Dear Nightingale,

First of all, I would like to formally apologize for lack of convenience on your end. While I suppose I am a busy fellow, I truly hope that doesn’t prevent people such as yourself from talking to me. I’m always available, should you have questions or interest in the Quidditch world, or anything beyond such a topic. Please feel free to approach me anytime you wish!

Your words are quite kind! To be honest, no, I don’t hear that very often. I suppose it’s due to the environment in which I preside – who’s to say you’re a brilliant player, when each one of your team members are of equal skill? I find your observations quite intriguing, and am left to wonder who it is that has supposedly viewed so many of my games. To answer your inquiries, no, I’d never even flown on a broom before this year. However, that isn’t to say I haven’t ‘played’ before. Perhaps it is my sports background that is a contributing factor to my aptitude at the sport, or perhaps it’s the countless hours I’ve logged in trying to perfect the many maneuvers in the playbook, but it seems as if I’ve caught up with my fellow players. As for going pro, perhaps one day. However, I haven’t given such things much thought.

Do I look tense? I suppose I’ve never noticed such things. To be completely honest, this school year has been quite stressful, for reasons I don’t really need to state due to their blatant clarity. Perhaps you know of the Umbridge Murder, and the mysterious rumors going about the school? I find it quite amusing, that you find my smile to be appealing. I can’t say I’ve heard that, either. That’s quite kind of you to say.

I’ll admit, this is definitely the first letter of this sort that I’ve received. However, that isn’t to say that your acquaintance isn’t lovely in its own, mysterious sort of way. I wish I could formally meet the writer of such a lovely message. However, if it’s privacy that you value, I suppose I should respect your wishes. That being said, might you spare me at least spare me a few tidbits of sweet information, as to satiate my curiosity? What about yourself? I’m very interested to learn more about you, Nightingale.

Sincerely,

Dear Nightingale,

You have absolutely nothing to apologize for. I, too, have been suffering from some strange inability to see to anything other than my own thoughts.

It sucks that there has to be a social ladder, doesn’t it? I mean, why can’t we all just be on the same level for once? To be honest, I… haven’t fully realized nor exercised my so-called ‘popularity’. I guess most of the shit I pull has little to do with being loved or appreciated. A lot of the most important men and women in the world never get recognition for what they do, while other men decidedly build their empires upon lies and the talents of others. What I’m trying to get at, is that status is artificial. This is coming from a person that understands a different kind of ladder – a financial one, if you will. If I only manage to gain a few meaningful friends and end up pissing off everyone else at this school, isn’t that better than being superficial friends with everyone? Maybe people do gravitate towards me, I haven’t really payed that much attention. What I do know, is that I sure as hell hope I’m approachable to those I don’t know. You might see a ladder… I see a bridge. Isn’t that what the hippies are saying these days? I don’t know. You seem like a pretty cool person – which goes to show, perhaps popularity isn’t everything. Some people talk for the sake of attention. Some people don’t talk because they’re waiting for the right thing to say.

Back to the Quidditch conversation – Like I said previously, my skills are nothing to marvel at. In comparison to an entire team full of widely-skilled players, perhaps my abilities on the field mean little in the scheme of things. However, perhaps the game’s not necessarily about the amount of skill one possesses, as much as its about working as a team. With the right combination of people and brooms, think of the damage one could do on the field? I mean have you seen Charlie Woodward play? That kid’s never touched a Quaffle before and he made a few killer plays last Quidditch Game. AJ and Marla are unstoppable. Gris, Wren, and my cousin are also excellent offense – I wasn’t around to watch, but apparently Ariana managed a novel assault on Reid, Hufflepuff’s prized beater. Can you imagine that? Hugh and Pierre played amazingly this season as well. It will be a shame to see the big guy go, even if he wasn’t the biggest fan of my strategic methods. And where would we be without Lamik and Evelynn? Well – Eve’s annoying as hell, but at least she knows what she’s doing. Somewhat. And I would be lying if I said she wasn’t a decent seeker as well. Lamik, I as a student am absolutely honored to have playing for our team. That guy’s going places. But I’m getting off track. A team that’s on eleven different pages isn’t much of a team. Yeah, our seekers didn’t catch anything this game. It’s true, that we’re still trying to figure ourselves out. But all of our ranks are filled with highly talented individuals. I have no doubt we are going to dominate next year.

