Departure of the Hogwarts Express
@Logan Baird

Henry stepped off the Hogwarts Express and onto the station, not to say things didn't feel weird but something in the air felt different. Maybe it was the feeling that he was a second year now and instead of arriving to Hogwarts in boats, he would be taking carriages with the others. His messager type bag was in his trunk which was with the other trunks and would be in his dorm later that night which gave Henry his hands free of pulling or holding anything as he stepped off the platform of the train station and started to make his way toward the carriages with the others.

The evening, actually more like night seemed to be like a crisp English night. The wind was slightly chilly and with the darkness surrounding them a few stars above could be seen but Henry was focusing on the stars as he walked toward the carriages, he was focusing wad his new found hidden life and family. Henry couldn't help but let his mind dwell about them, he did have anxiety for a reason even though he keeps on promising himself to work on it. Which he never does unlike his stutter, Henry actually worked on is so much as a child that he hardly stutters now well unless he's very anxious or nervous but he passed that off as normal.

Dressed in his slytherin shirt which was untucked with his black pants but no belt, however his tie seemed to be on right along with his shoes. His slytherin robe however was unbuckled which he would have to fix before the feast, Henry still didn't understand why they were forced into their robes for the feast the first night. Henry saw it as a waste of time to dressed in wizarding robes but didn't dare let anyone know as he continued along the path to the carriages.

Henry couldn't help but look through the crowd for his best friend; Logan Baird. His matching friendship bracelet still on his left wrist as he looked for her, sadly the two couldn't meet up over the summer and he while he was hoping to find her on the train couldn't. So instead Henry sat in a total of three or four compartment either with new or old people but he did want to see Logan since it's been a few months since he got to chat and hang out with her.

Henry continue his search for his best friend even after he made it to the carriages but was stopped when a large black, leathery, and almost skeleton looking horse came into view. Henry walked around so he stood in front of the creature and almost instantly he knew it was a thestral. Henry read about them before and seen them around the grounds of Hogwarts before but he didn't expect that they pulled the carriages that students took to Hogwarts, only seen by people who seen death and invisible to others maybe that's why Hogwarts used them to pull the carriages.

Henry might have looked weird to someone who couldn't see them since they were invisible to mostly everyone, Henry on the other hand had seen death along with his siblings. He was six as he watched his mum die which allowed him to see the creature, he found it funny how such a beautiful and interesting creature could only be seen from a tragic accident. Henry lifted his hand a bit to touch it as he almost smiled at the creature.

The first day back at Hogwarts and Logan was excited. She hadn't been able to find any of her friends on the train, but she was determined to find at least one of them now. The young Hufflepuff was her Hufflepuff sweater, a black skirt, and flats, over all of that she had on her robes, perfectly buttoned so she looked presentable. She never understood the reason for wearing them for the sorting ceremony, but she didn't question it as it had been a tradition for years.

The first thing Logan spotted when getting off the train was that the carriages were not pulled by nothing, as she had heard from some older students that the carriages moved by themselves. Instead a creature, similar to a bat and a horse, pulled the carriages instead. "Thestrals," she muttered to herself as she noticed her best friend Henry Knight reaching out to pet one of the magnificent creatures.

Slowly she walked up behind the male with a smile on her face as she wrapped her arms around his waist and rested her chin on his shoulder. "They are magnificent creatures, aren't they," she muttered to the boy as she looked up at the horse like creature in front of her.

Logan had learned about Thestrals when she was only a little girl. Her father had taught her about them, even though she wasn't able to see them until recently.

Placing his hand on the nuzzle of the thestrals, Henry smiled in awe as it felt rather odd. It was almost like touching a horse but not really, there was something that Henry couldn't explain about it to. Henry was to lost in thought about it like usual so he didn't noticed when someone wrapped their arms around him and rested their chin on his shoulder, Henry recognized the voice to be Logan Baird; his best friend. Henry leaned his head against hers a bit as he agree, " yeah definitely they are magnificent and quite mysterious to really, I mean isn't it curious why only people who seen death can see them. Doesn't that sound odd sometimes, I wonder if anyone figured it out or wrote a book on it?"

