@Dustin McNamara

1st September

Nawelle was sitting in the wagon, there was no one else and that made her happy. She was not going to be bothered at least. She had come by bike to the station, alone. Her father had explained to him how to cross the 9 3/4 barrier lane and her mother's last words were :"Come on Nawelle, hurry up, you're going to be late! Dad will send you an owl. See you at Christmas!"

No goodbye, no "good trip". Nothing. Of course the young girl didn't expect anything else from her mother, but it still made her a little sad...
Will her parents take care of her one day? Probably never ...

The Hogwarts Express still hadn't started, Nawelle watched the parents mixed with the students on the platform. Some were already dressed in Hogwarts uniforms, others were dressed like Muggles. The steam from the train causes a gray haze outside. The little brunette was already in uniform, her father insisted that she not have to have to change on the train.

She blew on the glass to make a little cloud of mist and drew a small heart on it. A sigh escaped her just as she heard a voice at the entrance to the compartment.

- Hey! Is this seat taken? Can I sit?

Nawelle turned to the person who had spoken. He was a little boy, obviously the same age as her. He had light brown hair and blue eyes. She didn't really want him to come and sit in her compartment, but she couldn't tell him to leave.

-Yes you can.

There was no friendliness in his voice, just a neutral intonation. She didn't want him to feel compelled to start a conversation with her...

I had Dustin's permission to "write his character".

"Well alright then, here we are!" Dustin's father shifted the rental muggle car into park outside King's Cross station and turned to look back at his son in the back, ice blue eyes meeting a matching, if younger pair. "Got everything you need?"

"Yeah, yeah, thanks dad." Dustin brusquely replied, the door flying open. The light rain the clouds promised had begun to fall. He quickly snatched his smaller-than-average trunk from the back seat and hefted it over his right shoulder with ease.

"I'll take that tone as one of excitement, sir," his dad called from the front seat, his reply a joking reproach. Dustin shut his door intentionally lightly and came around to the passenger seat window where his mother sat with the window now down. His face suitably mollified.

"Sorry."

"Oh hush, you know your father is teasing you. Come here." Dustin's mother reached out the window and gave him a tight hug. "Now remember: independence, kindness, humility!" His mother recited the phrase she had tattooed onto his brain from the moment he was old enough to understand what the words meant. She released him, but took his hand. Her green eyes now meeting his. "Be strong. Be yourself. Others will respect you more for it!" His mother always had advice on people.

"Owl us when you can. Don't worry, Trevor will turn up at the Owlery, he always knows when you need him. And we'll send along anything you forgot." And his father always had a plan.

His mother pulled him close for a kiss on the cheek. "We love you!" She sang, intentionally loudly. Dustin groaned, his face becoming flush as he turned away, his reaction apparently amusing his parents as they began to laugh.

Dustin left his laughing father and mother in their car at the entrance and swiftly passed through the muggle station. Dustin hadn't wanted to get lost when the real time to get to Hogwarts came, and his father always preached about being prepared so it was easy to convince him to show Dustin all around King's Cross the day before. Dustin confidently walked to the brick column and passed through the wall onto Platform 9 3/4 without a hitch.

Boarding the train was seamless, he was earlier than most, and took the time to change into his uniform robes in the toilet of the Hogwarts Express.

'Well, here we go,' he thought, taking a deep breath. He knew this was the beginning of something big. Packing up his trunk, Dustin moved into the corridor and started walking toward the back of the carriage, looking for an open compartment.

"It's important to get to know people. I should make some friends." He could hear his mother in his mind now, telling him that it was necessary to make connections. "Let's just see what happens."

Coming across an open compartment door, Dustin at first thought it was empty, until he spotted a girl sat down, looking out the window. She was pretty. Tall and thin, she had incredibly long black hair. He watched as she drew a heart in her breath on the window and let out a sigh.

"Here goes nothing," He thought.

"Hey! Is this seat taken? Can I sit?" Dustin spoke directly, as he always did. Not considering that she might want to be alone, but being sure to ask permission as she was here first.

