The sky was duskier as the sun melted into the mountains. The darker it got, the more eerie it felt. There was an outbreak in the muggle world and here Maya was, safe in the walls of Hogwarts. She, a muggle-born, felt the strain as though she were in the midst of it all. Safe with magic by her side there were those who were not so lucky. Those being her family.

Living in Israel, where a large case of the virus had hit, her family are stuck in the terror of who can be next. Maya knew her father was not a healthy man and her mother was past the age of safety. She was unsure of her younger siblings, however, and how they were taking in safety precautions. Were they living with Ima (mom) and Abba (dad) to help keep them inside by getting things they need or were they spread out around the country? Unknown of her sibling's addresses, she felt it was only right to send a letter to her parents to see how they were doing, especially her mother, whom she was closest to growing up as she helped her do many of the chores around the house and raise her siblings.

The best way to know was to be the first to send a letter to them. Her best bet was to send an owl. It would be a long flight for the creature, but they were very diligent birds from what she had learned. She hoped that the owl will make it in time to her parents across Europe.

Maya made her way to the Owlry, parchment, ink and quill in hand, at the top of a tower within the castle. Up the spiral staircase, she found herself in the dark, windy tower. Although a bit chilly, it felt just right to Maya for she was cozy in her deep red robe. When she walked in, she took out her wand from inside her robe and made a slight movement with it. No words were uttered from her mouth, and yet, light was created at the tip. From the looks of it, no one was around. It was peaceful.

Maya looked around and found a decently clean space to begin her writing. Sitting down, she flattened her parchment onto the stone ground and began writing.
,אמא ואבא

לא שמעתי ממך. אני מקווה ששניכם מצליחים. אני בטוח. אני מקווה שגם שאר בני המשפחה בטוחים.
-אני
She did not know what else to say. She felt guilty. Here she was, free of the fear and pain of the pandemic. If she got it, she was able to receive a potion that will heal it. Them? Not so much. Not unless the Ministry was willing to secretly share. In past pandemics and epidemics, sharing was out of the question. Why would this one be any different?

Mom and Dad,

I have not heard from you. I hope you both are doing well. I am safe. I hope the rest of the family is safe as well. I-

[quote]It wasn't really like Boniface had anyone to write to, other than Rosalind. He was ashamed to admit that the Rosalind who had just re-entered his life was not the same as the one who he knew during his school days, but she was carrying his child, so despite their new, mutual agreement that they're better off as friends (which, it's a little late to be realizing that), he was curious about the development of his son, who was currently inside of her. Rosalind had made it clear that she was currently a gypsy, and a child would tie her down, so it appeared that this baby would be dumped on Boniface and then she would disappear again. Not that he minded, but as a single father who lived in Hogwarts year-round... Well, up until his kid turned 11, he'd have to find something to do with him.

Elijah had graciously volunteered, though Boniface was wary, because Elijah was a fairly new addition to his life. Not that he didn't trust him, but he didn't know him. They had only known each other for a few months, despite being half-brothers, they hadn't grown up together, nor even known of one another's existence up until recently, so that didn't do much for the Scottish man. Still, it was his best hope, and apparently Elijah had a kid (who Elijah didn't know about), so theree was that.

Making his way to the owlery, Boniface knew that he needed to come up with something. He only had a few months, and his child would be born right as the school year starts, which did him absolutely no good. How did these professors with kids do it? He would never understand.

But it appears his spot was already taken. Someone was here, writing a letter. It wasn't a student- Boniface quickly recognized the figure as Maya Galim, the professor of Muggle Studies. Not knowing what to do, he shifted his weight a few times, hoping to not interrupt a personal moment. He didn't want to be rude or invasive, but this was also a public space, so if anyone was hoping for privacy, they shouldn't have picked here, of all places. Eventually, Boniface settled on clearing his throat to make his presence known. "I'm not interrupting, I hope?" He called out, still feeling a little awkward. He could have easily just ignored her, went about his business, maybe given her a polite nod of acknowledgment in the event that they exchanged glances, but he felt as though that would be rude. She was his colleague, who he had barely met albeit, but his aim was always to be friendly with those in the workplace. He didn't wish to have qualms with any of his peers.

This was expected of him. Boniface was one of agreeable nature; he had been since his school days. Though relatively reserved, even now, he never found it easy to be rude to others. There was some sass that he had picked up, especially dealing with students of the more... colorful personalities, but he was never rude. He had known the stereotypes of Scottish men; boisterous, excited, outgoing, there were more synonyms for "boisterous". That just wasn't Boniface. He aimed to be agreeable.

What would anyone say to another during this time? Hope they are well? That was obvious. Maya felt like her letter was turning more and more generic with each word she scribbled. What more would she say to her parents? Maya was not as close to them anymore. She left them when she was eleven years old and when they learned about why she left, they disowned her. Maya's father especially. He was a very religious man who wouldn't accept anyone who was different from his ways.

Taking in a deep breath, Maya crumpled up her letter into her hand. A part of her wanted to throw it out the window to never see it again, but there was stick a small part of her that wanted to keep it close. She opened the paper and folded it four times. She then opened her robe and placed it into her inside pocket. Maya took out another piece of paper. Should she start over?

"I'm not interrupting, I hope?"

Slightly jumping from her spot, she turned her head to the side to see a figure standing before her. It was the Herbology professor, Boniface MacTavish. How long had he been there? Did he see her contemplate her note? Good thing I didn't throw it out the window, she joked to herself.

"Not at all. Quite the opposite," she said, actually relieved that he interrupted her moment of figuring out how to write a letter to her family.

Maya remembered meeting MacTavish and having a good first conversation with him. They were at the Masquerade Ball together. She had no idea what had happened to him in the room. However, one thing was for sure: Maya was not sharing with him about what happened because of her. She would rather keep that tad bit to herself... And Caradoc.

"What brings you from the grounds all the way up to the highest tower?" she asked, curious if he was also writing a letter himself to family. Did he also have family who was struggling in the muggle world? Maybe friends?

Maya remembered one thing about him from so many months ago: he was easy to talk to. She had no idea why, but she remembered sharing so much about herself to him. Perhaps it was because they were hidden by their masks and it made everything so mysterious... But even now, Maya felt like she could share with him her reasons of why she is here and what she was feeling at this moment. Of course, she fought hard not to.
