What was once anticipated to be a train ride fueled solely on the essence of Persephone’s apprehension was instead rather dull. The girl’s harsh stare remained locked on the window she sat by, back to counting the distance between Hogwarts and London, those past beautifully high numbers shrinking to nothing. That stare did not dither or sting like a million needles, or even fog slightly as it bore witness to the calm before the storm, merely turning to stone from top to bottom, blinks few and far between. Contrary to the occasional, deplorable student riddled with homesickness and molding it into a true ailment, the young blonde had sprung at the opportunity to prolong her stay from home, that ingrained bottomless frown becoming not its opposite, but entirely neutral.

Departing from the busy train was just as monotonous as its ride had been, the voices of her peers melting into one singular sound, one that could be tuned into dusk in favor of silence and whatever hums nature itself would make. Throughout this day and a great portion of those that paved its way, a gentle hush had settled where it was desired, creating a soothing bubble of comfort around Persy, her portion of the world untouched by corrupted hands. What precisely corrupted them, delight. Ignorance was bliss and neither were affordable in this small realm, this shadowy corner designated for thought, for scheming. It was no vacation, this summer camp, but preparation. After all, its prideful, glowing sun was a quidditch match in the Slytherin held no interest.

Not only did that withheld malice for Hufflepuff in its entirety drain such an alluring event of any vibrancy, there were truly also better things to focus on. Escape, for one, even if it was conducted by means that previously would’ve sickened Persephone. Whatever those may be. Kindness, deceit, conformity, those social pillars of what made a human into a person. Sometimes a wretched but enticing thought came by, it rolled across her already overcome mind, what exactly did the opposite? What happened when someone was a person, but not human?

So, she trudged on, mind lodged elsewhere in these ploys and futile conspiracies, back turned infinitely to history and all the parts of the universe she was blind to. This brief time at summer camp, the tournament, whatever words suited such well-timed treachery best, it must be spent doing what mattered. Watching others, let alone sinful badgers, ripple through the air on their way to their better half, doing what Persy so badly craved, it wasn’t worth the way her eyes would drop after. It wasn’t worth the memories it would dig from their coffins where they clawed each time they were reborn. The adorable couple of Heads of Houses had explained other events and rules, of which were meticulously noted but otherwise disregarded. All she needed was time, time and a plan. And perhaps some kind of life, something to birth humanity, something to return to once the damage was inevitably done.

Media often speaks of serendipity, yet another unbelievable force meant to exist in an apathetic world. Never that, never credited to something so far beyond the reach of her gaze, but it had been foolish to trust existing in two dimensions at once wouldn’t bring its share of conflict. Regardless of the focus Persy appeared to have on the unfamiliar setting, she was seeing something other than the gushing crowd, feeling something other than the shoulders she brushed past so carelessly. Maybe the girl’s eyes had rolled backwards to look at the old film reeling in her own head, and she truly didn’t see the boy she walked straight into, as though he were completely invisible.

Invisible people rarely gifted such a startle though.

Later, she’d surely credit her minor outburst to the stress, the burdens she was bearing. It was far too much for such a young child to endure with a grin plastered on their lips like the world’s worst painting. “Can you watch where the fuck you’re going?” Hypocritical, yes, but Persy had stumbled backwards enough to bump into someone else. Their words of complaint were loud, but fused in harmony with the assorted buzz of everyone else, though not enough to suppress the gazes darting from all directions. Drawing attention was the last thing that needed to be done, as eyes were just futile things to burn into your flesh, restraints held tightly from a distance. “Did you leave your manners with your glasses?”
