You're A Witch, Callie

{ PV to Callie Jensen }
12th February 2019, The Jensen Home
Hjørdis blinked as she read the name again on the page. She was looking at a list of muggleborns that were turning eleven this year - the list of students that the professors would have to visit to explain magic. "I'll... take the next one..." She said softly to the colleague that was looking over the list with her. She did not bother to explain why she wanted to take it, she just opted to do it. It was likely a relief to him anyway, as it was one less job for him. Besides, he was also probably used to her not actually bothering to explain anything. Internalising was a part of her life. Anyone who knew her knew that. Anyone who did not know her, also knew that. Though, the name itself was a big giveaway. If he actually bothered to read the name, the 'Jensen' might be a giveaway.
Talking the letter from the desk, she returned the report and headed off to prepare for the journey. This one was not very far, located in Scotland itself. But she did not need to look at the address or even figure out how to get there. Her body moved on its own accord, seemingly as though it knew exactly where to go. The witch was dressed in a pair of jeans, black boots with heels and a shirt. She threw on a cosy jumper on top of it to combat some of the old British weather. Grabbing her handbag, she checked it to ensure that there was a small box in there before heading out of the castle. She paused for a moment, sighing her eyes fell onto her growing kitten, Jeger. "Yes, fine, you can come too," She replied with a smile as she scooped the purring bengal up. She normally would not have brought her pet to a student's house but... this student was different.
It did not take long to arrive at the destination - one of the many perks of being a witch, after all. Her usual blank expression softened at the sight of the house. A warmth filled her usual cold expression as her lips tugged into a smile. There was something about this place that just warmed her heart up, melting it. It brought out a side of her that not many got to see. Glancing down at the letter, still gripped in her hand, she tucked it into her handbag for now. She exhaled softly, hesitating slightly.
She had been here before. This was definitely not her first time here - nor was it the first time explaining magic to a muggleborn's family. These things happened often. That was not what was making her nervous. What was making her nervous was how they were going to take the information. She normally would be far more professional and fearless. But this time was different. It was no longer just professional. There was a weird mix between remaining professional and her personal connection to this family.
Her hand raised, pressing the doorbell of the house with a finger.

You're A Witch, Callie
Sugar and eleven year olds are a dangerous combination, a fact which seemed to have slipped past Callie's parents despite it barely being noon. However today such mistakes were permissible considering it was the child's birthday which she had not yet failed to remind everyone in the household of. Much to the dismay of her father Callie had been awake since the crack of dawn, after awaking him and everyone else lucky enough to the live in the farmhouse with a squeal and a jump on the chest. Since then Callie's trademark excitement hadn't failed to disappear, especially after unwrapping a compass to accompany her on adventures into the forest.
Things were worsened by the unfortunate gift of a slingshot which Callie had found great joy in terrorising her older brother with. For him the morning had been one of endless torture at the hands of his younger sister chasing him everywhere armed with the very slingshot he'd gifted her. Usually it didn't take long for Adrian to put an end to his sister's antics although considering today was her birthday he didn't have the heart to do it. So for the sake of Callie he endured constantly being whacked with whatever tiny stone the little rascal managed to get her hands on next.
However her reign of terror against Adrian was cut short by the doorbell, prompting Callie to loudly proclaim to the room that she was going to answer the door. The young girl marched over to the door and swung it open in a grandiose fashion, holding her slingshot firmly in her left hand. "WHO DARES GO THER-" Callie's rather pathetic attempt at sounding intimidating instantly disappeared after realising who was behind the door, leading to a loud scream of excitement. So loud in fact it managed to pull her father out of the depths of the sports section of the newspaper to go and investigate the latest source of his daughter's excitement. Callie very carefully adjusted the birthday hat atop her head before wrapping Nora in as tight a hug her tiny arms could manage and much to Adrian's surprise, put down her coveted slingshot to do so. "NORA!" Callie yelled with delight, her hat becoming squint as she did so.
Whenever Nora made her way up North to visit the occasion was usually a happy one and the family always made sure to welcome the woman with open arms. They didn't get to see her very often in comparison to some of their other family members living in a nearby village but that didn't mean they adored her visits any less. Callie in particular simply adored when Nora came to their humble farmhouse to visit and never ceased to talk the poor woman's ear off. This time was no different as mere seconds after Callie released Nora from her grasp, she launched into an excited tirade of words. "You brought a kitten! What's his name? Where'd you get him? Aw, he's so cute!" Callie squealed with delight as she made a brave yet clumsy attempt to pet the creature.
"Nora?" Callie's father questioned as he approached the door, newspaper tucked firmly under his arm. The man had to take a moment to clean his glasses just to make sure that he was seeing the woman correctly. Upon confirmation of his suspicions the mans face lit up and his pace towards the door quickened. "Callie! Give the poor thing some space!" He chuckled whilst placing his cherished newspaper down on the nearest surface."Long time no see! What brings you way up north?"

