"The Great Lake, alternatively known as the Black Lake is a large body of water, freshwater, and landlocked, located to the south of Hogwarts Castle. It is about half a mile in diameter and the castle's plumbing network drains into it. Every school year at Hogwarts, after the Hogwarts Express arrives at Hogsmeade station, Rubeus Hagrid (or a substitute) calls the first-year students to follow him to the lakeshore and the Hogwarts boats. Whereupon Hagrid occupies one boat and each other boat carries up to four students. The boats then self-propels across the lake to a dock under Hogwarts Castle as per tradition.
Upon reaching the castle, and the first years disembark and climb the stairs to the lawn, entering the castle through the front doors. First years then waited until summoned into the Great Hall to get Sorted into their houses. At the end of their first year, students take the boats back to Hogsmeade Station, while most older students ride down the lane in carriages.
At the end of every school year, graduating seventh years leave the school by sailing back across the lake." Michael read as he sat by the Lake. He was reading Hogwarts: A history, again, he was determined to know everything in it by memory.
Looking out over the lake, he smiled thinking of the hundreds of things, people, living under there. Even though he could see the lake and everything from his dorm and the common room, nothing compared to being near it. Every now and then he swore he say the water bubble and a flick as if the Squid was close.
He wondered what it'd be like to swim with them, the squid, and all the other underwater citizens. He knew he could get something to do it with, or he could learn a spell to make it possible. 'hmm maybe next year I can.' He went back to his book, still deep in thought as he read.
He was so absorbed into his book, he didn't notice when someone sat by him until they spoke, making him jump and yelp before he turned, glaring at them for scaring him and disturbing his peace. "Could you not have said something or made a noise?" he asked, trying to regain his composure, but failing as a splash sounded behind him.

Alina often liked to go to the Great Lake to think. There was something about those open waters that somehow seemed to read her. At times it was dark and vast and other times it seemed welcoming, with sparkling waters and blue skies. It helped her think being out there in the fresh air and away from the hustle and bustle of the Courtyard.
Upon heading there, she caught sight of a boy reading by the lake's edge. Not recognizing him, her curiosity was sparked and she approached him, leaning down to take a look at the book. "A bit of light reading, eh?" she asked, her eyes skimming over a few words to see that he was reading about this very same lake.
The boy, not realizing that she was right there or even had approached, jumped after being startled and then presented her with a glare which she wasn't expecting. She had just been trying to be nice. "I'm sorry," she quickly stated after he snapped at her. "I was just trying to be....friendly," and she glanced over her shoulder to see a bit of the Giant Squid's tentacles lifting up, almost as if waving hello.
"Hi, Herman," she said with a soft smile, her eyes still out to the waters.

At the girl's shocked expression he realized how mean he was being. "Sorry you just scared me" he said, he looked down, and then moved his book to his bad again. He turned looking at the lake again and seeing the lake ripple. That squid, Michael thought. The girl said hi to him, and a name. "He has a name?"
Michael nearly broke his book getting it out again and scanning it, the lake section, for the name. "It doesn't have a name in here." He said softly before looking at her. "How did you know that?" He asked, generally curious. He moved all his self so she could sit by him, comfortable and clean.
He had so many things he wanted to ask now. Who does the kitchens? Who was the red haired guy in the portrait on the seventh floor? Why are the slytherins viewed so bad if Merlins from it? He couldn't even count how many questions he had.
"How much do you know about Hogwarts?" He asked, his wonder in his voice. He wouldn't how childish he looked asking her these questions but figured it didnt matter, as long as he got the answers to his questions.

She thought about his first question for a moment and it wasn't a super easy one to answer. Everything SHOULD have a name but in officially having a name, did one have to know that was their name? Did others have to know it was their name?
Alina then noticed that he wasn't so tense now and she smiled, coming to sit down beside him on the lake's edge. "Well...Herman is MY name for him, anyway. Not official. It's like in the castle, I've got my portrait cat, Artemindora and her kittens, and there's another portrait named Poppy." She liked to give names to things because it made her feel like she had a more personal connection with them.
"I've been a tour guide before," she said proudly. "I could always fulfill that role again if you'd like!" But she hadn't even so much as introduced herself. "I'm Alina. Alina Rosier. Second Year. Hufflepuff. I wouldn't say I am an expert about the castle because I don't think anyone really can be, by design." The castle changed, morphed, transformed. "I've been working on a map though ever since First Year," and she opened up her bag and began to shuffle a few things around until she pulled out a rather large piece of parchment and began to unroll it to show him her progress. It was quite impressive.
Truth was, she would be a good one to ask some of the things about the castle. She liked to explore and she already had been in the kitchens, discovered some of her favorite places, and even found a secret passage!

Michael listend to her intently. Every answer to everyone of his questions getting taken in. He was entranced by her knowledge and was shocked on the fact she seem to be creatively smart.
When the girl took out her map, modesty talking about it, he was even more shocked. "This is. . This is amazing, how did you do all of this in a year?" He asked as he grabbed and studied over the map, he couldn't get all of it now, as it seemed to be a confused maze. But from what he could get he memorized.
'So this is there, and the kitchens are their. Oh! Thats there? Wow' he thought in rambles, every now and then saying some of them. He was so entranced in thr map that he wasn't even focusing on the girl that made the map.
He turned the map in different ways, before frowning, "What about Slytherin dorms, you have RavenClaw, Hufflepuff, even Gryffindor, why isn't Slytherin drawn?" He asked. Maybe she just happened been there? Or she could just be waiting to draw it. He hummed, "Well it's over here, after Potions, through a small hallway" he said, pointing on the map.

