Day One
The train from Leeds to King's Cross had taken just over two hours. Charlie and his parents had stayed in a hotel for the night - his sisters, Rebecca and Emily had already begun their muggle schooling and had been unable to join them - where the young wizard barely slept a wink. He was excited, eager to begin his new life come the dawn. Charlie had lied in bed, eyes wide open as he stared at the clock: "In just ten hours... just eight hours... five hours more..." he'd found himself thinking. He should have been cracking open his new textbooks, that's what his parents would have wanted had they known he was still asleep, but against their wishes, he had barely looked at them since the day they went to Diagon Alley, choose instead to spend his last days of summer with his friends, playing video games and swimming at his friend's pool.Backdated: September 1, 2019
When the sun rose, Charlie woke his parents before showering and dressing. He was ready to go before they even finished their morning tea. He'd never been one to be excited about school before, and he was certain the feeling would wear off when it actually began, but this was a school of magic after all. Who wouldn't be excited about that?
A short drive later, the Cutting family found themselves at King's Cross station once again. His parents would see him off at the mysterious Platform 9 3/4 before taking their own train back home to Leeds. With his trunk loaded up on a trolley, Charlie pushed ahead of his family, looking for the unlisted platform. There were no signs hung about - of course there weren't, they couldn't just go advertising the entrance to Wizardland to the whole world - but thankfully he had been given instruction. On the day his letter came, the witch delivering it had told him exactly where to find the platform, and he was still nervous to try it. Diagon Alley had been one thing, tapping bricks to open a passage way (or more accurately, a barkeep doing it for them) was far better than running at the wall with blind faith.
"Stay close," he reminded his parents, having been warned that muggles wouldn't be able to get through on their own. He lined his cart in front of the wall between platforms nine and ten, and they took off, starting at a casual stroll that quickened. The wall was getting closer and closer, they were going to crash, they were in the wrong place, they were...
The sound of a train's whistle filled his ears before he realized what had happened. Charlie emerged on another platform, a large scarlet steam engine standing before him. He stared at it, eyes and mouth both agape with wonder. "Wow..."
After taking in his surroundings and loading his trunk onto the train, Charlie came back down onto the platform to say his goodbyes. His mother embarrassingly kissed him repeatedly on the cheek as she cried, his father gave him some long-winded speech about responsibility, and as the station guard guided them back out into the muggle world, Charlie wiped his cheek as he stepped back up onto the train and found the compartment he had stashed his belongings into, settling in for the long ride ahead.

