July 5th
8:00 AM

Marshal had always been a morning person. There were just so many things that one could do, things that he felt he would miss out on if he were asleep longer than anyone else. Then again, by that same nature, he also had issue with going to sleep if he knew others around him were still awake. The fact of the matter was, he hated the idea of things happening without him. He wanted to be involved- to be the one who told the story later, rather than the one who listened to someone else's account of past events.
Naturally, he had awoken from his slumber at about six o-clock this morning. Unfortunately, he had found that most of the other kids at the camp held no desire to be up quite that early, with a few exceptions. Yet he still didn't want to go back to bed, and decided to take advantage of the slightly lonely situation.
Having been at the camp for a few days now, he knew the general layout of the tent area, as well as some of the other spots around camp. But in the span of just under two hours, he had familiarized himself with as much of his surroundings as possible- within the boundaries of where campers were allowed to roam, of course.

Finally, his stomach had informed him that it was time to eat. His stomach was the boss, of course, and he hadn't hesitated before wandering back to the area where he knew breakfast was to be served every morning.
As he was coming to learn, the cooking staff at Hogwarts never disappointed. Every morning, a delicious array of breakfast food - ranging from eggs, to toast, to waffles - could be found in the indicated place, at exactly the promised time. If that wasn't a winning quality, Marshal didn't know what was. Though he still wasn't entirely certain where the food actually came from. He had never seen the people responsible for providing such a wondrous display, which was a shame, since he would have loved to congratulate them on their ineffable talents.
Now arriving at the eating area, he caught sight of the long table sporting numerous delectable options, some he had seen on previous days, others entirely new.
Approaching the table, he closed his eyes for a moment, slowly breathing in the delightful smells before releasing a blissful sigh of pleasure. Opening his eyes, he grabbed a plate and began selecting the different dishes that he would soon be enjoying.

Satisfied with his choices, he spotted an empty picnic table nearby and headed towards it, placing his full plate upon its surface once he arrived.
Sitting down, he took one last look at the food on his plate- scrambled eggs, bacon, and a stack of pancakes generously lathered in maple syrup. The syrup was starting to invade space outside of its designated region, but that was perfectly fine with him; a little extra flavor on your eggs never hurt.
Glancing around, he saw some other kids seated at different tables, and more funneling from the tent area. He wondered if anyone might be so inclined to join him at his one-man picnic table. He certainly hoped so. And if not, then he would simply have to go find someone to bother, a habit that he had developed quite nicely.
Shrugging, he picked up his fork. That problem would just have to wait.

Breakfast time!
... didn't really exist for the Slytherin. She had a quite unsteady sleeping pattern, so sometimes she didn't even have breakfast at all. Today it was different though. Camplife had fixed Opeila's sleep pretty much, so she woke up at around 7.40 am.

The brunette got herself some toast and eggs before she looked around for a table. It was a shame that the camps were mostly separated, she would have loved to socialize more with the other schools, but that was okay. From what she had heard there were some first years to be at the camp as well, which was quite interesting. Opeila remembered being there herself, unsorted and unfamiliar, intimidated by the older kids, the countless corridors of Hogwarts and magic itself.

It was not like she hadn't known magic before, after all she had lived in a house with two witches. Her muggle father had seen to it, that Opeila didn't see a lot of it, but it was almost impossible to hide it. He couldn't forbid his wife and her mother to use magic. Sometimes Opeila thought that he was jealous. He was no wizard but was forced to see how much easier life was with magic every day. No wonder really that he had tried to hide Opeila's letter. That he tried to keep someone close to him, in the world he lived in. Selfish, but not surprising.

The compromise had been that he could get the summer for himself and his daughter alone. And they had spent three amazing weeks travelling through Italy together, one of the best times that Opeila had ever had with her father. She had inherited his fascination for antic buildings and places, one of the very few things they shared and they had visited so many places.

It was strange how it was the best when she got the adults seperated. Time with her dad alone- almost better than time with Lady Margary. Time with her mother- rare. But good.

Still, Hogwarts was where she belonged. Where she felt... somewhat near accepted.

Opeila walked over to a table that was empty except for one boy that looked about her age. Except that she had never seen him in a class or in the corridors, so possibly one of the new first years. He didn't look like he was older than her.