She turned to look at him. Her green eyes had a look he couldn't place (apprehension? uncertainty?) but she didn't voice whatever she was feeling, she simply said "Yes you can."

"Great, thanks." Dustin stepped into the compartment and threw his trunk up, overhead with a soft thud. He spun and sat down opposite the girl, taking a space closer to the door so as to not be too close. She seemed undecided on him, and didn't seem like she would start anything, so he did what had always worked out and extended a hand to her to shake.

"I'm Dustin, Dustin McNamara. Do you know which house you want to get sorted into? Are you a muggle-born, or were your parent's wizards?" He tried to give off an easy smile, not holding anything back from meeting a new person.

Always forward.

The newcomer thanked Nawelle, put his trunk not very gently above him and settled in the compartment. After a few seconds, he held out his hand. The girl looked at his hand, as if wondering what to do with it, then shook it. The young boy introduced himself and started asking questions :

-I'm Dustin, Dustin McNamara. Do you know which house you want to get sorted into? Are you a muggle-born, or were your parent's wizards?

It was exactly what Nawelle didn't want. She had no desire to chat with Dustin and answer his questions. However, she didn't want to be rude before she even got to Hogwarts. So she decided to put her shyness and bad temper aside.

-I'm Nawelle. Nawelle Haidan

When she knew what house she wanted to be in, she didn't know. She didn't like the house system. It meant nothing to her. However, it was likely that she was distributed in Ravenclaw, all the wizards of her family had gone there before her.

-I don't know in which house I would like to be, I would probably be in Ravenclaw. But I don't care, my house will not define who I am. Never.

Of course, Nawelle didn't expect Dustin to be of the same opinion as her, but she wanted him to know that she didn't attach any importance to the different houses. She remembered that he had also asked if she came from a witch family and she decided to continue his effort until he answered that question there too.

-And to answer your last question, my parents are both wizards.

It was the first time that she had spoken to a "stranger" so much without stopping. But if she wanted to have at least one friend at Hogwarts, she would have to make an effort. At the moment, it didn't seem that difficult.
She resumed with a small embarrassed smile:

- And you ? Would you like to go to a particular house?

“I'm Nawelle. Nawelle Haidan”

”Nawelle. Nice name.” Dustin thought. She didn’t seem to be too bad so far. She’d shook his hand, and that was half the battle. He was worried that she might be hesitant to answer his questions, but he didn’t have to worry after all as she answered him.

”I don't know in which house I would like to be, I would probably be in Ravenclaw. But I don't care, my house will not define who I am. Never.”

”Ravenclaw? That’s where dad went.” Dustin mused to himself. ”Supposed to be for the clever ones. Hopefully she isn’t like dad’s type of crazy.” She was definitely more reserved than any of the Ravenclaws he’d met through family, though he did have to admit he barely knew her. She seemed adamant about not wanting to be defined by her house though. ”Maybe it would be best to not ask about that.” He thought.

”And to answer your last question, my parents are both wizards.”

”Oh, just like me.” Dustin was about to reply to keep the conversation going, but she looked like she had more to say and so he didn’t want to stop her. She seemed to have a small smile on her face. Definitely a good sign!

And you ? Would you like to go to a particular house?

”I’ll be honest, I don’t know too much about the houses. Mom and dad never did care much about the differences between them.” Dustin began, as always not caring about sharing personal information and instead speaking freely and simply. ”I’ll be fine no matter where I go.” Dustin nodded to himself. Nothing was going to stop him from exploring everything about magic. He wanted to see everything, try everything, and he couldn’t wait to start. Just the thought of it made him want to bounce off the walls in anticipation.

”I’m just ready to get going, and start at Hogwarts.” Dustin looked Nawelle in the eyes. ”Once I’m there I can do whatever I want and try new things without hurting anyone.” Dustin thought back briefly to the incident with the muggle boy. He was crying and scared and didn't know what was going on...

Dustin shook his head to clear out old, bad thoughts.

