Clever Friend
His dad had been sleepy and unaware of Rohan's needs the whole day. He bought his books, and after that chose a nice cozy bench to sit on and relax while Rohan bought the other supplies. He had met one girl he liked that day. Elisabeth. He hoped he would see her again. When Rohan had bought all his supplies, he looked for his father, and found him eventually, near Quality Quidditch Supplies. Rohan got excited by this, he hoped that his father would maybe buy him a broom or a Quaffle or anything. Just some Quidditch stuff. He hadn't gotten anything special for his birthday yet (only his letter to Hogwarts and some Bertie Bott's Every flavour Beans). His dad stood up and walked away. Rohan got used to this habit of his father and followed him.
After a little walk they reached a shop called the Magical Menagerie. Rohan wondered what they sold for a second, but when he looked he saw dozens of animals in the shop window. His dad wasn't going to buy him Quidditch related things, but a pet? At first he felt a little disappointed, but after overthinking his options he realized this maybe was even better.
"Here, have a few galleons," his father told him. He handed him the golden coins. "Buy any pet you want, I'll wait right here." No 'Happy Birthday' or anything. Just some coins. Anyway, Rohan was content and entered the shop, feeling a tiny bit nervous.
When he entered the shop, a little bell rang. He was greeted by a white haired lady. She wasn't very tall, in fact, Rohan was about a head taller then she was. "Hello my dear, can I help you?" Rohan was a little shocked by how many animals there were. He had never seen so many in one shop. "Ehm... Yes please. I'd like to view your available pets." Rohan was thinking about what animal he wanted. An owl maybe? That could be useful. He wanted an animal he could train, tricks or anything that was enjoyable. It had to be a clever pet. Not a dull one that just sleeps all day, laying around, not even aware of their existence. He couldn't really train an owl, he supposed.
While the friendly woman wrote something down, Rohan walked towards the desk. "Do you have any clever pets? I'd like to be able to train him tricks. Nothing too expensive, please.." The woman didn't have to think about it very long. "Oh yes honey, I do. Is a rat what you're looking for? They are among the smartest animals I sell here. It's not hard to train them things." A rat? Rohan thought about that for a second. A rat seemed okay. They aren't too big to cary, and not scary either. "Actually, that would be perfect. Where are the rats I can choose from?" The lady pointed at a few cages left in the store. Rohan walked there and watched the different rats play for a while. One of them seemed cleverer then the others, protecting the food and making sure he had a good spot. He looked at the little sign underneath it. "Common Rat". "I'd like that one there, please. The one with the white collar." The lady walked to the cage, opened it and picked up the large animal. She walked to the desk again and put it in a smaller cage. "This is one of the male rats. He is indeed a very clever rat. Good choice! The lady smiled. She shove the cage towards Rohan. "That would be.. 5 galleons. Take great care of him, please. Feed him at least twice a day. But, I'm sure you can do that, honey." Rohan gave her 5 of the golden coins and smiled friendly. "Thank you very much!" Rohan walked out of the shop, and the bell rang once more.
Rohan hadn't thought of a name yet. He sat down next to his father and thought about it for a bit. He thought about some mythical names, Norse mostly, and suddenly it got to him. He would call his new rat Heimdall, after the watchman of the Norse gods. He felt a warm glow inside him when he saw his new friend play in its cage. He was so cute! Rohan had never really found something cute. But this little guy was the cutest animal ever.
