Coffee Beans and Salty Tears
Percival pushed the cart that carried his belongings towards the entrance of the platform. His gaze flicked to the straight form of his mother as she walked him to the platform. Her gaze was calm and held that regal expression that Percival never seemed to be able to copy. Percival's grandfather had once ranted to Percival the importance of looking the part of a Rainwood. His grandfather had also stated the displeasure of having Percival's father as his son-in-law. Though Percival tried to not pay much attention to his grandfather's accusations on his father's character. It wasn't like Percival cared for his father that much anyways. Even still, every boy wanted the approval of their father and it was something his father never seemed to give.
It was his first time off to Hogwarts, but the seeing off party was clearly lacking. With his two older brothers already graduated and his father 'unavailable'. Percival only had his mother to accompany him to the train station.
Everything had gone downhill when he had woken up this morning. Percival had rushed down to the dining room, not even bothering to change his clothes, in hopes of seeing his father before he left for work. Though when he got to the dining room, his father's morning dishes had already been washed and put away by the nanny. Percival had noticed his mother sitting in one of the chairs drinking her black coffee. The boy never understood why his mother enjoyed coffee. Especially when the coffee was black with nothing added. It looked as if the cup held a black void about to suck Percival up in it. Percival was brought out of his thoughts when he was told his father had no time today to see Percival off.
The bitter smell of the coffee beans mixed with the hurt in his heart. He knew he should have not expected much. Though the sting of betrayal and hurt rang sharply through Percival's core. His father always seemed to bail on the important parts of his life. He had even heard from the nanny that his father had missed his first words and even his first steps. Percival bit the inside of his cheek bringing himself back to the present. His mother's heels clicked sharply into place in front of the entrance to the platform.
"Alright, Percival we're here." his mother said turning to look down at him.
"I hope you enjoy your first year at Hogwarts. Make lots of friends." his mother said with a small smile. Even his mother's small smiles seemed like a blessing, and he knew she was trying to make up for the lack of his father,
Percival looked up at his mother's form, while glad that she was at least there he felt empty. He was never one to count his blessings. It was easy to focus on the negatives of one's life, and it was certainly easy to erase any promise of a good goodbye with his mother.
"Why can't Father be here?" he asked feeling the emotions he had kept bottled away start to rise up. Percival's emotions would not waver even when his mother's facial features dropped.
"Don't be selfish, Percival James Rainwood. Your Father is a busy man you know this." his mother chided her small smile was replaced by a disapproving frown.
"He's never around though!" he found his voice climbing higher in volume by the end of his sentence. Percival was surprised by his outburst he had gotten very close to yelling at his own mother.
"Percival enough! Stop making a scene. Your Father does what he can. Now go along." his mother snapped before waving at his dismissively. Percival did not care if he was making a scene or disgracing the family name. He just wanted his feelings to be heard, but he knew this would not be the case with his mother. She had always defended his father's actions, and she would never see things differently. Percival bit his tongue, keeping any unwanted words away from his mother's ears.
Percival turned his back to his mother and made his way towards the entrance. He ignored his mother's off-handed goodbye before he propelled himself into the entrance. The boy came out on the other side and stared at the wonderous site. His steps faltered slightly as he tried to take in the site of the platform. Percival shook his head before making his way closer to the train. All the while ignoring the stinging in his eyes that grew more and more apparent.
"I doubt you'll remember me with a smile."
