The new school year had begun earlier that month and it was now approaching the end of September and Alina had no contact with one of her best friends. Sure, she saw Rose here and there in the Great Hall at meal times and managed to get in a wave but that just wasn't good enough!

This is where being friends with someone from a different house got complicated. You didn't get to sit next to them at breakfast, lunch, or supper. It was rare you got into the same classes. You didn't share a Common Room or dormitory. Still, with a good friend like Rose it was worth the difficulties and Alina knew she would just have to make time for them.

So she wrote a note to Rose and asked a first year Gryffindor girl to deliver it.

Meet me in the library!
Alina Rosier

Then she packed up her bag and rushed off to the library, grabbing a place for them to sit before it got too crowded. Too crowded, ha. This was the Library after all and it really only got crowded near exam times. Still, that didn't mean she didn't want to get a more comfortable place to sit than one the large wooden tables...or have to be near some annoying Ravenclaws.

So she got there, opened up her bag of lemon drops, and sat looking over her History of Magic reading assignment while she waited.

Alina Rosier- energetic and fun, happy and bubbly. Rose had noticed she was off. She was almost... serious? It made her feel weird to think about it. Rose and Alina hadn't had a chance to catch up so far, even though they considered each other best friends. Between Rose's new boyfriend, the start of school, and everything they were both dealing with, they hadn't found the time until now. Rose was glad Alina had made the first move with them meeting- it was like fate pushed them into a hug.
Rose crept into the library. The library was her refuge at times, though more in the colder months when she couldn't go outside. It was always quiet or close enough, and a perfect place to curl up with a book or homework and just focus.
So she had come here as fast as she could to meet up with Alina.
The brightest smile dawned on her face as she spied her dear friend, and made her way over to her. Rose sat down next to her. "Hi Alina! How are you?" She was so very obiously bubbly today with happiness that they got to catch up. She tried to keep her voice low, which honestly wasn't too hard for Rose on a normal day, but today the excitement was catching up to her. "I missed you, I'm glad we get to catch up." And then she spied the lemon drops- Alina's staple, and also a favorite of Rose's. "Can I have one?"

"Oh Rose, I can't BEGIN to tell you how nice it is to see you,"
she said truthfully. Alina thought about scouting her out on the Hogwarts Express on the way to school but figured she probably wanted to sit with her boyfriend and didn't need depressed mopey un-boyfriended Alina there to bring her down.

"Take as many as you'd want. I think I've got an entire trunk full still back in my dorm and have an order for the beginning of the month for more." Yes, she actually had them on order frequently, an automatic sort of thing so she was never without her favorite candy. "It's crazy that we haven't gotten together yet but Second Year is SO busy!" The classes were more difficult and carried out more homework. Everything just seemed to be such a rush. "I'm glad you were able to make it. I hope I didn't interrupt your studies or any plans with others."

"How have you been?" she asked. There was Eyre that she was so excited about. Alina wondered if the two of them were still a couple and still going strong. She herself had met several new people - mostly first years - and she wondered if Rose had any new friends. And then there was a slight worry about home and her mother and she wondered if that sort of thing had been sorted out or not.

She hoped that Rose would tell her ALL of it because that was the kind of friendship that they had. And she hoped, even though a bit of time passed and a lot had gone on, that the two could catch up right where they left off as they always seemed to.

Rose laughed. "Of course you do." Alina never seemed to be without lemon drops- of course she had an entire stock. Rose had thought about giving her lemon drops one time, but she obviously didn't need any more of them. She reached over, taking one from the bad and slipping it in her mouth. "These really are good," she commented, moving the lemon drop to the side of her mouth so she could suck on it while telling Alina how she had been.
"No, you didn't interrupt anything, right now is a perfect time."

