Onwards Toward New Horizons
Aoife continued waving as the train pulled from the station until she could no longer see her parents waving back. It was strange being away from them very strange. As she shut the window and drew the curtain that hung above it to block out the sun she sat down in one of the seats lining the compartment unslinging the faded messenger bag she had carried onto the train and placing it beneath her seat. She recalled the funny stories her brother Liam had told her of his own first-year when he'd needed to rush to borrow robes from an upperclassman because he'd forgotten his own inside of his trunk. The memory managed to draw a few soft giggles from the 11-year-old.
The laughter was short though as she looked around the empty compartment. She could hear other students talking and laughing out in the corridor and in the compartments surrounding her own. And it wasn't long before she felt a sense of loneliness begin to set in as she simply sat there. Part of her wished her siblings would join her but she knew that they had their own lives at school. Her eyes fell as she let out a low sigh leaning over to pull out her messenger bag once more. After a few moments of rooting through its contents, she pulled out something a long plastic item with a screen with a blue and red piece on either side. And for a few moments, the little device entertained her, kept her mind off of the emptiness of the compartment she sat in. Or at least it would have if the screen hadn't stared back at her blankly as she tried to switch on the power.
Although that only lasted for so long the constant hum of conversation throughout the train had faded as students settled in with friends. The excitement of a new school year wears off leaving only the sound of the train rattling upon the tracks to be heard. With a soft sigh, Aoife sighed and shoved her game shoved it into her bag and sat back against her seat with a huff as she crossed her arms. She glanced toward the door of the compartment every so often she would see a shadow or two as students passed by and she couldn't help but hold onto the hope that maybe someone might step through. Another sigh passed her lips as she watched another group pass by though this one was brought upon more by irritation rather than melancholy.
If she wanted to meet people shouldn't she be out there? Why was she sitting here hoping someone would come walking in? Why was it so easy to recognize this but so very hard to do anything about it?
That last question seemed to weigh on Aoife for a moment as her hands rested on the seats beside her ready to push herself out of her seat. But as if a pair of hands were pushing down upon her shoulders keeping her where she sat she remained. Finally with one last sigh this one of resignation she sat back closing her eyes. "Wha' a way tae begin yer first year Aoife..." She mumbled to herself. "Climb a tree? Sure tha's fine...Try tae creep 'bout knockturn alley? Why not?" She crossed her arms. "But talkin' tae people...Tha's where we cross the line? Bloody brilliant..." She murmured to herself.

I step onto the train anxiously, feeling odd in my normal clothes that looked rather pain and out of place amongst all the robes and poonted hats but I tried not to stress too much about it I really needed to get over being so anxious. As I walk around the train I consider talking to some people but back out at the last minute making up a number of excuses not too.
I know I'm far from the only muggleborn student but I'm still worrying anout being completly confused about everything. Everyone else will be dissusing some famous wizard or talking about a spell or a game and I'll just be sitting in the corner completly lost.
I slip through the rest of the croweded train trying to draw as little attention to myself as possible. I try to find an open compartment but most seem already full with students who already know each other and don't need me interrupting, I check a few more compartments but still can't find anywhere to sit, getting desperate I look into another room. This one isn't full in fact its practically empty except for one very small girl. She was on the shorter side, with pretty long reddish hair that fell down her shoulders in curls. She had paler skin and was very thin which made me, slightly overweight as I was seem even bigger. I consider looking some more for an empty compartment but most of them are full and I need to be more confident, come on its not that hard I tell myself. Just ask her if you can here.
"Hi, um, could I sit here?"

