The steam powered engine was equal parts more mundane than Hiero had been expecting, and far more whimsical. It was one of those sleek new trains that were popping up everywhere, that boasted high speeds and could get you easily from once place to the next. No, the Hogwarts express was equal parts new and old, ordinary and awe-inspiring, cozy and full of possibilities. The moment Hiero stepped on the train he felt a bit more centered. With the train under his feet it was far less likely to be a huge hoax.

He had never seen a place quite like this train. The students that filled it were quite odd, the interactions they had, some of the words they spoke. It seemed most of the older kids were just excited to be there and to be back to doing magic. Hiero didn't even know they stopped doing magic, but considering the amount of times he overheard it he assumed it was a common issue. It was even harder to picture him as one of those kids next year, walking around like he understood everything. No right now he still felt like he was in a dream.

Hiero was early enough to the train, thanks to his mother ushering him out of the house all the while muttering 'what am i doing' under her breath. It was a rhetorical question but even if it hadn't been, Hiero would have had no idea what to say to that. You are putting your oldest son on a train to a magical world you didn't know existed a few months ago. It sounded out of this world, not just that this so called magical school existed but that his mother would ever let me actually go to it. He half expected the moment the witch left their house after explaining everything, that his mother would just pretend it never happened and they would continue on life as normal. Thankfully though, they didn't, and now he was making his way down the train passageway looking around for a place.

Seeing as he was earlier than most there was an empty compartment or two, he didn't want to intrude on anyone else at that moment so he slipped into an empty one. He had no idea how full the train usually got for students. He wondered idly if they ever had to expand the train somehow if an influx of students arrived for the school year. Or maybe the train was already expanded, I mean it was a magic train right? Or perhaps it wasn't, maybe it was just a normal steam powered train. Hiero wasn't sure. He didn't know anything and he knew he would sound stupid to any wizarding child that sat with him and started talking to him. Perhaps there were others around like him though as well. He wondered how common someone like him was in this world. And if it was common, perhaps they would be a good friend to make. Or maybe it made more sense to stick with those who knew what they were talking about, then he could learn from them.

Pondering the possibilities of new friends, Hiero slid into the compartment and took a seat near the window. He had bought a bunch of new school books he was dying to peruse. What kind of spells would he be learning? He had a potions book, what about what was in there? He was excited just to read about what ingredients there were. He didn't particularly consider himself an academic type but when faced with so much new stuff, he just wanted to take it all in. So Hiero pulled out his textbooks and opened the one on top and started reading about something called the 'Wand-Lighting Charm'.

A pair of large, bright blue eyes peered into the compartment when a girl who looked around Hieronymus' age shyly peeked around the door. She scanned the small space, curious who else, if anyone, might have been present, before clearing her throat and knocking lightly on the side of the door.

"Um...excuse me," she spoke up in a quiet but clear voice. "Is...are these seats taken?" She gestured around at the empty spaces around the other boy.

The girl kept her hand other hand clasped on the handle of her own trunk behind her, unsure about entering until she was sure the other youth would be alright with her entering. Her curious gaze alighted upon the book he had picked up and she lowered her head slightly in what seemed to be embarrassment, perhaps worried she had interrupted his reading. Aqua blue irises darted back over her shoulder, signaling her consideration of simply turning around and going back the way she had come so as not to disturb the compartment's occupant any more than she already had. Still, it would have been awkward to just leave after she had already spoken up.

Clearly at odds with herself, she lingered uncertainly in the doorway, shifting from foot to foot as though she could not keep still while awaiting her peer's response. If, that was, he decided to respond at all. She dearly hoped he would, for she wasn't fond of the idea of remaining wedged in the entrance and potentially stopping up the narrow train corridor behind her while waiting for an answer that would never come.
