A Nervous Goodbye Closed

“'All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.' -Leo Tolstoy,” stated the tall, dark-haired boy standing next to Destiny, "And that means that your family is unique, Dez. It's okay if they're always fighting, at least they aren't boring."

"I know, I know. You memorize the best quotes, Alarik," said the girl called Destiny as she reached up to hug him. He ruffled her hair and then turned to head to the seventh-year compartment.

"If you need anything, you know where to find me!" He called as he walked out of the compartment and into one a few rooms over. Destiny's confidence immediately plummeted, now practically nonexistent. She slumped in a seat against the window, pulling her knees to her chest and hiding her face, wishing desperately that she would become invisible so as not to have others force judgement onto her. After a while, she lay her head on the seat, accidentally bumping int someone and mumbling profuse apologies before adjusting herself and curling into a ball.

The train still hadn't started moving quite yet, so Destiny decided to look out the window. What she saw made her heart fall to pieces. There were so many students out there. Everyone from first years to seventh years, and every single one of them with some kind of parent and guardian. There were hugs, kisses, tears, laughs. Any and every sign of love. She tried to force herself to look away, but couldn't. She was mesmerized and wished her mum and dad didn't just use her for the sole purpose of wanting something to brag about. Of course, she had Alarik, who she loved as a brother, but she wanted a real parental figure.

She forced the thought from her mind, knowing that deep down they really did love her and she was just being insecure and paranoid. She shrugged off the thought and the train started moving. She rested her head on the seat as darkness flooded her and she drifted away from consciousness.

She awoke with the start as the sound of thundering footsteps surrounded her and she lifted her head up to see the lunch trolley. As it approached her, she didn't move to grab anything and just waved off the gorgeous witch who was wheeling it around, muttering a thank you. She closed her eyes again, a bucket of sleep-inducing ice washing over her head, making her shiver internally before falling once again into slumber. As she slept, she dreamt of warmth and happiness, friends and confidants, love and strength before awakening as someone shook her gently awake.
