Rose fixed her eyes on the professor as they delivered their lecture as they explained all about the Levitation Charm, with the incantion, "Wingardium Leviosa!" And the famous wand movement, the swish and flick. This professor sure liked talking. She took notes in her journal as they rambled on.
Rose really wanted to get paired with her last partner, Alina Rosier. They had hit it off immediately and were really good friends.
But, to her dissapointment, she was paired up with someone else. Someone named Calvin Moore. A boy.
Rose wasn't gender-biased, but she preferred to work with someone of her own gender so this wouldn't get overly awkward. Or, like, really awkward. Or awkward at all.
Okay, maybe she was a little gender-biased.
Rose got up and went over to Calvin.
She took him in in one sweep and said in her soft, sweet voice, "Hi, I'm Rose. Rose Moon, that is. We're supposed to be working together to use the Levitation Charm on this... Plate. And then we can eat the cake on it." Rose had a strong American accent as she talked. It wasn't southern, just overall American and very strong. The cake looked really good. Like, realllly good. Rose hoped this wouldn't get awkward between them.

Calvin had tried his level best to pay attention in class. Really, he had! Charms was a subject that interested him, at least more so than some of his other courses, but the mind of an overly energetic young boy was hard to keep engaged for long periods of time. The Ravenclaw in question didn't have an attention span longer than maybe ten to fifteen minutes, which of course meant the remainder of the instructional period was dedicated to dawdling and daydreaming. It wasn't that Calvin was being disrespectful, at least not on purpose, he was just more of an active person rather than the type to stay in and patiently take notes. He only had a few interests that sparked a passion to study, and unfortunately none of the subjects Hogwarts currently offered fell into those interests, aside from Flying, but that was a given for the aspiring Quidditch star. Maybe Herbology too, that class often tiptoed near territory the boy found interesting.
As a result of his lack of focus, when the Gryffindor girl approached him, Calvin snapped to attention, nearly falling out of his chair in surprise. He listened carefully as she introduced herself, furrowing his brows a bit as he noticed the unfamiliar accent. Rose might've well been the first American sounding person he'd ever heard speak, and it was a bit bewildering at first. Still, he got the gist of her introduction, and in turn gave his own. The boy's voice was colored with a very typical Geordie accent, strong, but not intelligible. It marked him from being from the Newcastle area in England, if Rose recognized the accent of course. "Oh, right cool. Name's Calvin Moore, you can call me Cal if you'd prefer." He was grateful for the explanation of what was going on in class, but he didn't let on.
The young Ravenclaw cared little for any sort of gender bias. He was an earnest boy, not the type to tease girls for 'cooties' or anything of the sort. Calvin grew up with two little sisters, and as a result he'd never even dream of doing anything other than be kind. "Let's get this show on the road, then. Do you want to go first?" For the most part, Cal was hoping for a demonstration of sorts from Rose, since he'd paid little attention in class. Once again, though, he didn't let on. He was the only one who needed to know that he was struggling with the rather simple task of, well, listening to an instructor while they spoke.

"Okay, then... Cal," Rose replied. Calvin had a strange accent, one she had never heard before. It slightly prodded at her curiosity to ask him, but she supposed there would be plenty of time to do that later, once they had finished the charm.
Calvin suggested she go first, so she did. She found a spot where she could angle at her cake and cast the spell with nobody in the way and glanced back at Calvin to check he was there and watching.
Man, did those cakes look good.
Rose shrugged. "Mkay," she muttered to herself. She pointed her wand at the plate under the cake she was given and Drew in a deep breath, saying, "Wingardium Leviosa!" And flicked her wand before swishing it. The cake and the plate it was sitting on did nothing, which wasn't the worst result of doing the charm incorrectly. She realized she had been really tense and forced herself to relax. "So, it didn't do anything." Rose turned to Calvin. "Which is better than it exploding or something. I've heard this Enunciation of this incantation is really hard, so I did a little pre-class practice on the incantation... I think I said it correctly. Did you catch anything I did wrong?" the perfectionist in her clearly shone through in that moment, and it was also clear as crystal she was disappointed in herself for not getting it right.