Where to start? Where would she even begin to catch Alina up. With a smile, she started, "Eyre and I are still going strong, though there has been some drama between him and his childhood friend," Rose trailed off, thinking of how she had approached Anastasia Beckett that one day, and how he had told her about how she had ditched him by the train station. "I tried to help but it kinda... just... made everything worse between them," she admitted, flushing a little bit- she really regretted approaching Anastasia now, though it had seemed the right thing to do at the time. "Not that it hurt anything between me and Eyre, it's just a little stressful. But as long as we steer clear of them, we'll be okay." Yes. They would be okay. Of course they would be okay. Her and Eyre were perfect for each other, like the chef's kiss. Nothing could tear them apart. Of course not. "I... got detention for something I didn't do," Rose mentioned the exploding of the cauldrons, a hint of sarcasm and exasperation in her expression. She had hated herself for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, hated herself for getting detention even if it wasn't her fault. "You were there for that. I still can't believe..." she shook her head. "My sister is lonely now that she's at home by herself... but she's really strong and I know she'll get through it." Rose had sent her aunt a letter this week asking her to check up on Jessica every once in a while. She had gotten a letter back from Aunt Colette, saying that, yes, she would totally check on Jess, though Rose hadn't gotten an owl from Jess yet saying anything about their Aunt Coco- she hadn't gotten an owl at all from Jess since she sent an owl to Aunt Coco. Which could be a good thing or a very very bad thing.

That pretty much summed up the first month of their second year. "What about you? What have you been up to so far?" Rose asked curiously. In her mind, unless there was a hint otherwise, Alina was going to tell her the truth- that's just how their relationship worked. Rose trusted Alina to tell her the truth and Alina trusted Rose.

"Oh, I've been up to a little bit of this and a little bit of that,"
she said with a shrug, not really sure where to start. The two girls couldn't go THIS long without really talking again because she hated to hear about the drama with Eyre's friend but was glad it didn't affect his relationship with Rose. She hated to hear about Rose's sister but was glad her bond with Eyre was still strong. She didn't even feel jealous of it, because she wanted happiness for her friend. Just because her and Clifton didn't work out, didn't mean she wanted everyone to meet such a fate.

"I met some of the new first years and made some new friendships. I've been writing to Bella."
She still hadn't heard from her father.

Not
one
word.

"I've been thinking of joining the Hufflepuff dueling team and I've been working on my painting skills...or maybe lack thereof?" she laughed a little. Towards the end of the prior school year she tried to teach herself to self paint and honestly...she was a lot better than she had expected. "I've been charting various plants that I find on and around the castle grounds."

What else?

"Oh, and remember how we said that we should maybe think about planning a double date sometime? We should do that. I've umm..."
she was hesitant to say it outloud but this was Rose. "I've got myself a new boyfriend. He's a Gryffindor like you. First Year though. Logan Zarcovich," she said, using Logan's nickname. It's what people would know him as instead of Aemadall.

"Oh yeah, how is Bella doing at Beauxbatons? Making friends and stuff?" Rose remembered how Alina had told her that Bella was transferring to Beauxbatons, and Rose could only imagine how that crushed her- Rose would be crushed if one of her siblings left to another country. She could only imagine how crushed Alina would have been to loose her look-alike and the person that was always there, just suddenly... poof. "Getting the fresh start she was looking for?" When Rose had gone to Alina's house castle over the summer for their sleepover, Bella had seemed a little bit like a jerk, but Rose knew Alina loved her.

"Oh, I thought of joining the dueling club, too!" Rose commented. Rose hoped with all her heart and mind that if they both got in, they wouldn't be set against each other. Rose would never forgive herself if she accidentally hurt Alina. It was dueling, though. Alina would understand, and Rose would understand.

Rose continued to suck on the lemon drop as Alina stammered out that she had a new boyfriend.

"What?"

Rose's eyebrows shot up. Rose was never informed that her and Clifton weren't dating, let alone that Alina had a new boyfriend. "Okay, I would still love to do a double date, but... I'm lost." Rose really was. When was Clive out of the picture, and when did this guy named Logan come in? Apparently a lot could happen in a month and a half. Rose felt like such a bad friend for not knowing this. She had thought it weird that she hadn't seen Clive around, or in the classes that the Gryffindors had with their Hufflepuff fellow second years. He had just... disappeared. "What happened with Clive?"