You're A Witch, Callie

Hjørdis quirked an eyebrow. Not one that was displeased or sarcastic but rather, one of amusement. The smile on her lips painted that picture rather clearly. The very girl she had come to see came barging to the door, full of excitement. It was perhaps the most beautiful thing she could see. She laughed softly, placing Jeger down before wrapping her arms around the smaller one immediately, "Callie," She greeted her in return, though her voice was at a far more reasonable level of volume given they were still standing on the porch, "Happy Birthday!". Hjørdis gave Callie a little squeeze before releasing her.
She could not help but laugh as she got question after question, "Breathe, my love!" She responded trying to get the new eleven year old to take a breath and actually allow the head of house to answer her questions, "Are we just going to stand on the porch and have the entire conversation?" She teased her younger cousin, pointing to the fact that she had yet to be invited in. Callie's excitement was living them outside on the porch, in the middle of winter!
Hearing her name being spoken, she glanced up to see her uncle. She smiled at him, "Well... I've recently moved a little closer and I believe it's a little rugrat's birthday today," She continued, pausing to take a glance at the little rugrat in question. That girl was most definitely going to up to mischief soon. Hjørdis was expecting it - she had spotted the slingshot in her hands.
It had only been a few months since she started working at Hogwarts. Of course, she had not actually had that conversation with them. Her relatives on her father's side were muggles. Other than the few that raised her, not many knew about magic. She was forced to keep it that way. This whole conversation would be... interesting, to say the least. It scared her a little to have this conversation with people close to her, in case they took it badly. However, it was important for Callie that the family understood that magic was not something to be afraid of or a reason to lock her way. Callie needed to go to a school suited to her abilities and no muggle school would cater for that.
Hjørdis was still very new to this whole 'Professor' thing. She went from working in the Ministry to suddenly becoming a teacher. It was odd, to be quite fair. But she was getting used to mischievous children. Though, a couple actually managed to melt her cold heart a little. Callie definitely held a place in her heart already and there was no doubt that the Head of Slytherin had a soft spot for her, "I also have some rather important news..." She added, allowing the uncle to know she was here for more than just a birthday celebration. There were some things that she needed to share with the family, at the very least.

