It was quite easy to say that Rafael despised Slytherins.
After all, the whole lot of them were awful creatures, in the way that they spread their dirty, revolting tendrils of hate about the endless facets of the school, choking out all hope for coexistence among the houses. It was more than obvious from the beginning that the house would be cursed with bad eggs – Salazar Slytherin was more than obviously a vile man, his mannerisms revolting and decisions ill-willed to that of the other founders of the school. Was it all that surprising, that his house would be cursed with evil tendencies as well? Perhaps it was all in the eye of the beholder, perhaps the Slytherins weren’t as bad as they were spoken to be. After all, the Houses of Hogwarts had proven to be quite interesting, in the way that some students acutely broke the stereotypes. Who was the young Captain, to subject an innocent to the stereotypes of one’s species?
One of those lovely flukes of the sorting hat, happened to be the lovely Flash Holmwood.
Rafael couldn’t exactly say he knew the Slytherin all that well – after all, they had just met – but there were some things about a person that stood out, traits that one could easily define from simple conversation. One of those traits the young child had quite easily identified, was the snake child’s inexplainable kindness towards him, specifically in the owlery, when his fingers were numb and lifeless. It was true, there weren’t many people Rafael could say would do what Flash had done for him – none, probably, at Hogwarts, no one so far. It was rather cute as well, the wariness his fellow first year exhibited regarding his singing talents, a voice that was admittingly quite lovely to the ears. The kid was quite the vocal prodigy, that much was starkly evident, no words were necessary to justify that fact. The idea of him being shy, unconfident in his own abilities and wary to share his talent, it was odd, disheartening in a way. Why was he so reluctant? Had someone told him differently about his voice? Was he oblivious? Shy around compliments?
Perhaps he’d find out. After escaping from the chilly confines of the owlery, the young child had [without physical action] dragged his new acquaintance along to what was most likely his favorite place in the interior of Hogwarts. The Rehearsal Room, at first glance, was bare of outsider life, and thankfully so – as nervous as the Gryffindor was about performing and shattering the illusion of the sports jock he proudly wore about him, he could only imagine Flash’s reluctance towards performing in front of other people. It was just better this way. At second glance, one would shortly take notice of the lovely scenery – the room smelled of must, the comforting kind that calmed ones senses, the black Steinway & Sons piano standing proudly in the middle of the room, seat tucked neatly beneath it, hiding from the dust that gently fell from the ceiling over time. Additional instruments lie idly about the room, some stringed, some shiny and brass, all crowding the large room with their grandeur and musical possibility. The room was just… right, in a way the young Captain couldn’t quite put his finger on. He idly wondered what Flash’s take on the room was, in that moment, a vain thought that fluttered across the folds of his mind in a split-second. Did he think of the must in the same way the Gryffindor did? Did he take pleasure in gazing upon the manifold instruments littering the floors?
The young Captain wouldn’t consider such a thought for long, instead opting to turn towards his acquaintance, eyes soft as a bright look crossed his face, teeth glinting as his eyes sparkled with excitement. “Here we are,” he spoke kindly, taking a moment to strip off his snow-covered overcoat, dropping it onto the floor in one short movement and kicking it off to the side, out of the way. With that, he extended his arms, as if showing off the room – he couldn’t be sure if the other boy had journeyed to the Rehearsal Room as of yet, but either way, he would exhibit his love for the area with all the energy he could muster. “The Rehearsal Room,” he proclaimed, words that could be taken as a statement as much as an introduction. “What do you think? Was I misguided in bringing you here?” An idle comment, mostly rhetorical, though open for answering, he supposed. His eyes glanced down at his shoes in that moment, and he shrugged, almost shyly. “Anyways. I hope this is okay. Kinda quiet in here, empty.” Good for playing music – though, he wouldn’t state it out loud. Hopefully Flash got the point. And, even more importantly, hopefully the Slytherin wasn't miffed at his choice of locations.
OOC • @Jack Burnett just for clarification, this would be the thread in which your character would learn of Flash and Rafa's ability to sing.
I probably haven't collected my allowance yet.

