The First Table Crusade
House Slytherin's table being farthest from Gryffindor's, Buffy's choice was likely not a mistake. Table positions that probably kept the peace between the two rivals, perhaps also made it clear Buffy had, in fact, made a conscious decision. There she sat at the wrong table. Very wrong, a Gryffindor student sitting with the Slytherin. About as a wrong a table you could get, aside from sitting with the professors. Come to think of it, Lear hadn't been using his space. Maybe another time.
Leading up to Buffy's choice today though, was a minor incident that had occurred a few days prior. A Ravenclaw student had sat down at the Slytherin table. Entirely by accident. Some words had been exchanged, and the Ravenclaw student, Breana, had left in a hurry. Buffy had witnessed that last part, having come in late for lunch as Breana had stormed out. Evidently, Breana had been rather upset afterward. Buffy had thick skin and found it much ado over nothing. And further, none of her business. So she dismissed it at first, but it had got her thinking.
Thinking about it enough Buffy had come around to caring. Because, what if one sat down at the wrong table, but on purpose? One might annoy others and have a lot of fun. One might even sit down for a good reason, given the first incident. One could be there to settle the score. Or ask for an apology. Maybe just teach the prickly House why it pays to be polite. Buffy could even ask others to join her. Yes, it was plausible others might. She imagined there were other students interested in teaching Slytherin some manners. With a sort of peaceful protest, if you will.
Not being dumb, Buffy had gone over the rules meticulously when she got to Hogwarts. She liked breaking them certainly, but it paid off to be smart about it. After getting in trouble, pestering professors as to why her punishment was unfair was just extra credit. For that she needed to know the rules quite well. And Buffy didn't recall it was written anywhere that Houses had to sit with their own. That was more of a tradition. In Buffy's mind, that meant they were guidelines. Certainly not rules. In fact, Slytherin students might get in more trouble for retaliating. Yes, the more she thought about it, the more she liked the idea.
So Buffy put the word out. For the sake of the sisterhood, and protecting other young students from rude treatment in the future, a group of non-Slytherin should sit down at their table for a day. Beyond being on behalf of a Ravenclaw student, she kept details about the initial incident vague. The cause wasn't for Breana specifically, it was for Ravenclaw, and other students, generally. Whomever decided that was a worthy cause could join her at the far end of the Slytherin table. Hopefully the school's gossip circles would do most of the work for her. Buffy didn't think it'd be too hard. The events, and her take on it, fit the stereotypes of the various houses.
And even if there were no apologies from any Slytherin, it would at least send a message. Bad behaviour would not be tolerated, and Slytherin ought to treat students nicely. That was how Slytherin should garner power anyhow. Not fear, not intimidation, and not subterfuge.
Buffy's motives weren't pure though. She wasn't too concerned if any of the responsible were there, for instance. She was fine bothering any Slytherin. In that spirit, she had her red and yellow Gryffindor tie about her head like a bandana, marking her affiliation for all to see. She grabbed a piece of meat and put it on her plate. With care, she cut a piece off and tasted it.
"Mmmm. Gryffindor should bribe the elves for better food too." Buffy said out loud, having swallowed the morsel. Typical of Buffy, the statement had absolutely no evidence behind it. She wiped her mouth with a napkin. She didn't feel the need to explain her presence. Not right away. It was possible some Slytherin had guessed, or more likely, heard of her plan. That depended on how widely her call had spread. They might not even need a spy for that.