You're A Witch, Callie
As Nora squeezed the young girl, Callie couldn't help but let out a giggle before rocking back and forth on the balls of her feet once released. She decided to take Nora up on her wisdom and took a deep inhale of breath before launching directly into another tirade of rambling, largely showing off her slingshot in all it's glory. At the end of her ramblings on slingshots, Callie made sure to hit her father on the head with a small pebble, prompting him to lightly whack her in the head with the newspaper. "You've moved? Where to? I bet it's somewhere super cool.." Callies train of thought was suddenly cut off by the cold suddenly nipping at her nose. "Dad why are we still standing at the door? It's cold, silly! Honestly, what would you do without my infinite wisdom..I keep this house together!" She stated with a surprising amount of confidence as she walked towards the dining room where they had been sitting a couple of moments prior.
Callie's words were only met with a mild chuckle from her father as he'd grown accustomed to the child's antics. As Callie ventured into the dining room, some quiet yelling from Adrian could likely be heard once Callie hit him directly in the eye with the slingshot. Adrian's yells were only met with laughter by Callie and a mild telling off from her mother. Her father stepped to the side of the door to allow Nora to enter the warmth of the farmhouse before closing the door and picking up his newspaper.
From the outside the farmhouse seemed to be a relic thanks to it's crumbling walls and rustic exterior, although on the inside was a surprisingly cozy family home. The walls were adorned with pictures of the entire family, which spanned the breadth of the British Isles and much further afield. These days the old farmhouse didn't see much of their family living overseas as the family largely kept in contact through calling each other. Laying beside the doorway was a pile of what Callie branded her adventuring gear, which largely consisted of wellington boots, an old jacket from a birthday a few years prior and a small telescope. The land surrounding the house was working farmland bordered by a forest, which made for a great location for Callie to explore to her hearts content. By now she'd made her own crude map of the area which lay on a nearby counter.
"Important news? Now you've got me curious, Nora." Callie's father raised an eyebrow to the woman, guessing that such news wasn't to be taken lightly. Regardless of her reasons for visiting he was beyond glad to see the woman as working on the farm didn't give him much time to see any of their extended family. "Heard much from your mother these days? Or is she still being...well, herself."" Lately his time had been entirely consumed with the expansion of operations around the farm, leaving the man with little time for family and even less time for sleep - as evidenced by the bags under his eyes. Regardless of how busy and tired he was, the man kept up a kind smile as he led Nora into the dining room where Callie was terrorising her older brother.

You're A Witch, Callie

Hjørdis laughed softly again as she listened to Callie's rambles continue. It was question after question - with a declaration of how important she was thrown in - and it was just perfect. It actually reminded Hjørdis of herself when she was younger, to be honest. A lot had happened since those days but as a child, she was always very curious, rather talkative and just constantly harassing her poor old man. Though, his love for his daughter only grew despite all of the harassing she did. Working in the army his whole life, her dad was deployed a lot of the times. She did not get to see him as much as she would have liked - especially after she started attending Uagadou. So whenever she was with him, she never left his side. She would ask him a million questions in a day.
"Honestly, I have no idea what we would all do without you, Callie!" Hjørdis teased as the girl showed off her infinite wisdom and the fact that she was the glue that kept the house together. She nodded politely, thanking her uncle as he moved aside and let her in. He looked tired, perhaps busy with work. But she made no comment on it for now. The farmhouse was just as she remembered it. Things might have moved around since she last came, she had no idea. However, it definitely still had its usual feeling of warmth, a homely feeling to it that always made her smile.
She took off her shoes at the front door, disliking walking around people's houses with outdoor shoes on. "Mhm, I guess... we call it a life update," She responded, deciding not to venture too much further into the conversation about the news yet. At least, not until both Callie's parents were present. It likely did not surprise her uncle, though. Hjørdis was a mysterious woman for the most part. She kept a lot of things hidden and vague. People usually did not realise she was doing that, as she gave away enough of a conversation that they thought she was replying to them. However, a lot of her real feelings and thoughts and life was actually a mystery to people. None of her colleagues until Hogwarts knew her birth name was Hjørdis, for example. None of them - nor even some of her family could not tell you her birthday.
It was odd however. People never really realised how little they knew about her unless they stopped to actually think about it. Her family knew her much better than anyone else, of course - as she was much more open and rarely hid things from them. In fact, the only thing she intentionally hid from the Jensens was her magic side. It was a big part of her life but she knew she could not tell them - at least, most of them. Today was the first time she was allowed to tell any of them, and it was exclusively because of Callie.
Hjørdis sighed softly, "I'm sorry to say... very much herself, unfortunately," She replied, speaking of her mother and apologising for her behaviour, yet again. If she had a galleon for every time she felt the need to apologise for her mother's personality, she would be the richest witch alive. She had reached out to the older lady when she moved to Hogwarts, now that she was finally actually going to be located in UK in a stable job. Her former jobs required a lot of travelling, never settling down in one place. Of course, she told her muggle family that she worked in the Government, the Police or the Army throughout the years - they likely suspected she was in some sort of secret intelligence service like MI6 - but the truth was, it was a foreign Ministry, as an Auror for some years before becoming an Unspeakable in the British Ministry. "She's doing well, however. Same old Muirenn, I guess." Hjørdis always referred to her father, as 'dad'. She even called Mark and Ellen, 'uncle' and 'aunt' rather than just by their first names. She was quite a formal person in some ways... but her mother often got called by her first time, which was actually a good giveaway of how they were not close.
Entering the dining room, following after Callie, she could only imagine that the girl had been up to some mischief again. The slingshot still in her hand, Adrian's expression, and the aunt's words were a good indication of what likely happened, "I see nothing's changed," She replied with a small chuckle as she moved to hug her aunt and Adrian to greet them, "Lovely to see you all again."