Henry wondered if no one did then he would, he would love to know the answer but at that moment only on question was bubbling in his mind, one that he spoke " you can see them to Logan?" Henry knew about her mother's death since she told him and she knew about him being a werewolf but didn't expect her to also see thestrals also. Henry moved his hand back to his side before speaking again " have you seen.. or uh encountered them before Robin?" Being so young when he saw death basically meant Henry saw them his whole life as he spoke " I saw.. uh encounter them once before. When I was 8 and visiting Scotland with my siblings for my father's business."

Logan smiled as she slowly released Henry and reached her hand out to the large animal in front of her. Allowing the creature to set its muzzle into her hand, she sighed as she ran her hand across the leathery skin across its face. "My father once told me, the most beautiful creatures are only able to be seen by the people who are worthy of seeing them. I think this might be one of those cases." She whispered the last part as the horse like creature snorted at the two. Slowly, she pulled her hand away from the Thestral with a sigh.

"I was with my mother when the accident happened," Logan muttered a bit as she looked at Henry and gently tugged on the edges of her sleeves. It was habit she thought she had broken during first year, but apparently she hadn't completely. "Not in person I haven't seen them, my father has told me quite a bit about them though, as he has encountered them many times through work." She remembered the stories he would tell the kids when they were little about the beautiful horse like creatures that only special people could see. She didn't find out until her mother's passing that the only reason the people were special was because they had seen death.

Henry felt Logan release him and watched as he touched the creature to, hearing her words than feeling the breath of the thestral against his skin, Henry spoke " that's a beautiful way I'm putting it Logan, your lucky your father had such a explanation for them," Henry smiled at the creature as he remembered seeing then in Scotland when he was nine along with his siblings than asking his father what they were. Instead of lying or sugar coating it, their father simply said they were thestrals and only certain people can see them, only people who have seen death can see them.

Henry pulled back into the present, heard Lohan mutter and felt terrible for her as he wrapped his arm around her shoulders and squeezed her as he spoke to her " I'm sorry Logan, you never talk about her. Uh if you do ever want to talk about her then know we can Logan," Henry smiled at his friends keeping his arm around her but looking at the leathery creature in front of them.

Henry listened to her speak and when she finished, he then spoke " well now you seen them in person right," he smiled at her even though only those who saw death can seen them and probably brings on those memories Henry still always thought they were magnificent.

Logan smiled wistfully as she thought about her mother. "I might take you up on that offer," she muttered as she leaned against him gently. She was actually happy that he was taller than her, as she was able to do stuff like this. The young Hufflepuff lay her head against his shoulder as she held her hand out, allowing the horse-like creature to bring its face to her hand once again. It was rather soothing just to stand and look at the creatures.

"It is just sad that only people who have seen death can see them. Some people will never get to experience the beauty of these creatures." She knew that the Thestrals would not have a large effect on her life, but it was still rather depressing to think she would never get to see anything but drawings of the large animals.

In the back of her mind, she wondered it if would be much different to ride one of them compared to one of her horses, and it brought a smile to her face. "I can not help but compare them to my horses, I mean they are so different but also so similar at the same time. I just want to go horseback riding in the woods now." That was something Logan knew was not going to happen. She wasn't going to risk her life just to go horseback riding. She was just going to have to wait until Christmas break to see her horses again.

Henry watched as Logan hand touched the creature and heard her response. He felt her head on his shoulder and naturally grabbed her free hand and squeezed it by his side, he really did want her to feel comfortable telling him this stuff they were best friends and he really did want it help the girl. Although a part of Henry didn't want to see the thestrals at all, a part of him wished that something else happened that night his family was attacked, a part of him wished he didn't have to go home on holidays to a broken family, but then a part of him knew there wasn't much he could do to go back in time.

