Botan’s father
Botan
Botan is an interesting boy. As a young child he was always pressured by his parents. They wanted him to be better than his charming cousin Akihiko. Akihiko always won over others. He was smarter, and in some situations, just better than Botan. What ever Botan did to one up Aki, just never worked. Until his father sat him down.
“Botan. You need to do better. Why is Akihiko always beating you at… everything?”
“I-” Botan stammered. What he meant to sat was something along the lines of I’m doing my best, but Akihiko is just better. Or maybe I’ll do better. But no. Botan just sat there, stuttering at his father.
“Its because you don’t study. Don’t practice. Don’t put in any effort.” His father continued. “Come on son, do better.” his father added.
At this moment, Botan’s heart was completely crushed. Shattered into a million pieces like a piece of hard candy that has been stomped on. But two of his fathers words were stuck in his head. Do better. Do better. Botan was trying. He was practicing. But it just wasn’t enough for his demanding family. From that day on, Botan knew he needed to find another way, even if it wasn’t right. His new way was cheating. Finding loopholes. Sneaking around.
And for some horrible reason it actually sort of worked for him. About 25% of the time Botan would get away with it. And it pleased his dark and cold heart. Very few had peeled back the layers and reached the warm core that disagreed with his choices. If they saw him now, they would ask him why he was doing it. But Botan was getting away with it, so he continued.
One day when Botan and Akihiko were home, the decided to play a round of a basic version of quidditch, with one hoop, and only the quaffle. They agreed on first to 100 would win, and the loser would have to give the winner a stack of chocolate frogs. Their grandparents were sitting outside, supervising the boys and making sure no one got hurt, and that it was an honest game.
About halfway through, Botan was losing pretty hard to Akihiko, and Botan was determined to win. Not for the chocolate frogs, but mainly for the bragging rights. He just wanted to win one thing against Aki. During a round of play, Botan grabbed the quaffle and bumped Aki into their makeshift quidditch hoop. Aki yelped in pain and flew over to his grandmother. When his grandparents were inspecting Akihiko, Botan snuck over to the score board and took a huge risk but taking 20 points off of Aki’s scoreboard. It was a huge risk on his part, but his mother had told him, high risk, high reward.
For something that the rest of the world frowned apon, Botan did not find it that terrible. Actually it was pretty useful. It brought victory, and Botan liked to win.

[reducio]When Botan was five years old, he and his cousin Akihiko were outside, playing in the mud and his grandparents were watching him. Akihiko was trying to make the perfect pie, and Botan had challenged him to do so. Botan used mud and worms, lining the bottom with mud, adding a layer of worms, which he had found. Then he added a big scoop of mud on top, and called it finished. A few minutes later, Akihiko finished making his pie, which was an amazing pie that almost looked like a professional chef had made it. If pie’s were made of mud.
Botan asked his grandparents which one they liked, and they looked at eachother and told him that “they are both beautiful!” Botan was hesitant, but when Akihiko announced that he liked Bo’s better, a big grin spread across Botan’s face. Botan had beaten Akihiko! Just then, his grandparents turned and announced that he had won. Victory! Botan was amazed. He had won!
Bo watched his cousin wink at his grandparents. That was it.
“Hey!” He shouted. “That’s not fair!” He complained. “You said you liked both of ours! I’m not scared!” He yelled. “I don’t care if you like Akihiko’s better, but at least say it!”
Botan continued to be brave throughout the time he was home. Working hard to complete pranks that other children would have backed out on, like sneaking into the kitchen and making breakfast for Akihiko, but injecting the fruit with food coloring.
When the two boys would go out, Akihiko would always be the one everyone talked to. Botan made a group of friends, but they were all muggle. The group often found Akihiko tagging along, as he had nothing else to do. The group always pranked neighboring kids, and made mischief.
One day when Botan was seven years old, he had a new idea for a prank. All he had to do was get one of his friends to buy a flower pot that matched his neighbors and plant different seeds in them. The pot was bought, and seeds were as well. They grew the seeds for a while, and when it was time to do the swap, Botan volunteered. No one else wanted to get caught. He wasn’t even afraid. Botan brought the seeds and the pot, and went up to the house and swapped the two pots. He even had the guts to sprinkle some of their leftover seeds on the flowerbed, and slip away unseen.
Botan was their fearless leader after all. It was his job.