You're A Witch, Callie
Callie's father couldn't help but let out a chuckle as Nora called out to his daughter, knowing that Nora's words would only bolster the child's already sky high confidence. The prospect of a life update was one that sparked the mans curiosity as while such things weren't exactly a rarity they weren't commonplace either. While he was curious to delve deeper into the meaning behind Nora's words, he elected to rest her likely purposeful vagueness until they joined the others in the dining room. Certain things about Nora's life she had to keep vague and while it had taken some getting used to, they'd respected such things for years out of love for the woman. However something about this felt...different and he couldn't quite put his finger on it. The mention of Murienn caused Mark to let out a sudden chuckle as the woman never failed to amuse him. Neither he nor Ellen particularly liked the woman, especially his wife after an..unfortunate encounter with the two a number of years ago regarding himself. To put things simply when things came down to it Ellen was not a woman to trifle with, something which Murienn learned the hard way. Mark and Ellen didn't mind their lack of contact with the woman anyway as the pair much preferred the company of Nora, their children included.
"Nora! How are you, my darling!" Ellen's face lit up upon seeing the young woman enter the room and extended her arms wide in greeting. After greeting her with a tight hug Ellen cupped Nora's face in her hands, as if inspecting how the woman had changed since her last visit. "Still as beautiful as the last time I saw you!" She chimed with a bright smile plastered across her face whilst moving to sit down at the table, gesturing for Nora to do the same. It wasn't long after Ellen went to sit down that Nora was met by another hug from Adrian, albeit an awkward one for the boy currently going through the trials and tribulations of being thirteen. Regardless of his teenagerism, Adrian was more than happy to see Nora and to receive a moment of respite from his sister's reign of terror.
Callie meanwhile had taken up residence at the head of the table and carefully placed her slingshot at the table, occasionally threatening to hit Adrian with it only to be shot down by her mother. Whilst her father took a seat opposite Callie she swung her feet back and forth and occasionally kicked her brother underneath the table. Whilst her mother was distracted Callie and Adrian also managed to sneak even more chocolate from a bowl filled with various sweets in the centre of the table, something that would likely come back to haunt Mark and Ellen. "How has things been with you then, Nora? Busy as ever I take it?" Ellen asked with a pleasant smile, curious about how one of her favourite family members had been doing this past while. Mark on the other hand had laid his precious newspaper down on the table and occasionally sneaked a few glances on the article he was reading, only to receive a mild slap on the wrist from his wife for doing so.
"So what's this life update of yours then? The suspense is killing me!" Mark exclaimed after giving up trying to read his newspaper for the time being. "Or do I need to pester you about the ol' love life before you get talking?" He teased with a wide grin across his face, one very similar to Callie's signature toothy smile.

