The stick that had been serving as Ethen's makeshift handle erupted in a fantastic array of splinters and dashed hopes. His eyes widened at the complete and utter failure of his creation, he knew it was rudimentary at best but it seemed somehow impressive in its destruction. The fact remained, however, that he would need to return to the drawing board. He was sure that Atlas had learned some spell by now that would take the task with ease but there was something of a rush that came with building his own little tools. He long had an affinity for whittling and carving things with his small pocket knife but he thought he would try stepping up his woodworking.

The makeshift axe he had cobbled together was more or less a relatively sharp rock tied to the end of a stick. A stick that apparently would explode with even the smallest of strikes against its first bit of wood. There were likely apes that hade more tool making ability than Ethen but he was determined. This was only his eighth attempt at putting together a little hand ax for wood chopping. Perhaps it was a pursuit destined to fail but Ethen's stuborness would have him there all night if that was what it took to even cut a sliver of the wood. He was admittedly growing tired of the long day under the sun piecing things together.

Wiping a meandering bead of sweat from his brow, Ethen took a seat at the base of a nearby tree and leaned his head back resting it against the rough bark. He felt he deserved a short break and the tree seemed particularly comfortable as he was surrounded by the evidence of his failed axes. Slowly Ethen began softly humming a tune from his childhood. His eyes remained closed as he began softly singing along from memory. "At the rising of the moon...at the rising of the moon. For the pikes must be together..." Softly Ethen continued to carry the somber tune. He always had enjoyed singing as one of the few things he was good at but rarely found opportunities to actually take a moment to just relax and sing. But under the shade of the tree and surrounded by failure, he felt strangely at ease.

Atlas had been searching for Ethen all over the castle ever since she had been asked by a fellow Hufflepuff, Lydia Cooper, to help plan and execute a secret ball unbeknownst to the professors and headmaster and Atlas knew Ethen would be able to help her elaborate on her plans and help her with making fireworks.

She had looked in all the usual places, the common room, the Great Hall, the Abandoned Toilets and yet she hadn't found her best friend or a snack trail showing where he had been. She was starting to get worried, in fear he may have stumbled into the Black Lake or Forbidden Forest in search of Acromantula babies as she wandered out to the grounds pushing past students as she sprinted towards the forest seeing a shadow of a boy hunched over as she heaved a sigh of relief walking towards the boy.

"There you are Tebo!" She called out when she was close enough for him to hear. "I've been looking all over for you...What are you doing?" She continued watching the forest out of the corner of her high as she watched to make sure no spiders were looking back at her.

"I got us a pretty cool gig and I figured you'd want in! It involves fire and pyrotechnics!" She exclaimed lowering her voice quickly as she realized it was still a secret to the rest of the school and she didn't want any snitches to overhear her plan.

Ethen was still lost in his singing and the tranquility of the calm day by the time he heard the familiar loud voice of Atlas. He immediately halted his singing and raised an eyebrow at the girl as she called him a Tebo. It was a common term she used to describe him but he had to admit it was fitting at times. "What does it look like," Ethen said gesturing to all of the splintered sticks and failed axes. "I am building of course. Something a rice monkey wouldn't understand," he teased closing his eyes and leaning his head back against the trunk of the tree.

Ethen wasn't interested in what ever work Atlas had planned...until she mentioned fire. Immediately his eyes reopened and he sat back up with renewed interest. "Pyro you say... Well, color me intrigued. I am quite an expert at making things explode as you can see," he said proudly as he was still surrounded by the debris of his failures. "Why are whispering," Ethen said dramatically lowering his voice and slouching forward. "Are you... trying to blow up the castle so we don't have anymore homework?... I'll admit I have thought about it but how will we get enough bang into the foundation? What kinds of explosives are we talking about here? Oof... we are really going to need to plan this out," Ethen sighed as he considered the logistics of leveling an entire castle.

Scratching his head softly, Ethen gave another soft sigh. "Well you can count me in Atlas. You know I am always there to help you cause mayhem," he said with a renewed determination.

With just the thought of pyro, Ethen spiraled down a mischievous plot to blow up the castle as Atlas giggled loving his enthusiasm and imagination but she knew she had to steer him off the plan quickly otherwise he would actually go through with it and secretly she liked the homework and teachers.

"No no Tebo...we are not blowing up the school. I uhhh was asked to help with a ball. I know balls are stupid and for frilly people but the person was specifically requesting a mischievous person or two for that matter to help with fireworks, lighting and you know...spectacle!" She informed still watching around her for prying ears.

"I figure we are the best mischief dealers around and with the two of us working together I'm positive it will be memorable." She continued trying to hide her nerves of actually going to the ball with Ethen.

"So if we are going to be ready by the ball we need to start working now and we have to be sneaky about it because one, it is still a secret to the students until we get the word around and two, I'm not sure how the professors would feel about us doing pyro. So what ideas do you have Tebo?"
