Any previous interactions with house elves: Not directly, but he's helped his parents knit hats for elves that they the adults distribute to mistreated house elves in the area. They've determined that since this is an activity that brings a certain amount of risk in the form of angry masters suddenly deprived of servants, that it's probably for the best if the kids stayed at home for that part of the process.
