“I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” Carolyn remembered a quote from one of her favorite muggle books. And wasn’t it the truth? Carolyn couldn't agree more.

“Do you like it Mordred?” The witch turned to look at her Egyptian Mau playing in the pile of leaves. He sure seemed happy enough. It was his first autumn so it was no wonder he was so fascinated with it. “Alright, you can play for a bit…just…Don’t go around scaring people, okay?” She warned the cat before sitting down and pulling out her sketchbook. It was a perfect opportunity for her to just sit down and relax. Carolyn didn’t have a chance to draw much since the new school year started. She was overwhelmed with bad news when she arrived to Hogwarts and then dove straight into learning new things. Unfortunately, that meant she didn't have time for much else. She always made sure to work hard and without any distractions. Still, it was about time she took a break.

Thankfully, Mordred knew better than to stray away. He was well trained and stayed close to his owner at all times. Now if only he was that well behaved when it came to other people as well. The girl sighed, looking at her fluffy friend fondly. We’ll get there, she reassured herself as she started working on her sketch. Surprisingly, for such beautiful day, there were not many people around so she allowed herself to get fully lost in her art, only occasionally checking on her pet. It was exactly what she needed…

❝ Not getting caught is half the fun. ❞

Illya had sent a letter to his father today, getting aquainted with the owls in the Owlery thanks to a Hogwarts student who was willing to explain it to him. He didn't attend classes like the Hogwarts students did, he mingled in different parts of the castle out of fun and talked to his friends. But he diverted from the usual a little today because he was very happy to see the weather and foliage that draped the cobble like carpet.

He picked a few leaves up upon entering the courtyard, twirling them slightly as he was rather interested in their shape and color. He opened his journal and slotted a particularly nice looking one within the page, perhaps he could preserve it later. The stem stuck out, which he neatly and gingerly tucked in until he heard the rustling of something just not too far from him. Illya tucked the small journal back into his peacoat before stepping past one of the pillars to see the back of who he thought was a girl.

He didn't want to seem weird for intruding, so his footsteps brushed through the floor to come around. The Durmstrang student made a bit of a half-circle to come around and finally see what she was looking at, a cat. It was a rather cute looking one too and so he approached just halfway, worried of scaring her companion away. Illya folded his hands behind his back and tilted his head, his expression mirrored a sincere curiosity as his warm brown gaze fell on the feline.

❝ If you do not mind me asking, what is its name? ❞ He stuck to calling the cat 'it' as he didn't know it's gender at all. But he was interested in making small talk with the student as well, this seemed like an ideal way to start one if she was going to entertain the idea at all. Not all students wanted to talk, which was understandable. But Illya shot his shots when and where he could, sometimes he missed and sometimes he didn't.

There was no ulterior motive behind most of his conversations, he didn't have anything to gain or lose but some information and maybe a potential acquaintance. But the weather seemed right, so did the timing, and maybe this was the perfect opportunity. Fall sometimes felt like new beginnings and he felt like Hogwarts was a new beginning to him, just a little.

Carolyn was nearly finished with her sketch when a voice brought her back to reality. Not just any voice either. It was clearly laced with Bulgarian accent, which she recognized well after the summer camp. She was of course aware that the Durmstrang students arrived to Hogwarts and she had seen them wandering around but had yet to talk to one. Being naturally curious about other cultures as she was, the young witch definitely wanted to get to know them. Especially since she was a mix of two cultures herself. What she lacked however, was the courage to approach any of them. Well…apparently the odds were in her favor today.

Carolyn slowly lifted her head to look up at the stranger. Thankfully, his steps were loud enough to alert her of his presence so she was not entirely caught off guard. He is quite handsome, the witch noted absentmindedly. "Oh... Hello," she greeted the boy with a soft smile. She knew how to be polite even if she wasn't the best at talking to strangers. It was fortunate that her pet became the conversation starter. She always found it easier to talk about animals. "His name is Mordred," Carolyn revealed without any hesitation. She then looked at her fluffy friend to check his reaction. He didn't try to approach the boy but his head was titled to the side, obviously curious. That is a good sign, the girl thought immediately. “Unfortunately, he is not very friendly when it comes to people. Although, he seems to be okay with you. It will most likely take him a bit longer to decide,” she said apologetically. “Ah, but where are my manners,” she said while setting her sketchbook aside and standing up to offer the boy her hand. “I’m Carolyn. I hope you are enjoying your stay here,” she said with a smile, hoping he would accept her hand. She would feel extremely embarrassed if he didn’t.

