Name: Nico Figueroa
PC Name: Landon Matthews
School: Castelobruxo
Year: 4th Year
Link to your Character Page: Here!
Status: Muggleborn
Residence: Anaco, Venezuela
Nationality: Venezuelan
History: Born in Venezuela, Nico was the second of two children and has an older sister. His parents divorced when he was seven and he doesn't have contact with his dad anymore because his dad was always yelling and belittling the family. Nico has been raised by his single mother since he was seven years old and is very close to his mom and older sister.

Nico grew up with pretty much everything he needed, and some things that he wanted. His mom invested heavily in his musical talent, getting him a keyboard to practice piano on, which Nico taught himself. He struggled for a while to read music, but he soon taught himself to do that too. He found that he had a natural ability to learn music and he was happy to focus on learning as much as he could.

Growing up, Nico wasn't around magic. As far as he knows, his family is made up of Muggles and he is in the first generation to have magical ability. However, his older sister does have magic as well, so maybe there was some magic in the family history after all. Nico isn't sure of this, but he is happy to have magic. He is close to his older sister, though she graduated from Castelobruxo by his third year, as she had magic as well. He was bummed that she left him behind, but he was proud of her all the same.
First Magic: When Nico was nine years old, he was practicing piano and working on a particularly difficult portion of the music. His hands were flying on the keys as he read the sheet music. He stumbled over the notes a few times and started over, growing more and more frustrated as he struggled with the music.

Finally, he started to get the hang of what he was doing and playing the music as well as he could. He wasn't perfect, but he wasn't the type to give up. He got to the end of the page he was playing and, before he could think about it, the page turned to the next sheet of music and he was able to continue playing. He didn't really think anything of this, assuming it was just a breeze blowing through a window, but this was his first instance of magic.

Status: Halfblood
Residence: Ayangue, Ecuador
Nationality: Portuguese
History:
Reducio
With roots connecting to England and Ecuador, Eden Carla Lorenz-Alves was born on May 6th 2012 in Tavira, Portugal to proud first-time parents, Carlos and Beatriz Lorenz-Alves. An only child, Eden was the sole focus of her parent’s energy. Her beloved papá’s roots lead to Ecuador, where he spent most of his young life before meeting Beatriz.
When Eden was five, her abuelo was in a tragic accident which sent Carlos, Beatriz, and her to Ecuador to care for him until he died. Her family was quite shaken up by his death, and the Lorenz-Alves family nearly went back to Portugal when Eden suddenly had her first instance of magic when her parents were helping her get ready for her abuelo’s funeral.
Knowing Eden would have to attend school in South America, the family built a house across from her abuela’s and sent their things from Portugal. Eden was surrounded with a strong, loving family, even more so after moving. Her abuela insisted she attend at least three months of public school before Castelobruxo so she had a sense of both her parents’ school systems. Eden hated it, but withstood, attending four months of public school when she was eight and understood a decent amount of Spanish which she learned from her papá.
After settling in Ecuador with her family, Eden was surrounded by loving and devoted family members and friends. Her dad’s childhood best friend Juan and his wife Isa lived nearby the Lorenz-Alves and were an active part of Eden’s life, becoming adults she looked at as family. Her life in Ecuador primarily revolved around her family. Aunts and uncles lived within minutes of Eden, making them accessible to make snacks and tell stories at any hour of the day. Liam, her paternal uncle, took his time carefully helping Eden learn all about the fishing culture. Ana, her paternal aunt, and her husband spent hours cooking with Eden in their kitchen, making dishes like encocado or Bolón de verde.
On some lucky weekends, Eden got to look forward to traveling to the Ayangue beach with her family followed by a lunch of ceviche or arroz marinero. While it was no Tavira, she adored those days spent on the beach. Sometimes, her abuela would collect sea shells with her during those trips. She’d press them into Eden's hand and whisper, “Esta es la manera que tiene tu abuelo de agradecerte por venir aquí.” This is your grandpa’s way of thanking you for coming here.
She grew up sending letters to her Portuguese family. Her avó would insist Eden remained practicing and speaking Portuguese regularly in addition to Spanish, which led to them exchanging letters often. Her mãe kept a little pygmy owl named Beka around the house just so Eden could communicate with them whenever she needed to. Eden’s Portuguese family consisted of her mother’s two sisters, Emila and Mae who were also raised in Portugal with Beatriz, Emila’s son Matthew, and her grandparents.
During Eden’s brief stint in muggle schooling at eight, she grew close with many local children in the area, several of whom had fathers who worked with Eden’s dad. They’d play games together after school, Eden taught many of them a handful of words in Portuguese. Whenever she’s at home from Castelobruxo for a holiday, she takes the time to see many of her former classmates.
Starting schooling at Castelobruxo proved to be a struggle to Eden. She was not used to living that far from her family and not being able to see them or hear their voices for months on end. Eden struggled to pick up the Brazilian dialect of Portuguese having been raised with Portugal’s language formalities and accent. The word differences caught her unprepared multiple times. Fortunately, Eden made it through her first and second years without a scar.