Was it Logan that split them apart? Was it someone else? Did Clifton move away? Did she- did he- did they-

"I can't imagine being without him," she had said. She had kissed him, told him that she loved him, they had spent two weeks together. She could only imagine how that hurt. And once he left, within a month, she had a new boyfriend.

Rose was really, really lost.

What happened?

"Umm," she paused and felt insecure because she wanted to fill Rose in on everything but she knew if she thought about it too long, if she thought about HIM too long, she'd break down into tears and no one needed to hear that fill the Library on that evening.

"Well...uh, we both went to visit Alexa Mackenzie's farm toward the end of Summer. She's a Hufflepuff and one of our best friends. It was great but he had to leave early. I knew something was wrong. This Summer had been a little crazy with uh..." did she lie? She didn't want to put Clifton in any sort of danger if she was spilling things to the wrong person but this was Rose. Her Rose. One of her best friends. No, she could trust her.

"Summer had been a little crazy with finding out who his birth parents were and how they were in Azkaban and just a lot of crazy things with someone pretending to be from the Ministry. Like...REALLY crazy things." Scary things. Dangerous things.

"His parents, Josh and Esme, the ones I stayed with for a week," she paused because she wondered if they were all okay. She certainly hoped so, "they had gotten contacted by the ACTUAL Ministry of Magic and needed to relocate."

"It's rather silly because when he wrote to me to meet him at the train station I was just excited to see him. I thought it was a surprise visit because he missed me but it was to tell me goodbye. He and his parents and his little sister had to go in hiding and he needed to be away from the wizarding world. Far away from it. No contact at all. No letters. No...hope of seeing him again."

She stopped and played a little bit with her hands the way she always did when she was nervous. It was good to keep her mind occupied but it wasn't working so well this time because she could feel the tears coming into her eyes. "I mean, I know we're so young and all but we had this connection, this bond. I don't care if I was eight and met him. He could have asked for me to wait for him. He SHOULD have asked for me to wait for him," she began raising her voice and a few students glanced over to give her sharp looks and she looked down.

"I would have. Even if it meant always being alone. I would have waited. I would have," she was clearly upset by it all. "I've been writing him letters in a journal which is so completely STUPID because he won't read them. Ever. But I write because I gave him too much of myself. I relied on him too much. I trusted him with myself too much and now it's gone. I've got this void that's just there and it's like a black hole that just wants to consume the rest of me."

She probably sounded like a pathetic girl and while she was, she knew that what her and Clifton had wasn't just some young love. It was destiny.

"I'm so mad at him but its not his fault. He needed to protect himself and his birth parents and his adopted parents, and little Clover. ...And I love him for that."

Alina was quiet for a moment because she knew she had said quite a lot, and quite a lot that she had been holding in.

"I met Logan when we first returned to Hogwarts when I was trying to make my map. I became his unofficial tour guide and I guess....maybe I just liked the moments were I wasn't reminded about how lonely I was. Is that so bad?" She looked to Rose, truly wondering if it was bad.

"I like him though. He's fun to be around and we have some things in common and he talks of mythology and its neat to learn about, to hear about. He's smart and protective and he's naturally good at quidditch and he's nice to look at." She really didn't ever want to treat the boy as some rebound, and she cared for him...she just knew it wasn't anything like what her and Clifton had. That didn't mean it couldn't grow though, right? And that didn't mean it couldn't still be good.

Rose's gentle attention on Alina didn't waver as the story unfolded in the words Alina told her.

His parents had been in Azkaban? Alina was clearly upset as she said it all. These were scary things, horrible things to have happened. And Alina clearly had been stressed out by this- nobody should have to worry about these kinds of things, if Clifton was okay, if she was ever going to see him again. He could die and she would never know, or they could be reunited tomorrow.

But, more than the stress on Alina, Rose could only imagine the kind of stress on Clifton. How was he supposed to make the choice between his family and his friends? Who would be able to live with a choice like that? And how was he supposed to do that with a good conscience? How was he supposed to please everyone with a choice like that? How was he supposed to leave his family, not knowing what was going to happen to them?