The Slytherin sat down opposite him and put down her plate. "Morning... Hope you don't mind me sitting here." She greeted him, still a little tired.

"Morning... Hope you don't mind me sitting here."
With a large bite of pancakes still in his mouth, Marshal looked up, surprised. He hadn't even noticed the girl before she spoke. The food was just too delicious to warrant him giving his attention to anything else.
He was greeted by a pair of pretty green eyes, framed by pale skin and reddish brown hair. Those green eyes were looking at him, waiting for a response to the question. Or had it actually been a question? More of a statement that she was going sit there, and simply hoped that he wasn't dreadfully offended by it. Well, he certainly wasn't offended in any way.
He wanted to tell her that, but wasn't able to do so immediately, as he still had a large amount of food in his mouth, therefore hindering his ability to reply. So he threw up one finger, silently telling her to wait a moment while he hurriedly chewed.
A few seconds later, he managed to swallow the mouthful. After running his tongue along the front of his teeth to ensure that nothing had gotten stuck there, he smiled eagerly.
"By all means, please have a seat," he said. "I'm definitely not going to complain" And there it was, his first flirtatious words in the conversation. It couldn't be helped; it was hardly his fault that there seemed to be so many girls he found attractive at this summer camp. What else was a guy supposed to do?
According to his mother, his father had always been the same way- terribly romantic and flirtatious, even at the worst of times. Then again, his mom always seemed to enjoy it, because what girl doesn't like a compliment or four? Unfortunately, he would most likely find out the answer to that question during his time at summer camp and Hogwarts.

Glancing back down at his plate, then again at the girl, he realized that he was now faced with a conundrum; should he show more interest in her or his heavenly breakfast?
Like the problem-solving wiz that he truly was, he quickly came to the obvious conclusion that he could focus on both at the same time.
Stabbing another forkful of the syrup-dampened pancakes, he raised it in front of him and said, "I don't know much about Hogwarts, but I can say one thing for sure; if the food is always this good, then I'm going to have an excellent time." Shoving the food into his mouth, he closed his eyes and let out a sigh of intense pleasure, now chewing slowly and deliberately.
Swallowing, he grinned again- an expression that occupied his face for the majority of his life.
"My name is Marshal. I'm new here." He cocked his head slightly to the side. "What's your name? And believe me, the pleasure is all mine."
He grabbed some scrambled eggs with his fork and swirled them in some syrup that had ventured away from the pancakes before putting them in his mouth.

Opeila sent the boy a little smile when he allowed her to sit at his table, turning a little red when she realized that she pretty much just forced him to endure her presence. This sort of rudeness was how she got herself into an uncomfortable situation with Jack Burnett the last time, she really had to watch her words more. "Sorry, I... I'm not exactly the nicest person to talk to in the morning.", she said before taking a bite from her toast.

Opeila's assumption that the boy was new got confirmed when he said that he didn't know much about Hogwarts and then praised the food. The girl froze while still chewing on her toast. Did he want her to tell him exciting, wonderful, magical things about Hogwarts? The things that she had expected when she crossed the great lake with a boat, looking at the castle?
Well, where to start? The spiderattack or the mosps at the blossom ball? While Opeila felt at home in Hogwarts, she was aware that the preference of Hogwarts before her own home was a personal thing. After all her home wasn't exactly normal either. He went on introducing himself and saying that he was new.

A bit relieved she continued to chew and swallowed her toast before she nodded. "Nice to meet you, Marshal, I am Opeila. I've just finished my first year. And yes, Hogwarts food is great. Made by house-elves in the kitchens. In the castle we will have our meals in the great hall. It's ceiling is bewitched to look like the sky outside. There are candles floating in the air everywhere. One of the most... well alive places I would almost say."

It wouldn't be her who destroyed the boy's postivie expectations. And besides, who knew what would happen in the next year? Who was to say that it would be as terrifying as the last?

