It was Saturday. Most students were sleeping in, the foggy morning not really offering anything to get up for. When Phineas had turned for the seventh time and still did not fall back asleep, he let out a resigned huff and sat up. He put on his fur-lined slippers and got up, fishing his shower utensils from his trunk. After he had taken a shower and gotten dressed, he made his way to the Great Hall, enjoyed a cup of tea and some scones with jam and then left for the library.

He still had a History of Magic essay to finish and after that, he wanted to read up on offensive spells. He wasn’t a that much of a reader, but since the weather wasn’t really inviting to do outdoor activities and most of his class mates were still asleep, Phineas decided, he could as well spend some time reading up on something which he was at least mildly interested in.
When he had found himself a nice table in the back of the library, he took all his books and utensils out of his schoolbag and started working on his essay with an unusual diligence.

Not half an hour and three rolls of parchment later, he finished his essay with a proud smile. Then he stood up and went to the library section with books about duelling, jinxes and curses. Soon he found what he was looking for: an ancient tome about harmless but rather funny jinxes that affected the face. It was not very high up, but since Phineas was rather short for his age, he couldn't reach it. He jumped up and tried to grab the book, but then he heard someone approaching and quickly stopped jumping. Merlin forbid someone caught him jumping up and down like a seal in a circus.

This Saturday was strange. Usually, Amanda would be fast asleep, taking advantage of the weekend. This morning, an owl flying into the window right next to her bed, and slamming into the glass with a bonk! It had woken her up, and left her so startled she couldn't go back to sleep. She decided she would get a head start on her work, and decided to just get up and get dressed. She brushed out her hair, and put on some random clothes. She weaved her normal braid into her hair, and decided that's all she would do for this morning.

Amanda decided to skip going to the Great Hall for breakfast, though what was inside smelled heavenly. She thought that eating some amazing food would be her prize for getting some work done. She walked down to the library, figuring this would be the quietest place for her to study. She was right, for the most part. She found herself a table, and set her things down. She was about to sit down and get to work, before she heard the sound of feet, clacking on the floor. This confused her, who would be jumping up and down in the middle of the library?

Amanda got up from her seat, deciding to go investigate. She thought she was alone in the library, not seeing anyone else around except the librarian. She slowly walked towards the rows and rows of books, towards where she heard the sound coming from. She rounded a corner to see a boy standing there, just looking at her. She yelped in surprise, putting her hand over her beating heart.
"O-oh wow.." She stuttered. "I-I didn't expect anyone to be standing there.." She took a shaky breath, laughing at her own actions a bit.

Phineas watched as someone rounded the corner of the book-stand and came to a halt abruptly. The young girl let out a small yelp and clutched her heart, indicating that he gave her quite the fright. «I-I didn't expect anyone to be standing there..», she stuttered. However, she seemed to recover quickly, laughing a little at her own antics. «I'm sorry», Phineas started off, «I didn't mean to frighten you». He took a few steps towards her, contemplating whether or not she had heard his jumping from before and if he should try to give an explanation.
He decided against, instead stretching out his right hand towards her, like his mother had taught him to. «I am Phineas, by the way», he said and gave the girl a polite smile. He couldn't quite make out which house she belonged to just by her clothes, but since he was quite sure she was in the same class as him, he thought her being a Gryffindor was a safe bet.
He had not yet talked to many of his class mates apart from those who he shared a dorm with, so starting a conversation with a fellow first year Gryffindor could never hurt, right?

Catching her breath a bit, Amanda sighed in relief as the boy took a few steps towards her and introduced himself. He also put his hand out to her and smiled, which compelled her to smile back.
"Don't apologize, I kinda just scared myself." She said softly, with a smile. Her cheeks flushed pink at the embarrassment, she probably looked like a fool. She took his hand and shook it gently. "I'm Amanda, it's nice to meet you." He looked about the same age as her, she thought. He must be a first year as well. For some reason, she felt like she recognized him. Maybe from the Gryffindor table or the common room? She couldn't put her finger on it, but she knew he was also a Gryffindor, nonetheless. So far, she hadn't made any friends. Running into another first year was just a stroke of luck!
Making friends was big for her. She had struggled with it in the past, at different schools and with different people. It worried her, especially now that she was going to school with wizards instead of muggles.
"What were you doing back here, anyway? It sounded like you were jumping rope or something." She giggled, teasing him.

The two young Gryffindors shook hands and Phineas couldn't help but feel good about the new acquaintance he had made. One could never have enough of those, his mother used to say. Amanda was her name and Phineas wondered whether she was a pureblood or not. While his parents taught him to act respectfully towards all people, regardless of their social or blood status, they would still rather see him befriend children from 'reputable families' as they liked to call them. And having been brought up and solely interacting within those social circle, the young boy didn't know anything else than to share this belief. So, he actually hoped that Amanda was from a 'reputable' family. Mind you, he would never be so indecent and directly ask her about her heritage.

«I was certainly not», Phineas exclaimed rather loudly as she voiced the ridiculous possibility of him rope-jumping in a library. Still, his cheeks gained just the slightest bit of colour upon being caught. «I was merely trying to reach a book», he grumbled and pointed towards the shelf towering over the both of them in explanation. «But I guess I should go look for a ladder. You don't happen to have seen one nearby, have you Amanda?», he asked, watching his companion expectantly.

