Brotherly Love Solo Finished

Adam stood back and watched his brother take aim, yet again. When Dean had invited him to come down to the Dueling Club for some practice, Adam had pictured more....well, dueling. Unfortunately, Dean's idea of practice had ended up being much different. While Dean smashed apart a row of plaster vases set up on a table a few meters away, Adam's job was to magically put them back together and send them back to their original positions. It didn't help that Dean grew increasingly more impatient as his first-year brother struggled to cast the right charms. At least he was trying to keep a good attitude.

Blinking and pulling himself back from his thoughts, Adam watched as the vases burst into pieces again. Dean smiled and stepped away, looking over at his little brother. "Your turn."

Adam sighed. "Where did you even get these things in the first place? I'm assuming Gryffindor doesn't just hand out practice vases to destroy."

"It doesn't matter where I got them, Adam. All that matters is that they get put back, good as new. So you'd better get on that." Dean gestured towards the vases again and Adam raised his wand, annoyed. He'd thought that going to Hogwarts would mean getting away from the control of his older brother. Apparently, he was wrong.

"Alright, alright. Calm down." Moving himself to where Dean had been standing, Adam flicked his wand through a pattern in the air and muttered the incantation to the Mending Charm. "Reparo." A few of the pieces shook, as expected, but not much else happened. It took Adam a few tries every time to get it right. Dean, as unhelpful as always, just watched impatiently, occasionally calling out unnecessary tips.

"No, Adam, that's not....it's the wrong.....it's a frickin' swirl, Adam, how hard can it be? Shouldn't you be learning this in Charms by now? Or is Blackburn slacking? Yeah, there you go, a little more confidently. There it is.....see, that wasn't so hard, was it?" A reassembled vase sat sturdily on the floor, soon joined by the rest of the row. That was the hard part. Now came something Adam actually knew how to do. He cast the Levitating Charm on each target, lifting them back to the table one by one. When he was finished, Dean pushed himself off of the wall he had found to lean on.

"Nice job, kid. We'll have you impressing Mom in no time." Adam rolled his eyes, not bothering to respond to Dean's praise, and got ready to repeat the process. Strangely, it seemed like Dean had other plans. "Hey, Adam, you can go if you want. I'll get the rest of it. Meet me back here in a few weeks?"

Adam began to protest, but Dean cut him off. "Hey, maybe I'll actually teach you some defense magic, yeah? Who knows. Now get out of here before I have to chase you up to that tower." Tuning his little brother out, Dean returned to his practice, seeming to forget Adam was there within a minute.

Walking out of the club room, Adam gritted his teeth and sighed. He got along fine with his brother, but Dean certainly didn't make it easy. At least he might get some actual work done next week. Climbing the stairs back to the Ravenclaw Common Room, Adam wondered if he should start looking into some spells on his own. He'd love to show up Dean the next time they met.