Day One

The Eilertsen family were late again, it was starting to become somewhat of a mandatory thing, to arrive just as something closed. It didn’t matter what it was, punctuality was certainly not their strong point. Luckily for Lilia she would be arriving at the train station by side-along-apparition. Lilia knew that if they took any other means of transport she would miss the train all together. Brushing through her light blonde longs she hastily wolfed down a slice of toast, her trunk had been packed the night before and her mother had put some extra food and galleons for the train journey ahead of her. “Mama, Papa, sa megem!” Let’s go, Lilia said in Romanian for if they didn’t speed up, they would miss the train. Lilia grabbed her things and her father took her trunk, she took her father's arm and immediately felt herself squeeze down into what felt like an uncomfortable little hole.
Lilia never would get used to apparating, she understood that much; she’d much rather fly but rules were rules, the statue of secrecy was there for a reason. She took a look at her surroundings and found herself in a small alleyway in King’s Cross Station. She and her parents took a look at the time and briskly made their way to platform 9 and 10. If there was one thing Lilia was excited about, it was running into a wall. However absurd that may have sounded, it was simply the only way to the Hogwarts Express and Lilia’s father had said it was always fun. So now, Lilia too was speeding towards the wall that separated the wizarding world and the muggle one, her father was behind her pushing the trolley with all her things. Bracing herself for impact she closed her eyes expecting her father to be tricking her, however nothing happened. Lilia came to a halt and opened her eyes, revealing a scarlet steam train.
Her father chuckled at her initial bewilderment before turning Lilia to face him and his wife; “Now Lia, not too much trouble okay?” Lilia smirked, like her father could talk, he was always getting into trouble, his recklessness was what attracted Lilia’s mother in the first place. “George, fii serios” Lilia’s mother retorted, she still found English quite hard but she was certainly getting better; “Floarea mea de crin, make sure to write to us as much as you can, I know how busy Hogwarts can be.”, Lilia’s mother had always called Lilia her lily flower and it brought new found comfort. Lilia hugged her mother and father, she heard a whistle from the train conductor signalling it was time to go, she grabbed her trunk and ran towards the train but not before yelling out to her parents; “you should have checked my pockets!” She could see her parents collectively sigh, Lilia’s pockets were deep with merchandise from Weasley Wizard Wheezes as well as a variety of sweets. that she had bought with her parents the weekend before.
The main downside to being late was that there were no empty compartments but Lilia figured to choose one with only one current occupant, even the train ride had some adventure to offer! However, Lilia couldn’t find any compartments that only had one person currently in them. That was until she made her way near the end of the train, half-ready to just sit in the corridor and see if she got told off. Peering into a final compartment she saw a boy who looked like a first year sitting all by himself, Lilia smiled in happiness. Nodding at her achievements she said to herself, and that is what muggles called a Victory Royale. Knocking on the compartment door, she slid it open slightly and sat down opposite the boy. She did this all quickly, not giving the boy a chance to protest, if she were completely honest Lilia just wanted a place to sit, she wasn’t too bothered by the boy sitting in front of her. However, she was the one who had come rudely into the compartment not the other way round. Her mother would be in fits with her manners but she wasn’t there to scold anyone.
She smiled at the boy and reached out her hand to him, her father had told her it was polite. “Sorry for interrupting you, I needed a place to sit, although I wanted to see how long I could stay in the corridors before getting caught.” On the mention of that, Lilia began moving around quite loudly, totally forgetting that in a handshake the other person had to shake her hand. She began emptying her pockets on the seat next to her, a whole flurry of objects came out (she had asked her father to magically enlarge them), from canary creams to chocolate frogs, she had racked up quite a pile. To get out the remaining items from her pockets she stood up on the seat and began quite violently shaking the contents of her pockets. Once she was satisfied she sat down again, careful not to ruin any of her belongings. Turning her attention back to the boy she brushed her blonde hair out her face and smiled again softly; “I’m Lilia Eilertsen, what’s your name?”

Day One
Charlie watched out the window as the platform began to empty out. A few stragglers and latecomers still remained, but it seemed for the most part that most of the students had boarded the train and most parents had left, not to see their children again until the Christmas holidays arrived. Looking down at his watch, he could see that their wasn't much time left before the train would pull out of the station, and they'd be on their way. How long would the trip last? An hour? Two? He hadn't eaten much for breakfast at the hotel, just grabbing a pastry to scarf down in the car on the way back to King's Cross. Would they make it to Hogwarts in time for lunch? Or would that be served on the train? The train they had taken from Leeds to London had had a restaurant car in it, perhaps there was on here as well? He'd have to take a look around once they got moving. Until then, Charlie kicked his feet up on the seat opposite, lying back best he could, as he hadn't gotten much sleep the night before. At least if they were in for a long ride, he'd have plenty of time for a kip. The fact that he had managed to find a compartment to himself would surely help with that as well.
With his eyes closed, he began to imagine all the wonderful things he would get to do at school: casting spells, flying a broomstick, perhaps even seeing a dragon. In one of the few times he did flip through the pages of his new books, he did come to learn that dragons were very much real, and not creatures of myth as he had been led to believe.
When the sound of the compartment door rolling open caught his ear, the thoughts of school left his mind completely, he opened his eyes and looked immediately to the door to see who was coming in, but there was nobody there. That was when he registered in the corner of his eye, that someone had joined him and was now sitting across the small aisle. A girl, blond hair, was now sitting with him.
"Hello," he said, more in confusion than in a true greeting. She'd sure been quick to the seat, and Charlie, as not to be rude, brought his feet down so she wouldn't have to sit next to them. "Sorry 'bout that."
“Sorry for interrupting you, I needed a place to sit, although I wanted to see how long I could stay in the corridors before getting caught.”
Before getting caught? Did that mean they weren't to wander the corridors of the train? Was it for safety or were the hiding something? And what would happen if they were caught in the corridors? The thoughts started to race in his mind, exciting him, and he felt a calling, a yearning to explore the the whole train. "Wait, no, it's just that they don't want to cause congestion," he finally thought rationally. In all his thinking, he hadn't noticed that the girl had offered out her hand for a handshake until she took it back and started emptying her pockets. How she had managed to fit so much inside was beyond him, but his eyes widened at everything coming out. It was as if the girl had been holding half a sweets shop in them! When at last she settled back down, she spoke again, offering her name: Lilia Eilertsen.
"I'm Charlie, Charlie Cutting," he replied with a grin. "Nice to meet you, Lilia."