The sun, like Eden, was barely awake. It was the day of her abuelo’s funeral and burial. She’d hardly slept last night, awakened by Abuela’s sobs late into the night. Her mãe had tugged her black dress over her head and combed through her hair. Papá was busy trying to straighten the ribbon she wore, when Eden noticed his red eyes, the way his shoulders shook, the tracks the tears had left on his face like a roadmap. Her heart broke.
Suddenly, Carlos dropped the ribbon in frustration, scowling at the ground, chucking the thin piece of string down in anger. Eden, wildly upset to see her papá that way, gasped, and the ribbon never touched the ground. It held in front of her brown eyes, dropping when Carlos swept her into a hug, shouting, “¡Mi hija es una bruja!” My daughter is a witch! over and over.
Her mãe rushed into the room, wiping a mixture of mourning tears and tears of celebration from her face. She wasted no time applauding Eden on having her first instance of magic at only five.

Name: Thales Amaro
PC Account Name: Esme Hestridge
Year: First
Link to your Character Page: Abracadabra
Status: Half-blood
Residence: São Paulo, Brazil
Nationality: Brazilian

History:
Reducio
Thales was born at precisely 03:09 AM on December 17th. He came into the world quietly — the kind of silence that, coming from a newborn, made hearts stop for a single beat with quiet worry. The moment that nurses, doctors, and both his parents looked at him with concern, however, Thales quickly got loud. After asserting his presence (and that he was, indeed, perfectly healthy) that fateful night, he has not stopped asserting himself since.

The Amaro family that Thales was born into was one new, but already established in the wizarding world. His father, Óscar Amaro, was a muggle-born wizard, coming from a perfectly average family living on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro — making enough money to get by, but nowhere near to afford anything close to luxury Óscar yearned for. Thales’ mother, Eva, originally de Medeiros, came from a pure-blood family that had long since lost any prestige their name used to carry. She lived in the more upper class, old neighborhoods of Saõ Paulo, her family using up the last of their savings to maintain their old home and ensure Eva, as the “heiress”, would get a proper education; even if that word had stopped meaning much to a family with little remaining capital, social or economic, to speak of.

Óscar and Eva's paths crossed after they both graduated from university with degrees in Law and Wizarding International Relations respectively. They both took to work in government, one on the muggle side, and one on the wizarding. They matched each other easily — the kind of drive that drove them into a friendly rivalry, at first, and later, a sincere and passionate romance. Eva continued working her way up, and soon became an official diplomat for the Ministério da Magia Brasileiro. She was quickly joined there by her newly-wed husband, who, with the new connections in the wizarding world his wife brought, pivoted and found a job there as a muggle-wizard liaison. Together, they were a force to be reckoned with, and after their marriage, they made Amaro into a name to watch, gaining recognition in the space of wizarding law and international relations.

Thanks to Eva’s job as a diplomat, Thales was born in Washington, DC, as were two of his three younger brothers. Growing up, the family often switched between their multiple residences — most commonly between Washington, New York City, as well as Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Though his parents’ jobs were demanding, they always highly valued family, and Thales never lacked for anything from either his mother and father. When Eva was abroad and unable to take the children with her, Óscar was sure to take care of both Thales and his siblings; and when urgent cases called Óscar away to either Rio or any matter of places across Brazil, Eva always made time and arrangements to be with her kids. When it so coincided that neither of them were able to stay with their family, Thales and his younger brothers were taken care of by their grandparents. The Amaro’s permanent residence is, thus, officially in São Paulo — a penthouse in the city centre, where Eva’s parents would easily be able to help babysit if the need ever arose. Still, moving around and traveling often during his early years made Thales very comfortable on the move, and he’s visited the majority of the world’s continents at least once.

