A roller coaster of an ego prodigal learner Fin

Ross entered the empty classroom, a feeling of joy fluttering within his chest. He was almost done with the second year spells in the book Knox Stephens had wrote so long ago. He should only have to enter this classroom one more time after this on his own if he was correct with his idea. As much as he adored charms, there was something so satisfying about finally completing a task one was meant to complete for quite some time. Sure he would likely feel sorrow, but there was always next year's spells, right? Well, more of the third year spells. He planned to stay ahead as much as he possibly could. he despised with a burning passion having to keep up with homework, though charms was the only class it was almost a breeze for him. It was more of the feeling like he was left behind he disliked, but for once he was one of the kids that was ahead in his class. He was no longer just painfully average to himself. He could do something, and that was just another satisfying part of this process.

This day he had entered the classroom with a purpose, and he knew exactly what he was going to do. While in his own little bag he kept the majority of his most prized possessions, today he walked in with the Book of Spells in hand along with the notes Knox Stephens had wrote so long ago. There was a sort of confidence Ross shined in contrast to the first day he had when he had first started charms. Perhaps it was even an ego developing in one subject, but it would likely be shattered if someone was to say a word. He knew well he needed to work hard for this, and it was not as if he had not. It was more of like he did not trust himself to do this specific Charm outside of the charms classroom. It was a tid-bit dangerous when done in an uncontrolled area, so that was why he put so much faith in the charms classroom.

Once he made his way towards the center of the room, the boy placed down the Book of Spells between his legs. It was a hefty book as it was, so he felt it would be an interesting experiment. Ross proceeded to back up, and once he was at a distance he put his hands out as if they were a square measuring if it was in the perfect spot. Deciding the spot was adequate, the Hufflepuff went to work.

He placed down his bag next to him and crouched down next to it. He stuck his arm in and found himself digging around inside. Once he pulled out his wand, he found his Remembrall accidentally rolled out along with it. Ross gently picked it up in his right hand, and looked through it. It was not red, but through it he saw the book in front of him. A reckless smirk found its way onto his face, as the worst idea he had yet came to mind.

Ross approached the book once more, crouched down, and placed the ball on top of it. He managed to get it into a position where it did not just roll off as soon as it could, and Ross was proud of himself for this. He backed up once more, and stared at it. Now his aim had to be perfect, or else everything would be ruined. Placing Knox's book next to him, he opened to the page on the Engorgement charm and read through it once more. Getting a better grip on his wand, he pointed his wand directly at the book. Aim was vital in this.

The brunette started in the upper left and brought it slightly down. He then proceeded to make a large circle going to the right, and once he made it to the equivalent point of where the little drawn down point stopped he mirrored it. It looked like a pumpkin in his opinion, and that was quite alright with him. Pumpkins were cool.

"Engorgio!" He stated, exclaiming only as if he was demanding the book to listen to him.

He closed his eyes and imagined the book would get huge. He imagined it would at least get a foot taller as well. When he opened his chocolate brown eyes, he found that he was right. It had grown quite a bit, but not a foot. Still, he considered it a win. He especially considered it a win that the Remembrall did not grow as well. Perhaps his aim was getting better.

Ross squealed. He really managed to do it the first try, and he managed to not set himself on fire in the process! He was not one to celebrate 'like a little girl' , but it was simply so exciting and there were hardly any people around. What was the shame in it? Besides, it was a big deal. It was a second year spell, so he was practically a year ahead in his book. That was a big deal for Ross, at least. Now all he had to do was reverse the whole 'making it big' thing and make it the average size so he could actually use his textbook, which would certainly be a joy. It was not like Knox's book had everything, but it had the minor details that truly helped him understand how charms worked. It was a new perspective, and for Ross it was welcome in this case and this case only.

Ross moved to the next where he put Knox's book of charms, and proceeded to flip to the next page. Because the spells were so similar to each other, it was no wonder they were right next to each other. They relied on each other to be ultimately useful in the first place unless someone needed a gargantuan orange. Say, could the spell fix world hunger? Well, that was an important question but it was probably meant for another time. Hypothetically, probably, but it just had to be one of those things he would lay awake at night thinking about because he was too anxious to inquire to the teacher if it worked on food. Maybe he could even try in the dining hall. That would be a fun party trick, but once again it would have to wait until later.

