Gerald settled on the Courtyard floor, leaning his back against one of the grey stone columns that enclosed the space. He pulled a thin paperback out of his robe’s inside pocket and placed it on his lap. The tome in question, ‘A Small Book of Jocular Jinxes’, had been a birthday present from his father, Leander, who knew full well his son would never dare use it as a manual of instructions to wreak havoc among fellow students, but would think of it as a fairly fun read.

As a matter of fact, Gerald was so into the book, that, for the last fifteen minutes, he had been walking around the castle in search of some calm and quiet to read. The Slytherin Common Room was currently amidst some sort of Quidditch celebration and the noise was unbearable; focusing was pretty much impossible there. Eventually, he had reached the Courtyard, unusually empty given the sunny weather that warmed the Scottish Highlands, and thought it made a good enough spot for him to sit down.

Gerald flipped through the pages eagerly, stopping on a nose-enlargement jinx which included a rather comical drawing displaying the hex’s result when applied to a human face. The boy chuckled softly, went through the incantation’s explanations and moved on to the next one.

At the sudden sound of robes swishing by, he lifted his gaze from the book. A brunette girl was approaching the Courtyard through one of the ample corridors connected with it. After a double take, he recognized her as a first year Hufflepuff he shared Potions class with.

What’s her name? He bit the inside of his mouth in thought, eyeing her discreetly as she entered the roof-less square that was the Courtyard. Linda? Lindsey?

Because it would have been rude not to acknowledge her, Gerald gave the girl a nod as she walked past him.

“How is it going?” he said, not so much a genuine question but rather polite, empty talk.

Lindsey walked quickly through the grounds, holding her textbooks. Her last lesson was over, and she’s now heading to the Owlery to send a letter to her family.
It’s November, and in Scotland the weather had already turned chilly. The Hufflepuff girl suddenly sneezed. Pretty cold here. She thought, hastened towards the castle.
It’s been great for Lindsey so far, having met some new friends and teachers. They spent a merry time together, chatting and going on adventures.
Well, in fact, she’s making friends with everyone——at least trying.
Lindsey’s definitely not a social butterfly, nor a wall flower. She’s sort of between the two sides and so far it worked quite well for her.
She’s now reaching the castle. Suddenly, Lindsey saw a familiar face that belonged to a blonde Slytherin boy. The boy’s reading a book on the courtyard floor, seemed pretty pleasant.
Hmm, where have I seen him? She wondered.
Potions. Lindsey soon remembered.
Hufflepuffs and Slytherins had Potions class together.
So his name is…? Lindsey searched the name in her head. Sadly, no result had came up.
I do think it starts with G or something…George? Gerry? She thought carelessly.
Lindsey was considering if she’d talk to this boy. Chatting to others without knowing their names seemed rude to her, and it’s bad to interrupt when people are reading——she had the exact experience.
Shall I start the conversation? She thought uncertainly, without noticing the fact that she’s reaching the Slytherin.
To the young badger’s surprise, the boy raised up his head and nodded to her. “How is it going?”
“Um, hello…I’m fine these days.” She nodded back and replied with a bit nervousness.
“My name’s Lindsey and it’s really nice to meet you…” Lindsey quickly added. She’s not sure if the boy still remembered her name.
“And…sorry but what’s your name please——Mr.G?” She thought for a while, but a last decided to add Mr.G——she’s pretty sure the boy’s first name started with “G”.
Although this seemed a lot more polite, Lindsey knew that she looked really stupid. REALLY.

'And... sorry but what's your name please — Mr. G?'

Gerald couldn't help but raise a brow at Lindsey. He wasn't annoyed at her not knowing his name, of course; he had just learned hers, after all. It was an amused sort of expression that settled on his face.

"Mr. G?" he echoed, closing the book on his lap, sliding it into his robe's pocket; the uneven cobblestone floor was starting to hurt the back of his thighs and he supposed having a conversation with a standing person while sitting down was pretty awkward, anyway. He got on his feet, shook the dust from his trousers.

"That's one decent nickname, I guess," he thought out loud, voice serious although his lips were unmistakably quirked into a grin. Stifling a chuckle, he decided he didn't want to mess with her further; her big, light eyes looked kind enough and he could tell her words were genuinely innocent. "I prefer Gerald, though."

A grumble from above made the blonde kid blink in surprise. Heavy, black clouds approached from both the East and the West and, apparently, were bound to meet and crash on top of the castle's towers. Guessed the Scottish autumn was once again hijacking what until then had been a perfectly sunny day.