She smiled, glad of his input on her map. "I avoided anything Slytherin last year," she said with a slight laugh. "You see, the Rosiers have been at Hogwarts for generations and every Rosier has been sorted into Slytherin...until me. I didn't think of it so much as a tradition but rather an expectation. Even my identical twin sister Bella was sorted into Slytherin." She gathered that this boy must be one to input where the Slytherin Common Room was and she paused, going back through her bag.
She pulled out a normal pencil and made a mark where he had indicated. New year, possibly new friend, new ventures into her map. Time to put Slytherin on there. She drew a short little corridor as he had said and then began to map out that area. "She transferred to Beauxbatons though so she's not in your house anymore."
"Anyway so I thought my father would be furious in learning I was put in Hufflepuff so I just avoided the topic entirely, danced around it in letters when I needed to. It wasn't until the Summer that he discovered what house I had been placed into. Turns out, he was initially going to be in Hufflepuff too but the Sorting Hat changed its mind. He always felt out of place in school and wondered if it was because of the wrong house."
"How's that?" she then asked, taking a moment to look over the dimensions she had drawn the Common Room. "And do the dormitories go off like this?" she asked, sort of sketching in how she imagined based on what she knew of her dorms in Hufflepuff and the Gryffindor ones she had spoke to with a friend.

He listened to her intently as she taken about her family and how they were all slytherin. He thought about it and couldn't think if he had ever talked to his parents about their houses, but his grandparents were both Hufflepuffs, at least his moms were, he never met his dad's parents.
As she started talking about her father and his hat stall, Michael smiled. He didn't have a hat-stall, he was immediately placed in his house. He felt relieved and good for the girl, happy her father was okay with her house.
As she looked back at the map, asking about the dorms he finally commented. "Actually they go like this, instead of the girls being beside the boys staircase the stair cases are like this, so the boys can go up them but only half way before they turn." He said as he describe the stairs and everything showing her, "Because the first year boys and girls are by each other but the staircase splits in two for the rooms." He concluded. "Any other questions? I don't know much beside about the slytherin and potions." He said, kinda sad that he couldn't be more helpful to her and her map making.

She made the changes on her map as he spoke, careful to take in the details so she’d get it right. Do you like Potions? Potions and Herbology are probably my two favorite classes. I think I want to become a healer or a nurse after Hogwarts.” She wanted to help people, that was for sure.Interacting with @Michael Miller
Alina rolled up her map so she could skip it back into her bag and then popped another lemon drop, her all time favorite Candy, into her mouth before holding the bag out to him in case he wanted to take one. Her attention was on him now.
Already having asked about which class he seemed to favor so far, she quickly backtracked to some of the basics. “So what is your name, Sly,” she said short for slytherin, “and where are you from? Wizard born? What’s your family like?”
Lots of questions for the poor boy but Alina liked knowing everything she possibly could about a person. She liked getting to know them on a deeper level. There weren’t too many that she had a close bond with and who knew, maybe this boy could be one.
Sometimes though all that rapid questioning could scare someone odd but that isn’t at all what she wanted. She hoped she hadnt come off too strong.

As the girl made the changes on her map being careful to get it right. She asked about potions, "Oh umm, I like potions but I'm more attracted to creatures and Nature so Care of Magical Creatures and Herbology are more my style" He replied.
The girl rolled up her map and slipped back into her bag. As she looked back at him, she popped a lemon drop into her mouth before holding the bag out to him in case he wanted to take one. He smiled and shook his head, Lemon drops weren't very good in his opinion.
As she took in his answer, she started to ask more personal questions. "Oh, umm my name is Michael Miller. I'm a pureblood. I'm from Edinburgh, Scotland, my mom wanted to raise me where I could be close to her family. " He ignored her last question, as he didn't know how to answer it.
He smiled shyly after, "Umm, I have 6 siblings, Lily who's 11, Khloe who's 9, Nicole is 8, Michelle is 6, Max is 4, Brianna is 3, and Macy is 1. " He took a breath and smiled, "All sisters, and all crazy and loud" He looked down, "Do you have any siblings?"

She laughed, "that IS a lot of sisters," she said but it sounded like it could be great fun at the same time. Still, she wished that Michael had a brother just because it seemed like that would be best because then he wasn't the odd man out, no pun intended.
"I've just got one sister, Bella. She's a twin. Identical," she added that in because people always asked it after she said she had a twin. "She was in Slytherin like you last year but she decided to transfer to Beauxbatons for this year and the rest of her schooling. Feels more at home there, I guess. I'm happy she's happy," she was honest but it did also feel a little weird to be separated after twelve years being so close with someone.
"Have you gotten homesick?" Alina found that a lot of the students that were close with their families experienced homesickness in coming to Hogwarts. For her, it was a great adventure and she went exploring in the castle and on the grounds as often as she could. She had yet to feel homesick but then again, she had a house to go back to but not really much of a home. Not in the sense that some of the others had.
