Dear Tân,

This is probably somewhat out of the blue, and it's certainly more delayed than I would have, or perhaps should have, sent this, but nevertheless... I'm writing to you because of what happened at the Blossom Ball. Obviously that was a bit of a trying event, and if you aren't comfortable talking about it, I understand, but I'm hoping I might be able to get some insight from you. I will admit, there isn't much of significance that I can recall before the mosps showed up, but I do recall thinking when you relieved me of my date for a time that you appeared to know something.

Perhaps this is a bit presumptuous of me to ask, and if it is, I apologise. Even aside from the ball, though, I recall seeing you in the library on the day that I was looking into hags. You had come with Vanes, if I'm remembering right. We didn't really get the opportunity to speak much on that occasion, but would I be wrong in assuming you're at least curious about the goings on about the castle? Lear's disappearance, the attacks on the common rooms, the laced candies, the hag in the forest and all of that? Do you know anything about it?

If not.. and if nothing else... If you're willing, I would still be curious to hear your version of what happened at the ball. I've been trying to get a better idea of what happened beyond the obvious, and I'm hoping that by getting different perspectives, we might be able to uncover small details of importance.

Kind regards,
E. Decipio

Dear Decipio,

I have never before thought of notes as something that could possibly be as formal as the one you have recently passed me, but you have caught my interest; something that doesn't happen all that often, I have to say.
I must admit I was quite surprised, I didn't think we have ever had enough to do with each other for you to think of reaching out to me, but I am pleased that you did. Admittedly, I'm not sure of how much help I can be exactly, but I do think I may know of a few things that could be pieces to that puzzle you are looking to solve.

I also feel like I need to apologise for hijacking your date at the Ball, I swear I had the full intention of returning him to you safe and sound. Often things don't seem to go as planned, I suppose.

I would be happy to share with you what I know, however little it may be, if you are willing to return the favour and fill me in on what you have managed to uncover thus far as well. I do enjoy a mystery.
However, there are a couple of things I would like to know before giving anything away:

Firstly, what are your intentions with the gathered information? Do you believe there is anything you could do about hags and midnight attacks? A tall order for a student.
Secondly, who else are you involving in your quest for information? If I am sharing anything with you I would like to know who else you will be sharing it with. I would much prefer knowing whose ears my words might reach before I say them.

Kind Regards (I hope to drop the formalities in future notes; I am certainly not a formal type of person),
Ruka Tân

Tan,

I will admit, I wouldn't have considered what I wrote to you to be a note so much as a letter.. But I suppose they could be one and the same in a way. I hope I didn't — and don't — cause you any discomfort in its apparent formality, though. I'm not really sure how to write any other way. I'm glad to have gotten your attention, though. Perhaps it's true that we haven't really had much to do with each other, but I do recall you being in the library when I was looking into hags, and you did make rather the impression at the ball. So paths have been crossed enough for me to reach out at least.

Truly, I'm not sure how much you could help, either, but I think that's sort of the state of things with everyone to some degree. Or rather, I think that everyone can be helpful at least to some degree. Even to know your perspective of the ball would be helpful, and if I'm lucky, maybe you'll make mention of a detail that nobody else noticed. Even the smallest of things can cast a large shadow. Or so my mother says. Admittedly not quite in those words, though.

And it's alright. Really. It's not as though I fancy Flash or anything, and it looked as though the two of you enjoyed your time to dance together. Quite picturesque, really.

As for the rest of your requests and questions…

If I am completely honest, I'm not sure if there is something that I could do or not. In fact, I doubt that I, alone, could do much of anything at all. But I'm not trying to do anything alone. One of the things I've noticed is that there seem to be many people, staff and student, who know a little bit about certain things. That was made apparent at the first Liberation meeting and continues to hold true. As far as I can tell, there hasn't been anyone who has tried to track it all down and put it all in a pot. I suppose that's what I am hoping to do. To collect as much information as I can so that some of these pieces start to make sense.

Even the professors didn't know much of the information that various Gryffindor students had discovered. And that was only them. There have been occurrences in both the Slythern and Hufflepuff dorms, and yet it doesn't seem to be as though there's been much attempt to make sense of any of it or see if there is a connection or a pattern. I'm not very powerful, and I'm not very brave, but I'm told I have a keen eye for details and patterns. I'm hoping that's what I can offer, and then forward that information to the people who can actually make use of it and do something about everything.

Of course… that has to be done with care lest the information fall into the wrong hands.

As for who else I'm involving.. I'm not really sure how to answer that. I suppose that depends on the need and the information. I'd prefer to not to have to pass information along to anyone more than what would be needed. And even if I were to know some specific individuals now, I don't particularly wish to implicate them in a letter. I hope you understand. And in that regard, I'm happy to share some of what I know, but I would rather do so in person if you're willing. Perhaps in the evening sometime this weekend?

Decipio,

While I wouldn't have said that the formality of your last letter made me uncomfortable, I'm still glad you have reduced it this time. It certainly makes me feel less like I'm on trial somehow, so thank you.

You seem to work under the impression that there is strength in numbers, which is very likely to be true in this particular case, though I wonder how many mouths are merely talking for the sake of exercising their vocal cords. We don't know each other very well so you have to excuse me for questioning if you are able to separate the voices you should be listening to from those that only want you to listen to them. Still, you seem to me like a smart person, so I am willing to place that trust in you as you are placing at least some of it in me by reaching out.

I am admittedly more aware of happenings in the Slytherin Common Room than I am with anything having happened in Hufflepuff and as you are in touch with Flash, I assume, his first hand perspective on those happenings is surely more reliable than my retelling of them, but I suspect I might know a thing or two about the hags that could be helpful. I'll also be happy to talk about my perspective of the Ball, however messy it may have been. Perhaps we can make some sense of it together.

I understand your reluctance to go into detail in written word perfectly well and respect that without question. Talking in person would be understandably preferable and I think I may know of a place we can talk privately. The walls have ears, as they say, especially in this castle, so location is key to keeping a secret, well, secret.

If it is convenient to you, meet me on Saturday evening, say 7pm, in the seventh floor corridor, by the tapestry of that guy teaching trolls how to ballet dance. Unless you already know of this place, I may be able to show you something else that might be of use to you.
