The first journey
@Ivy Grant
It is MY day. I am finally going to understand the family conversations about this well-known school in our world. Hogwarts. My sisters Alex and Lauren are respectively in Gryffindor and Ravenclaw. My mother went to Ravenclaw and my father to Hufflepuff. I have no idea where the sorting hat is going to send me but I don't have any preference. I am just too excited to be part of this magical world.
We arrived on the platform 93/4 one hour in advance because of me, I guess. I started to get enthusiastic for everything, as usual. The red train, the smoke, the signs of magic everywhere. Alex was looking at me jaded and probably a little bit embarassed by my comportement. She soon found a space to be far from me. Lauren was discretly and gently laughing at me. Anyway, I was in my bubble, not paying attention to them.
The day before I had overhead a conversation between my parents. They were proud of me but also kind of afraid. They knew I was able to stay calm when I wanted but they also knew I was quite... Energic ? Unruly ? Therefore, they were afraid I would not be enough assiduous. Alex was doing only what was strictly necessary to pass but it was a success. Lauren was one of the best students of her promotion. What will be my place in the school ? That was one of their biggest fear, to let me leave the nest. I my opinion, they were worring for nothing. I was perfectly able to take care of myself.
Anyway, the hour was over so fast, before I had the chance to make any friend. However I didn't loose my optimism and I found a free coach to spend the journey. Lauren had asked me if I wanted to come with her and her friends but I refused. I was a little bit afraid, but I wanted to show everyone I was able to take care of myself.

The first journey
September 1st, 2019.
Newtyle, Scotland.
It was on sunny day. Ivy and her parents were about to leave the family home when Alejandra asked one more time if Ivy did put her cap and all of her books in her trunk. Of course she did, and the little girl was a bit upset to be treated as a four-year-old child. Fortunately, Ivy’s father checked his watch and put an end to the questioning – the three wizards had to go if they wanted to be on time at the Leaky Cauldron. They gathered near the chimney and repeated the instructions for the last time.
“It’s just like the other times we travelled, okay? Your Mom goes first and then you throw the powder and say “Leaky Cauldron”, all right?” cautiously said Leonard.
“Yes, Daddy.” answered the little Ivy who was very impatient.
Five minutes later the Grants were in the Leaky Cauldron. Ivy’s parents were both worrying, for different reasons yet. Indeed it was a real hardship for Alejandra to let her chiquita going to a school which would probably become a second home for the little witch. Her mother was afraid that Ivy wouldn’t make any friend or fit in at Hogwarts. Conversely, Leonard’s concerns were about her daughter’s schooling because he knew she was sometimes unruly.
However, Ivy was more than ready to finally join the Castle. She walked fast in the station and arrived first in front of the wall. Which wall? The famous wall that her father told her about several times and that has to be crossed to join the Platform 93/4. It was the last step before leaving her parents but Ivy didn’t care. The only thing that stopped her was the huge crowd she then saw on the platform. The little girl was rather enthusiastic and reckless but also uncertain and a bit introverted. Therefore, this crowd of young wizards scared her and Ivy suddenly slowed down even if she tried not to show her fear to her parents.
“Here I go. I look forward to seeing all these magical things. I think I have all I’ll need in my trunk and I promise to be good, so don’t worry.”
Alejandra and Leonard looked at each other with wide eyes. They were astonished of hearing these words but Ivy didn’t let them the time to answer and jumped into the red train. Her heart was beating faster and faster. All she wanted was to find an empty coach to relax a bit before arriving. She found one with a lonely girl that seems nice.
“Hello!” she said to the red-haired girl. “My name is Ivy, can I sit here?”

