Teetering on the Edge Solo

[font=times new roman]
There he was again, a new day, post-class and he was still lingering about trying to study as much as he could in the area of charms. Zykeal was pacing, his ivory-colored aspen wood wand within one hand, it was held head high with his elbow tucked softly against his side. The fingers of the wand hand slowly twisted his obsession through each digit like a drummer would play with their sticks, a habit that he could not shake. The other hand was holding the top of the book that rests against his forearm, elbow against his rib cage to support the heavy object as he stared down and read each word with care. There wasn't an area of charms that this young first year didn't want to excel at, it was his favorite subject after all and he wanted to perfect his craft like any master artisan would want to do.

The problem with keeping your nose stuck in a book though is that you never can see where you're going. As such, the boy didn't notice when he turned around one of the tables in the classroom that there was a pile of books rest upon one of the desks that one of the previous students had left. It was teetering upon the edge, tempting fate, but fate would have it that Zykeal would stumble passed the pile and the tip of the sleeve of his robes had caught the edge of the topmost book. Clearly it was the heaviest of the lot, it shifted the entire pile as it snagged, dragging each and every one of the stacked books along with it as it started to tip over the edge of the desk.

A slight feeling of being pulled back as his robes made contact with the books caused his eyes to flick to the disturbance, a quick flash of being yelled at crossed his mind as he saw the event play out in his mind; books fall, loud noises, people scream in surprise, professors give him detention. The unnerving thought of having to waste his time doing something like detention would paralyze Zyk at the time, it was such a waste, what he needed was more time to hone his craft, not less. As it was though, his body seemed to move with the same reaction speed that his mind was working at the time, swiftly. It was as if someone had slowed downtime as he turned to his side, the hand gracefully settling the twirl of the wand within his fingertips to the palm of his hand.

Zykeals wrist would bend, facing the teetering books that were slowly about to cascade off the top of the desk, there his natural reactions would take over and the tip of wand would trace the letter 'M' through the air in a small, but, precise movement. There would be no grand shout of a spell, like his classmates usually resorted to when they called out their spells for everyone in the world to hear, no, his incantation would be spoken softly and not to disturb the entire world with his words, "Arresto Momentum," he said, of course his pronunciation was flawless, 'ah-REST-oh
mo-MEN-tum', the hours of study he put into this subject alone was drilled through his head at night like mental flash cards.

Watching then, there would be no flash of light like most spells, but, he saw just as the books began to fall off the edge of the desk, they seemed to be in slow motion. It was actually kind of humorous to watch for him, with his wand still pointed at the stack of books to keep the spell engaged, he smiled as he set his own charms book down on the desk next to the falling pile. As he held his wand still upon the book pile, he shifted his newly free hand to the stack and slowly push them back up upon the desk, making sure they were far enough back from the ledge so that no other students would have to endure the embarrassment.

As always, Zykeal thought it was natural of him to have done such a feat with the second year spells, the prodigy wasn't boastful about such things, it was just life here at Hogwarts. Like nothing happened, after he stowed the books back up on the table, Zyk would snatch up the book he was previously holding and rest it back against his forearm, eyes fluttering across the page to find where he was in the paragraph he was reading. The fingers of his wand hand then continued, shifting the hilt from his palm and letting the wand once more resume its continuous motion throughout his pacing.

This is not to apply for the spell. It's mere practice and testing for Zyk
