Learning Wizard Words

Peyton stepped into the library with the intent to learn. As much as she wanted to make new friends, she felt that there was a barrier between her and everyone else; most of them had at least some idea of what magic could do. She hoped that spending some time in the library would give her a decent foundation to work with.

She chose a random assortment of books from the shelves, mentally noting where to put them back. She set the stack onto a table, sitting in front of it. The stack was somewhat intimidating, since Peyton wasn't much of a book person, but she steeled herself and picked up the one on top.

After what felt like an eternity of skimming through pages of what seemed to be nonsense, she found her will breaking. Most of the wizard terminology sounded ridiculous, and that didn't even include the spells! They all read like bad puns and she had a hard time picturing real, all-powerful mages shouting such silly words.

But maybe it was just that book? Peyton set it aside, picking up the next one. She flipped through the pages quickly, not even trying to understand the complicated, mature writing of the work. Instead, she focused on finding wizard-specific words and spells. To her mild disappointment, it was a lot of the same. There were wildcards like 'muggle,' but almost everything fell under pun material. What does 'reparo' do? Repair. What does lumos do? Illuminate. They'd be easy to remember when she needed to know them, but they weren't cool.

She huffed in frustration, but she was at least a little more familiar with the wizarding world. Hopefully one of these books had something on their culture, though, or she'd end up with nothing but a list of puns spells she didn't know how to use. Hoping for the best, she moved onto the next book.
Learning Wizard Words
Skylar walked into the Hogwarts library, breathing in the smell of books and of ink. Most everyone already knew at least something, and despite having two older siblings, she didn’t know where to start. She looked around the library, and found only one person. The girl had dark brown hair and was dressed in the robes of a Hufflepuff. There was a stack of books in front of her and one book starting a pile next to her. She seemed very lonely, sitting there by herself reading books. Skylar decided to sit across from her and read, the girl might have something to say. Everyone had something to say, a story to tell.

Skylar looked at the title of the book she had chosen: Achievements in Charming. Lovely. There was only one thing to do now.

She opened the book, occasionally looking across the table at the brown-haired girl, who seemed to be engrossed in her own book. Wow. Okay. That was really hard to understand. Skylar was bombarded with words she didn’t know, and two she did know. Immobulus, the freezing spell, and Impervious, though she didn’t know what the last meant. She had just heard Natalia and John talking about them last summer. Maybe it was time to ask the other girl.
“Hi, I’m Skylar. What’s your name?”
