Elspeth stretched her arms out above and behind her head a bit, her toes pointing and stretched toward the floor. She'd been sitting at this desk in a corner of the library for a few hours now, reading and re-reading a passage about Gamp's Law in Magical Theory. The space around her was filled with other, equally stressed and burnt out students getting ready for the first major exams of the year before Winter Break. Earlier she could have sworn she heard someone crying in the stacks just behind where she was seated, but hadn't looked for fear it would trigger her own breakdown.

Studying for exams was a new thing for Elspeth. While her mother had homeschooled her, tests hadn't really been a part of the teaching methodology. Instead, she'd been expected to complete some kind of task or project or something that had to do with what she was learning (one of her fondest memories being when she learned fractions and had to bake a cake using a recipe her dad had made with a series of odd math equations in place of simple measurements). Sitting down and going over facts in a draft room felt less productive and more like a kind of slow mental anguish to her. The information would go in through her eyes, drip out her ears, and suddenly she'd be looking a diagram of food transfiguration that made absolutely no sense to her and she'd start the process over. Lather, rinse, repeat. It was hardly the exciting, adventurous life of a young witch that she'd often pictured as a smaller child - running around fighting trolls in locked corridors or stopping evil Slytherins from kidnapping the DADA professor.

A large yawn sprang out of her mouth unexpectedly and a nearby upperclassman looked over and gave her a dirty looking scowl, as if she'd slapped them across the face. Elspeth's eyes grew wide before she stuffed her nose back into the book. Stray coughs echoed through the bookshelves on occasion, but otherwise the library was incredibly still and tense. What she really wanted, more than anything, was something that would help her relax a little bit. A chance to run around outside in the snow, or curling up by the fire in the common room while listening to the radio. Instead she proceeded to tap her foot incessantly under the desk and try to feign ignorance when people looked her way.
It should be noted that while food cannot be outright created from nothing, it can be multiplied if one already has some food to multiply, it can be enlarged or the food can be summoned if one knows the approximate location and is fairly sure the food will still be there...
She pushed her feet against the wooden floor, sliding them a little along the smooth surface just for the hard feedback she'd get in her legs. Her head flopped backwards a little, as she gave up trying to hold it up, and she found herself staring at the ceiling. The Hogwarts library was a bit of an enigma to her, so early in her first year still. Books seemed to be stacked up so high there was no way she could imagine anyone being able to get them down (though, sporadically, a copy would zoom off a shelf through the air and toward the reference desk where a librarian had accio'd it to put on a hold shelf). The dark wooden shelves felt almost alive, like they'd stood watch over the generations of students who'd come before her. Why won't you tell me how to pass my test, oh wise bookshelves, Elspeth thought sarcastically, there must have been students who came here that were worse at this than me. How'd they do it?

Before she could get her answer, though, it seemed as if someone had walked up behind her-

Ever since the winter exams had been announced, Lucille felt like being a Ravenclaw immediately made people think you always had to get O's, which, in this little eagle's case, was defiantly not true. During the start of the term Lucille could barely get through with an E average, which once again made her question
The Almighty Sorting Hat's decision. On this particular day, Lucille had an extra sense of determination however, thanks to that the young witch found her way to the library, not to just browse, but to actually study for her upcoming (read: nightmares)exams. While on the search for a book on potions, Lucille recognized a slightly familiar face sitting at one of the study tables. "What was her name again? "The little witch thought, as Lucille searched her brain for a name that would fit the other girl's face. "Was it Ellie? No... Elsa? Defiantly not..Oh yes! Its Elspeth!"Lucile thought to herself a little to excitedly."Maybe we could try to study together..."The girl thought silently .Although she'd be quite embarrassed to say this, it did take a bit of a while for the Ravenclaw to gather enough courage for the task ahead. While keeping the hope of a kind study partner in mind, Lucille finally tapped the other Ravenclaw on the shoulder as she began to speak; "Oh-Uhm..hi-llo! I was s-sort of wondering if we could study t-together or something."The witch asked with an awkward grin on her face .Before she could tell if Elspeth actually noticed or not, Lucille couldn't help but feel like she had made a mistake in trying to ask for help."Why do I even try? "She asked herself in miserable silence.