Thales’ life prior to arriving at Hogwarts was quite happy. His biggest issue was having to attend a muggle school, but even there, he was able to quickly fit in, find friends, and enjoy whatever popularity elementary school can hold. He grew up in a far more comfortable position than both his parents, and, thanks to their endless care, assets, and fixing of whatever mistakes he’s come to make, he’s developed an acute belief that he’s better than most anyone he’s ever met. He knows, on a level more subconscious than anything, that consequences are not something that can touch him — and can therefore come off as spoiled or arrogant. Thales’ position as the oldest son has also given him more confidence than one could believe an eleven year old to have. This extends to his relationships with his younger brothers: though having some sort of protective instinct towards Simon, Davi, and Lucas, they are not immune from being seen as a little bit beneath his level.

When Thales’ invitation to Castelobruxo arrived, he was far from surprised. All he felt was excitement and a sense of deep rightness, somewhere in his chest. Now that he would be properly learning magic, he would be able to follow in his parents’ footsteps; determined to make his name one to watch out for.
First Magic:
Reducio
Thales’ first instance of magic came when he was six years old. His brother, Davi, was about one at the time — and just about everything he did caused spectacle within the family. None, however, was larger, of course, than Davi’s first steps. They came during a pleasant day in the balmy sun of São Paulo’s October. Eva’s mother, Vitória, had taken Thales, Simon, and Davi for the day, and they were spending it in the backyard of Eva’s old family home — freshly renovated with new-found Amaro funds.

Thales and Simon busied themself playing tag, whilst Davi remained sitting in the grass under his grandmother’s watchful eye — and it was right as Thales was celebrating his victory against Simon as Davi managed to pull himself up and take a few shaky steps, all on his own, before ultimately flopping back down into his grandma’s lap. Vitória was overjoyed, of course; Thales, however, did not find it particularly impressive. He could walk, too — not only that, he had just been winning at tag, a running based game. That was obviously far better than a few very weak steps, right?

Jealous of all the attention his baby brother was getting, Thales’ frustration quickly mounted into a tantrum. Little fists clenched at his sides, face scrunched up in anger and eyes filling with tears, he stomped his foot — and as he did, all the newly-installed window panes broke in their freshly renovated window frames. Of course, the loud crashes quickly led to both him, and Simon, and Davi, beginning to wail loudly, and it wasn’t until Vitória was able to calm all three of the young boys down that she realised she was witness to two great milestones that day.

PC Name: Ebony Vetra
Year: 3

Status: Halfblood
Residence: Paramaribo, Suriname
Nationality: Surinamese
History:
Reducio
Roy Tjin-A-Wing was born in rural Suriname; his parents had immigrated from the Canton province to Suriname amongst a wave of Chinese immigrants, and had given birth to their son while working on a plantation. The rural areas were all he knew of Suriname until he migrated to the city of Paramaribo in search of a life more fulfilling. And for a fleeting while, that was what he found. In urban Paramaribo, Roy met Saskia Ramlakhan, a native Surinamese, and thus commenced the typical love story. Though life in the urban areas was far from the neoliberalist dream that Roy had initially reached for, Saskia made for more than enough fulfillment. Soon after, head over heels for the girl, Roy proposed, and she, who yearned for him equally as much, accepted. And what a dream couple they made; their first son, Kiran, was born, and then another shortly after: Luuk. A third son, Etiënne, followed.

A perfect story, but the perfection was ephemeral. Four years after Etiënne blessed the household, the uncorrupted dream shattered. Luuk Tjin-A-Wing was eight years old when screams of rage emanated from the living room of their run-down house. What his mother, Saskia, told her husband then to evoke such a reaction was — prior to that day — unbeknownst to Luuk as well: she was a witch. Luuk had spent the early days of his childhood in local Muggle school, and was completely ignorant to any magic around him that existed. His father was the same — it seemed his wife's deception, or charm, had worked for too long. Perhaps she had hoped he loved her enough to accept the truth, or she had intentionally deceived him to undermine his trust. Whether her intention was genuine or not, Roy's reaction to his wife's long-withheld pronouncement was one of outrage.

Thus commenced the fragmented story.