He noticed her turn faintly pink following his initial words. Must be his charm working already; it wouldn't be the first time, though of course it wasn't always effective, maybe not even the majority of the time. But that was of no consequence right now.
"Sorry, I... I'm not exactly the nicest person to talk to in the morning," she then said, introducing him to the possibility that her change of color had nothing to do with his admittedly unreliable amount of captivating ability.
Realizing that she felt embarrassed about the way she had approached him, he quickly attempted to deflect any amount of discomfort that she was feeling.
"There's nothing you need to apologize for," he said with a shake of his head. "If this is as rude as you get in the mornings, then you must be a downright saint the rest of the day." He should have stopped talking then, but the act of doing so was a foreign concept to his brain. Why stop when he had so much to say? He continued, "Besides, if you hadn't sat down, the only person I'd have to talk to would be me, and believe it or not, I'm an exhausting person to have a conversation with."
Maybe his problem wasn't a lack of charm, per say. Perhaps the real issue was that he had an impeccable propensity for making himself look like a crazy person within the first few moments of meeting someone. On the bright side, a skill was a skill, no matter the desirability or the practicality of said skill.
To his credit, he did have a doubt in his mind as to whether he should have added that last part or not, but he was too much like his father to show any regret about it. Instead, he took another bite of eggs.

The girl introduced herself as Opeila. Apparently, she had already finished her first year at Hogwarts, and therefore knew much more about the place than he did. Not like it was hard to know more than him; just about everyone did. So the more people he befriended that could teach him about the way his life was going to be from now on, the better.
Opeila went on to indicate that Hogwarts food was indeed as pleasurable as what he was currently eating, specifically saying that it was "Made by house-elves in the kitchens."
Hearing that detail, Marshal nearly choked on his eggs. The rest of what Opeila said was lost to him as he tried to force the food down his throat. Looking past his plate to where one would normally place their drink, he now regretted the fact that he hadn't poured himself a glass of orange juice.
Seconds later, he managed to swallow the mouthful down and erupted into a small coughing fit, covering his mouth with the inside of his elbow. If his company were to ask if he was okay, he would nod vigorously.
Finally regaining control of himself, he looked back at Opeila, disbelief evident on his face. "Elves?" He exclaimed. "Like small people that wear green and make toys? Do some of them specialize in food instead?" Placing his elbows on the table, he narrowed his eyes. "Is Santa Claus the headmaster?"
He was mostly joking about Santa Claus. A couple of years previously, he had pieced all the clues together and confronted his parents concerning the existence of a fat guy with a beard that used reindeer to pull his sleigh through the sky in order to bring presents to kids all over the world. Realizing that the jig was up, his parents had confirmed his suspicions, and he had known the truth ever since. But now that he thought about it, the idea that Santa Claus existed wasn't a lot more far-fetched than all the other magical truths he had learned recently.
Marshal suddenly felt like his life was one big conspiracy theory.
"I really am dreaming all of this, aren't I?"

Opeila chuckled when Marshal started to talk again. While Opeila had always found the noisy breakfasts in the Great Hall rather annoying, she now found that it was nice to have someone to talk to. And that morning enthusiasts were not as exhausting as she had thought. Instead she found herself smiling, her moog lightening up. "Well, I guess that it's good that we are sitting together then. I've been called an exhausting pessimist before. You seem to be more of a... possibly exhausting optimist to me. Also, who said that this is the worst I get in the mornings? You shouldn't run into me when my exam stress sets in."

Either Marshal had tried to say something while eating, or he was so surprised about the fact that house-elves prepared the food in Hogwarts, that he choked on his food. Opeila wasn't entirely sure. A little helpless she watched him cough. "You okay?", she asked when he looked like he was able to breathe again.
Apparently it was the elves that confused him so much. He asked her if the elves were like the ones that made toys for christmas and if Santa was headmaster. For a moment she just stared back at him. Was he serious? Seemingly so. The corners of her mouth twitched when she tried not to laugh, but in the end she couldn't hold it back. Opeila covered her mouth with her hands and laughed. This was the first time in months that she honestly laughed. Laughed because she found something seriously funny, not to convince people not to worry about her. Maybe she laughed a little too long, but she didn't want to let that feeling go so quickly.