Birds of a Feather

After they had entered the castle, Flash followed diligently behind Rafael as they continued to ascend flight after flight of stairs. Flash had taken the time to investigate the castle and plot it out in his head the best he could so he had a vague idea of the rooms around him at any given time. Guess as he might, the thought hadn’t landed on the obvious answer. Perhaps in trying too hard to understand Rafael’s intention, he had glossed over the simple explanation: that he simply had wanted to continue to share their mutual passion for music. The rehearsal room, a place Flash knew about but never went to.Backdated: February 13th, 2020

Flash needed to relax. He wasn’t used to someone showing an interest in him, let alone pulling him along to show him something. He couldn’t say he deserved it, part of him wanted to come out and say something harsh to break the illusion, like ‘You shouldn’t trust me’ or ‘Don’t waste your kindness on someone like me’, but the words didn’t come. Was he being selfish for allowing him to treat him like another normal student? No, this was fine, this was normal. Relax... He had to let himself indulge for now, he didn’t know how long it would be before it was all over anyway.
Once he opened the door, the room lay empty before them. It was later in the evening on a Thursday, who knew what all the students were getting up to at that hour, but certainly not practicing. It was clear with one sweep of the eyes that it was a well-travelled room. Large, almost surprisingly so, and a noticeable change in acoustics, even notable simply through the creaking of the door and the sound of their footsteps. Without the sound of people or music, the echoing silence was almost deafening.
He knew how these sorts of places were, as short as his life had been at that point. His mother had been invested in seeing whether he took interest in any musical instruments, since learning music was a disciplined art. After she had given him a tour of the backstage of some sort of university’s symphonic orchestra practice hall, she was disappointed when Flash took interest in the drums rather than something more refined. She was hardly going to buy him a drum set so he could start a racket that could be heard down the halls of the mansion. His interest in music was summarily tossed aside.
Flash was so caught up in taking in the details around him that he was almost startled to hear Rafael’s voice again, bouncing off the carefully sculpted ceiling like the instrument it was. He introduced the room, for what it was worth, and asked whether it had been an appropriate choice. Once Flash turned his attention to him, he saw that he was wearing a big smile, almost like a grin, opening his arms up and showing the room off as though he was proud of it. The sight gave Flash reason to smile himself, nodding along happily. He was starting to feel more relaxed already, Rafael’s genuine and boisterous attitude was a delight to experience. Whatever appraisal he had given Flash, he at least acted comfortable. It was a nice change of pace to his usual acquaintances.
He continued, shrugging and remarking on its relative emptiness. A point he was trying to make, no doubt, about the reason he brought him there. Flash clasped his hands, squeezing pressure into his fingers to relieve some of his nervousness. Rehearsal rooms had a quite unambiguous function. Had Rafael really been enamored enough by his singing to be inspired to take him there? Well, either way, he was there now. He wasn’t about to leave just because of the threat of having to sing more. Rafael had heard him singing in a way no one else really had-- the way he could only sing when he was sure no one else was listening. Nothing could be more embarrassing than that. And besides, he wasn’t finished basking in Rafael’s radiant smile.
”Do you plan on showing me some of your talent already?” Flash hoped he was in for a show rather than a performance of his own, he was quite curious, after all. He wondered if Rafael’s voice was trained, like he assumed Flash’s was. It had potential to be something remarkable... or tragic, if it turned out he was wretched at it after all that talk. Either way, it was what Flash was owed. ”I would be much obliged.”
Seeing that Rafael had already taken off his outer layer, Flash followed suit. He, however, placed his coat and scarf gently down on a chair nearby. The snow on the shoulders had melted into a thin layer of moisture, but it wasn’t any more than the chair could handle. All the while, a contented smile stayed fixed on his face.