Day One

Lilia didn’t fare well with boring things, she got all fidgety and imagined herself in all other situations apart from the dreary one that she was in. The girl knew that the train journey was long, weren’t Scotland and England like two different countries? Lilia never succeeded in Geography, it wasn't her fault that a river decided to have a name, it would be easier to just call it river, she thought sullenly. But alas the world did not agree with what Lilia thought were revolutionary ideas. Regardless, the train journey would be long and tedious and then the wait to be sorted would be long and tedious and then the feast would be long and tedious. At least, Lilia thought, she had an array of items that would hopefully get her through the boredom of the train. Lilia would have much rather side-along-apparated than be stuck in this metal cylinder for eight or more hours.
The boy opposite her turned out to be a Charlie; “Hmm Charlie Cutting, isn’t that like the muggle device? A scozzer? Or was it shivers? Eh I don’t know.” Lilia had heard of this muggle device while on holiday in Greece, they had terrified her greatly at first but it turns out that they had no apparent power over the small girl. Lilia found them quite boring, where was the fun? The magic? She almost laughed out loud at her stupidity, there simply was no magic! Literally and figuratively. Lilia also wondered what sweets muggle had, did their pepper-imps not make smoke come out of the ears? How mundane.
Speaking of her collection of sweets and merchandise, Lilia picked up a chocolate frog before throwing one to the boy opposite her “want one?” She unwrapped it carefully, making sure to not let the frog get away, she chucked away the card, she had no use for moving people. It was then she realized that Charlie maybe didn’t want chocolate and that maybe he didn’t even know what a chocolate frog was. She also chucked a frog at her, whilst it wasn’t a hard throw, she had still actively walloped an object at the poor boy. Well, she thought she couldn’t exactly take back a chocolate frog. Go big or go home, right?
In all fairness, Lilia’s father had been the one to tell her she needed a motto to get through her Hogwarts years. Her mother was probably thinking something of the lines of; “stay out of trouble”, which just wasn’t happening. It wasn’t like Lilia actively seeked trouble; it was more that trouble had the uncanny skill of finding her, at least that’s what she told her parents. Whilst, the girl knew that she would have plenty of fun at Hogwarts, she was already beginning to miss her parents. Growing up as an only child, her parents were her friends away from school and although the family always had people around, the Eilertsen’s were each other rocks. Lilia didn’t know what she would do if something happened to them.
The young girl looked at the boy in front of her with a lopsided smile on her face, maybe she had come off as a bit intense, she wasn’t exactly sure but she hoped that Charlie didn’t mind too much. “So Charlie, what house are you hoping for?” The young girl spoke softly and popped her p’s, she found it way too much fun. Lilia wasn’t exactly sure what house she would belong in. Her parents had gone to Durmstrang where the housing system was different so that wasn’t much help to her. Maybe Slytherin? She was known to be cunning but she also had an unfaltering reckless and oddly brave streak. Time would only tell, she reminded herself quickly. Lying back in her seat, she eagerly waited for Charlie’s answer, maybe they could become fast friends!

