III : HISTORY
annabeth had a full family growing up, with both a younger and older brother, as well as a younger and older sister. she was loved dearly, and although she was the middle child, she gravitated towards a behaviour closer to her younger siblings than older. she had cousins that visited twice every month, without any prejudices towards any member of her family. her parents were madly in love, but never failed to care for their children. it was the perfect family - at least that's what annabeth thought.
[two years prior]
since she was young, she had formed an irreplaceable bond with her eldest cousin, mareena. as her family was all muggles, and annabeth was not yet educated upon the topic, seeing mareena planning for a year-long trip didn't sit well with her. so, on the day of mareena's supposed departure, annabeth locked herself into her cousin's suitcase and only got out when she was safely in the train. mareena, at the time, was finding some friends in other compartments, so annabeth was alone in the compartment. she padded through the halls, wearing a gauzy white casual dress. but before she could find mareena, she was pulled into a different compartment by rough hands, and threatened by a first-year boy to either stay with him as an experiment - 'my father, my father is a muggle and i need to find a way to make him magical for us to stay together!' - or be discovered by the headmaster. at the age of six, she knew nothing better. and so she went quietly.
[one year later]
the granger family was in an uproar. one of their youngest had disappeared at the time of mareena's departure, and multiple owls were exchanged. all the while, annabeth had grown weak. frail, thin, and extremely weak. the boy - sorted into ravenclaw - had almost succeeded. but what would he do once he was done with his experiment? he spent much time debating the issue, but one day, while at the library, mareena - sorted into hufflepuff and severely tormented by the suspicion cast by annabeth's parents - came into the room, looking for some notes of a friend who shared a dormitory. she heard whimpering and found annabeth curled into the trunk. she spent excruciating care removing the girl from the trunk, and carried her to the headmaster in a severe state of hysteria. it was found that annabeth did not know about the identity of the boy who had kept her as a test subject, due to her poor vision (she had been robbed of the glasses that she'd need, and she was also severely ill). she did have magical talent, although it had been sapped of its potential by all the tests that had been performed. they were about to send her home, but mareena insisted on keeping her close, and, attributed to her high status in her professor's eyes, they abided. she was found to be a hatstall, the hat having extreme difficulty to choose between the house of helga hufflepuff and rowena ravenclaw, in the end, she was placed into hufflepuff.