Carolyn knew some of the Durmstrang students weren’t too impressed by Hogwarts and they were not afraid to show it. She generally tried to avoid those types. It was somewhat admirable how proud they were of their own school but it was also disrespectful towards their host. All the staff here did their best to accommodate their guests. Not to mention they and had to manage the ball preparations at the same time. It probably wasn’t easy. This one however seemed okay so far. Unless he just pretended to be and came here to tease her. If that was the case though, he definitely chosen the wrong girl. She would not give him the reaction he wanted. That was just not something one could do easily when it came to Carolyn. In fact, it was very hard to crack her calm composure. Well, I suppose I’ll just have to wait and see. She never liked people who were quick to judge others without really getting to know them and she would always make sure not do it herself.

❝ Not getting caught is half the fun. ❞

“Unfortunately, he is not very friendly when it comes to people. Although, he seems to be okay with you. It will most likely take him a bit longer to decide,” Illya smiled at that, the coated student slowly crouched down a little to meet its gaze. ❝ Mordred, I see. ❞ He looked up and over to the Hogwarts student as she began to speak again, reminding himself that he shouldn't divert his attention too much.

“Ah, but where are my manners,” As she came to meet him halfway, the student stood up once more to clasp his own hand around hers. He gave it a firm but gentle shake, doing his utmost best to be a gentleman to one of the school's many students. Thankfully, his hand was in his pocket before so it wasn't as cold as the fall winds. “I’m Carolyn. I hope you are enjoying your stay here.”

She had a gracious smile and she was without a doubt pretty in his opinion, it crinkled the edge of his eyes slightly as his own grew into a half grin. ❝ That is a beautiful name. It is a pleasure to meet you Carolyn, I am Illya. ❞ The Bulgarian's accent was thick, prompting him to speak slow and low.

There was often a hum in his voice, but he sounded as sincere as he could be. Carolyn's name sounded nice to his ears, just as nice as it was to say it. He withdrew his hand and slipped them into his pockets, pushing back the coat slightly. He wore a comfortable turtleneck for the weather with the darker toned peacoat to contrast it. ❝ But thank you, I am enjoying this place. It is a lot ... ❞

His head tilted up slightly, brown eyes drifting as his expression held some confusion. What was the word he was trying to describe Hogwarts? It was the atmosphere, the ambience, but he had a trouble pinning it down as English wasn't his first language.

Descriptors weren't the same for him, they were rather different. ❝ Warm. It is uh ... warm. ❞ Clearly, the temperatures weren't warm. But the Durmstrang student shot her an apologetic smile. ❝ Sorry, I do not know how to say it. ❞ Attempting to backpedal, Illya cleared his throat with a stifled laugh. ❝ How are you today? ❞

“It’s nice to meet you too Illya,” she said reciprocating his grin with a smile of her own. Ah…the compliments…she never quite knew how to react to those. Carolyn tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear to buy herself time. It was quite long, reaching the lower half of her back and the wind didn’t make it any easier on her. “Really? I always thought it’s a pretty boring name. Especially compared to my classmates here,” she admitted begrudgingly. “But…thank you. It’s very kind of you to say.”

“But thank you, I am enjoying this place. It is a lot ...” It was Illya’s turn to be thankful apparently but he seemed to be struggling finding the right words. Carolyn didn’t blame him, she actually appreciated the effort and admired his courage to put himself out there even if his English wasn’t perfect. “Don’t worry about it. I get what you mean,” she said encouragingly. “I remember when my grandparents started teaching me Korean. Learning new language is not easy but honestly, using it is the best way to master it. Mistakes is how you learn.” It was probably her inner Ravenclaw talking but Carolyn didn’t want him to feel embarrassed. She also hoped that sharing the fact that she had a similar experience might make talking to her a bit easier for the boy. “I’m doing well, thank you. The weather is lovely. It’s nice to be outside for once. Sitting in the library or being copped up in the ballroom constantly probably isn’t the best way to spend all of my free time... I tend to forget myself sometimes,” she chuckled quietly. It was true. Whenever she started working, time passed her by without her even noticing. Thankfully, the sun was strong enough to lure her out today. “How are you? Have you got everything you need here?” She asked with a smile.