Henry heard her words and she was right, they were so mysterious and beautiful but yet only a few can see them. Only those who witness something as awful as death can see them, strange to the boy who stared at the leathery horse creature which allowed him to wonder our loud, " I wonder how many other students can see them," he stared at it wondering who else saw the horse type creature and no didn't.

With that thought he brought his hand up and let the thestral sniff his hand as he touched it's leathery and cold skin, a strange feeling on the skin yet in another way also comforting. Henry smiled a bit toward Logan before saying " they do resemble horses a bit? Maybe they share some genetics? I'm sure it would be interesting to ride them not to mention they have wings so fly with them as well Robin, maybe we can sneak a few away later to ride?" Henry laughed a bit toward her as he ran a hand through his hair before staring back at the creature before them

Logan sighed as she thought about how many students could actually see the Thestrals. "I doubt many students are able to see them. I bet a few of the professors can see them, but most of the students I feel have not seen what we have." Logan hated mentioning the death of her mother, but she knew she was going to have to come to terms with it at some point in her life. Her brothers had gotten over it mostly, but they were not as close with their mother as she was.

"We are not sneaking out to go Thestral riding." Logan snapped playfully as she shoved the boy beside her. She made sure to not startle the large creature in front of her when she did it. "My father would question why I was asking for my riding helmets to be sent to the school anyways. It isn't like there are that many reasons I would need them."

Logan knew for a fact her father would kill her himself if she snuck out to do something as stupid as try and ride a Thestral, he already hated it when she went horseback riding without a helmet, and the horses have been trained for years unlike the Thestrals. "If you want to risk your life to ride a Thestral, by all means, but I don't want you haunting me because of it."

The young Hufflepuff honestly did not want the boy to die, she would be left alone. If he was going to die for some reason, she also did not want it to be the same way her mother had died. It took months before she was able to get back onto a horse after the accident, she would probably never be able to ride again if it happened to Henry. "Promise me you aren't going to do anything stupid." Logan mumbled as she looked away from the boy and allowed some of her hair to hide the sorrowful look on her face.

Henry tonight over her words and figured she was right, hardly any student has seen death before although a few professor might have? Henry just nodded as he spoke " uh yeah your probably right," Henry kept it brief ad he figured if he hated mentioning or even thinking about that night that his mother died then the same might have gone for his best friend dealing with her known mothers death.

Henry chuckled a bit at Logan's clear hesitation of riding the thestrals at night. Henry always found it funny how similar yet also different they were from each other, like how he wanted to cause mischief and do something brave for once but never got the courage or over his panic to actually do it while Logan stayed away from mischief with evidence on why they shouldn't do something, which is something that Henry admired in his best friend.

Henry then rolled his eyes at her comment and with a smile he spoke " I will hundred percent haunt you, Robin. No question about it," Henry smiled a bit as his gaze wander back to the creature in front of them before he would reply to her next words, " don't worry I won't do anything stupid this year, Logan," he then wrapped his arms around her shoulders before leaning in as he joked in her ear, " but that's say I don't do anything stupid our third year."

"Of course you would haunt me," she muttered under her breath as she crossed her arms over her chest and huffed in slight annoyance. She listened to him talk and only rolled her eyes as he promised to not do anything stupid that year. Apparently third year was fair game for doing stupid things then.

"I will not be the one getting you out of trouble, just warning you now. I would prefer to not get a howler from my father because I got detention for trying to help you do something." Just the thought of getting a howler from her father made her shudder. She would prefer to not get embarrassed in front of the whole Great Hall when she got that.

Slowly she sighed as she uncrossed her arms and wrapped one of them around Henry's waist in a side hug. "I just can not stay angry at you, and that annoys me." It was true. She could never stay mad at the boy for long, there was just something about him that always allowed Logan to forgive him, no matter what he did to anger her in the first place. Even if it wasn't something that happened often, the two always seemed to forgive each other.