Miranda had woken up bright and early that morning, eager to get in a bit of extra studying for the Histoy of Magic exam she would be doing come Monday. Even though her past week had been consumed with studying various topics that could be included, she still wasn't satisfied, and had pulled out her notes first thing after getting ready to read them over. Unfortunately, due to her strict standards, some of the earlier notes had been poorly written and explained, at least in her eyes, and she'd decided to spend the beautiful morning in the library, searching for books to remedy the situation. Hopefully by lunch, she'd be done, and could go enjoy herself.

For now...work.

The library was quiet as she entered, except for the hushed murmurs from other students that must have had similar thoughts to her. Miranda ignored them, and started wandering down aisles, searching for telltale titles that were associated with her subject.

Suddenly, voices caught her attention, and Miranda sidestepped a care laden with books, turned a corner, and found herself facing two other students, both younger than her. They were talking, but she didn't catch any of their words before announcing her presence, nor did she try to.

"Ah, hello?" Miranda began, glancing back the way she'd come. "What are you doing here exactly?" Even though she was busy herself, the Ravenclaw found herself curious as to what they were doing, although she passed it off as a simply urge to help them find whatever they were looking for.

Amanda laughed as Phineas told her that he certainly did not, as she was joking with him. She had no room to talk though, because Amanda was no taller than he was.
"I'm sure we could find one." She stated. "These bookshelves are huge, even tall people would need a ladder to reach all the way to the top, right..? I can go ask the librarian, maybe?" Without waiting for an answer on her rhetorical question, she turned around to go walk to the desk of the librarian and was startled yet again by an older girl standing in front of her. She squeaked, jumping back in surprise before putting her hand over her heart again.
"Mighty M-Merlin..." She stammered, taking a shaky breath. She had been having an unlucky day with being startled by seemingly everything. She would have to work on being more cautious.
Amanda looked up at the girl when she greeted them and asked what they were doing here. She looked back at Phineas, before forward again.
"H-hi there, I was going to help my friend get a book down." She didn't even think before using the word friend, her eyes widening after she realized what she said. What if it was too early? What if she'd just creeped out her new possible friend not five minutes after meeting him?

Apparently, even Miranda's warning didn't stop the girl from being frightened by her presence. Well, she probably would have spooked as well if someone had suddenly appeared where you last thought no one was there. And Miranda had been told many times before that her aura was...almost other. That too tended to make others wary of her, although it was nothing near the effect Miranda felt whenever she walked near certain Dhampires, her head of house or her potions professor.

"Sorry if I startled you," Miranda said with an apologetic smile. "I just saw you and wondered if you needed help with anything?" She was oblivious to the book they were reaching for, and was instead meaning whether they were lost. She'd seen it happen to many others before, and had in fact encountered the same problem a large amount during her previous year as well.

"A book down?" Miranda asked, looking up at the higher shelves. "Which one exactly? I...might be able to get it for you. Depending on how high it is, really." The Ravenclaw was only average height for her age, nowhere near as tall as some of her friends.

Sometimes she found it strange how the library had been built so tall. Sure, it was large as well, but unless they'd planned to install ladders and had forgotten, wouldn't it have made more sense to build smaller, shorter shelves, just for simplicity's sake?

Just as Amanda turned around to find the librarian, another girl walked around the corner and asked them about their doings. Amanda was startled dead in her tracks, giving an other little yelp and slightly bumping into Phineas from the fright. He reached forward in case she lost her balance and lightly steadied her by the shoulders. Merlin, she sure was jumpy.
Then he eyed the newcomer. He didn't recognise the blonde girl from his classes, so she must have been older than the two first years. She looked friendly and after Amanda had given her an explanation about what exactly they were doing, she even offered to help get the book down.

Phineas smiled. She was a little taller, that was true, but even that was not enough to reach the shelf which towered high over their heads. "That's really nice of you...", he trailed off on a question, since he didn't know the girls name. "But it's the on that third shelf there", he added, pointing upwards. "Unless you can 'accio' it down or something?", he asked, his tone hopeful. He had no idea what year summoning spells were taught, but maybe she was old enough to have had it in her curriculum.

She thanked Phineas quietly for steadying her a bit, blushing from the embarrassment. She stepped to the side so they were standing next to each other, instead of standing in front of him, while the he talked to the older girl about which book he wanted to get down from a high shelf. She shook her head at the girls apology, "Don't worry about it..! I just get scared kinda easy, that's all. I really have to work on it, honestly." She smiled reassuringly, teasing herself a bit to lighten the mood. She was being honest, getting scared at everything was something she needed to fix, maybe by being more alert. This seemed to always happen to her. She got started at mostly everything, whether it was scary or not, it did not matter. It was a main weakness of hers, because she never expected it before it happened.
She was also happy that Phineas didn't seem to care that she called him her friend, and took a sigh of relief.
Amanda didn't know if this was her cue to leave the two to figure out how to get it down, but stuck around for the time being. She listened to the conversation, piping in when Phineas gave the idea of using a summoning spell.
"T-that's a good idea! Do you know one of those..?" She asked, looking to Miranda.