Finally she stopped, cleared her throat and removed one tear from one corner of her eyes. "Sorry, I..." She chuckled again. "I didn't mean to laugh. So house-elves have nothing to do with christmas, I think the only thing they share with those other elves is the pointy ears. House-elves have like.. a grey-ish colour, somewhere close to human skin colour but... not quite. Then the house-elves pretty much live to serve. Not that they are forced to- or most are not, I guess there are always exceptions- but they want to serve. They are practically slaves by nature, freed when you give them clothes. And no, they are not naked, they often wear dishclothes and things like that. They don't want to be freed though. They seem to see it as punishment." Most of that she had read in a book, but she had also encountered house-elves a few times, in the corridors of Hogwarts. They had helped her set up her hot chocolat get together as well as her Slytherin pillowfight. "The Hogwarts elves are great. They provided me with food or other supplies for events.", she added her own experience to that explanation.

"I haven't seen our headmaster really after the start of the year feast last year, but I am certain that he is not Santa Claus." She grinned. "I assume you are a muggleborn? Non-magical family?", she asked. Opeila herself had been brought up like a muggle child, despite her grandmother and mother being magical. Of course she had seen magic ever now and then, but it had always been beyond her grasp. "I promise, you are not dreaming. But I understand how you feel."

Prior to his little choking hazard, Marshal listened intently to Opeila as she spoke.
"Well, I guess that it's good that we are sitting together then," she said.
Very good indeed, he thought, nodding enthusiastically in reply as she went on.
"I've been called an exhausting pessimist before. You seem to be more of a... possibly exhausting optimist to me."
His eyebrows raised in a thoughtful expression at that. An exhausting optimist. He kind of liked the sound of that, and she wasn't wrong. He certainly had a tendency to always find the positives in any given situation, even when there didn't really seem to be any; a silver lining to every cloud and all that.
Life was hard enough already. Marshal didn't see any point in feeding the negativity with a gloomy attitude of your own. Dwelling on everything that had or could go wrong in life didn't serve any good purpose, and that is why he preferred to stay optimistic, even to an exhausting extent; to look for that silver lining, that beam of sunlight filtering through the dark clouds.
Obviously, he wasn't always a perfect optimist. Even he had plenty of moments filled with doubt, sadness and anger, especially following his sister's passing. But if you honestly look hard enough, there will always be a ray of hope and joy behind the cloud cover, some small reason to smile. He had been taught that way, and truly believed it.

"Also, who said that this is the worst I get in the mornings? You shouldn't run into me when my exam stress sets in."
Marshal curled his lip in slight disgust as Opeila mentioned exams. Now, there was one thing he struggled to stay positive about- school.
He still held out hope that homework and exams would be more interesting than the subjects at his old school, considering they were learning about magic, but by the sounds of how she was describing her stress, apparently the classes were still difficult.
"Right," he replied with understanding. "Even if you try to be a good person, all bets are off when exams start. Personally, my brain just goes foggy if anyone mentions what I'm supposed to be studying about."

It was after those words that Opeila went on to talk about elves and Marshal forgot how to swallow food.
When he brought up his question about headmaster Saint Nicholas, he immediately saw the corners of her mouth twitch. To her credit, she did give it a good effort, but true mirth always seems to find a way out.
She laughed, long and hard, as Marshal watched. While he was slightly mortified by her reaction, and still confused by the whole situation, the sound was so pure and melodic that he couldn't keep one corner of his mouth from slowly raising upward in a half-grin. There really wasn't anything better than making somebody genuinely laugh, even if it was at his own detriment. Bringing a moment of delight to somebody else's life made him happy in turn. It was just a good feeling.

Once she was able to regain a bit of control over herself, Opeila apologized, wiping a tear from her eye.
Way to go, genius, you made her cry, said some sarcastic part of himself.
Opeila then described what she had meant when she said "elves." Mainly willing servants with gray skin. How odd. Why were they called elves, he wondered. At least they had pointy ears; that was something.
"They are practically slaves by nature, freed when you give them clothes."
Marshal immediately raised a questioning finger and opened his mouth to speak, but was promptly interrupted.
"And no, they are not naked, they often wear dishclothes and things like that," Opeila explained.
Marshal slowly lowered his hand and closed his mouth, squinting as he tried to picture the little creatures running around, basically in their underwear. He opened his mouth once again, then shook his head, thinking better of it.
She explained a bit more about the elves, then assured him that headmaster Saint Nicholas did not exist, at least not at Hogwarts.
He made a mental note to double, then triple check the name marked on his invitation letter.