Statistics… that’s quite the unique interest! Not in a derogatory way, of course. How do you manage to properly comprehend numbers? If I’m as well-known as you say I am, I’m sure you’re aware of my shortcomings in the academic department. It’s quite incredible, to hear of someone who properly enjoys looking at numbers. What’s that like? How do you even sort through all the information, or make sense of it? That must be a right talent!

The Blossom Ball… I wish I could forget that particular event. Yes, I did attend – created quite the scuffle, too, if I remember correctly. Everything at this damned school is just so wrong. You’ve heard about the witnesses, right? About what they did at the Ball? Nothing about any of this fits. I know there’s more going on, some kind of conspiracy in our midsts that I can’t… quite put my finger on. As for details regarding recent findings… I’m afraid that I’m a bit more reluctant to share these, due to possible interceptions via owl, or something along those lines. I hope you’ll pardon me – trust is a bit difficult to muster these days, and my name isn’t as secretive as yours. I will tell you, though, that we Lions hadn’t managed to discover a secret cache… whatever a cache is. In fact, upon searching our common rooms, we didn’t manage to find anything that interesting, other than a few odd tapestries and rumors from the portraits regarding Potter’s reason for coming to Hogwarts. Small tidbits of information, yes, but still important in the scheme of things. Just not enough to prove Vladimir’s guilt or shine a light on what’s really going on.

God… I don’t get a lot of compliments. I mean, objectively, I guess my face isn’t horrible? It’s just the ‘friends’ thing again – I have a handful that are just really close to me. Really, really close. No crushers? I hope? There’s only one person to have ever paid me romantic interest, and I’m not convinced it’s withstanding. I really screwed up with her. Which I guess is okay, romance is overrated, is it not? I wish I could repay the compliment, but once again, I’m afraid I don’t have a face to put to your lovely pseudonym. Suppose I’ll have to assume for a moment that your features match your personality on paper.

I suppose what you say is relatable, to an extent. I’ve never really maintained owl contact with anyone before you. Not going to lie, it feels sort of unnatural – like with every word I put in ink, I give up a part of myself. Not that you’ll find a lot of personal stuff in here, but if you could… keep to yourself what you find in these letters? If only to give me inner peace? Otherwise, talking to you is rather enjoyable. Menial conversation is difficult to find these days even among friends. With every part of myself that I release into the void, I feel lighter. It’s the strangest thing. Perhaps one day a psychologist will be able to explain the motive behind my emotions, but for now, I’ll take it.

Being away from close family that long… isn’t easy. Do you enjoy living with your mom? Where in England do you live, if I may ask? Liverpool is nice this time of year, isn’t it? I personally live with my aunt and uncle in Barking, a subset of Eastern London. Not that I don’t have good parents or anything – they’re usually just busy doing adult stuff. My mom works in the palace pretty much all the time, so the few times she’s around, she’s usually exhausted. My dad, on the other hand, works in Muggle Relations. He comes home a few times, usually late, but he never really seems ‘home’. Our family and my uncle’s family share a house, since no one’s ever home. It’s pretty cool, the sun’s surprisingly sunny in Barking, as opposed to the doom and gloom of the typical London air. You should totally check it out sometime over the summer, if you get home. My aunt owns a restaurant somewhere or other.

I bet seeing your horse will be nice! To be honestly, I’ve never properly considered horseback-riding. The idea of riding on a living, breathing animal… that admittedly takes courage. What kind of riding do you do? What kind of horse is Cassie? I’ll be honest, I know little about the matter, but I’d be more than willing to research it.

I think a set of questions seems like a nice idea. Will list a few below!
  • Tell me about your horseback riding!
  • Do you have a favorite Hogwarts Team? Who are they and why?
  • What region of England might you live? You might just be close to me.
  • If I may ask – what house are you?
  • Do you have a pet? If not, what kind of pet would you want?
I hope I haven't scared you away by now. Looking forward to hearing back from you sometime!

Sincerely,

Dear Nightingale,

I will begin my letter with an extension of my deepest apologies – school has been quite hectic as of late. Our letters had quite embarrassingly slipped my mind. It was never my intention to disregard our conversations.

Having had some time to ponder our conversation regarding the social ladder, I suppose I can relate to your argument, at least to a certain degree. To me, the ladder will always be a little silly – I mean, take it from someone who’s been just about everywhere on the ladder in terms of money and popularity. The statistics will always change with the times, but they never change who you are. At least, they shouldn’t. Anyways, you do have a point in saying that popularity will provide wiggle room in the right situations. This is not so much the case for me, however – I don’t get along with the teachers very well at all, for instance, and a good portion of my classmates don’t really appreciate my brash actions and opinions. In this regard, my ‘popularity’ and ‘fame’ don’t get me very far, save for Quidditch discussions, and occasionally a favor from a starry-eyed first year. Most upperclassmen are regarded with awe at some point in their stay at Hogwarts, courteous of the younger ones, so I’m not that special in that way.