You're A Witch, Callie

After her mother had met Ellen and Mark, Hjørdis made a mental note to never introduce her to anyone who she actually liked and wanted in her life. It was just far too awkward. Perhaps she ought to introduce her mother to the more annoying colleagues she had... Griffith came to mind. That would actually be kind of entertaining, if it was not for the fact that everyone who realise that Muirenn and Hjørdis were related.
"Well, thank you," She replied, almost on autopilot with her response. She smiled, accepting the compliment. The truth was Hjørdis was arrogant enough to know she was beautiful. Perhaps even spending far too much time in a haircare or skincare routine, just to remain as youthful as she could. If anyone would believe it, she would happily pretend to be twenty five or younger for the rest of her life. Family, however, would know otherwise.
Hugging both of the remaining family members, Hjørdis followed her aunt's example and took a seat. She could not help but chuckle a little watching the sibling duo. She never had any siblings herself - though she would have loved to have one - so it was always nice to see how the pair interacted. Though, it would seem that Adrian was being far more tolerant today than usual. She was about to answer aunt's question when she heard her uncle's outburst. It was kind of amusing to be honest. Well, until he mentioned her love life. Oh gosh, that was a conversation she did not want to be pestered about, "No no, no need for that," She calmed her uncle down, before he started asking if she was getting married any time soon or even planning to settle down!
She paused for a moment. Normally, she would go straight to the student, talking about them. It was unnecessary to bother bringing herself up in the conversation. This time, was a little different. Hjørdis was not sure what the best way to have this conversation with family was but they needed to hear it so she spoke, using the opening that they had provided her with. "Well... Actually, things have started to settle down a little," She replied to her aunt before expanding on it, "I decided to go for a slightly more... stable job, shall we say? The former was a bit too much travelling and far too hectic. I mentioned earlier but I have moved to Scotland, in fact, settling down in a little village that pretty quaint. In fact, I actually bought a place there," She continued, touching upon her newly bought house in Hogsmeade, "And I work as a Professor nearby. It's... partly why I'm here, actually. It would be a good place for Callie to attend in the coming September," She explained.
Hjørdis the teacher... It was kind of a very different sort of vocation than she had ever imagined doing. She did not have much teaching experience nor did she work with children. It was, rather out of the blue, in fact. However, being Head of House luckily met less time teaching and more time managing the house - which was another headache in it's own right. She paused for a moment to see their initial reaction.

You're A Witch, Callie
"Finally settling down a bit, eh? Who's to say what's next?" Mark wiggled his eyebrows to tease Nora further before letting out a bemused chuckle. His amusement was met with a swift kick to the shin from his wife which quickly shut off his teasing of Nora. "Professor Jensen? It suits you, Nora." Mark noted with a proud smile briefly dancing across his features. When it came to Nora's line of work he knew very little so hearing about such things in some detail was surprising to say the least. If anything Nora sharing such things only heightened his suspicions that something much larger was about to happen.
"You've bought a house? Oh you should've told us sooner darling, we would've got you a housewarming present!" Ellen piped up after Mark was forced to quit with his teasing of Nora. The news was rather surprising to Ellen who had grown so accustomed to Nora bouncing around from place to place so long but she was happy for the woman nonetheless.
As her father teased Nora, Callie had briefly zoned out of the conversation after getting distracted by her brother. Whilst the adults spoke the two children were continuing to sneak more sweets from the bowl in the middle of the table before eating the fruits of their labour at rapid pace. It wasn't until Callie's name was suddenly mentioned that the pair were caught and received a mild telling off from their mother, who pulled the now half empty bowl out of reach. The two children let out a groan of disappointment as they watched the bowl get pulled away but Callie's attention soon came back around to Nora. "New school? But I thought I was going to secondary school in September?" She asked curiously, rather confused at the prospect of a new school. After all she thought she'd simply be making the step up to high school alongside the rest of her friends.
"What kind of school is it though? If it's a private one I'm not certain that's in our realm of possibility right now. We're expanding the farm you see, moving into different areas of business." Mark noted with a hint of concern laced in his words. Lately the majority of the family's finances were wrapped up in the farm as a result of the list of upgrades and expansions now underway. Such expansions and upgrades were keeping Mark awake at all hours of the day and adding private school fees onto his list of expenses was a panic inducing thought. Ellen seemed to share the same concern but wasn't completely vocal about it. Instead her concern was painted across her face at the prospect of stretching things even further.