"I assume you are a muggleborn? Non-magical family? I promise, you are not dreaming. But I understand how you feel."

Apparently they had a name for people without magic. Add that to the growing list of new information.
His breakfast plate forgotten for the time being, he cocked his head at her and said, "Well, my parents were more confused when my invitation letter came than I was, so I guess I am mu... mundle-" He lifted his hands off the table in an exasperated motion, then plopped them back on the table. "You know, that word you just said. My dad kept pinching himself for weeks, just to be sure he was really awake. I'm pretty sure he had concerns about his sanity by the time I came here, actually. I hope he doesn't think he's a cat or something when I go back..." He looked past her, staring blankly into the distance as he trailed off.
Focusing back on her, he asked, "So is your family the same way?"

Opeila's eyebrows rose in surprise, when she realized that he was- or at least seemed to be-actually worried about the subjects. For Opeila it had been very different. When she first entered Hogwarts, she had not spent a thought on the subjects even. She had escaped her life at home. Her father who never seemed to accept her how she was. Punished her for it even.

But of course it wouldn't be like that for everyone. For many students magic and Hogwarts must seem like an adventure! It certainly was. The most dangerous adventure Opeila was ever thrown into.
The feeling came out of nowhere and caught her off guard. Opeila wanted to warn the boy. No, not warn him. Protect him.
There was too much innocence in his words. Once he entered the school, how long would it last until he lost his maybe exhausting, but somehow adorable enthusiasm?

"The classes are quite cool. I love charms very much, it is my best subject. Nothing worse than an O.", she said, a little pride in her voice. "I guess that's a matter of opinion though. The most subjects are not too hard. Transfiguration is tricky, but doable if one has the patience to deal with it. I don't." She shrugged. "Potions is quite alright,
I know that some people are scared of flying... Defense against the Dark Arts is exciting. Astronomy is ok when you can deal with heights and Herbology as long as you listen to Professor MacDa- MacTavish."
She could remember her first Herbology lesson quite well, in which the Professor had told them not to listen to their (former) Flying teacher, Professor Bercegeay, who apparently liked to refer to him as MacDaddy. "Later there will also be Divination, Ancient Runes, Muggle Studies and Care of Magical Creatures. In year 3 I believe."

Her gaze wandered to another table and a mischievous smile appeared on her face. "Watch this...", she wispered and drew her wand. She pointed it at the plate of a girl. "Wingardium Leviosa" One of the first spells she had learned and by now she had pretty much mastered it. She barely needed to concentrate. Opeila watched the plate rise in the air and let it fly to the other end of the table, where she put it down again.
"This is what you learn for example. They give you prank tools.", she said with a smirk and put her wand away again. And weapons. And tools to defend yourself from those who own the same weapons.

She got more serious when he told her baout his family and then asked her if hers was like that as well. Opeila shook her head. "Not quite. My dad is the only muggle, my mum, Lady Margary- my grandmother- and I are all magical. And he hates it. My dad is not a fan of magic at all, but he could never bring himself to tell me why. My theory is that he is jealous and ashamed for being selfish in that way. My family is quite complicated."

There was more, so much more she could have said, but Opeila had learned her lesson about trusting strangers too much in her first year already. So instead she asked him another question. "Do you have siblings?"

@Opeila Winters
Opeila explained a bit about the subjects he would face in the coming school year. It seemed as though she was trying to reassure him, but the attempt fell somewhat flat as he caught a particular piece of information; "Nothing worse than an O" in a class called Charms.
Marshal's eyebrows shot up. An O? he thought anxiously. What is that supposed to mean?
In his whole life, he had never heard of such a grade. In other words, even the grading system would be new to him. He might get a good grade on his first project and think he had failed, having no way to know. Talk about stress.

