Amelia’s fathers favorite subject had always been Potions or Defense Against the Dark Arts. He excelled in both those areas, and growing up the Ravenclaw had been expected to be just as good, if not his little prodigy. He had spoken highly of all his professors back at Hogwarts and told her stories about crazy, successful potions and how exciting it was to brew them. Having wanted nothing but to get to Hogwarts and make her father proud, Amelia was more than excited to attend every class. The part that was always difficult, though, was being partnered up with another random student.

Having focused mainly on her academics growing up, and having grown up as an only child, the eleven year old didn’t do very well in socializing, especially forced socialization. There had been a lot of times growing up where Amelia had been made to play or hang around kids that she did not see eye-to-eye with, and had only been encouraged to be around them because of their blood status. Being paired up in class gave her a very similar feeling, and more than not the Ravenclaw felt she was…perhaps a tad bit smarter than her peers.

Having shown up for class that day, making it down to the dungeons in her usual good mood, the Lovell girl was disappointed to hear they’d be paired up to do the brewing of the potion in class that day. She resisted the urge to groan and bury her head in her arms. Her smile had faded into an indifferent expression as the professor paired them off one by one. Her name eventually came. “Amelia Lovell and…Krystal Silver.” Blinking a couple times in recognition, her dark gaze caught that of a vaguely familiar looking girl. Amelia thought she had perhaps seen the girl around their common room, but she couldn’t be sure.

With a small sigh escaping her lips, believing today would be just like any other day she was paired up with another classmate, the eleven year old picked up her pile of parchment and books and headed towards their designated potion-making area. Setting her things down at the desk the two of them would share, Amelia turned towards the girl who she’d be working with the remainder of the class. She had bright white hair and light blue eyes. She appeared to be friendly enough, and Amelia shot her a small smile and decided to enact her manners.

I’m Amelia Lovell, Ravenclaw first year. Nice to meet you.” Looking back up at the blackboard after her short introduction, the brunette read off out loud the potion they’d be making that day. “It looks like we’ll be brewing the Forgetfulness Potion.” It didn’t look to complicated to the pureblood, but she didn’t know the skill-level of her acquaintance quite yet. “Are you any good at Potions?” The question seemed blunt as her gaze fell back onto the blue-eyed girl, but her tone was genuinely curious.

Krystal liked potion class so far and she had outstanding grades in this subject for now. As another class of potions began, she was assigned to a girl named Amelia. She sat next to the brunette, who shot a warm smile towards her. The blue-eyed girl kindly returned the favor and listened to the girl's words. Introducing herself again, Krystal already knew that Amelia was from Ravenclaw. She saw her in the common room a few times but never talked to her.
"I'm Krystal, also Ravenclaw."
She answered, brushing a strand of her hair behind her ear.  Amelia mentioned the Forgetfulness Potion, so Krystal opened her book. Browsing through the pages, she found the potion quite fast. Looking back at Amelia, she then answered her question:
"I've been doing good so far."
She kindly spoke and read a few lines from the book.
"Will you get the ingredients or should I?"
She didn't want to boss Amelia around, since it was a partner job, after all, so she decided to ask for her opinion first. It would be more efficient if one of them stayed at the cauldron, making sure everything was set while the other gets the ingredients so they could start as soon as possible.
She then tucked her sleeves and grabbed two black rubber bands off her wrist. She grabbed her silky hair and tied it in a ponytail, letting some of her locks fall out. Holding the other band, she stretched her hand towards the brunette, signaling to take the rubber band if she needed it.
It would be easier and safer if their hair wasn't in the way of potion brewing.

Krystal didn’t seem too intimidating or mean-spirited as she returned Amelia’s smile. The Ravenclaw proceeded to relax in her seat then, her shoulders visibly easing. It was always a rough start with any other student, but having someone be open and friendly with her in an obvious manner made things more comfortable. Having not been around much social interaction outside of forced small-talk with other pureblood children, Amelia was bad with social cues and people who had blank expressions, or apathetic tones of voice.

