Alike Pet Finished

SAPPHIRE HAD BEEN EXCEEDINGLY EXCITED BY THE PROSPECT OF BEING ABLE TO PURCHASE A PET. It had taken her quite a while to save up, but she'd finally done it. She just didn't know what she wanted.

Before heading into the Magical Menagerie, the pale girl took a few deep breaths, psyching herself up. She muttered something about how she shouldn't be so nervous, then headed in. The hinges of the door creaked slightly, reminding her of the unnecessary loudness she remembered hearing when sneaking in or out of rooms as a child. She almost laughed at the thought, but she restrained herself.

Vibrant blue orbs roamed the shop upon entering, briefly focusing on an old, white-haired couple. She assumed that they were the ones who ran the shop. She was taller than the woman, though just barely, and quite a few inches shorter than the man. She gave a small wave, awkward as humanly possible, before moving her eyes to the pets, almost missing the kind wave the woman had given her. Her feet carried her over to the cat, worn soles of her converse making soft padding noises. It was almost akin to a cat (which she was ironically walking towards), so quiet it was.

Surrounded by the animals and a slight musty scent that reminded her of a forest, her eyes held a softness that wasn't normally present, especially with people present. She kept her eyes carefully trained on the floor, making sure not to bump into anything or draw attention to herself. When she reached the creatures, she lifted her gaze to the creatures.

They were beautiful. Sapphire had always had a particular liking for animals, especially cats. Cats and snakes, but she wasn't allowed to bring one of those too Hogwarts, nor would she have enough money, she guessed. It'd taken her long enough to get the money she was going to be spending today. Snakes would probably cost a lot more than what she possessed. She looked at them with bright eyes, a child-like wonder filling the usually dull orbs. She would've liked to get the fluffy Siberian, but that was a bit too expensive for her. The fact that she couldn't get that pet just reiterated the fact that she was quite poor in the sense of wizard money (not that she had much muggle money either, but she decided that that was against the point.

She sighed, eyes dulling a fraction. But she also quite liked the other specimens.

She was intrigued by the Mackerels, especially the ones with greyish coats. She wandered closer to them, cocking her head slightly to the side. It was a little thing she did when she was curious about something or had a question, quite like an owl. (Actually, thinking about it, a lot of her mannerisms were similar to those of various animals) Bright eyes examined the animals, seeming calculating even when her thoughts weren't headed in that direction. Then they caught on those of a Grey Mackerel. Her breath hitched. The eyes were a striking, odd blue that was very similar to her own. She didn't think that eye colour was very common. Her feet carried her even closer to that particular specimen. She blinked, thoughts running through her head. The cat watched her, eyes holding a certain light, which Sapphire was quite familiar with. It was as if it was telling her, "Try me." She'd worn that expression herself on numerous occasions.

Her own expression was suddenly mimicking that of the cat as they engaged in a sort of staring contest. She was sure to draw some odd looks, since it would be quite an odd interaction. She was also the first to blink, expression conveying something similar to "I'll get you back."

She suddenly heard small laughs coming from behind her, startling her. She swivelled her head in the direction of the noise, spotting the woman from earlier. Upon closer examinations, she saw that she was wearing a floral dress and was indeed an inch or two shorter than her. She smelled slightly of sugar cookies and her white hair was nicely styled (much neater than Sapphire's own ever was). "U-um, did you need something ma'am?" she asked nervously, afraid she'd done something wrong.

The woman smiled softly, as if trying to calm the pale-haired child's nerves. "No, I just came over because I was curious about your interactions with this cat," she said, waving her hand towards the creature to reiterate her point.

"Ah, yeah. Erm, how much would I need to pay for it?" she asked, deciding not to call it by a particular gender in hopes of not misinterpreting it.

"She's 10 galleons," the woman said. "Have you taken an interest in her?" Blue orbs locked with almost identical ones before they returned to the woman. She gave a wan smile and nodded.

The woman returned the nod, and brought Sapph (now holding the cat in her arms) towards a counter where the shopkeepers supposedly made transactions with customers. It was a fairly quick transaction, in which she paid with her (very small) amount of money and in exchange got ownership of the cat, which was perched on Sapph's shoulder like a bird. It almost made the pale hair laugh, but she was also afraid that she would fall off.

Before she left, she was stopped by the woman. "Would you like a cookie?" she said kindly, suddenly making Sapphire aware of why she'd smelled like it. "I normally give them to people who're well-behaved and courteous," she said.

Sapphire's lips quirked up in a smile. "Thank you," she said. She wasn't all that used to people being so kind to her, but she was glad for it.

Once she received her cookie, she wandered out of the store. She paused beside the door, casting her gaze towards the cat. She hummed to herself. "What do you think of the name Melanie?" she questioned. The cat made a noise of approval. Sapphire hummed in response. "Well, let's get home then, Melanie."