The first journey
About two minutes after I had sat in the coach, a tanned girl came in. She seemed as much excited as I was to be in the Hogwarts Express. As she was not with anyone, I supposed that she was also a first year student. I immediatly replied to her question.
" Hi ! Of course you can sit here, come in ! I'm Riley. "
I tried to calm down. I didn't want to scare the first person I was talking to. Alex had told me before, that if I wanted to be able to make friends I should stop behaving as I usually was. Lauren then had told me that it was not true and that I had to behave as I wanted to make some friends who will like me for my personality. At that moment, I decided to stop thinking, it was not really me to try to find out how to act. I was spontaneous and above all, honest. And I could'nt start to stop being honest to me.
" I am super excited to finally go to Hogwarts. My twin sisters Alex and Lauren have already been there for 3 years now. Do you have siblings ? Do you come from a wizard or a muggle family ? "
I stopped their with my questions because I had to breathe before continuing. Also, I had learned for a long time that it was better to let someone answering the questions before asking news. Orelse you can't have any answer.
I crossed my knees and took a chocolate frog from my stock. Our parents had gave to each of us a stock of candy for the travel. I handed the bag towards Ivy and said :
" Help yourself ! It is from my parents. I guess they were afraid we get starved. "

The first journey
Ivy slowly came and sat down in front of her new classmate. She seemed really excited to meet her, so Ivy guessed she was also a first-year student who was looking forward to discovering the castle – a first thing they had in common. Then, the little Grant stared at her while she nervously stamped the floor. Actually, she had already met some young witches and wizards that were sons and daughters of her parents’ friends but it was the first time she could make a friend, so she tried to stay calm and not to frighten Riley.
The other girl on the contrary didn’t try to hide her excitement. She first began to tell Ivy that she had older twins at Hogwarts. Ivy thought she was lucky to have sisters that could help her to start her studies and to not feel alone. Maybe that was the reason why Riley seemed so comfortable here.
“I have no brothers and sisters but my parents are wizards, so are all of my grandparents. Actually, I have never met any Muggle. What about you?”
Ivy thought Muggles were very strange. She didn’t dislike them but she was very astonished when her preceptor told about their habits – such as the way they move by car. According to her naive mind, wizards could and should help them by telling the existence of Floo powder or giving them Portkeys. Even if Ivy wasn’t really interested in learning things about Muggles, she didn’t understand why Wizards and Muggles were two different communities, and even more why some wizards despised Muggles. Well, one day she’ll be able to ask these questions to her Muggle Studies professor, but to come back on the Hogwarts Express, Ivy carefully listened her classmate’s answer.
While Riley was telling a bit more about her family’s story, she took out a chocolate frog from her bag and offered it to Ivy. Then Alejandra’s voice echoed in her head.
“Remember Ivy, you can’t eat candies because your teeth will be invaded by sugar monsters that will destruct them.”
The little girl became uncertain. In fact, she was not hungry and the chocolate frog didn’t attract her because she’d never eaten one, but she didn’t want to upset her new friend. She took one and before eating it she thanked her and gave back one of the sandwiches her mother made.
“Thank you! It seems delicious. Here is a cheddar sandwich my mother made. I love cheese, don’t you?”

The first journey
Ivy seemed a little bit nervous, she was stamping the floor but she didn't look shy and she answered my questions calmly. On the spot, I didn't really pay attention to those information I noticed, I was too excited for that. I was really sad for her to not have any siblings. How in the world was it possible to spend your entire childhood alone with your parents ? I stayed shoked for a minute, trying to think about my house without the chases with Alex, without the hoaxes, without the calm moments with Lauren... I exclaimed spontaneously :
" No way, I could never live my life without my sisters. At home, I'm spending my time hoaxing Alex and playing with Lauren. What could I ever do alone ? "
I know, I probably should have think before saying that but until this moment I had never thought it was possible to be a single child and not being in contact with other children during your entire childhood. I tryed to catch up :
" I mean... Wasn't it hard for you ? Were your parents often with you ? " In order to not let a discomfort blank because of what I said before, I continued. " My parents are both wizards and I guess my grand-parents were too. I don't know all of them, it is quite complicated... I have already played with Muggles children when I was young. After my first magical spark, my parents decided it was too dangerous to let me out in case of... You know... I would do accidental magic. They were just as you and me but without magic ! I kind of feel sorry for them, magic is so wonderful and they are not able to use it... Well, I know we cannot really either before 17 but at least we can learn to use it. "
I took a cheddar sandwich and thanked Ivy for it. I took a bite and said :
" Sooo good. I love cheddar sandwiches. But my mom always told us to stop eating as much cheese as we do... Actually, to be honest, I guess it is rater because we eat some between meals. In my defense it makes hungry to find idea to hoax Alex all the time. "
I was still thinking of Ivy's childhood. What was she doing during the day ? Maybe she had a pet to play with ? If she has never met any Muggle, I guess that she has never been to a Muggle school. My mind couldn't understand that situation. It was impossible.