Furthermore, status also offers the stress of expectation – for instance, think of a well-known singer on the muggle radio. I’m sure you can imagine the pressure they may face when composing a new album or going out in public and facing those they cater to. Popularity in school is a lot like this, if not on a smaller scale. People expect me to serve my house well in Quidditch or use my Gryffindor ‘bravery’ to get myself and others out of sticky situations. Even more of my classmates expect me to break noses and collect detentions. (Although I would like to proudly note that I have yet to experience a detention during my stay at Hogwarts.) It kind of pisses me off a little, because these rumors and evaluations made of me by nosy onlookers aren’t in the least who I am. People like drama, so of course they enjoy my shortcomings. In this regard, I don’t really feel all that inclined to entertaining people because they think I have a pretty face or flashy personality. I just kind of want to do my thing, if that makes sense. If people watch, they watch. That’s where my concern for pretenses end.

Moving on to other topics, though I suppose this one’s somewhat connected to the initial one. Attention’s not that great. I’m sure your mother’s given you the ‘good and bad’ attention conversation at some point? If not, you can look it up over the summer or something. Anyways, my point in bringing it up is, it takes a lot of energy to receive attention – at least, in my experience – so if you’re going to receive it from anyone, wouldn’t you rather receive it from someone who amuses you equally? Or I don’t know, just makes you feel happy when you’re around them? I mean. Of course, that’s not what friends are for in the long run, but what kind of friend makes you feel shitty horrible about yourself every time you’re around them?

And, if we’re still talking about friends. I’m glad you’ve stumbled upon that revelation. Have you found anyone in the time since we’ve talked? I mean, yeah, there are plenty of reasons that being alone might be better. But like. Being alone is so lonely. Wow, that was so eloquent. Okay, but before you grab your pitchfork and come at me 0_0, just – take it from someone who literally could not leave their house for three years. Being alone is really, really not good for you. And it doesn’t really matter if it’s selective isolation, does it? Because you still miss out on the social skills and general excitement of having people around you. I mean, this is going to sound kind of pointed, so please don’t think I’m coming at you when I say this. I’d noticed this further down in your letter, when you’d made a contrast between numbers and people – don’t you think saying ‘having friends is stupid’ is just… an excuse for you being too scared to make them? I won’t pry, because it’s really not my place. We can leave the topic here if you’d like, or you can just ignore my statement altogether.

Okay, moving on to lighter topics – to defend my previous claims regarding Gryffindor’s performance in the Quidditch Games, I’m happy to report to you that our season this year is going quite swimmingly! We’ve won both of our games albeit narrowly, in some cases! (cue the party music 😊) Now, Hufflepuff’s going to be a tough one to beat – I don’t think a victory’s out of the question, though, given our lead and the practices we’ve been putting in. Our new roster really knows how to fight for a win. Although, I’m sure if you’ve been following the games, you know this well! (As for Evelynn – I will not try to defend my actions against my co-captain. Yes, I’m being petty as fuck hell, but she just does that to me. As long as we’re keeping things professional during practices and games, we should be fine.)

To be honest, I haven’t been focusing on the previous ball’s drama all that much over the past few months. Part of me has just selectively forgotten about it all – though I probably have a notebook stashed away somewhere with plenty of information regarding my findings. Perhaps I could gift it to you or something. I’m reluctant to put such information in a letter, however, where it can be readily available to anyone – if a message can be decoded by you, surely in the hands of a more capable adult a lot of damage could be wrought. (This is not meant to offend you – my supposition is that you’re quite smart! You asked further down in your letter what I made of your house situation… if anything, I’d say you’re a Ravenclaw. You may laugh, because I’m probably wrong. You haven’t made guessing very easy!)

Okay, okay. I’m just gonna say it. I’m sure you’ve noted by now that I’m not exactly a people-pleaser. Crushes just stress me out, because, you know, here’s someone opening up to you about their feelings and sometimes you just… can’t reciprocate them. I’m not the type to lead someone on. But I know if I were in their shoes, I would hate myself for being rejected. Rejection universally sucks. At least, it should. Actually, on that tangent – If we’re talking about crushes, I’m curious. You obviously didn’t have a crush at the time of your last letter – and whether you do now is really none of my business. But surely you have a preference, right? Girls or boys? I mean, physically? Mentally? Like, what would the perfect partner look like to you? (I’m only asking because I always hear it from my sister’s friends whenever they come over. Hearing what other people are into can get quite entertaining – though, if it’s not something you wish to talk about, I understand.)

