Snowflakes and Heartbreaks  Solo   Winter 2012

Anastasia had just turned 6 years old. She couldn't believe she was so old already. Her parents had taken her to her favorite place in the world, France. It was mostly her favorite because of the yummy food. Her mother had made her learn how to order her own food in French, which was hard, since the young girl still has something of a lisp. It had been made more noticeable by her first ever loose tooth. Her father had told her not to touch it, but she couldn't help but move it with her tongue when her parents weren't looking.

It was late now. They had finished all the birthday cake and Anastasia was long supposed to be in bed. But she couldn't stop thinking about her birthday party that would be the next day, or the snow that she could see out her window. She wanted to go play in it and build snow men and make snow angels. Her mother had told her that she was getting much too old for that though. That she was supposed to be a "dignified young lady". Anastasia didn't like that.

Even the elves were sleeping. No one else was awake. The house was quiet and Anastasia just couldn't sleep! She kept wiggling around and messing with her tooth as she tried to sleep. As the six year old tossed and turned, an idea struck her. As quietly as an excited six year old could, she slipped out of bed, and padded over to her closet. She didn't want to risk turning on the lights, so she felt around for her hat and jumpers and coat. She also found two boots, although she could tell from feeling them that they weren't from the same pair. She didn't mind though. She pulled her thick socks on and fiddled her way into her outwear.

Sneaking down the stairs, she listened for any sound. Nothing. She reached the door and pulled the boots she'd been carrying on, before standing on her tip toes and unlocking to door. It was big and heavy, but she managed to push it open by throwing all of her body weight at it. She slowly closed the door behind her before hopping down the porch of their cateau (her mom had called it a "chateau", but Anastasia liked cateau better, since chat was cat in French anyway).

Her mismatched boots hit the snow, and she could see pretty well by the pale light from the full moon. One of her boots was a white rubber boot, more designed for rain, and the other was pink pink and looked more like it was designed for hiking or something. Her sweaters and hat over her nightgown were mismatched as well. Ana couldn't care less. It was snowing and there was nobody here to stop her from playing!

First, she jumped up and down until her boot prints had dented all of the previously untouched snow she could see. Then she decided to make a snowman. She didn't have a carrot or anything to make a face, so she picked at the top two buttons on her coat until they came off. Now, for a mouth and nose... She pulled off one of her mittens and stuck it in the middle of the figure's face. A big, rather green nose, but a nose nonetheless. Her bare hand was hit by the chilly wind, but she was too happy to care. She couldn't find anything for a mouth, so she resigned to drawing a smile with her bare finger. She smiled up at it. It was the first thing that was taller than her that had smiled at her in a while and it made her feel very warm and fuzzy inside to have a friend. "Why, hello there, mithtew Thnowman," she exclaimed before letting out a squeal of delight and running around her creation to take it in. "I'm going to call you Thommy."

She was irritated she couldn't say the T sound right, and so she repeated it. "Thommy. No, THommy." On her third attempt, she tried so hard she felt her tooth pop out. "Oh, noes, my toof!" she squealed before diving into the snow to dig around for the tooth. She was unsuccessful, and Tommy didn't seem to feel like helping. "Come on, Thommy, can you pleathe(please) help me. I needs my toof."

She stood and look around and then looked up at the sky. There was more snow coming down and she forgot about her tooth in favor of trying to catch snowflakes in her mouth.

The little girl had no idea how long she was out, and barely noticed the sun coming up as she continued to frolic and play in the snow. Tommy was a very good listener and was very sympathetic to how mean her parents were being. As the sun rose, she flopped in the snow to make her millionth snow angel. As she did, she felt something, grasped it in her chubby little hand, and sat up. Before she could examine her find, she heard a door open and shouts. It was her parents. "Anastasia Blair Marie Katherine Alexandra Sophia Isabella Ann Beckett!" she heard her father began before she stopped listening and turned to Tommy. "Thee, I thold you that my name is thupidly long," she hissed before her father reached her and pulled her out of the snow. "Fathew, look, I found my toof," Ana exclaimed as he picked her up and she had a chance to look at what was in her hand.

"Anastasia, I don't care about your tooth," her father said, emphasizing the th sound at the end that he was trying to make Ana learn how to say. "What were you doing? Frolicking like a some homeless person? And what did you do to your coat? Anastasia you can't do things like this." Ana stopped listening because at the moment, they were mounting the porch and Ana's tooth flew out of her hand. "Fathew, wait, my toof!" she shouted. He ignored her protests and carried her inside as she sniffed and watched the tooth flew into the white snow.

Long story short, I survived