His eyes fell back on Lindsey. For a second, Gerald pondered whether to make a comment about the imminently foul weather, but ultimately decided against it; even his occasionally stuck-up self wasn't that lame.

Gerald glanced towards the practically empty corridor by the Courtyard; he didn't really feel like getting caught in the forming storm and curfew was getting close, as well. On the other hand, excusing himself and stepping out of a conversation which had barely started could come off as pretty tasteless. And so he carried on talking.

"Late evening errand left to run?" he inquired, shifting his weight onto his left foot.

Gerald.
Lindsey tried her best to remember this handsome name. She liked it, cause it’s far more better than George or Gerry——just using them for examples!
“Late evening errand left to run?” Gerald inquired.
“Um, not much really——just a letter for my cousin. It’s pretty late so maybe I’ll just send it tomorrow.” Lindsey raised the letter in her hand. “So, free tonight——at least I think so.” she added.
Lindsey’s really interesting in the boy in front of her. This blonde boy seemed pretty nice and friendly. She hadn’t met many Slytherins before and would love to know one——a friendly one.
She hoped to talk to Gerald more.
But what should she say?
Ah, Potions! Lindsey suddenly remembered.
They’ve met on the Potions class, haven’t they?
“Um, how’s your class so far? What’s your favorite subject?” She asked. “Mine’s probably Potions——at least it’s my best now. But, well, I really hate those worms using in it.” She thought for a while, and finally added.
“Charms and Transfiguration are not bad either. I think they’re quite interesting however I got an A for my first charms class so you know——I’ve got to work hard.” Lindsey smiled, and shrugged her shoulders.
“You’re doing well?” She said.
Charms was a fascinating subject but Lindsey got a bit shocked after getting an A. Oh dear. She thought at that time. Lindsey didn’t expect much on Potions before however it turned out great for her. It’s interesting isn’t it? Sometimes our expectations are not like the reality. There even might be a twist.
She kept thinking this, and waited for Gerald’s reply.
It’s getting dark and Lindsey finally felt that she had been standing for a while. It’s nothing for her really but she just had Herbology (kept standing throughout the class) and felt quite exhausted. As a result, she said down beside Gerald on the floor of the courtyard.

Gerald merely nodded at Lindsey's response to his question. She was right. It was probably too late to send an owl. The heavy, storm clouds had darkened the sky and light was starting to fade in the Courtyard.

'How's your class so far? What's you favorite subject?'

"Potions is the one I like best," he said without hesitation and gave a small smile when she said it was hers too.

Gerald's love for potion making was not something Hogwarts had introduced him to. It dated at least a few years back. At home, he kept an entire shelf for guides and manuals on brewing, as well as box filled with vials and common ingredients.

"I like Charms, too," he agreed. "Transfiguration, maybe not so much."

That being said, the blonde boy leaned back on the stone column and sort of sat himself on the protuberant edge that circled its lower section.

'You're doing well?'

Gerald considered her question for a second. Was she referring to school or to life in general? Not that the answer would vary much from one another, but he thought it would have been good to know.

"I'm alright," he replied. "I could with a bit less homework, but I can't really complain."

Gerald checked his watch; discreetly, that is, for he didn't wish to come off as if he wanted to get out of there. Curfew was getting close and the first drops of rain were beginning to fall.

"You're fine, too?" he spoke, feeling that not returning her question might have been impolite. "You look fairly happy, I have to say,"

“You're fine, too? You look fairly happy, I have to say.” Gerald said.
Yeah, she was.
“Hmm, yes——I guess it’s just because the Hufflepuffs are all really nice and dinner here is——literally great…” Lindsey replied childishly. “Don’t laugh at it——I really think so.” She added, smiling.
She had seen Lizzie, her Gryffindor lion (Lindsey called her friend like this) wolfing down loads of food in the morning. And so did she.
Lindsey loved the steak, the chicken, ice cream and pies on the dinner table. The food in her family was delicious, too, but in Hogwarts, there’re more types to choose——great for a foodie like her.
It’s getting dark now. Lindsey would love to continue her talk with Gerald, but it’s near the time of curfew. Also, rain drops started falling——Lindsey grew up in Kensington, and knew what did this mean. It would change into drizzling soon——then maybe even a heavy rain? She didn’t know.
“Hey Gerald——” Lindsey suddenly said, which seemed a bit awkward. “It would be time of curfew soon and I guess we’ll spend another rainy night at Hogwarts——so I think we’ve got to go back to our dormitories now.” She continued with pity.
Oh…if she had met him earlier…then they must have a great talk. She said to herself.
