Many were leaving the Great Hall, stuffed after another large supper. They would go off to their Common Rooms or out on the Grounds to play around, maybe socialize or fit in a game of catch or tag. Alina decided that evening she would check out the castle according to her map that she desperately tried to create last year. The problem with making a map of Hogwarts was that it was always changing - as if it almost had a mind itself or was evolving. She loved it. It intrigued her. It would change every time she would attempt to memorialize it and she could only imagine what changes might have occurred after an entire Summer away.

So she took the long parchment out of her bag and unrolled a bit of the scroll as she climbed the stairs of one of the unmoving staircases and she began to find her place. She had thought of Hogwarts often in her time away but she hadn't looked at the map in months. It seemed longer.

Once up the stairs she turned and began east down the corridor, her small index finger tracing her whereabouts and finding her location. Here it was. She continued down, looking at what was written so she knew what she expected to be next when she bumped hard against something. She looked up quickly and saw a boy. "Oh, I'm SO sorry!" she quickly apologized without a bit of hesitation. "Are you alright?" Of course he was alright. He was much taller than she was and larger in built. Still, it wasn't like her to be so unobservant of her surroundings.

After leaving the Great Hall, as usual, thoughts raced through my mind. I started to think about classes and the school in general. I didn't even realize that I was wandering the school, trying to take it all in. When I'm thinking, I'm in their deep, I literally turn off my observance and my subconscious just works. Unlike most, I actually like danger, excitement, and noise, but when I'm thinking I go into autopilot and my train of thought rides till it crashes.
I was walking down the corridor at a slow and steady pace, occasionally stopping to check out the other places as I pass them. I was still walking down the corridor but then I took a turn and hit something really hard. I stumbled back and held the wall to keep me from hitting the ground. When I brought my head up, I realized I ran into a girl.
"Oh I'm so sorry" the girl said.
"She seems nice" I thought but realized that I was staring for a long time, so I straightened my posture and introduced myself.
"Hey, I'm Aemadall"
I paused and realized my scandanaivian name was rather hard to pronounce.
"Wait, scrap that, just call me Logan, it's way easier"
I just stood there, looking at her. Making friends was never my strong suit, I always thought keeping them easier. "Wow, did I just introduce myself?" I thought.

She smiled, glad he wasn't upset with her. She had run into Slytherins before who weren't so happy about being collided with and she had run into Ravenclaws that didn't like her for interrupting their study sessions and blamed her for low OWL scores. She was glad this boy was easy going enough.

"Alina. Alina Rosier,"
she said with the slight curtsy she did when introducing herself. She then tilted her head as she thought about what he had just said. "Do you prefer to be called Logan? If not, I can attempt the other." It was a name she had never heard before and she couldn't quite place its origin either. But then again, she wasn't well traveled. She had been born in France and lived there until the age of seven when they moved to England.

"Don't get me wrong...Logan is a nice name. A great name! Fantastic,"
she smiled, hoping she wasn't stumbling over her words here. She didn't want him to think she was insulting him because that was the last thing she would be doing. He had just said it, but even then she wasn't sure she could repeat it. Still, if he preferred to go by that name she was willing to learn it if he wanted to teach it to her.

"And congratulations on Gryffindor! I hear it's a wonderful house to be in." She figured he was a first year but then again, as she scanned him once more, maybe he was a third year due to his height. She knew most of the second years, even if just a name to face, so she didn't think to place him with her year.

I watched as the girl introduced herself.
"Alina. Alina Rosier" the girl said.
"Alina, that's a nice name", I thought.
I raised an eyebrow when she curtsied. I also observed her tone. She seemed a bit relieved that I wasn't upset with her.
I watched her try to attempt my scandanaivian name and grinned a bit.
She congratulated me on getting into Gryffindor which really bugged me. "Why the heck does everyone expect me to be in Gryffindor" My grin disappeared quickly.
"Hufflepuff, not bad. At least you seem to enjoy it"
I decided I was just gonna let this Gryffindor thing go and focus on my classes and magic.
Hey, sorry for hitting you back there.
I scanned her and realized she was a bit smaller than me and I could have hurt her, but it didn't bother me much to mention that, so I just let it slide.
I smiled at her and tried to figure out what she was doing before I hit her. I looked down and saw a scroll in her hand. My curious got the best of me.
What's that in your hand?
I pointed to her hand. Apparently, she was trying to write or draw something on the paper and bumped into me.

At least she seemed to enjoy it. She wondered if that 1) meant that he didn't enjoy being sorted into Gryffindor. If that were the case, she could completely understand. She spent a good first half of her first year agonizing over being sorted into Hufflepuff rather than Slytherin like the rest of her family and took time and experience to realize it was the right place for her. Or maybe it meant 2) an insult. At least she seemed to enjoy it. It. Hufflepuff. Was it a stab at the house as if who in their right mind would enjoy it? She had experienced that before.

Plus sometimes upon a first meeting someone read her perkiness for annoying, her happiness for a lack of intelligence. She might not have been the brightest when it came to classes, but she had managed to pull up to decent grades.

She decided to bypass it. Maybe she was reading far too much into the statement. She looked down to her hand since he had most recently asked what she had. "Oh, this is a....never ending...possibly impossible task. I've been trying to make a map of the castle since last year," she said as she opened it a little to show him some of her sketching. "I see why they don't give first years a map though. It's as if the castle is always changing, evolving. I'll go one place and map something out and the next time I'm there, it'll be different."

