffin doesn't care the slightest about blood purity. Growing up in a miscegenated country made him realize how backward and boring this whole notion is.
Background: Giffard is the son of a Romani witch, Elena, and an Anglican minister. He has no relationship with his father but is very close to his mom, who was born in Málaga, Spain, and went to Beauxbatons. Elena's childhood was extraordinary, considering the itinerary nature of her family; indeed, she was the first to pursue a formal education in one of the great wizarding schools, and because of that is considered sort of a black sheep by her relatives. She kept some aspects of her nomad upbringing as she grew up, and didn't feel the need to settle down anywhere, promptly accepting the job offer that led her to relocate to the United Kingdom, and later, to Brazil. Giffard has no recollection of a quiet household; in fact, he remembered quite vividly growing up amidst strange noises and weird smells, the result of his mom's experimentation with herbology. He also remembers the sun's scorching heat, the sweat drops forming on his forehead while he dried under the glass of his mom's portable greenhouse. He received his nickname, Griffin, because he was fascinated with the magical beasts during his early childhood. One day, he witnessed a huge shadow soaring over the ceiling and immediately called his mom, insisting that it was a griffin. Elena was amused by the possibility of such an animal existing so far away from Greece and laughed it off as being an overgrown tuiuiú, a Brazilian bird.
Time at Hogwarts: Because his mother had gone to Beauxbatons, Griffin knew very little about Hogwarts. He had heard some of Slytherin's dark history on the train, which had left him scared and definitely curious. He thought he had traits of every house except Gryffindor: he was a diligent worker, but he was also book smart, resourceful, and cunning. Nevertheless, he had a gut feeling that the “cunning” part of his personality was greater than the others. When the Sorting Hat shouted "Slytherin!", Griff was not surprised, but he couldn't stop the butterflies from forming in his stomach.
Griff has never had to deal with other wizards before, except his mother's co-workers (including her new girlfriend), and his grandmother. He was eager to find out what was so great about Hogwarts, and why his mother had insisted on putting him at this school instead of Beauxbatons.
