Isadora pushed open the doors that lead outside with a contented sigh. The sun illuminated her skin with its warm rays and a soft breeze whistled through her wavy hair. It was a perfectly sunny day and Isadora planned to take advantage of the weather.

She hiked up her shoulder pack and made her way steadily towards the Great Lake. She hummed to herself softly as she skipped her way merrily towards the dark water, stopping just short of the edge, watching as the wind moved the water to gently lap at the beginning of the shore.

"This spot seems good enough," Isadora said to herself. She pulled a small blanket from her pack and gently shook it out, laying it across the ground before sitting herself down. She sighed contentedly as she pulled out some more items from her pack. She pulled out a small bag of foods to snack on as well as a small journal, her quill, and some ink. As she opened her bag of snacks and began to munch on a piece of carrot, she leaned herself over to look into the lake. She couldn't see much through the darkness, even in the shallow parts of the lake. She shrugged and leaned back, letting her journal flip open she tapped her quill against the blank page.

She had hoped to catch sight of some of the creatures living in the lake so she could study their movements and behaviors...and possibly befriend them, but she would probably have to dive in towards the deeper parts to see any kind of that action. Her lips pursed at the thought of it. She didn't think that would go over well with any of the professors. She set her journal aside and pulled her knees to her chest, her chocolate brown eyes staring across the lake. She could feel herself zoning out a bit when suddenly she saw a flash of a tentacle splashing up out of the lake. She perked up and smiled a bit. It looks like she wasn't the only one feeling restless on this day. She then began to look around herself to see if anyone else was around. Surely she wasn't the only one outside enjoying the perfect weather.

"Don't fall in...that water is absolutely freezing!" She would know, she did so once. Well, not so much a fall in but rather a stammer in? A rush in? Something. She had been in that water before and it really was absolutely freezing. Alina paused when the girl jumped a little. She had been looking the other way when she approached and then turned her focus back to her. Alina didn't like people looking at her these days now that she was one of the school's outcasts.

"You seemed to be getting awfully close," she shrugged. "You planning on staying here long?" she glanced at the carrot in the girl's hand. Surely that would be most annoying, trying to get some schoolwork here in the solitude of where she liked to be with a girl munching on a carrot like a rabbit.

A rabbit.

The thought made Alina smile and she went over and sat down, using one of the trunks of a nearby tree as a support and pulled her bag close to her. She took out her herbology textbook and began to read that day's assignment. It was an entire chapter of reading and she needed to waste no more time getting it done. She brought out her quill so she could make notes within the margin.

She jumped when she heard another voice break the silence. She turned to see a girl standing before her and released the breath she didn't realize she had been holding in. She hadn't even been paying attention to her surroundings and managed to almost give herself a heart attack due to her lack of focus. She put a hand to her chest, which was still beating quite fast from the jump scare.

"Oh, you scared me!" She said with a relieved laugh. She put her carrot down onto her snack bag and looked to the lake. She hadn't thought she was that close.

"Oh, don't worry, I'm pretty balanced. I wasn't planning on getting close enough to fall, I just wanted to peek and see if I could find any life moving in the shallow ends...but it's too dark to see," Isadora said, slight disappointment lacing her tone. When the girl asked if she was staying long, Isadora shrugged.

"Well, I was planning on it," She then watched the girl make her way over to a trunk and pull out a textbook. "Oh, sorry I didn't realize this was your studying place, I can leave if you like?" Isadora offered. She didn't want to be nuisance if the girl was trying to do schoolwork. She put her carrot away inside her bag and swapped it for a strawberry instead. She doubted her classmate would like the sound of her crunches when trying to read. She picked up her snack back filled with a mix of strawberries, grapes, and honeydew pieces.

"Would you like some? Brain food, and all, you know?" She asked.

Brainfood. Obviously this girl was a Ravenclaw and Alina's eyes moved from the girl's face down to the tie around her neck. Sure enough, Ravenclaw. It made Alina a little jealous. If there was another house other than Slytherin that her family might deem acceptable to be placed into, that would most likely be Ravenclaw. But no, she was a Hufflepuff, even if it wasn't quite apparent. Any time that she wasn't in class, Alina would tear off her scarf and shove it into her bag. No use people needing to see her in such a get-up.

She wanted to make some other snippy remark to the girl just because of her bad mood but it didn't seem very appropriate. Already 1) the girl was talking to her. That was more than most people did around school since the term began. 2) The girl asked if this was her study spot, offering her up peace although the girl was here first. And 3) The girl was now offering her a snack.

"I'm good. I've got lemon drops," she looked back down to her book for a couple seconds. "You're welcomed to have some if you'd like," she then broke the silence again and looked back up. It was a bit of a peace offering. Not everyone got that from Alina. Her hatred of herself these days transferred onto her feelings of others but she knew this girl was trying to be nice and so Alina was trying to not be so awful back.