"I hope that doesn't make me seem too tragically odd."

I continue to stare at the paper in her hand. Apparently, it was a map that the girl was trying to draw by herself. It would seem she was trying to update a map which was a bit weird for me. I tend to snap while doing voluntary but tedious tasks that required focus and patience, of which I don't have much of.
According to her, the castle seemed to change on its own. It was like someone trying to draw a picture of a child and got a boy with ADHD as his model. It seemed rather sad.
"No, it doesn't seem that odd"
This matter took me back to Olympian Mythology. I decided I had to show her that I wasn't an empty vessel. Mythology was actually one of the only things I actually enjoyed reading. Which was strange cuz I never really enjoyed reading in the first place.
"Huh. Its kinda like the Labyrinth. Daeladus built it, but Pasiphae's magic held it strong and made it grow on its own"
I looked back up and tried to think about what the bad part was.
"It was designed to navigate the world. You could go in from China and pop up in Singapore two minutes later. Time and direction has no meaning there"
I was starting to gather all I know about it.
"It could create your worst nightmares. People go in and never return or they just go bat poop crazy in there and die"
I said with a smile. This seemed rather dark. Talking about a hellscape and smiling. I almost forgot what we were talking about.
"Hope the same doesn't happen to me"

"I hope that doesn't happen to me either,"
she said with a laugh. Going in and never returning, going mental and dying. I've got too much time left!"

She smiled to him and thought about what he said though. "I like you, Logan. You're an interesting guy." All that Olympian Mythology and all. She hadn't read up on the subject but it did seem fascinating and she could understand why it appealed to him, with just what little he said to her.

"So, where is it you're originally from?"
she asked. Assuming from his accent she would say Scotland but it was never good to jump to conclusions. Like her, for instance. Some might think her home was in France because of her French accent. It was where she was from, but no longer where she lived.

She tucked her map into her bag, wanting devote her attention to the boy rather than her endeavor to graph out the school and she pulled a lemon drop from a small plastic baggie before holding it out to him. They were her favorite but she always was willing to share and they were something she never was without. Her philosophy was that lemon drops made almost anything better.

"I hope that doesn't happen to me either" Alina said, laughing
"I like you, Logan. You're an interesting guy" she said with a smile.
"What a girl actually likes me!?" I thought with surprise. Usually when I'm in an accidental conversation with a girl, I tend to creep them out for some reason and they end up running away.
I also understood that she liked mythology the way I did.
"So far, so good" I thought
"Well, you ain't so bad yourself. Working on that map requires patience, of which I have none."
I said with a smirk on my face. I finally realized that Alina had asked me a question.
"Grew up in Edinburgh. My Scottish accent isn't heavy cuz I went to a school with every race and culture"
I looked back down at the map that the girl was drawing. Apparently, she decided to tuck it away and focus on me. Immediately, she pulled out a little bag and brought something out something that I presume was candy. She gave me the bag which startled me a bit. I've never gotten anything from a girl before. Not even a slap in the face. If it was from this girl, I was willing to try it. I looking in the bag and found that they were all lemon drops.
"You always carry lemon drops around?"
I said, raising an eyebrow. I took out one lemon drop and popped it into my mouth.

"I do, they're my favorite. It's my general philosophy that almost everything is better with lemon drops. Even new friends," she smiled to him.

"So tell me about being sorted into Gryffindor. Is that a house you wanted? Did you have any family members that have gone to Hogwarts? Are your parents wizards? Do you have any siblings?"

Oookay, maybe too many questions at once. She stopped talking and gave him a smile in a silent apology. "Sorry, coming on too strong, huh?" she smiled and hooked her arm with his. "I'm a people person. I like getting to know new people," and that was one of the best things about a new year at school. It brought about a whole entire new group of potential friends like Logan here.

She hoped she wasn't annoying the boy. She just wanted to get to know more about him so she could see if they had any shared interests or connections between them. She was glad that he took the lemon drop, that was a good point toward his character. She would never understand it fully herself, but there were some people in the world that turned down a lemon drop. There were some people that just didn't like them.

According to her, her general philosophy was that lemon drops made everything better. Maybe she was right, as I took it I started feeling happier. My anxiety was slowly dissolving.
Everything was going great, until she started firing at a torrent of questions at me about my house, family and my siblings. When I was about to answer one, a new one would come out.
The girl apologized which was really unnecessary. She hooked her arm with mine which was weird cuz girls never ever engage in voluntary physical contact with me unless they were trying to hurt or rob me. She explained she was a people person.
"I wish I had your problems. I seem get a friend and the next moment, they're gone"
I remembered Travis and Leo and thought what was gonna happened to them.
I remembered the question she asked me and decided to at least tell her a bit about myself more than just my name.
"I actually expected to be in any other house because I wasn't daring or brave at all"
"Every one but my dad went to Hogwarts. He was a Russian muggle. The name was my mom's idea"
I also remember my siblings Aila and Malcolm
"I actually have 2 siblings. They both went and graduated way before I got here"
I smiled at her. "I can't believe my first friend here is a girl" It definitely defied all odds.
"What about you. Got anything I should know about your family?"
