To add what May has explained, a character with a non-human race or with a special talent such as a parseltongue could only apply a personally chosen ability once every two years, on their even-numbered year. For year 1, 3, 5, & 7 these characters receive an assigned ability each.

Also, these characters would always have -5 stats points compared to their peers on the same year. A first year human has 35 points for example, but a first year Dhampir can only have 30.

So in short: if you prefer to have abilities automatically given to you once every two years, go for a special ability or race. If you like to personalise your characters' abilities and choose them (instead of being automatically chosen by the site rules), go for a normal human.

If I'd like my iNPC Ash to have the ability I wasn't able to apply for before the Durmstrang iNPC applications closed, is it still possible to apply for my iNPC's ability?

Hi May, I'm not a staff here but from my IRL friend's experience (they also RP here), it is not possible. Players have to wait until the application period is re-opened, so not now. Hope this helps.

When does a year end??

For the newpaper team, you have to wait for applications to open, although theres currently applications open for graphics iirc. As for when the year ends, it ends in july, if you are in the index by then you will become a second year, hope that helps! @Avni Aggarwal