Is London nice? I guess so, if you’re into that sort of thing. To be honest, I haven’t seen much of it outside of Barking. It’s prettier that Buenas Aires, in some ways. A lot cleaner, a little colder – and the weather’s always a bit ugly, but that may just be my weather snob talking. I miss tropical weather, not gonna lie. Objectively, it’s not the worst place over the pond. As for my mom – no, she’s not really supposed to talk about what goes on around the palace. She’s a staff manager, anyways, so she doesn’t really get involved that much with actual political matters, so there’s not much to talk about, I guess? She just makes sure there’s food in the pantry and that everyone’s doing their job the right way. Takes inventory on the artifacts, you know, that stuff. I think she likes her job, though, despite her not sharing that much.

Sheesh, I don’t know how you get the courage to maneuver an animal like that. I mean – yeah, it’s not got jagged teeth or claws, but. How do people learn to ride horses, anyways? I can imagine it’s a lot harder than broom work, as in the sky you’re relying on your own skill rather than that of the horse as well. I don’t know that much about horses, but your horse sounds lovely. You speak highly of her, anyways, so I will assume my supposition to be true.

In response to your questions –

I | As far as sports go, I’ve played just about every sport under the sun, save for American Football. To be honest, it’s always been kind of a dumb sport, and none of my friends were ever overly interested in giving it a go. Anything with a ball was in, any weather-related sports like hockey or ice-skating were out. My most prominent sport is probably football – if I weren’t a wizard, I’d love to play in a professional league.

II | Ah, this is a loaded question. Am I allowed to say my own team? I mean, it just hits different when you get to work with people and see how much they put into their practicing. My second-favorite team would probably be Slytherin, though – they’re not season winners, but they really hit hard. I hope one day Gryffindor’s offense can be as devastating as theirs.

III | Maybe New York? Or Tokyo? One of those places. Both cities are just so big and fast-paced… or maybe Valparaiso. It’s this port city in Chile that’s supposed to be absolutely unreal. Very colorful, lots of street life, you know? It’s late when I write this, my English is failing me.

IV | For me, I think it was always either Gryffindor or Slytherin. I’m not nice enough to be a Hufflepuff, and my academics aren’t exactly on-par with the Ravenclaw trend. I guess at first, I was ecstatic I’d been sorted into Gryffindor – you know, House of Potter and all that jazz. Nowadays I don’t think it matters all that much. Groups of people are groups of people. If the hat thinks I’m better off hanging with a bunch of snakes, or bird brains, or badgers, I guess it’s not a big deal. Though I will say I’ve grown quite fond of my friends in Gryffindor. Once a lion, always a lion!

V | I do – a few, actually. The family’s been keeping Lear’s pygmy puff for a while – you’ve met Greg, right? (Actually, don’t answer that LOL it narrows down my suspect pool 😉.) We also have a black Pomeranian named Haruto – he’s pretty much my sister’s dog, but he definitely loves me more because I feed him gross crap. He belonged to one of my sister’s friends previously, but we’re keeping him for her since she’s moved back to Japan for schooling. He’s pretty cute.

As for pets at school, I actually have an owl! His name is Batman though he only answers to Steve. Real bitchy bird. But he’s a good flyer so? At least I’m getting my letters on time.

Okay, my turn for questions – though I’m feeling pretty brain dead so. Apologies in advance.
1| If you could just pick up a new talent like that, what would it be and why?
𝟤| Are you musically inclined in any way? If not, are there any artistic talents you’d like to share?
𝟥| You have ten minutes to speak with one person right now, dead or alive – who are they?
𝟦| Are you happy with how the progression of your school year has gone so far? If not, is there anything you’d prefer to change or do-over?
𝟧| I’m correct in assuming you’re a muggle, right? I only say this because I vaguely recall you speaking of the pandemic inhibiting your travels home. If so, are there any things you envy of those with magical upbringing? If not, are you entertained by the notions of muggle technology?

I truly enjoyed writing to you again. These letters are always enjoyable to read back upon – apologies if I’ve reiterated anything I’ve already stated in previous letters. Given that it’s been so long, I don’t quite remember what I’ve written to you about.

Sincerely,

Thunderbird

PS. Like the new stationary? I got it for Christmas – this is the first time I’ve used it. :3