The first journey
The train was now far from the English capital. Ivy constantly looked at the window to see the countryside landscape – she wanted to keep in mind this famous first journey. England was not so different from Scotland: there were villages with a church that was about to pierce the cloudy sky. Most of the time, a rather green landscape was appearing, sometimes punctuated with herds of sheep or cows. Finally, Ivy was wondering if she was really going to a school of Magic, or just coming back by a monotonous means of transport, but fortunately this journey got more exciting thanks to Riley’s enthusiasm.
Riley was very astonished that Ivy could had been bred in a house where she was the only child. Similarly to Ivy who couldn’t imagine the Muggles’ habits, she wasn’t able to consider a life without her sisters because she used to hoax one of her – something that Ivy did to her grandmother when she looked after her.
“I often feel lonely because I can't play with someone else and my parents don’t allow me to play in the garden when they are indoor. It is rather boring but when my grandmother comes and supervises me I can do more things such as playing Gobstones. My dream is to have a pet to play with but my father’s always said that I don’t work enough to have one.”
Ivy was a bit sad because Riley seemed so pleased to have siblings whereas she’d never been allowed to own a little cat. This was something she’ll talk about when she’ll come back home for her holidays and maybe she could have one if she argues that she feels alone at Hogwarts to her mother. The little girl was a bit cunning and known her mother was worrying about her wellbeing, so she could accept more easily.
While the little Grant was planning her trick, the other girl also attested her love for cheese. Ivy was now certain: Riley and her had been made to be friends, that was obvious. Even if Ivy couldn’t eat cheddar between meals, she tried to consider this possibility and her eyes suddenly lit up. She was wondering how Riley could live a so wonderful life with cheddar and siblings. Her parents should be very cool!
“How can you eat between meals, or hoax your sister? Aren’t your parents here to look after you? At home, for example, never have I ever been alone. My parents are often at home and when they both work, my grandmother or my preceptor come over.”

The first journey
I was feeling so sad for Ivy. The most exciting thing of her childhood was to play gobstones with her Grandma ?! I like being with my paternal grand-parents Abigail and Gideon, that is not the problem. The problem is that her only source of joy was to play gobstones !?
My grand-mother is always cooking cakes for us, I am crazy about her carrot cake it is my favorite food in the world. My grandfather is learning us to repair things which is mostly interesting Alex. Lauren often goes for a walk with our Grannie. I don't like going with them because they walk to slow and our grandma is always asking me to stop running and jumping on roots and trees stumps. Their walks are soooooo boring. They are always speaking about the nature which is not really interesting according to me. Yes, some flowers are red, others are yellow, and so ? I hope herbology will be more interesting. As you can see, our grandparents are nice to us, but a little bit kill-joys.
On the other side of the family, I only have my grandmother, Joyce, as my grandfather died when my mum was still at Hogwarts. My mum says that she has a disease. I think it is called be-polarity. I don't really understand what it is, I just now that sometimes she is happy and a little bit wacky (according to my mother, she has always done weird things and it has nothing to do with her be-polarity) and sometimes she is sad. I like seeing her when she is wacky because she does a lot of funny things with me. One time, we went on a tour in the Knight Bus. At the beginning I was scared but then, I understood that the cars could not impact our bus. Was Ivy' grand-mother as fun as mine ? That could explain why she seemed so enthusiastic when speaking about her.
" Is your grand-mother doing crazy things ? One time I did a tour in the Knight Bus with my maternal grandma, it was so fun, he was driving so fast ! It is a secret, my parents have never learned what we've done." Then I added as I remembered one thing she had said : " That's so sad that your father doesn't want any pet in your house. It could have helped you to not feel so lonely. But I guess, now that you are about to start your studies in Hogwarts you will not be lonely anymore if you don't want to. As my sister Alex prefers to be lonely, I guess you can still be sometimes, when you need it but you can also speak to others if you want. "
I was glad to finally come at Hogwarts, since Lauren and Alex were at Hogwarts, I have felt sooo lonely. Especially as I was not able to go back to the Muggles school.
" My father is working for the Nimbus company, he is testing new brooms all day. My mum is working at St Mangoo's hospital so she is not often at home. My grandparents used to look an eye on me and my sisters. My grandmother doesn't like us to take cheese between meals, but it was like a competition between us. Succeed in getting a little piece without being busted. I was the best ! "