SAPPHIRE HAD ALWAYS HATED THE TRAIN RIDES TO A NEW SCHOOL YEAR. For one, she was immensely antisocial. For another, her first trip on the train... well, that hadn't been very fun. She'd still been living with the Grace's at that time, and she'd felt extremely lonely from start to finish. No one had decided to sit in her compartment. And while her second trip was better, she still felt a sort of heavy weight against her shoulders. This year, she determined, would be better. And at least, now, she had her cat.
Melanie was currently curled up on the pale-haired girl's shoulder, tail curling over her shoulders. She'd only gotten the cat that summer, but she loved her.
She tugged at the hem of her jacket, dark grey fabric shifting underneath the lighter grey fur of her cat. The creature made a noise of annoyance, to which she spoke, "Sorry about that." The feline seemed to understand, then plopped herself in the girl's hood. This elicited a laugh from her, especially when the cat purred.
She shifted her grip on her suitcase, which she favoured over trunks for their better mobility and also varying sizes. She tended to pack lightly, and besides that, she compacted her actual school supplies well. At the moment, her main problem was finding a compartment. She'd opted not to go with Koko, since her sister seemed to hang out with people quite different from her, and also because she wanted to branch out.
Upon hearing muttering within a nearby compartment, Sapph paused. She identified a thick accent in the person's words, which intrigued her. She heard all kinds of accents at Hogwarts, but rarely ever found herself able to talk to a person with such an accent. And based off the little snippets of what the other person had said, this person was similar to the pale-haired girl.
She followed the mutterings to their source, a small compartment which, seemingly, only contained two people (as of a few moments before). She contemplated going in for a second before Melanie made the choice for her. The blue eyes of her cat shot open, and the creature darted over to the compartment, padding in.
For a second, Sapphire was stunned. That thing is like me without impulse control, she thought. Then she exhaled tiredly and pushed the door open the rest of the way before entering. Inside, she felt like a deer in headlights, but pushed herself past it. "Ehm, may I sit here?" she asked, motioning to an empty seat. If she were allowed, she would introduce herself as Sapphire Riddle. However, her still limited social skills would cause that to be difficult, and she would probably end up stumbling over her own name. An awkward smile made its way onto her face. If worst comes to worst, at least I tried.

A few minutes had passed since Aoife had resigned herself to being alone for the duration of her first trip to Hogwarts. It wasn't the best feeling but she tried to reassure herself that she'd have plenty of time to make new friends when she got there. So she'd filled the time messing with the muggle gaming device she'd been toying with earlier her brows furrowed as her fingers tapped the buttons still somewhat trying to understand parts of the game. Her focus was so intensely engrossed in it that she found herself completely taken off guard as she heard the door to her compartment click and slide open revealing a girl with brown hair longer than her own and vibrant light green eyes.
So shocked was she by the sudden appearance left her speechless for a moment the only sound between the two young first-years being the generic video game music coming from her device or at least it would have been if the device worked properly. She'd definitely have to figure out what was wrong with it later. Finally, she snapped out of her stupor and managed to piece together some words into a sentence. "S-Sure! Go righ' on ahead." She said nodding and working up a smile. She could feel a certain measure of excitement mixed with nerves as she gestured for the girl to take up any seat that she liked. "I'm Aoife! Aoife Lovett pleasure tae meet ye!" She said with energy that certainly didn't seem to suit the child who'd been too afraid to go out and meet new people.
It wouldn't be long before another guest would appear in the door although this one was far different from her last in the form of a cat with beautiful light grey fur and intelligent-looking blue eyes. It was in that moment that her hands shot up to her mouth a soft gasp escaping her. Her eyes grew wide as she took in the cat's appearance her game now lay upon her lap forgotten. She'd always wanted a pet but all her life she'd been told by her parents that owning one was a large responsibility. Neither of her siblings owned any mainly because they didn't feel like taking care of one. So needless to say Aoife was somewhat excited to see this adorable feline come padding through the door.
"Oh lookit you~ Aren't ye just the cutest li'l thin' I've ever seen!" She cooed leaning close to admire the cat closer but not enough to spook the feline. It wasn't long before the little cat's owner came through as well appearing at the door. Her eyes rose as she straightened in her seat.
"Well look at tha' I guess dreams do come true!"She thought as she seemed to be meeting a significant number of people in such a short time.
The girl at the door was pretty with stark white hair akin to snow that seemed to hang down just above her shoulders. The girl seemed almost angelic in a way and before Aoife could realize that she'd just been staring for the past 30 seconds the girl spoke asking if she could take one of the seats here. Aoife snapped out of her awestruck state and hastily nodded. "S-Sure!" She said gesturing toward one of the seats.