❝ Not getting caught is half the fun. ❞

RATHER than teasing him or making fun of his inability to properly communicate, she seemed to reassure him and his brows rose ever so slightly. One end of his mouth curled ever so slightly from behind the raised collar on his jacket. He brushed his hand against his jaw as a small noise that was barely audible slipped from the back of his throat. She was nice, direct, and honest. Illya couldn't help but fixate on her words now as she spoke, no longer was he letting his eyes wander the courtyard. ❛ How are you? Have you got everything you need here? ❜

The fourth year gave a subtle nod and his expression relaxed, his hands coming to fold behind his back out of habit. ❝ Yes, I can not say I need more. I am happy. ❞

Illya closed some distance between them, having found it weird that they were talking with such a great amount of space. ❝ But I was learning ... a little, your school. ❞ He cleared his throat and opened his mouth, a slight frown on his features. Sometimes his mouth couldn't keep up with his mind and confusion was inevitable. But with her, he didn't think she'd be too harsh of a critic over him.

He moved his hands, making a few gestures before he apologetically looked back at the Hogwarts student. ❝ About it. Interested. ❞ A humming laughter shook his shoulders slightly, sounding embarrassed as he released his hands from behind. There was something on his mind, plus a thing he wanted to attend and if he could, with someone. His dialogue was inconsistent, which would be even better if he had someone like Carolyn to learn from. ❝ Are you going to dance? ❞ Despite his demeanor, he made a humorous motion when he mentioned 'dance'.

Mordred went back to playing with his pile of colourful leaves while his owner continued to speak with the boy. He seemed to let his guard down around the stranger and Carolyn didn’t have too much trouble doing the same. She was by no means naive or overly trusting individual but Illya looked like a decent person and he felt much less intimidating now that she knew his weakness. She found his struggling almost adorable. It was not that she enjoyed his suffering but he reminded her so much of her younger self. She remembered how frustrating it was to find the right words in Korean back then but she pulled through and she believed the Bulgarian boy would do the same. “Don’t worry, you’ll get there,” she encouraged Illya with a smile and waited patiently so he could get his point across. “

“Oh yes. Hogwarts is an amazing place,” she chuckled quietly along with the boy, happy that he didn’t take himself too seriously. “I have been here for some time but I’m still learning and finding new places.” It was a shame that she didn’t have anything to compare it to. “I would love to visit Durmstrang one day too. It sounds a bit intimidating to be honest but all the more interesting.” Carolyn wondered whether she would ever get the chance to see his school or any other for that matter. It would be amazing for sure. That was a question for another day though, for now, she was glad somebody else got to enjoy the adventure.

❝ Are you going to dance? ❞ Carolyn looked up upon hearing the question. She has been asking herself the same one for couple of days now. In all honesty, she was very excited about the ball announcement but then everybody started looking for partners and suddenly, she felt nervous and very out of place. She didn’t have anybody in mind and even if she did, Carolyn didn’t think she would be brave enough to ask. “Well, I think so? I do like to dance,” she admitted finally, chuckling at his humorous gesture. “It’s just…” Carolyn wasn’t quite sure whether she wanted to admit the next part. Well, at least he will be able to keep up with me. She realised that now it was her, who was having trouble with speech only it had nothing to do with language. It’s a bit embarrassing…going alone. Her brain finished the thought. She didn’t dare to say it aloud though. Illya would either laugh at her or pity her and neither reaction was very desirable. “Never mind, it’s not important.” The young witch cleared her throat awkwardly. “What about you? Do you like to dance?” She tried to mask her plight with another question.

❝ Not getting caught is half the fun. ❞

The awkward pause was something that Illya was sort of expecting, their conversation felt a little disjointed anyway. With how she was wording her answer, it sounded a little childish in the most polite sense. It wasn't demeaning, but it certainly didn't sound right to his ears when she replied to the fact that 'she liked to dance'. The young man slowly arched his brow as she cleared her throat, it was bereft and jaunted. His lips parted for a moment, seemingly a little speechless before he quickly nodded. ❝ I um — yes, I do. I like to dance. ❞

A smile slowly returned to his features, warm and mainly natural. Illya's gaze flicked to Mordred rather curiously, his movement was eye-catching and his attention sometimes waned when he wasn't confident in what he was about to say. ❝ I was going to ball, dance. I ... have no partner. ❞ The last part came out rather carefully as he turned his head to look back at her past the collar of his coat.