The first journey
Ivy was now listening to Riley’s story and eating her sandwich at the same time. As she was giving more details about her, the little Grant thought she definitely had a dream life. Her grandmother was really crazy to have brought her in the Knight Bus! Ivy had only heard about it once because her uncle Juan did a tour and told her how fast it was. She could remember his promise to bring her when she is older.
“Wow you did a tour! My uncle Juan did too. Weren’t you afraid?” she said before to continue “my grandma is very cool and sometimes we go and see my grandpa at the wands shop he works in. He told me many things about wands, that’s so much more interesting than the subjects I learnt with my preceptor. Did you have a preceptor too after leaving your school?”
The train had now crossed a great bridge and there were no houses around. Ivy joyfully looked at her watch: it was almost two o’clock. In a few hours she should be arrived to the famous castle. At that moment, she suddenly thought about her future House. Many witches and wizards of her paternal family were sorted in Slytherin, and even if Ivy knew this House was not only for pretentious and coward people, she preferred not to be part of because she was different from them. Or maybe, if Riley was, they could stay together. In fact, while the journey was advancing, the little Grant enjoyed to know more and more about Riley and hoped they could be sorted in the same House to share their room.
“Actually, I would be glad to make some friends at Hogwarts and I hope we’ll be sorted both in the same House! As a great part of my father’s family went to Slytherin, I guess that’s my destiny but my father went to Hufflepuff so maybe I could also be an exception. What about you?”
Then, Riley explained some stuffs about her parents. Her father was a very lucky man who worked for the Nimbus company as a tester of brooms, something that made Ivy gape. This work would be really exciting! But… also dangerous, very dangerous. Ivy shivered by thinking about the first and last time she rode a broom. Riley stared at her curiously, then she started to explain her adventure.
“When I was young, my dream was to play Quidditch but you know, my Mom and Dad said it was dangerous and I was forbidden to ride a broom. But once, as my grandmother was cooking for lunch, I discreetly rode my mother’s broomstick and of course, I flew straight into a tree. Then I had to go to St Mungo’s because my knee was broken and now I still have to pay attention when I run because my mother said it could be blocked”