”But anyway! What are you most looking forward to? Why are you going to Hogwarts? What do you want to learn?” Dustin was feeling excited now, and was glad to be talking to new people and to finally be on his way.

Always forward.

A shadow passed over the little wizard's eyes when he said he could try new things "without hurting anyone". Something must have happened, but Nawelle knew very well that it was the kind of thing to avoid. Besides, he himself didn't expand on the subject and resumed :

-But anyway! What are you most looking forward to? Why are you going to Hogwarts? What do you want to learn?

When Dustin was talking about Hogwarts, he seemed to be so impatient to be there ... She wished she were as enthusiastic as he was. She was happy to go to this witchcraft school of course, she was eager to learn but was also very sad to have to leave home and lie to her best Muggle friend.

What did she expect from Hogwarts? It was a good question, she didn't really know. She wanted to learn, that was certain. And maybe she also expected some affection. She had never received one except from her friend Celestin who could not go to Hogwarts and perhaps also from her cousins but whom she rarely saw. She went to Hogwarts because she was a witch and she had no choice. If she could have, she would have stayed in London with Celestin.

-I don't really know what I expect at Hogwarts. I want to learn, I don't know what, everything. But I would have preferred to stay in London ... And you ? What are you most looking forward to at Hogwarts?

The train had finally started to move, it left the platform slowly. All the parents present waved a hand with a smile for some, a tear for others. Nawelle would have liked to see one of her parents on the wharf ... Nan, in reality she would have liked to see Celestin on the wharf, or better in the wagon with Dustin and her.

-That's it. We leave ...

Answer a little short, sorry

“I don't really know what I expect at Hogwarts. I want to learn, I don't know what, everything. But I would have preferred to stay in London ... And you ? What are you most looking forward to at Hogwarts?”

”She would have preferred to stay in London? How could anyone not want to go to Hogwarts?” Dustin thought to himself. ”She must not like being magic. Or is leaving someone behind.”

The train started to pull away and Dustin could see Nawelle looking out the window with a look he couldn’t place. Was it uncertainty? Sadness? “That's it. We leave ...” She said. Dustin remained silent for a moment, looking out the window himself. Unsure about whether to ask about why she didn’t want to go to Hogwarts. In any other situation he knew he would ask more, but he probably shouldn’t.

Instead, he simply answered her question. ”My mom and dad rarely use magic since we live around so many muggles, so I'm really looking forward to seeing it every day.” He smiled and nodded, looking back at her. The train was picking up speed and was taking Dustin along with it.

” So I’m looking forward to everything." "I want to learn to transfigure things. I want to learn to cast spells that can change the world.” Dustin was getting more enthusiastic with each thought. ”I want to fly. I even want to do potions! Anything that changes me or the world around me I want to learn and try!” Dustin really wasn’t holding back. He felt the excitement course through him. He knew he should try to control himself, but he just didn’t care. He wouldn’t hide his desire for more.

Dustin had, for too long, been denied what he considered a big part of himself. Magic was what he wanted, and now he was going to get it. In his excitement he just decided to ask his earlier question. ”But why would you prefer to stay in London? Do you have family or friends there?”

Always forward.

So him parents didn't use magic much ... Conversely, Nawelle's parents used it almost all the time. They must of course not be seen by Muggles and they have put in place all kinds of protections to avoid revealing the magic, so Nawelle was used to being always surrounded by it and she did not expect that in particular from Hogwarts.

Dustin looked really super excited and impatient to go to Hogwarts. Nawelle envied her, she wanted to be as enthusiastic as him. But she had always known that she would go to Hogwarts and yes she was in a hurry to start classes but did not have the feeling of going on an adventure.

Apparently Dustin had stopped at the fact that she wanted to stay in London because he asked :

-But why would you prefer to stay in London? Do you have family or friends there?

Nawelle didn't really know if she should answer the truth. It was often frowned upon that a witch befriended a Muggle. She was afraid that Dustin would make fun of her or something. But she didn't want to lie to him, she hated to lie so she decided to tell him the truth anyway.