In that moment, Illya made the split second decision to boldly ask something to someone who he frankly just met. It was a bit of a gamble and rejection wasn't the worst thing in the world, but he was willing to gamble the odds. Illya took a lot risks in Hogwarts already, he wasn't reckless, but he acted on spontaneity.

Impulsive? A little. The Durmstrang student turned to her, meeting her eyes with his own as his head tilted and his hands found his pockets. ❝ Will you attend the ball with me, Carolyn? If you do not have the partner yet. ❞ The delivery was quick, like water spilling from a bucket, but slow that he nearly enunciated every word because of his language barrier.

But he sounded sincere and even in the smallest nuance, had a sliver of worry. Even the most inflated self-affirmation had their cracks, his were tiny and came in the form of a tilted smile. If she said 'no', there was no harm inflicted. If she said 'yes', he was eager to learn more about her if she gave him a chance.

There was an awkward moment after Carolyn’s stuttering answer but she only had herself to blame. Illya already struggled to understand English without her embarrassing mumbling. Still, it didn’t take too long to salvage the situation. Mordred was a welcome distraction and the boy didn’t dwell on it too much. In any case, she was glad he enjoyed dancing. Many boys couldn’t be bothered to even try. Unless he’s just being polite, her brain supplied almost immediately.

❝ I was going to ball, dance. I ... have no partner. ❞ Carolyn raised her eyebrows, looking somewhat surprised. She assumed their guests would have no trouble finding a partner and this one was quite handsome too. Perhaps it just wasn’t his priority and now he was running out of time. ❝ Will you attend the ball with me, Carolyn? If you do not have the partner yet. ❞ It took Carolyn a moment to process his request. He spit it out too quickly and his accent definitely wasn’t helping. Thankfully, the young witch was a good listener and her grandparents sometimes tried to speak English to her too so she was no stranger to rushed words and broken English. “Really?” She blinked in surprise. She was quite sure Hogwarts was filled with much more interesting girls than she was. Perhaps he just didn’t have a chance to meet them yet. If she was completely honest, Carolyn was selfishly glad he didn’t. “No…Yes,” she stuttered, blushing a little. She was usually very calm and collected young lady but this was the first time she had such interaction with a boy. “I’m sorry.” Carolyn did her best to regain her composure before continuing. She felt bad for her confusing answer after noticing the subtle worry in Illya's face. “I mean No, I don’t have a partner and yes, I would love to go with you,” she said with a smile. “Thank you for asking.”

She truly was grateful. Now she didn’t have to feel so nervous about attending the ball and she was also curious about her partner. Illya looked like an interesting individual and it was somewhat reassuring that he was not attending Hogwarts. That way, they would have plenty to talk about and if things turned sour between them, she wouldn’t have to constantly avoid him. Carolyn just had to hope one evening was not enough to regret his departure too much. Then again, the young Ravenclaw was usually not someone to get attached quickly so it should be okay. Right?

❝ Not getting caught is half the fun. ❞

'No'. Illya inwardly sighed. 'Yes'. The Durmstrang student opened his mouth, looking rather confused. ❛ I mean No, I don’t have a partner and yes, I would love to go with you,❜ A near wheeze escaped the teen's slightly parted lips, albeit it was largely a short chuckle that rolled from his lips. ❝ I see. ❞ Illya sounded relieved, happy even. He couldn't describe it, but he was happy to know that she was at least interested in his offer. But, he wanted to know more about Carolyn now and maybe talk with her more about the ball itself. ❝ Perfect, I look forward to seeing you. ❞

This wasn't the first time he asked a person, but it was the first time he asked a person from another place. Sometimes, he could be too candor and it was intense for some people. It could be for people who weren't used to living in Durmstrang too, that could be the case. Scaring her away was the last thing he ever wanted to do, but understandable if she completely said no. Instead, she seemed to entertain the idea.

Illya brushed his hand back through his hair and let his hands fall to his side. ❝ But are you busy for today I want to know you more, more about Hogwarts too. ❞ The last bit was tacked on to soften the intentions, he could already pick up how upfront he was becoming in front of the girl. His brows scrunched slightly, his mind quickly jumped to some assurances. ❝ Uh, if it is okay? You can ask me too. ❞ He usually got asked a plethora of questions, mainly about their school and sometimes he was about to flex the fact that his father taught here not too long ago.