Nothing was the same after that fateful day. The eight year old boy watched that night as his mother apparated away from the house — seemingly disappeared into thin air, from his perception. He never saw her again. To this day, he remains unsure of the fate of his mother. Though, that wasn't to say that he didn't love her. Luuk had loved his mother very much, and to his understanding, she had loved him, too. Saskia had always been the kinder one out of the couple, a free-spirited artist who naturally attracted children to her side with that smile that radiated so much warmth. The young boy failed to comprehend why his sweet, sweet mother had left them, and to this day, he still holds a certain degree of affinity for the woman.

His father, Roy, however, had always been short-tempered, and his impulsivities only deteriotated after that day. Left loverless and trapped in a factory job that he detested, he quit his job to loiter within the house, resorting to quick jobs that skim the edges of the law. At home, he did little more than provide the basic sustenance for his sons, and even then, it was lackluster, for he lacked the financial and emotional capacity to care. Luuk would frequently find his father sprawled on the torn couch with a cheap bottle of rum clasped in his hands, liquid staining the man's shirt.

It was after Luuk's first instance of magic — after neighbours reported a loud crash — that the Surinamese Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing intervened to place Luuk and his brothers in foster homes. Different foster homes. And abruptly, just like his mother, Kiran and Etiënne vanished from his life. His time at the foster home was not unpleasant, a kind young couple having taken him in, but even now, he holds resentment towards officials for the separation.

Time came for Castelobruxo; the boy was of course astonished to find that there was an educational institution for people like him — for people like his mother. The school, the students, the magic, the lush rainforest — it was all a welcome escape, though he struggled with the language. Fluent in Cantonese, Surinamese Dutch, and Sranan Tongo, his Portuguese was broken at best, sentences formed in shattered fragments. Despite this barrier, the boy remained determined to learn magic to the best of his abilities. Perhaps with it, he could one day locate his mother and brothers.

First Magic:
Reducio
It was shortly after the day it had happened. His father was in a particularly irritable mood. He was usually rendered lethargic by the drink in his hand, but this particular day, he was placed in a standing position, eyes burning with a sort of passion only anger gave rise to. His tempestuous speech was directed toward Luuk, spoken in slurred Cantonese, "點解你阿媽冇帶埋你哋三個衰仔走?" (why didn't your mother bring the three of you nasty children with her?) The man had stopped speaking the Surinamese languages.

If it were any other day, Luuk would have turned tail to run. On this day, however, what his father said provoked a rare brewing rage within him. The bottle held in his father's hand shattered abruptly. Roy had ruled it an accident, but deep down, the man knew — despite being intoxicated — that his son was one of them.

PC Name: Cecilia Merrick

Status: Half-blood
Residence: Assaí, Paraná, Brazil.
Nationality: Japanese.

History: Naiane’s parents met while exploring a magical forest in Russia. Although her mother resided in Brazil at the time, she moved to Okinawa, Japan to be with Naiane’s father after learning that she was with child. Naiane spent the first six years of her life there, making pleasant childhood memories. However, her mother struggled to integrate into the community. Although she tried for her daughter’s sake, Naiane saw signs of her homesickness and loneliness, despite not fully understanding it.

The final straw was when her mother overheard cruel remarks regarding Naiane’s identity from some of the children in their area. Her mother was horrified. After this incident, tension grew between her parents, culminating in a heated argument over what was best for Naiane’s upbringing. In the end, her mother requested a divorce from her father. Although he protested at first, he ultimately relented after acknowledging that he was not the best option to raise her. This incident left a young Naiane deeply upset. Her entire world came crumbling down in an instant and she was pulled away from the place she once called home.

Naiane and her mother moved to Assaí, Paraná in Brazil. There, her mother dedicated herself to activism by writing various wizarding articles on the protection of magical creatures and founding a non-profit organisation dedicated to their conservation. Shortly after, her mother remarried a muggleborn and Naiane gained two siblings; a step-brother and a half-sister. Although their presence relieved her of loneliness, it marked the moment when she began shouldering great responsibility. She would often visit her maternal grandparents who were now retired hunters who ran a farm. They began teaching her the basics of archery alongside their family values; a melange of Brazilian and Japanese culture. The rest of her childhood was filled with mostly happy moments, aside from the occasional sibling squabble. Paraná soon became a second home to her. However, she would always miss her father and Okinawa dearly.