As Ross acknowledged what was in the book, he remembered the spell was rather simple. The incantation and movement for it both seemed to correlate with each other in a way that made it difficult to forgive. Perhaps that was why they were teaching it to kids who were twelve, but it was still simple enough for him to feel like he did not need to look over the book over and over again to just understand the basics of it. With wand in hand, he practiced the little V that he had to create.

When Ross attempted to make his way back to his spell casting spot, he felt a tug at his shoe.

FLOP

The Hufflepuff crashed onto the floor and the boy let out a groan. That bag he had put in the absolute most inconvenient spot had tripped him, but unfortunately for him there was more to come.Soon there was a noise of something... rolling? It sounded as if something was rolling on another object, and dread filled Ross' chest as he realized what it was.

The remembrall

Reflexes got the better of Ross as he rolled over so he was no longer laying so he was crushing the arm with the wand in hand, and watched as it began to roll towards the edge of the book. It did not even process in his mind the most it could do was get a scratch or perhaps even a crack in it if it were to fall. He knew the repairing charm, but in the moment all he knew was he could slow it down.

Ross stretched out his arm, still laying on the ground, and made an M in the air.

"Arresto Momentum!" He cried just as the ball fell from its unbalanced position.

Sure enough, it's kinetic energy slowed until it gently touched the ground. Ross let out a sigh of relief, though it was obvious it was not even needed in the first place. Truth was, the boy had been practicing that one in particular. Now whenever something fell, he instinctively did that spell. It just made things easier considering how clumsy he was, and now he finally got to use it. Ross pushed himself off the ground and rubbed the arm he fell on before approaching the tiny ball on the ground. He crouched down and picked it up. He glanced at it from all angles, and sure enough there were no scratches. He doubted there would be int he first place, but he appreciated his own effort.

Ross made his way back towards his bag and crouched down once more. He proceeded to put the bag upright again, and gently placed the remembrall in the bag. Now he could actually fix what he had done with everything out of the way, and luckily there were no more poor choices to make besides not doing the spell. Either way, of course Ross was going to do the spell. He needed this book to pass the class. There was no legitimate decent reason to not shrink it, and besides he wanted to get the spell done.

The Hufflepuff made his way back towards the center of the room, finally ready for the better spell. He had already looked over the spell before the moment, and it was difficult to forget so he now felt rather certain he could successfully cast the shrinking charm. He tossed his wand back and fourth as it hit him that this would be the final time this year to enter this classroom to prove he could learn the spells.to himself until next year. It seemed rather fitting though. It was almost the end of the year, and the weather was warming up. In regular school, he would be taking exams right now. It was the end of an experience he would not have until next year, and he was rather proud of that. He finally had a grasp on all his subjects for a little while, and now he had figured out which subject he really knew how to do. Ross was certainly not smart, no no he was painfully average in other classes, but in this he knew what he was doing. More importantly, he could finally show off to his friends he understood what he was doing as well. He was never sure if he would have a genuine need for the spells, but he hoped one day he would. It would be nice.

Ross snapped himself out of his own thoughts. The textbook, right. Ross steadied his position and took a deep breath in. He was finally going to finish this all off.

Starting in the upper left corner, he made a sharp diagonal line towards the center. He then made a sharp diagonal line going up to the right, congruent to the left. It was an arrow, or perhaps it was the letter V. He could sort of see how it applied to shrinking, but it was much more simple than associative.

"Reducio." He stated, not quietly but not loudly either.

it was a balance that Ross was testing out, but he still kept that stupid smile of his on his face. A purple light blared and made it practically impossible to see for Ross until it all died down.

The book was back to regular size, or at least Ross hoped it was. It could be a little smaller, but Ross would never know until he compared it with another person's book. Either way, he did it. Ross untensed his shoulders as he repeated that phrase to himself.

"I did it." he remarked, unable to truly process that for now his time of doing second year spells was over.

He walked over to the textbook and bent down to pick it up. Sure enough, there was no damage done on the front and the same could be confirmed for the back.

He really did it.

After reading through each post, I have seen that Ross Stephens has succesfully learned Engorgio, Arresto Momentum, and Reducio.
