The Joke Shop
After visiting Flourish and Blotts to buy all the books Allie would need for her first year, Allie's father brought her into Weasley's Wizard Wheezes, the joke shop of Diagon Alley. Turning to her father outside the building, Allie raised an eyebrow. "Why are we here?" she asked him suspiciously. Her father just gave her a grin and opened the door, not saying anything until they walked inside.
"I think you need to have a little fun in your life," was his reply. Allie hadn't been inside very many of the shops at Diagon Alley, and this was one she had never visited. It always seemed a little to loud and. . . well, crazy inside. This was all proven to be true when she looked around for the first time.
The interior of the joke shop was bright and bursting with colors. There were tons of people milling around inside, and Allie almost gasped. They seemed to have. . . well, everything. There were shelves upon shelves of potions, other items designed to complete many pranks, and so much more. Clusters of children surrounded each shelf, gasping and gazing in awe at everything there. Allie looked up at her father, who was smiling down at her. She smiled back.
Walking farther into the shop, Allie saw Love Potions, Fanged Frisbees, even Extendable Ears! This wasn't a place she'd have thought she would enjoy, and yet. . . She hurried over to one shelf that held something interesting. There was only one other person there.

The Joke Shop
[quote][quote]
Life with Aunt Lesley had been practically unbearable since Crissy’s letter from Hogwarts came. Her aunt typically left Crissy alone to her own devices. But ever since they learned that Crissy was a witch, Aunt Lesley always found a reason to degrade or belittle Crissy. She was constantly pointing out any behavior she deemed incorrect. Crissy could simply be doing the dishes like she normally did, and Aunt Lesley would note how wrong she was doing them. Crissy could not stand being in the same room as her.
Luckily, she had received a list of school supplies she needed to purchase for the upcoming school year. There were instructions that informed her she could get these items in a placed called Diagon Alley in London. There was no way that Aunt Lesley would help her make that journey. After some much serious planning she finally had it down how she would make the journey. Years of saving up money she had enough to get her there and hopefully pay for her supplies. Crissy’s parents had left her behind a fair savings account. But she was only allowed to access it under her Aunt’s supervision until her eighteenth birthday. After some coaxing she was aloud to withdraw an amount that would hopefully cover anything else she might need.
One morning she packed up her backpack and hitched a ride into town from a neighbor. From there she caught a train. After what seemed like forever, she finally made it outside a strange looking pub called the Leaky Cauldron. Once inside she was able to get instructions on how to enter Diagon Alley. Crissy was still new to all this magical stuff. When she stepped across the threshold and into Diagon Alley, she was absolutely blown away. All the sights, sounds, smells even were new and exciting. Her eyes dashed around looking for the first place she should go.
Eyes settling on the most brightly painted building, Crissy clutched her list tightly in her hands, adjusted her backpack strap and bounded off in the direction of Weasley's Wizard Wheezes. The inside of the store buzzed with children. Everywhere she looked, she saw something she did not recognize. Her mind rushed with questions. Her whole body was on sensory overload. Crissy felt quite exposed standing in the middle of all of this. She was obviously out of place. While the other children cheerfully rushed from glass case to case, jumping about with excitement about their purchases, Crissy awkwardly trudged forward through the store. Painfully aware of her awkwardness, Crissy stood in front of a large shelf trying to grasp what she was even starring at.
Crissy could feel the girl’s presence before she could make out her shape in her peripheral vision. She tensed automatically without realizing it. Taking a calming breathe she told herself that it was fine. This was someone new, not a local from her town. This girl would hopefully not comment on the raggedy backpack slumped over her shoulder. Or the holes in her jeans, and her scuffed up converse. Shaking the thoughts from her head Crissy smoothed her sweaty palms on her pants leg. Cocking her head to the side, she turned towards the girl.
Looking her over it appeared that they might be around the same age. Crissy needed to make friends, or at least acquaintances. Trying to put on her most friendly smile, Crissy cleared her throat. “Hi, do you go to Hogwarts as well?”