You're A Witch, Callie

Hjørdis looked at Mark, a playful narrowing of her eyes on her expression as though to say 'ha ha, very funny' in definitely the most sarcastic way possible. "Work wise, uncle," She retorted, putting a lot of emphasis on the word 'work' in the sentence. Marriage, children, none of the things that he hinted at where on her mind. She was in a relationship - not that she had mentioned it to them - but it was a very 'on' and 'off' one that was kind of running its course with Hjørdis realising how it was definitely not going to work in the long term. She would likely end up killing the man if she married him. It was far safer not to marry him. Well, for him.
The fact that she bought the house, despite him living so close by - as he was also in Scotland - spoke wonders about her relationship. He offered for her to move in. She did not. It painted a picture of how she visioned the long term to go.
She nodded, "Ah, I apologise. I bought it last month during term time and... Well I'm still decorating and setting it up," Hjørdis explained to her aunt. The truth was, the lady barely took a day off work. Why would she? She had very little else to do in life. Most of her days off went in visiting relatives and that was about it. Unfortunately, there was a limit to how much she could do that for fear of overstaying her welcome. Her house ended up taking a little bit of time with Hjørdis actually having to buy everything herself. Given how much she travelled before, she did not carry a lot with her. For the first time, she was actually getting furniture. It was pleasant.
"It is a secondary school, 11-18. And the costs are minimal, same as with any other school. Students are required to get a few bits before hand, such as their uniform or textbooks but we provide full boarding all year around otherwise." She explained quickly, to ease her uncle and aunt's tension. It had visibly grown on their expressions and in their words. She kind of hated that. It explained why Mark looked tired - he had been working harder on the expansion. Hjørdis casually dropped in the fact it was full boarding - providing three meals a day and accommodation to all students for free. It was actually a lot cheaper than they realised for what they were getting.
However, that was definitely not the reason she wanted her cousin to attend."It's a place for students like Callie..." Hjørdis continued, before swallowing and looking directly at her cousin rather than talking to her parents the whole time, "Callie, let me ask you... have you experienced anything... unusual when you were angry, upset or afraid? Something you cannot explain, that defied your logic?" She asked, turning the conversation to the child in question. Hjørdis could have spoken entirely to her parents about it but what was the point? Callie needed to be the one to understand her abilities first and foremost. She turned to her parents, "Any odd incidents that you're not entirely sure actually happened or could not quite believe?" She asked them, wondering if they had witnessed anything.

You're A Witch, Callie
"A month ago? Honey please don't tell me you're overworking yourself as per usual.." Ellen noted with a sympathetic smile before turning to chastise her children for kicking each other underneath the table. Mark listened intently to what Nora had to say regarding the school and found his interest piqued by the prospect of full boarding, although not having Callie in the house would be odd to say the least.
Callie's attention however was elsewhere until her name was suddenly mentioned by Nora once more. At the sudden mention of her name Callie got startled and ended up knocking over a cup of water. To the horror of her mother, Callie simply mopped up the water with her sleeve as she listened intently to Nora's questioning. Students like her? Callie always thought she was decidedly ordinary if you discounted the clumsiness that haunted her at every turn. Although at the mention of something happening that was decidedly unexplained her mind immediately went to the events that transpired in the forest merely days ago. It happened around noon during one of Callie's explorations of the forest alongside her older brother when the pair decided to try and cross a creek. The decision was a poor one considering it had just stopped raining and the log they aimed to cross over was extremely slippery, although children don't tend to have much of a sense of danger. Adrian managed to make it across unhindered but Callie being the clutz she was ended up slipping and falling. She braced herself for the cold waters below, only to find herself hovering mere inches above the loud rushing of the water. Other weird, unexplainable things had been happening since then including the sudden flowering of a daisy when she was making crowns the previous evening. Perhaps she was special afterall? Or maybe this was all some kind of trick. Callie wasn't too sure either way.
"Well yeah why? Me and Adrian were out exploring the forest and I slipped on a log but I didn't hit the water! How cool is that? I just floated! You know, like out of those old movies that dad watches-"
"Hey! Those movies are not old..." Mark interrupted to defend himself.
"They're suuuper old! Just like you!" Callie teased and stuck a tongue out at her father, earning a chuckle from her brother. "Although I thought it was just a dream..or some kind of weird and funky daydream!" Callie shrugged the entire experience over rather quickly and went back to swinging her feet back and forth. "How'd you know that though? Are you psychic?" Callie gasped rather suddenly and pointed an accusatory finger at Nora. "Or maybe you're a spy!" Her accusation was entirely cut off but Callie's giggles.