When the blue-eyed girl reassured her that she was in Ravenclaw as well, it dawned on the Lovell girl that she had, indeed, seen her around the common room a few times. Not really one to be the first to engage in conversation, it was not too big of a surprise that the two hadn’t spoken before, despite being in the same house. She felt that that year, the Ravenclaw house was dominating with the number of students. Having expected to come into Hogwarts with an even amount distributed through the houses, after a while she realized it would be quite the task to meet and talk with all her housemates and had given up on the idea.

The brunette supposed in situations like this, she should be kind of glad to be partnered with a housemate and have a reason to interact instead of meeting awkwardly outside of class. She snapped out of her train of thought as she watched Krystal open up the Potions book, and Amelia quickly followed suit. To hear an affirmation that she had been doing good so far in the class, the eleven year old felt more confident in their partnership. A small smile strayed upon her lips as she gave the list a good once-over while listening to her partner aloud.

When asked on who should grab the ingredients, the Lovell girl quickly replied, “Oh, don’t worry! I’ve got them.” Wanting to show initiative, just like how she was always the first in class to raise her hand, the first year was going to run down to the front of the classroom where the ingredients were laid out for students to grab, but stopped short when she was handed a black band to tie her hair back. The gesture was simple, but made Amelia’s smile grow ever bigger. “Thank you, I appreciate it.” Tying her curls back rather quickly, the Raven went to grab their ingredients in a timely fashion.

Not wanting to get the first and second part of the potion mixed up, Amelia decided to grab only the first parts ingredients to begin with. Walking back up to the table where her partner was, she set the ingredients down in front of them carefully. A vial of Lethe River Water, a couple Valerian sprigs and her wand at the ready, she looked up at Krystal for the next step. “Would you like to do the first part and I’ll do the second?” While their cauldron was heating up, Amelia wondered if the two would sit in comfortable silence or if a conversation would spark.

The dark-haired girl thanked her for the gesture. She smiled at Krystal with appreciation, so Krystal gave off a small smile in return.
Amelia kindly smiled at Krystal and gave her a planned procedure of their assignment. Krystal had no problems with the idea, so she nodded her head in agreement.
"Alright."
As the cauldron was heating up, she decided to speedread through the first part of the recipe, just to get the idea what she'll be doing. Even though her hair was tied up, the ponytail would sometimes go over her shoulder because of its long length. Krystal would just patiently gently push it back as she was used to.
She noticed the brunette was looking at her and it seemed like she was thinking about something. Krystal made a short eye contact with her, before starting a conversation:
"Where are you from?"
Amelia had a normal British accent, so Krystal assumed she was English. Thinking about home, made Krystal think of her father.  He was the only family she had left and she was glad they were very connected. She missed him quite a lot, but she knew he was proud of her by going to Hogwarts. She would write him as many times as possible, just to let him know she thinks of him. Being an independent girl hadn't meant Krystal would ever forget of her father and closest friends, which her loyal personality approved of.
She hoped she will like her experience at Hogwarts and that she will find a person she will be able to trust, even though that would take a while since her lack of trust would make Krystal pick her comrades with caution.

Amelia, at this point, had nearly forgotten all of the discomfort she had had at the beginning of the class. She chided herself softly in her head, she needn't worry so much or think too deeply into things, is what her mother always told her. She swore she could hear the echo of her mother’s voice in her head as she reprimanded herself, and that made the smile grow ever bigger. At the end of the day, the first year was glad she had ended up with Krystal.

The fellow Ravenclaw was certainly agreeable, and didn't seem to mind the spare moments of silence they had between the two of them. Amelia had almost memorized her Potions book before arriving at Hogwarts, having been amped up by her father about the subject and wanting to always be ahead of her peers. She was definitely a Ravenclaw through and through, it was plain as day to anyone. The brunette briefly wondered how a majority of her family could have been sorted into Slytherin, but then had to remember not to play into stereotypes.

Glancing back over at her partner, the Lovell girl made eye contact with her and Krystal asked, rather bluntly, where she was from. With a friendly smile still plastered on her lips, she responded "I'm from the heart of London.” Her accent was very obvious, so Amelia assumed her partner had already assumed where she was from. “And you?” It was always polite to ask the same question when making small talk, the eleven year old had learned recently.