The Joke Shop
The girl on one side of her looked a little nervous, Allie noticed. She gave the girl a warm smile. The other girl seemed about Allie's age and was probably another person getting her supplies for Hogwarts. Looking away from the girl and back at the shelf, Allie had to turn around again as she heard a throat being cleared and a voice asking, "Hi, do you go to Hogwarts as well?" The girl beside her was giving Allie a small, slightly uncertain smile as she asked this.
"Oh, well, not yet, technically. . ." Allie responded, then bit her lip a little. Trailing off, she reached for a strand of her hair to play with, her nervous habit. Glancing around the store, Allie wondered where her father was and then realized she hadn't even introduced herself. "I'm Allie, by the way." she told the girl. "And I will be going to Hogwarts once the school year starts." Her chocolate colored eyes lit up and her smile grew wider. "I just can't believe I'm finally going! I've been wanting to go since I was a little kid." She blushed slightly, her cheeks turning a light pink. "Sorry, I'm just excited." Allie said to the other girl.
Allie looked around the crowded store again, noticing that there were more than a dozen girls hovering around the Love Potion area. She had to stifle a laugh. Who knew there were so many people that wanted one of those! They had to know that Love Potions wore off eventually, right? And they didn't even create real love. . . She shook her head and turned back to the girl next to her.

The Joke Shop
Crissy’s eyes scanned the shelves in front of her. She timidly picked up an object, setting it back down absentmindedly. Facing the girl, she listened to her excitedly speak about Hogwarts. She felt another nagging pang of insecurity. Was Crissy the only person who hadn’t been aware of this place before receiving her letter? “I’m Crissy, but everyone back home calls me Cris.” Crissy returned the warm smile. The girl smiling back at her appeared to be around the same age, and her smile was friendly enough.
Surely there were other children like her. Children that up until a few months ago had absolutely no idea about magic or Hogwarts. Crissy turned away from the shelf in front of her, angled towards Allie, but eyes dancing from the girl’s face to the other kids in the shop. Crissy looked about to see if anyone else looked just as out of place as she felt. From where she stood though it did not appear that way. Sighing inwardly, she looked back at her new fellow classmate. Perhaps when they started the school year, she would find someone else to share in her confused excitement.
On the other hand, it would be nice to make a friend that could explain some of this magic stuff to her. She felt like a fish out of water standing in this peculiar shop, not sure what she should even purchase. “I’ll be starting there too. This is my first year as well. So, you knew about this place before?” Crissy asked the question hesitantly. She was unsure how the other girl would react to this. “I’m new to all this I guess you could say. I had no idea I was a witch until I received my letter.” Crissy chewed on the inside of her cheek, taking another longing glance around the room.

The Joke Shop
Allie saw a hint of something cross the girl's face but she couldn't place what it was. . . the girl looked a little worried, was that it? Allie realized she had been staring off into space for some time now, thinking. Hurriedly looking back at the girl in front of her, she heard the other soon to be first year introduce herself. "Hi Crissy. . . can I call you Cris?" Allie asked. She just wanted to be sure - she didn't know if that was a nickname the girl wanted to be only for her family or not. Probably not, Allie decided, since she had told her what it was, but still. It was always good to be sure.
Her mind swirling with thoughts again, Allie tried to push them away so she could actually talk to Crissy instead of thinking the whole time like she had been doing. "Sorry," she apologized, her smile turning a little embarrassed. Allie knew she apologized too much, but it was a habit she couldn't break. She didn't want to seem rude to others.
When Crissy asked if Allie had known about the shop (and most likely the rest of Diagon Alley as well) before hand, the dark haired girl nodded. "Both my parents are wizards and were born magical, but there were a few muggles in our family tree, so we're not pure bloods." Noting that the other girl might not understand the term, Allie explained further. "Those are families that don't have a single drop of Muggle blood in their veins, and therefore have 'pure blood.'" She shrugged slightly. Allie had never understood why pure blood was so above everything else to some people, but. . . Before she lost herself in her thoughts again, Allie focused on listening to Crissy's story.
"Oh, it's fine," she said, guessing that the girl had a few worries about being Muggle born in the Wizarding World. That was a talent of hers, being able to figure out how others were feeling. "There will be many muggle-borns at Hogwarts - and everywhere else magical, it's part of magic. I even heard we might have Muggle Studies Classes one day." Hoping she had comforted the other girl at least a little, Allie waited for a reply.
