What's Expected of Us
Adam yelled in frustration and swept his books off the table in an angry, considerably dramatic strike. Putting his elbows down on the table, he let his forehead drop down to his propped-up hands, closing his eyes and just sitting in silence. He knew he was probably drawing a lot of unwanted attention, and already a voice was emerging inside of his head, scolding himself for letting his feelings get the better of him. It was only his first year, the introductory year. Adam shouldn't be feeling so far behind, so lost already -- that was for O.W.L.s, right? He was lucky he didn't have to go through any of the grueling test practice that his brother had already undertaken, and would have to suffer through again come N.E.W.T time. But at this moment, he couldn't help feeling that he was falling out of the loop. What if he couldn't keep up with any of his homework? What if his grades started to drop? Would he even be able to make it through his first year at all?
He was sure that other students probably felt the same way. All logic told him to shake it off, get through it, and just try to enjoy his first year as much as possible, because that's what the others were doing. However, there was one small problem: he didn't quite care for logic. Taking a minute to just stare at the empty table, he dreaded the return to classes and homework.
"Bloody hell," he murmured, just for the feeling of saying it. Let someone reprimand him for poor manners. It was just one more thing to shoulder. He saw one of the paintings on the wall glance down at him disapprovingly, and in return he narrowed his eyes at it and stuck his tongue out. The painting, an older woman in a long pink dress, gasped in indignation and rushed out of her frame, probably gone to complain about Adam's rudeness to a friendly portrait. Adam laughed. At least the paintings could always keep him entertained.
Picking up his fallen work slowly from the floor, Adam sighed and prepared to delve back into it. Unfortunately, he found that he just couldn't maintain his focus, which led to another swell in anxiety and caused him to slam his book shut for the second time in five minutes. A new record, he thought bitterly to himself. Getting up from his table, Adam looked around at all the other working students, and wondered if they were going through the same thing.

What's Expected of Us
Cecily was already finding it hard to concentrate with the warmth of the huge fireplace just to her left making her drowsy, not to mention the fellow Ravenclaw making so much noise just across the Hall and waking her up again. She was vainly trying to focus on her studies-- she hadn't had time to do some of her homework due to Quidditch tryouts, so she was a bit behind. She knew that she needed to get her work done in the next few minutes or else she would never finish it. She would just go to her classes again and get more work, at which point she would either fall behind on a loop of still trying to make up unfinished work, or just take the zero for her missing work and still be behind. There was no winning unless she did her work now.
But, again, it was hard to do so with all that racket. It was really getting on her nerves.
Cecily closed her eyes and took a deep breath, calming herself before she did something stupid, like just stand up and scream at the boy. She exhaled and opened her eyes to quietly close her books and ink-pot. She stood up, fully intending to tell the blond boy (she thought his name was Adam, so she would continue to call him that in her head) to please, keep it down. She was making her way towards where he sat when he slammed his book closed again, making her roll her eyes and let out another breath.
"Excuse me," she said pointedly, drawing herself up to her full-- albeit short-- height, now looking up at Adam (for he had stood up since she had walked over here). "I am also trying to do my work, and I really need to get it done as soon as I possibly can, so why don't we help each other out? You stop muttering and slamming your books everywhere, and I'll stop coming over here to bother you. Does that sound all right to you?"

Isabella watched the boy as he swiped all of his books off the table in a (very dramatic) swipe. She grinned to herself quietly and turned back to her book. Isabella herself was struggling with some difficult homework. That was exactly how she felt confused and more confused.
Just as she was about to give up on her fairly complicated homework, a pretty, petite girl with dark blonde hair slid over to the boy and started talking to him like a teacher would to a student, except more gentle, more understanding.
"Excuse me," she said pointedly, "I am also trying to do my work, and I really need to get it done as soon as I possibly can, so why don't we help each other out? You stop muttering and slamming your books everywhere, and I'll stop coming over here to bother you. Does that sound all right to you?"
Isabella slid over to the two students and smiled weakly at the pretty girl.
'Do you reckon you could help me as well? This homework is making no sense to me either. My name's Isabella by the way, but you can call me Bella, that's what everyone else does'

Adam glared at the short girl that had come over just to chew him out, apparently. Typical Ravenclaw. Although, he was a Ravenclaw too. All members of his House had a reputation for being intelligent, and school-savvy, but the other, sharper side of their wit was often ignored. It clearly hadn't skipped this girl. Adam wondered what that said about how he acted around the castle. He'd have to look into that in more depth later. At present, he was still trying to think up a snappy retort to the hostile new girl when a second one slid over.
This one looked nicer, and sounded nicer, too. She was a Gryffindor, or at least, that's what Adam could tell from her tie. He smiled at her when she introduced herself, deciding that the nicer new girl warranted more attention than the other Ravenclaw girl. "Hey, Bella!" he replied. "I'm not sure how much help I'll really be, but, uh.....I'll try!" He straightened his supplies back out and slid them over to make room for the new arrival, and then remembered who had approached the table first. Raising his eyebrow at her, he continued, "Does that sound all right to you?"

'Yeah, that would help heaps. I'll show you what I'm doing'
Isabella slid her books over to where the boy was sitting and flicked over to the page in her book which she was studying. She then grabbed a piece of parchment to write her notes down and continued talking to him. Not only did he look like he might be able to help her with her homework, he also looked really, really friendly. Plus, he was in Ravenclaw, which was just an added bonus. Ravenclaws always knew what they were doing.
'I'm supposed to write down the 12 uses of dragon blood, but I can't even remember one of them. I think it's supposed to be in this chapter, but I can't seem to figure it out. What were you getting all worked up about? 'Cause that was exactly what I felt like doing'

Cecily watched as the new girl-- Bella, a Gryffindor, apparently-- sidled over with her books and parchment and inserted herself into the conversation, asking for help on her homework. The 12 uses of dragon blood? Cecily couldn't remember learning that yet, but maybe it could be found somewhere in the heavy textbook Bella had dropped onto the table next to Adam. Adam himself still seemed baffled by Cecily's passive-aggressive sass, looking totally lost as he searched for a comeback. He seemed to forget about it, though, when Bella began to speak again.
Adam told her he would try to help, but ended with a surprising dagger-sharp retort and glare aimed at her, asking Cecily for permission. Cecily was taken aback by the amount of venom in his voice, but managed to keep her composure. She met his glare with an intense stare of her own.
"Well, I suppose it's alright, as long as it serves a constructive purpose. Unlike sweeping your books off of your table," Cecily added with a smirk, before turning to Bella with a friendlier smile. "Sure, we'd be happy to try to help you. Dragon blood, you say? I'm sure we can find the answer somewhere in your book."