ReducioY'all can god-mod Melanie's actions. I don't really mind. I also have very little experience rp-ing with her, since I recently got her, so I don't have a set personality.SAPPHIRE COULDN'T HELP BUT LAUGH LIGHTLY AT THE REDHEADED GIRL'S REACTION. She took her seat, taking it upon herself to introduce herself. "I'm Sapph. Sapphire Riddle." She used her nickname first instead of her real name, hoping to indicate that she preferred to be called that. It was a fairly new name, but she liked it. "You can pet her if you'd like, though she doesn't like it when people touch her face. She'll most likely try to claw your hand if you do."
Her words were directed to both girls in the compartment, both who seemed younger than her. She stuffed her hands in her pockets, crossing her legs as she leaned back against the back of the compartment. She noticed the object that the redhead possessed, recognizing it vaguely. It was a Nintendo Switch, a muggle device which had been used on numerous occasions by her previous adoptive siblings.
The other girl had seemed to drop it when she encountered Melanie, seemingly entranced by the creature. She wondered vaguely what she had been playing, but thought it would be mildly rude to ask. Instead, she cast her gaze over the two girls. The one with the accent, the original inhabitant of the car, had shoulder length curls of red hair and was quite pale. She reminded Sapphire of both Margaret and River, two Ravenclaw girls she'd encountered in previous years, the only difference being shorter hair than the other two. She found that quite ironic.
The other girl had longer brown hair and light green eyes, reminding Sapphire vaguely of oak leaves in early spring. She felt a little awkward, since she was probably a year or 2 older than them both, but she tried to push it aside.
She had heard the redhead introduce herself as Aoife before she'd come in, but she didn't know the name of the brunette. She was curious. She wanted to get to know more people. She didn't really know any way else to do it. "Er... I overheard Aoife introduce herself, but I don't think I heard your name," she addressed the brunette. She offered a slight smile.

After asking if I could sit there the redhead stared at me wide-eyed I began to grow a bit uncomfortable wondering if I had done something. I noticed as she sat that she was doing a device she seemed to be playing video games on. I wondered if she was muggle-born or if wizards used the same sort of technology as muggles. Right, when I was about to apologize and ask if she wanted me to leave she seemed to snap to life "S-Sure! Go righ' on ahead." She said enthusiastically while nodding like a bobblehead and grinning up at me.
I nervously returned her grin happy to have a place to sit. She gestured at the seats letting me pick which one I wanted. I smile and take the seat across from her setting down my suitcase on the floor and nervously began messing with my jacket. Thankfully I didn´t have to start the conversation because the girl piped up saying "I'm Aoife! Aoife Lovett pleasure tea meet ye!" she spoke quickly and energetically, I wondered if she was always like this?
I introduced myself and before I could even get comfortable in my seat a pretty gray cat came strutting into the room. I smiled and laughed a little at the sweet looking kitten, she had beautiful blue eyes that looked inquisitively at both of us. Aoife looked liked she was enjoying our new companion even more than me, she let out a gasp and immediately started cooing over the who by her rubbing against Aoife´s leg and smiling happily seemed to enjoy it
A girl hurried in right after the cat so I assumed she must be the owner of the furry feline. I smiled at her as she walked into the room she was pretty with hair more white than blonde that fell just above her shoulders. She was taller than me and paler. She asked as she came inside if she could sit her. I glanced over at Aoife expecting her to answer but she was just at the girl as if she had been hypnotized, as the question hung awkwardly in the air Aoife finally stuttered out ¨S-Sure!" She said gesturing toward one of the seats.
¨I´m Sapph. Sapphire Riddle." She said. It was a pretty name and seemed to suit her. ¨You can pet her if you´d like, though she doesn't like it when. people touch her face. She´ll most likely try to claw your hand if you do.¨
I immediately took her up on that leaning down and gently patting the cats back making sure to stay away from her face.
¨I overhead Aoife introduce herself, but I don´t think I heard your name.¨ She said to me.
I went red realizing how rude I was being, ¨Oh, yeah sorry, I´m Violet.¨ I said, ¨Violet Tyler.¨ I added not sure if I was supposed to or not. Why wasn´t there an instrument manual for talking to people? I smile at her unsure of what to say next.

SO THE BRUNETTE'S NAME WAS VIOLET. She would have to remember that. Not that there were many names she had to remember in the first place, but still.
The pale-haired girl contemplated pulling out her phone so that she could listen to music, but then remembered that technology didn't work when involved with magic. She decided against it, instead opting to draw out a book. With that, she could at least pay attention to both conversation and the other object of focus. She couldn't do the same with music, since both involved her ears and she was worse at that.
The Toll, was what the cover read in metallic, angular, dark purple block letters. The final book in a sort of dystopian/futuristic trilogy. She had crammed in the reading of the first two books over the summer, between the multitude of other literary focuses, plus stories she'd been writing, and going through 2 sketchbooks. She would've gotten it done before coming to Hogwarts, but she'd been... a bit distracted.
She was glad that the other girls were at least able to get along with her cat, though it wasn't yet apparent whether they would get along with her. Not that she was particularly hard to get along with, she was just... well, it was hard for her to speak. To other people. If humans were around, it seemed like her tongue was stuck. At least, when a conversation was started.
While she began reading from where she was about halfway through the book, she threw out an offhanded question. "If you don't mind me asking, Aoife, what were you playing? I noticed you have a switch, which I assume you were using before you were distracted," Or at least before the tech got shut off, she said and thought, not looking up from her book.