Isadora smiled as the girl offered her some lemondrops. She loved sour candies but she had already eaten her weight in sweets during lunch, so it didn't seem smart to have more.

"Maybe later, thank you. I had more than I should have earlier today. I should probably stick to fruits for my sweet tooth for now." She scooted a bit to the side of her blanket, turning a bit to face the girl. Out of her peripheral vision, she saw another splash of a tentacle way out into the lake. She made herself focus back onto the girl.

"Would like to sit with me? I promise not to distract you too much. I should probably do some studying as well,. It was just so nice outside, I couldn't resist a bit of relaxation." Isadora offered. As she spoke, she pushed her journal aside and dug into her pack again, pulling forth her notes and her book from Potions class, setting them down in front of her. She cracked open her Potions textbook and began to take some notes.

After a moment she turned again towards the lake. Her journal lay almost forlornly to the side. She hadn't had much time to explore the magical creatures that lived on land and in the lake. She knew that she had a few years until she would be able to take Care of Magical Creatures, but it seemed so far off. She wasn't sure if she could stand the patience. To take her mind off of it she turned her focus back to her notes and the girl in front of her.

"I'm Isadora, by the way," She said, introducing herself nonchalantly.

The girl reminded Alina of her twin sister Bella when there was a cute boy on the beach. Not that she was admiring something, but just that she seemed frequently distracted.

"Isadora..." she said slowly. "That's quite a mouthful." But weren't most names? Yes, only those that were simple names weren't a mouthful and many of those simple names were boring. "It's a nice name...don't get me wrong...just a lot to say." She really didn't want to tell the girl her name. If people knew her, they knew her as the girl that made a complete ass of herself at the sorting ceremony on day one, sassing the Sorting Hat until it placed her in Hufflepuff. Then, to top it off, she insulted absolutely everyone within her newly appointed House. It was a nightmare. It still was.

"Do you ever go by Izzy or Isa or Dora, Dory..." she often rambled on and sighed. It was a trait she hated about herself. "I'm Alina," she whispered. Time to get the attention back off her. "The Lake. What keeps capturing your interest?" Surely she couldn't deny it with the way she kept looking back over there every minute. Alina didn't seem offended by it. In fact, she was rather curious.

Hmm, her father had always called her by her full name. Although the girl was right, her name could be a mouthful. She hadn't noticed it much until it was pointed out to her as she never had socialized much back home and she was still trying to meet people here at school.

"I've never had a nickname before...but, I think I like the sound of Izzy," Isadora tried the name out herself. She smiled a bit, it sounded quite nice actually. "Yes, that sounds fine. Call me Izzy," she said with an agreeable nod.

The newly appointed Izzy listened as the girl stated her name as Alina. What a pretty name, Izzy thought.

"It is nice to meet you, Alina," Izzy said with a welcoming tone. She looked back towards the lake when Alina asked about what had her so distracted.

"I keep seeing tentacles from the giant squid splashing about. I originally came here to see if I could study some of the creatures that live in the lake...I fancy myself a magizoologist in training, I suppose. I love researching magical creatures. They are all so fascinating, and usually better company than some of people I used to know back home. I used to explore the forests surrounding my home in Doolin, Ireland to study some of the habitats there. Although it seems we are a bit more limited here." She said, happy to share her interests with someone.

"What do you aspire to be after school?" She asked her companion with genuine interest. The girl, Alina, seemed a bit withdrawn which Izzy felt she could relate to.

"That's quite interesting," she said, meaning it too. She really hadn't given much thought to any sort of magical creatures yet. Even there, she had that encounter once with the fox but surely he wasn't magical...just adorable.

"I suppose in all honesty I haven't given it all that much thought yet," she spoke of her future aspirations. "I like keeping myself knowledgeable. I like reading. I like art," she shrugged. "But I don't intend to become either a librarian or an artist..." she laughed a little because there she went, beginning to ramble again. She cleared her throat softly. "That's a shame that they make those like you wait so long still to take Care of Magical Creatures. There should be an advanced course for those that know they want to make a career of it. When you do get there, Izzy, I'm certain you'll love it."

"I favor Herbology and Potions right now. Can't say what one would do with that. Honestly, before here, I thought I'd meet a handsome rich guy and get married," she shrugged. "There's some here at Hogwarts that are rather well-to-do and I think that's still my sister's plan..." Her voice got a little quieter as she mentioned her sister. The two had been inseparable once and now they went days without speaking.

Alina looked up at the sky just to distract herself from thinking of her Slytherin twin sister and then realized the position of the sun. "You know...I don't know how active that thing would be in morning's time, but the sun might just be in the right position to illuminate the Lake better. Maybe the water would be less murky and you could catch a better glimpse of Mr. Invisible." That's what she had decided to name that octopus/squid/creature from the Lake. Alina tended to give names to things like that.