He tried not to appear too concerned as Opeila continued, though it wasn't too difficult once she mentioned flying.
Anxiety flying out the window entirely, the enthusiastic grin returned to his face. "How could anyone be scared of flying? That sounds like the best thing ever!" he gushed. "Imagine the things you could do! You could go anywhere, anytime. I never used to even imagine that I might be able to fly, but now that I know I can, it's like the best dream I've ever had! And I can't wait to play quidditch!"
It was clear what the first-year-to-be was most excited about. He simply couldn't wait to get his hands on one of those brooms. Too bad they had to enchanted, though, or else he would have stolen the broom his mom used to sweep the kitchen long ago. Heck, he would have tried it with a vacuum if he had to.
"Do you have an enchanted broom? What's it like to fly?" he questioned.

It seemed the answers would have to wait a bit longer, but it was worth it. Opeila pulled out a stick - wait, no. It was a wand.
"Watch this..." she said quietly. And Marshal did, his eyes following the wand to where she was pointing it. She murmured some sort of gibberish, and the plate in front of a girl seated at another table rose into the air.
Eyes wide as the plate, Marshal watched as it floated to the other end of the table, much to the chagrin of the girl it belonged to. He stared, rubbed his eyes, then stared some more. If the victim of the prank had looked his way in search of the culprit, he likely looked surprised enough to avoid suspicion.
After several more moments of ogling the platter, he whipped around to face Opeila. "That was amazing! That could make for the best pranks ever. How did you do that? You said something weird. Windy Levitator... Windo levitatio..." After a couple attempts, he gave up on saying it correctly.
If he could learn tricks like that, then all of the craziness would be worth it. That was real magic.

She told him of her family, explaining that her father hated magic, which confused Marshal. How could you possibly hate something so spectacular? There was so much potential that he already saw in magic, possibilities that would have been laughable before he knew of its existence. What was to hate?
"I'm sorry to hear that," he said with sincerity, leaning over the table, then added, "I think magic is great."

Then the question came. "Do you have siblings?"
His eyes immediately dropped to his hands, which clasped together. "I... I guess not," he said quietly, almost as if talking to himself. "I mean, I used to have a sister, but she got really sick a few years ago, and, well..." he couldn't bring himself to finish the sentence, and instead looked back at Opeila, a hand drifting to the rope necklace he wore. "She made me this when she was sick."
Tears threatened to pour from his eyes, his heart feeling suddenly heavy, like a cold stone in his hollow chest. It was the same way he always felt when he gave a lot of thought to the subject. And like always, he pulled away from the despair, forcing the tears back and a grin onto his face.
"Looks pretty good on me, wouldn't you say?"

Opeila saw the confusion in his eyes when she mentioned her top grades in charms. She completely forgot that those grades were only used in Hogwarts and for a muggle born thereby complete news. "Oh- right. That is the equivalent for A in Hogwarts basically. Quite simple: O- Outstanding, E- Exceed Expectations, A- Acceptable, P- Poor, D- Dreadful, T-Troll. Yes, that's because trolls are not exactly the brightest creatures alive, I guess. And yeah, trolls are a thing. Huge... disgusting looking... violent things. Never met one and don't want to either. But there are some good images in the books in the library." Why was she talking so much? Where did that come from?

It seemed that she hit the target in the middle when she mentioned flying. "You're that guy, huh?" She chuckled. "Of all things, Quidditch you know? Placing my bet that you'll be a Gryffindor." His excitement and enthusiasm spoke their own language. "You know, I just don't feel particularly save in the air with only a thin broomstick to hold on to. That's not my world. But as soon as they open the dueling club... For that I'd be down in a second." He asked her if she had a broom and what it was like to fly.
"No, I don't have a broom. Those cost tons. I am not rich and rather save up my money. You know that we can go to the village in our third year? For me that is only one more year. Having no money then would suck.
Flying... I don't think I am the right person to ask that, I'd just talk it down for you."
She smiled a little.

His reaction to her little prank was amazing. While her victim was still looking for the guilty person, Opeila hid her grin behind her hair. "Wingardium Leviosa, the levitation charm. One of the first spells I learned in Charms. Told you it is my best subject."

Changing the topic to family was a mistake. Asking about his siblings in particular even more. What made her do that even, she didn't like to be asked about hers herself? For a moment she was scared that he would start to cry. "I- I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked, I-"
He then showed her a rope necklace his sister made for him. A light smile appeared on Opeila's face. "It does.", she said and nodded. She didn't want to think of Maybell. She didn't want to think of her family.