Thinking of her home made Amelia homesick, as well. Watching the cauldron heat up, her smile faltered for only a second. At least she had two loving, supportive parents back home. There were a lot of terrible stories she’d heard from other students over the last few months of their not-so-perfect home lives, if they even had any.

Krystal noticed how the girl’s previous tension faded away. She liked her new partner so far and seeing Amelia a bit more relaxed made the white-haired girl form a small smile.
The brunette answered her question kindly and shot the same question towards Krystal.
“I’m from Norwich”
A city not everyone knew, but Krystal liked it very much. She always loved taking walks near the river or visiting the park for inspiration. She adored swimming even in colder waters, the fresh breeze in the parks, and the trees.
If Amelia would ask where it is, Krystal was already prepared to answer. Having a small talk with her partner made the waiting game easier, she noticed the cauldron heating up, but wasn’t quite ready yet. Looking at Amelia's robe, she kindly continued:
“Did you like being sorted into Ravenclaw?”
Since she didn't know Amelia that well yet, it seemed best to ask simple questions. Krystal wasn't sure where she would end up, maybe Hufflepuff because of her love for animals but Ravenclaw wasn't a bad fit for the young girl because of its value of originality and creativity, which her love of drawing could approve. She didn't really care much about where she was sorted to because the stereotypes for each house were rather unnecessary, but Krystal did like Ravenclaw so far and she hoped it would stay that way.

Smiles appeared to play on both the Ravenclaw's faces, and from an outside point of view they probably looked like they knew each other better than they did. Amelia started to grow an appreciation for being paired with strangers in class, knowing now that you might not always get paired up with someone you didn’t see eye-to-eye with. It was a hit-or-miss situation, but maybe that was where she should find fun in it. It felt like the first year learned something new every day here at Hogwarts, and not just academically. Her social skills she had lacked before were becoming more and more defined now, and she became more confident by the day.

Norwich? I've heard it's quite the beautiful place.” Although Amelia did quite a bit of traveling when she was a wee child with her parents, as she had grown older she had become more of a homebody. The brunette felt most comfortable exploring the grounds of her estate or curled up by the fire inside with a good book. Looking back on it now, the eleven year old wished she had been more places she could remember—it would have given her more to talk about than she could at the moment. Trying not to think too hard about her self-inflicted seclusion as a kid, the brunette continued to listen to her potions partner as she asked another question.

The Lovell girl was always representing her house colors, having some shade of blue adorning her outfit. Today she kept it simple, as she often did when her schedule was filled with classes, and just wore her regular school robes. Krystal’s question, she realized, was kind of a complex one. The first year contemplated it for a moment thoughtfully, and then finally gave an answer. “Yes, I actually love being sorted into Ravenclaw. It was my mother’s house.” A proud, toothy smile accompanied her expression now, joyful at the thought of her lovely mother. “But…most of my family was sorted into Slytherin, my father's house. Sometimes I wonder if the hat got ahead of himself at all.” The second the sorting hat had been placed on her head, it knew where she was going. Some other students had taken longer in consideration, though, and that had worried the Lovell girl. “How about you?” She asked in return.

"Oh, I see."
Krystal kindly commented, listening to Amelia's words. Her father was sorted into Hufflepuff and her mother was a Ravenclaw, who sadly died at Krystal's birth. She always wished to know more the black-haired woman and she liked hearing stories about her from her father. He told Krystal many times that her eyes were very similar to her mother's, and that gave the blue-orbed girl a sense of connection to the long-deceased woman. A gentle smile started forming on her lips, fixing her gaze on the floor beneath them for a few seconds, as she listened to Amelia's question.
"I like it so far. I would be satisfied with any house as long as I'm comfortable in it."
Krystal answered, fixing a few loose locks behind her ear. The Silver girl then noticed the cauldron heating up.
"Oh look, I think the cauldron is ready"
She quickly added with a white smile. Amelia was a kind girl and Krystal took a liking to her. Talking to the brunette didn't seem to be a struggle and both Ravenclaws seemed to be quite relaxed. Maybe the pair could become friends? But there was plenty of time to chat during the potion-making too, so Krystal waited for Amelia's response.