Alina talked for longer than Rose had expected. She was clearly upset, and when she paused for too long, Rose almost told her that they didn't have to talk about it if she didn't want to, but she would continue right as Rose was sucking in the air to say it.

"I'm so sorry," She whispered, still taking in all of it. It was all so unfair. Unfair to Clifton. Unfair to his family. Unfair to Alina. She didn't deserve this.

Waiting forever, being lonely forever, while other people date around her? Waiting for Clifton forever? Forever? With that kind of loyalty to him, and imagining Alina waiting forever, only for Clifton to never come for her? The worst part was that Rose could imagine Alina doing that. Being alone forever like that. For Clifton. For her Mr. Troublefield. Rose's heart melted a little bit. That was the kind of loyalty people wrote books about.

And Logan? Rose shook her head. "No, I can't imagine that would be bad. You're moving on. I mean, if you had been miserable and waited for Clive forever, never moving on from him... I think that would have been... bad. It's good to move on." Rose did think so. But, in the back of her mind, she wondered what would happen if Clive did come back. Would she have to choose between them? Would she choose Clive and make Logan feel like a placeholder? Would she choose Logan and make Clive feel like he was being punished for leaving her? Would she be torn and not choose either of them? Would Clive move on and get a new muggle girlfriend?

Why was life so complicated?

Rose's head was swimming with all the new information. "That's so unfair."

There was enough time for Alina to say something else if she wanted to. The girls sat in silence for a minute, and Rose wasn't sure what else to say. How were they going to follow up on that conversation?

Rose remembered that Alina had mentioned that she was working on her painting skills (or maybe lack thereof). "It would be fun to see your paintings sometime. I'm sure you're getting really good by now." Come on. We're talking about Alina Rosier, the girl of many talents and surprises.

"I'll bring some around sometime and show you...we could have a right sort of art gallery showing,"
she smiled softly, her smile not quite as big as it normally was. She didn't want to be a downer though and wouldn't be...she just needed a moment to rebound after spilling so much. She really hadn't gone into that much detail with anyone about Clifton, nor had she told anyone about the letters/journal she had been writing.

Alina liked to be organized and confident and well put together; not the general mess that Rose saw before her. Good to change the subject. She was glad for that. "I was doing acrylics last year but honestly I don't know what I was thinking," she smiled again, this time feeling better since the conversation was getting further away from the one prior.

"Maybe I thought I was a right Monet or something. One of the days I actually took a canvas with me up to the stands of the Quidditch Pitch just to pain in solitude and under the sun." Granted it wasn't a HUGE canvas but she still probably looked a right sort.

"I've pretty much moved onto watercolors now. The paper can be found in books and journals and sketchpads of sorts, and the paint is smaller, more compact. It also dries really really fast so when I just paint between classes or whatever I don't have to worry about it as much because by the time I'm up and moving, it's mostly dried."

Another sort of replacement in essence, although this one had no personal emotions attached to it. "Plus I like the softness of it and how you can vary the intensity of the colors and mix your own colors to get a perfect match."

Rose knew Alina liked the conversation to be happy, and Alina's pride wouldn't let her cry. Not here. Not in front of all these people. So Rose was a little relieved when she accepted the change of subject.

"I would love to see them sometime."

Alina explained her painting journey to Rose, talking about how she started with acrylics and then moved on to watercolors. That would explain her painting during class, just experimenting with the colors and everything. "That's cool," Rose commented. She thought back to her younger days. "I used to do watercolors when I was really little... Granted, I was definitely not as good as you are now, but it was really fun pretending I was like, a famous artist." She was maybe only five or six, but the watercolors had been the closest to art that she had ever done. She had felt amazing that she could do such a thing. Even though her older sister, Faith, was still better than her. Even though her mom was still better than her. Oh, those days when she hadn't felt bad when someone was better than her. Those days when she just lived freely.

But honestly? Rose knew barely anything about art.

"Is there any specific reason you wanted to join the duelling club?"