-Uh ... Family yes but I don't care. There is my best friend. But he's a muggle so ... He doesn't know anything about magic and ... and he thinks I'm just in an ordinary boarding school.

After saying that, a wave of sadness passed through her eyes and she looked out the window again. The train had picked up speed now and they were crossing a magnificent landscape...

Again sorry for the delay

“-Uh ... Family yes but I don't care. There is my best friend. But he's a muggle so ... He doesn't know anything about magic and ... and he thinks I'm just in an ordinary boarding school.” Dustin could see the sadness in Nawelle’s eyes as she spoke.

”I’m sorry to hear that.” He joined her in looking out the window. The hills and lochs were getting to be more frequent as they travelled away from the city and entered into the highlands. ”There aren’t many wizards near where I live, so I used to go out and play rugby with the muggles near me.” Dustin offered. Honestly, if anyone understood leaving friends behind it was him.

”That ended though when I tackled my friend and almost opened a sinkhole in the ground.” Dustin hadn’t spoke about the incident since it happened. He thought about it every day, but hadn’t said a word. Now his tone was one of detachment. He didn’t want to think about this. It was anathema to his character to be depressed or introspective.

”They obliviated him and all my other friends. I haven’t been able to see them since.” Mike, Aoife, Alan, Paddy, James, Rebecca, and all the muggles he used to run around with he hadn’t seen in months. This conversation brought it to the front. Dustin gripped his robes tight. He was quiet for a moment, then shook his head and looked back at Nawelle, forcing a smile. He cleared his throat.

”They were safe though so that’s all that matters.” Dustin nodded, growing quiet. It was better this way. At Hogwarts he and everyone around him would be safe.

That’s all that mattered.

Always forward.

A bad experience with magic probably explained why he wanted to learn to master it. This incident seemed to weigh on him, Nawelle therefore decided not to comment on it. So he too left Muggle friends behind him, and from what the girl understood, he couldn't see them again after the incident. Nawelle imagined that such a thing could have happened with Celestin, but she couldn't. It was way too horrible.

The girl had never had magic problems, it was even quite the opposite. Her parents thought they may have given birth to a firecracker. They were convinced that she was not a witch until she received her letter.

Dustin remained silent for a moment, she respected him silence, but he continued :

-They were safe though so that’s all that matters.

Would it be better to be a little bit in danger but with the people we love or in security, but deprived of them? Here is what Nawelle thought, but she kept her thinking to herself, judging that it was not the best thing to say in this situation.

Now she didn't really know what to say, she felt sad for Dustin. Despite everything, she continued:

-Yes, they are safe, but above all you will learn to master the magic so that it does not happen again and you can find them and play with them again.

Nawelle smiled reassuringly for Dustin. She too had problems with Celestin. Finally rather with her parents, they didn't want friendship between her and him. For them, he was just a simple muggle...

"Yes, they are safe, but above all you will learn to master the magic so that it does not happen again and you can find them and play with them again."

Dustin looked down at his hands. He wasn't one for introspection, but he found this girl surprisingly easy to talk with. ”They've all actually forgotten me.” Dustin began. His voice was steady. It was the first time he'd said that out loud. ”It was one of the conditions for the ministry setting things right. I was removed from their memories.”

The ministry had had to step in when local police and fire departments got involved. The incident was public enough that it took several days of finding out which muggles had taken photos and seen the small, local news station's report. It wasn't anything severely threatening to magically secrecy, as the muggles simply assumed it was just a strange sinkhole, but it was severe and required a lot of work.

”Maybe one day I'll go out and make them my new friends again...” Dustin whispered. He let a slight smile grace his lips as he looked out the window. He didn't feel like himself. He was glad they would doubtlessly be to Hogwarts soon. The mountains were growing larger, and the sky darker in that constant overcast the Scottish Highlands featured.

Dustin sat in silence for a moment, suddenly not feeling pressure or rush to do anything for the time being, and just enjoying Nawelle's calming company.

Always forward.