The first journey
" Mmmh, no, the Knight Bus was fun. Well, you better hang somewhere if you don't want to fall. But once you are used to it it is fine. Also, it is better not to eat before... I don't think this advice needs more details. "
I was thinking it should be fun to have a wand seller in the family. I was not enough patient to do this kind of job. Actually, I had no idea which job could suit me well. I knew I was still young and that I had not even started to learn magic but I really had no clue about my future.
" Oh, my sister Lauren wants to become an artisan ! I am not sure she wants to craft wands but she surely would be interesting to speak with your grandfather. "
When Ivy told me she had a preceptor I was surprised. We were not living in the same world. For me, only rich people had preceptor. Was she living in a huge mansion ? Fortunately, even if I was often speaking without thinking, I had to many things to say before being rude.
" Well, I never had a preceptor. My parents bought me some books to work on and when my grand-mother was keeping an eye on me, she used to help me to do my homework. Also, every week-end, we were doing a family activity which consisted in going in the nature and observing different things. One time, we went to the forest near our town to see birds and learn about them. Also, my dad told me a little about astronomy as he really likes this subject. But what I prefer the most is when we do obstacle course. How was you preceptor ?"
It was so easy to speak with Ivy, especially as we had really different lives. I thought it was interesting to learn that people can live differently, and that was explaining a lot of things in their behavior.
Ivy started to tell me about the houses and I became very excited. We were going closer and closer to Hogwarts and I couldn't wait to see in which house I will be sorted. With my S-name, I knew I would have to wait a long time before knowing it. I didn't really have a preference, but a little though in my mind told me it could be nice to be in the same house as Ivy.
" Well, I have no idea where I could be sorted. In my family we don't really have this kind of destiny. I hope we will be able to share our dormitory ! Do you have any preference ?"
Then Ivy explained to me that she had an accident when she was younger. I immediately thought about Alex's accident, when she fall off a roof she had climb. Maybe this accident will make Ivy be sorted in Gryffindor too ? I told it to Ivy without thinking it could maybe scare her. At that time, I had no idea some family could be mad at their children for not being in the right house.
" Does your knee hurt you sometimes ? Do you think you can't ride a broom anymore ? If you have been to St Mangoo's they should have fix it ?"
I then suddenly stopped talking, I knew I should ask my questions step by step but I was so excited to know Ivy more. I had not often had the occasion to speak to child of the same age as me.

The first journey
As the little girls were now like new friends, Ivy felt better, relaxed. The fact she was talking about her whole family and not only her parents made her more comfortable and confident because the small voices of Alejandra and Leonard she had in mind had now disappeared. Their absence enabled the little Grant to speak about everything, even her crash from the broomstick – something that Alejandra told her to keep as a secret – or to give her opinion on her family.
“It could be fun if you and your sisters come to my village one day! My grandparents live there too so I imagine Alex could talk to my grandpa, he is really nice. By the way, I live in Scotland and you?”
Then Riley told her the way she was educated. It seemed funnier than the lessons of Ivy’s preceptor… Furthermore, Riley’s parents spent a lot of time with their children to teach them astronomy or to hike in the forest. That was at odds with the education given by Ivy’s parents which consisted more in paying someone to make her learning some things she wasn’t interested in.
“So your parents are often with you! Mine spend a very long time at Edinburgh, they both work at the Scottish magical law school. That’s why I have a preceptor and one of my father’s best friends who teaches me to play the piano. That’s boring because I have to learn classical music only and I don’t really like it even if my favourite composer is Chopin, do you like him?”
Ivy felt nervous as she was seeing more and more students fussing in the train. Maybe they were almost arrived? This was exciting. In less than an hour she will have put down her trunk in her dormitory. But… she was afraid to be sorted in Slytherin, except if Riley was too because they could be friends without talking to the others.
“In fact I don’t like my father’s family because they are mean and pretentious and selfish. Many of them were sorted in Slytherin and I don’t want to become like them, I don’t want to walk in their footstep because I am not like them.”
This was the first time Ivy told this to someone. At home it was difficult to say something about her father’s family, for obvious reasons. She was pleased to share this with Riley who was empathic even if their situations were very different. That’s why she also felt safe to speak about her accident with her.
“Now it doesn’t hurt anymore because my aunt fixed it when I went to St Mungo’s. Nonetheless my mother told me not to run or ride a broom even if I think this is just because she’s afraid it happens again. But my mother will not be at Hogwarts so… I guess I can do everything I want.”
On those final words, Ivy smiled and got prepared for the great arrival.