Her mother is a pureblood whose lineage traces back to creature hunters on both sides. Eager to learn more about other magical communities and their connection to nature, her mother began exploring magical forests around the world. One day, she was wounded during an exploration. Whilst on the verge of collapse, a benevolent creature emerged from the woods and soothed her with its presence until help arrived. Not long after, her mother learnt that the creature was slain by poachers, leaving her devastated. After that day, she began contemplating her path and swore to dedicate herself to the protection and conservation of magical creatures and plants. Her father is a half-blood, one of the few in his family line as he was born from an affair with a squib. Over the years, he worked some odd jobs around Okinawa before quitting to fulfil his dream of exploring the rest of the wizarding world. He retired from this after his divorce and now runs a modest magical antiques shop.

First Instance of Magic: Nine-year-old Naiane accompanied her family on a scenic hike. They stopped near a waterfall where they planned to swim. For a moment, her mother and step-parent were preoccupied with the youngest child who had fallen over. Naiane was briefly tasked with ‘keeping an eye’ on her step-brother, but they were not in any immediate danger. Soon, a heated argument began. As they neared the edge of the water, Naiane angrily thrusted a float into him. Her strength was greatly miscalculated and her step-brother was shoved into the water. Upon seeing him kick around and struggle to stay afloat, Naiane instinctively jumped in and swam after him. She was not skilled enough to save them both, but she was able to push the float to her step-sibling, who managed to grab on before Naiane plunged under water. Noticing the commotion, Naiane’s step-parent dove in after them. It almost seemed too late for her by the time she was reached, but by some miracle she was still conscious. Although both children were safe after this, her step-brother often glimpsed at her with fear in his eyes after that day.

Special Race/Ability: Seer
Seer Application:
Reducio
The seer talent can be traced far back in both the maternal and paternal lineage of Naiane. On her father’s side, the Tomari clan is a pureblood lineage that specialises in divination. Their services are mainly provided to support the growth and wellbeing of their community, but they also attract foreign clientele. They have produced many shamans over several generations, with some ancestors being seers that were named priestesses. Some held the belief that seer visions were responses to their prayers and offerings. Their religious practice lost great influence after the annexation of the Ryukyu Kingdom, dissolving the priestess hierarchy they once followed. Still, shamans within the family continued practicing divination among the wizarding community, which is why they still exist today. Unfortunately, the family business is slowly dying due to an increase in competitors, recent descendants losing interest in the practice and the restrictions of strict code of conduct. At this point in time, Naiane’s paternal grandmother and aunt are the last living seers within the Tomari clan. Her grandmother seeks to only use divination for selectively virtuous purposes, but finds herself undermined by some of the more self-serving clan members. The Tomari family oath currently prevents them from interfering with large-scale events, but some seek to subvert this for profit as times grow more dire.

Naiane’s maternal lineage mainly boasts pureblooded creature hunters. They did so to protect their communities and on the Japanese side it was also ritualistic within the community. Some ancestors were seers and while it made them excellent hunters, it was not necessarily desired. This talent was believed to be a gift bestowed upon them by nature and one that was then tainted by the misdeeds of a particular seer in their bloodline. The talent was thought to be lost after this, but began to resurface every few generations. On the occasions where a seer was produced, they were often monitored very closely so that history would never repeat itself. More often than not, being a seer was thought to be an indicator of a bad seed within this bloodline.

Naiane’s parents were aware of the possibility that she could be a seer, but there was no expectation placed upon her. It was presumed that Naiane’s maternal grandmother would have likely foretold this. The first occurrence was before Naiane turned six. She had recurring dreams of her parents screaming at each other and sobbing in separate rooms during the aftermath. She would often cry about having a nightmare when this happened, but never elaborated on any details out of fear of speaking into existence; a superstition she inherited from her grandmother. Although she never overheard the argument that led to their divorce, saw each parent emerge from their rooms with tearstained cheeks and pain in their eyes that was reminiscent of her dreams. Naiane also experienced small flashes of intuition throughout her childhood such as occasionally running to open the door for people seconds before they knocked and displaying concern that an animal was injured before any diagnosis was given. The former was dismissed as excitement and the latter was thought to be her keeping a close eye on the animal. As of now, Naiane does not know that she is a seer.