Day One
Charlie's eyes narrowed, and his head cocked ever so slightly at Lilia's first question. The muggle device? Scozzer? Shivers? Neither of these were a device he'd ever heard of before. Shivering was something he often found himself doing from the winter cold, but what on earth was a scozzer supposed to be? She couldn't have possibly meant... "Do you mean scissors?" he asked. It did make sense since she asked after hearing his last name, and scissors were meant for cutting things, but how could the girl not know that? Was the idea of scissors that unusual in the magical world? What did they use to cut things then?
Before he had much time to say anything else, the girl tossed him a small package. Charlie looked down at it, reading the golden lettering of the five-sided box: Chocolate Frog. "Sure, thanks," he replied with a smile, the idea of a sweet treat became a welcome surprise, especially given what little he'd eaten before, and the idea of chocolate being molded into the shape of a frog certainly sounded fun. He was just about to open his chocolate frog when he looked back up at the girl who had already opened hers up, and the site shocked Charlie more than anything he had seen thus far. The chocolate was alive! It was moving, and trying to jump away! Had they simply dipped a real, living frog in chocolate and called it a treat? Was this was wizards ate? Live frogs?
Charlie slowly set the unopened box down on the seat next to him as Lilia asked one more question: "So Charlie, what house are you hoping for?" Charlie vaguely remembered the witch who had brought his letter telling him about the Hogwarts houses, but in truth, he had stopped paying too much attention at that point. The thoughts of running around an old castle, casting spells, finding himself on daring adventures had overtaken him. It didn't matter to him were he was living, but it must have mattered to the girl across from him. What had been then funny names the witch had used that day? Ravenpuff? Manticore?
"Oh... well of course any of them would be great, and really who's to say that any one is better than the other, right?" he began, answering the question the way he did with any in his old muggle classes: by not answering at all. "Of course it really is just an honor to be going to such a well respected school like this anyway. And with four great houses, wow. So many houses. They must be quite large houses to fit so many students in them. But why do we even need to be separating students to begin with? Isn't umm... unity really the best option?"

Day One

Lilia nodded to herself; scissors, that was what the weird cutting contraption was. It occurred to her greatly that Charlie was a half-blood or maybe even a muggleborn, not many purebloods knew what scissors were after all wands were so much easier for many things. Whilst Lilia liked a lot of muggle things, she still found this surrounding their culture, alien and confusing. What on earth was the function of a rubber duck for example? They didn’t even more and Lilia found that highly disappointing.
Charlie looked rather confused when Lilia’s chocolate frog began moving, did he honestly expect it to stay still? The frog was about to be eaten, of course they would want to escape in their final moments, wouldn’t anyone? Lilia was going to voice her thoughts but thought better of it, there was no point getting into useless arguments over something a minute as a chocolate frog.
"Oh... well of course any of them would be great, and really who's to say that any one is better than the other, right?" Lilia supposed she agreed in a half sense, she didn’t believe that any house was better than another one at the moment but she knew the moment she had been sorted her opinion would change. "Of course it really is just an honor to be going to such a well respected school like this anyway. And with four great houses, wow. So many houses. They must be quite large houses to fit so many students in them. But why do we even need to be separating students to begin with? Isn't umm... unity really the best option?" It was at this point that Lilia decided that Charlie was definitely a muggle born, Hogwarts was the only school in the British Isles, Lilia didn’t think it was that hard to get into.
Lilia’s parents had gone to the Durmstrang Institute of Magic considering both of them were Romanian. Whilst Durmstrang was in the northernmost part of Europe, it was the closest school for Romanians. Lilia had originally wanted to go to Durmstrang; it was part of her heritage after all. However, the family had moved to Oxford when Lilia was still young, her magical occurrence had also been in the United Kingdom meaning she was eligible for Hogwarts.
As for unity, Lilia wasn’t completely sure what he meant by that. Lilia enjoyed the idea of a house system, it gave the student a family inside of Hogwarts and made sleeping arrangements alongside other things easier. Lilia also loved traditions and houses reinforced them. “You’re a muggle born right?” It wasn’t said disdainfully, more as a question. “My parents went to Durmstrang so the housing system is different but I quite like Hogwarts' way of things, it creates traditions. Your house will be your second family, you know.”