Aoife's cheeks flushed a bit as she heard the angelic girl's laughter at her behavior. She wasn't sure which the girl found amusing if it was her reaction to the cat, or Aoife's reaction to the girl herself. Luckily Aoife wasn't one to dwell upon things too long as the older girl introduced herself she found herself smiling. "Pleasure tae be meetin' ya Sapph!" She said her smile bright and welcoming. One could hardly believe this was the same girl who'd been moping about alone just minutes ago.
Upon being given permission to pet the cat it wasn't long before Aoife had slid from her seat to kneel before the grey feline. "Awww aren't you the prettiest li'l kitty I've ever seen~" She said as she stroked her hand over the cat's soft fur from the base of her neck and down her back. It took all her willpower to resist scooping the cat into her arms and giving it a hug. That and the lingering knowledge that the cat and her owner might not appreciate her doing that. For a few moments, the cat seemed to monopolize her attention until she heard Sapph speak up asking her what game she'd been playing on her Switch.
"Oh!" She shifted so that her back rested against the seats and scooped up her switch once more turning it around in her hands to face Sapph whilst leaving her lap open if Melanie decided she wanted to rest upon it. The fact that the older girl hadn't looked up from her book didn't seem to bother the Scottish girl all that much as she dived into talking about the game. "Its called Fire Emblem: Three Houses. It's this big RPG strategy game. My brother originally bought it fer 'imself but he's absolute rubbish a' it." She said with a big grin as she spun the console back around in her hands.
"So he went along an' let me 'ave it instead." She said as she tapped a few buttons triggering another encounter in game. She let her eyes drift back toward Sapph taking note of the book she was reading. She looked at the title and printed on the cover and cocked her head. Something seemed vaguely familiar about it and a few moments later the realization struck her. She'd seen her sister reading this series it had been a short obsession of hers and she could remember before her older sister had gotten more obsessed with boyfriends how she'd always insist that Aoife would enjoy the book.
"Is tha' series any good? Mah sister always spoke well of it. But I never got 'round tae reading it."

SAPPHIRE WAS INTRIGUED BY AOIFE'S DESCRIPTION OF THE GAME. It seemed like something that she would play. If she were a cat, her ears would be perked in curiosity and interest. "That seems like an interesting game," she said, eyes ever so slightly brighter than before as her gaze flitted towards the other girl for a second.
She went back to her book, though she was only half paying attention to the words on the pages. The fluffy grey creature which followed the pale-haired girl around leapt up onto Aoife's leg, folding her limbs underneath her body. Meanwhile, Sapphire couldn't help but laugh at the... slightly gory bit, however twisted it may have seemed to another person.
And then she was surprised by the fact that Aoife knew the series, even if she'd never read it. She nodded, shock well masked. "I consider it pretty good. I'm not really one for romance, whether it be a subplot or the general plot, but the story is - excuse my cursing - pretty damn good, in my opinion." She smiled sheepishly. Not that she would admit it, but she did also like the romantic subplots in the book more than she did other ones. "It's different from anything else I've read."
She continued on with her reading, determined to take out a decent chunk of it. Even though she probably wouldn't, as was usually the case when other people (people whom she felt alright talking too) were around.

I watched slightly jealous as the cute gray kitten climbed into Aoife lap. Maybe I should get a cat as a pet. I´ve always loved them but I´ve never had one as a pet. I wonder if I could convince my parents to let me get one? I zone out a bit as I daydream about a cute white puffball of a cat snuggled up against me. I snap back into reality when I hear Aoife and Sapphire talking. I listen as they talk about the book Sapph is reading, though I do read a lot I had never read that book in particular and felt a bit disappointed that I didn´t have much to add to the conversation. I considered just staying quiet and maybe pulling out a book of my own but I was going to be braver and more outgoing this year, at least that's what I told myself. I had noticed that Sapph looked older than me and Aoife by at least a year or two so wanting to continue the conversation and out of curiosity for what knowledge the older girl might have about Hogwarts. Also well m magic in general but I was very new to all of this I decided to ask, ¨What year are you guys in? I´m a first-year myself." I say with a smile trying not to come off as if I was interrogating them or too odd.