"Isn't umm... unity the best option?"
It was an incredible stupid thing to say, but it was better than the alternative of admitting he had not paid attention. But Lilia was certainly smart enough to see through his not-answer answer.
"You're muggle born, right?" she had asked before explaining that her parents had both attended Durmstrang, whatever that was. Another school of magic perhaps? That must have made her a... what was the term... full blood witch? It probably meant she was powerful too.
Charlie began to wonder just how many magic schools there were around the world, something he hadn't considered at all since finding out her was a wizard.
"Yeah, I guess muggle born is what you'd call me," he answered plainly, his eyes looking back at the chocolate frog box beside him. "Honestly I wasn't really paying attention when I was first told about the houses. I was a bit busy thinking about magic wands and broomsticks," he laughed. "So about that frog... it is supposed to do that, right? I mean... is it supposed to just be chocolate? Or is it a real frog?"
The sound of a loud whistle could be heard through the window, and the train began to move, taking them slowly out of the station. Charlie's stomach grumbled lowly for a moment, but he still wasn't quite sure he was up to consuming a frog.

Day One
Lilia smiled at Charlie but the corners of her mouth downturned when she realized that he definately didn't know what Durmstrang was. Having Romanian parents who both went to Durmstrang, it was expected that Lilia did the same but instead she found herself at Hogwarts. She assumed that the majority of people at Hogwarts only had relatives that only went to Hogwarts. She also assumed that she was one of the few or perhaps the only Romanian in the entirety of Hogwarts, how cool would that be?
"Yeah, I guess muggle born is what you'd call me," The boy didn't meet Lilia's eye which she admittedly found rather strange, was he afraid of her? Surely she hadn't done anything to him. "Honestly I wasn't really paying attention when I was first told about the houses. I was a bit busy thinking about magic wands and broomsticks," Charlie laughed. "So about that frog... it is supposed to do that, right? I mean... is it supposed to just be chocolate? Or is it a real frog?" Lilia laughed with him and she found herself beginning to really like this boys company, hopefully they would be sorted into the same house and then maybe they could get to know each other even more.
"I don't think it's a real frog, merlin I hope it's not a real frog; maybe we should let it escape to the woods." On the word wood, Lilia's accent slipped out and it sounded more like vood. She recoiled in embarassment, she didn't like it when that happen. "Imagine if we were eating frogs!" On the note of that the train pulled away from the station. They were off! Now was where the fun started, where Lilia would finally be at Hogwarts and practice magic. Who knew what could happen?

Charlie let out a sigh of relief as Lilia told him she did not think it was a real frog. The last thing he wanted was the be eating amphibious animals. Allowing it to escape into the woods was definitely the best option, even though 'in the woods' was where his friend Chase's dog had eaten a toad once. It had been a disgusting sight, and Charlie had felt bad for the poor creature. Suppose it had been made of chocolate though, there would have been a dead frog and a very sick dog.
Charlie noticed the way Lilia had said 'wood', though he thought little of it, even though she had recoiled for some reason. She must have had some sort of accent or speech impediment that she was bothered by, but Charlie figured it best not to mention it.
"So uh... how long do you think this ride's going to take?" he asked. Charlie's eyes were on the window, watching the scenery around them. They were clearly picking up speed, as the trees outside were passing by faster and faster - or more accurately, they were passing the trees. "Because I've never been on a magical train before... and it's a pretty long train..." They were far at the end, with plenty of cars in front of them to explore. "If you want," he shruged.