Ever since he enrolled in day school at Mahoutokoro, Akira Shimizu had always wanted to become a duelist. It wasn't simply a future written for him by his pure-blooded parents -- as a child, he had been fascinated by the various spells he could one day master, and the deftness by which he was able to wield his magic compared to similarly aged peers.
Dueling fit his strengths perfectly. It leaned heavily on the caster's individual abilities: concentration, memorization, rehearsal, reflexes, instinct, and strategy. As a child who preferred to lean on his own ability and hard work, he quickly found that he was not accustomed to the level of teamwork required by quidditch, nor was he a fan of heights and flying, which both quidditch and broom racing required. While teamwork was still required of duelists when competing in pairs, he found it easier to adapt to a single other individual than the numerous uncontrollable factors brought on by more team players on the race course or pitch.
He dove in headfirst into his chosen sport. As soon as he was able to wield a wand, spell practice commenced in full force in his dual worlds: at home with tutors and in school with professors and classmates. He always attended the matches of his seniors to admire their abilities and strategies; those were the sportsmen that he one day longed to be and to exceed. They were the upperclassmen from whom he hoped to gain trust and respect. Once he discovered, at a young age, that spells could not only affect a single target but could spread to multiple targets, he knew it was a skill that he had to master himself to become a competitive duelist.
Once he joined the dueling team at Mahoutokoro, he had been many times a victim to spell spread when paired against upperclassmen. Each loss or hit only made him more adamant about learning the ability himself. It took months upon months of training; first learning a wide array of his first repertoire of spells, then perfecting his casting ability to become a perfectionist in his casts, and finally he sought to make those spells spread. Over the summer before becoming a third-year, he was finally able to make it happen after ruthless practice with his tutor and team extracurriculars. However, he knew that he had to continue working just as hard to become even stronger.

1. Perfectionist I
2. Perfectionist II
When you cast a spell, you take your time doing so. You enunciate your words with care and you do not recklessly swish your wand about. Your spells don't backfire, they don't fail. You're too much of a Perfectionist to let that happen.
[reducio]Akira strives for excellence. From a young age, he was taught that every pursuit and action in life must be made with proper care. It was not only how you executed, but also how you conducted yourself in front of your peers and superiors, and how much you sought to hone your craft. It was upon his work that Akira built his pride, and he had always taken his education seriously. His perfectionist qualities are also reflected in his spellcasting, as he would carefully practice the wand movements and recite the incantations separately when learning a spell before casting, and rigorously commit both to memory with repeated practice every night until it became second nature to him when a spell was needed.
The way Akira saw it, his job as a child was to be a student, and he was to build his craft in his studies. From a young age, in addition to a child's regular schooling lessons, he would have tutors in calligraphy and music. Both practices were heavily centered around technique and patience; calligraphy was an art that taught the balancing of the mind, the art of expression, and familiarity with popular literary works. To hone his craft, Akira would read literature of the ancients beyond what was expected of his age. He meditated often and practiced his brush strokes and ink-grinding to achieve perfect consistency. To enhance his flute practice, he would study theory and listen to the recordings of masters to study their variations.
His studies in calligraphy and music were just the tip of the iceberg. Once he enrolled in Mahoutokoro day school at the age of seven, he already made it his personal goal to one day don the golden robes and to be one of the two class representatives. He was able to become one of the few top performers within his year at a school with rigorous academics and studious peers. Throughout the years, Akira became an adept learner, developing ways to study efficiently and review his lessons with care. Before each class, he would preview the relevant textbook chapters and the professors' relevant notes. During class, he would listen intently and ask questions as need be. After class, he reviewed the material within the same day and often began his homework as soon as possible. At the end of his week, he would review his notes for the week once more.
Patience and discipline were key. Whenever he had setbacks or mistakes on a test, he would often grind his teeth in frustration and sometimes beat himself up a little harder than necessary, but his resolve would strengthen as he tells himself that there's no point crying over spilt ink. Mistakes were learning opportunities, after all. Discipline kept his resolve sharp and a routine became natural once he followed it. After all, those who strongly desired to rise up would find a way to build a ladder.[/reducio][reducio]"Mind over matter. Now, Akira-kun, what does that mean?" his tutor asked a ten year old Akira, shivering in only a hakama in late fall, dripping wet from a bucket of water that had been poured over his head. A chilly breeze blew through the courtyard of the Shimizu estate, and the slim boy couldn't help but shiver.
"F-focus and intent matter most, Ikeda-sensei," the boy stuttered, clinging to his wand with pale hands. "N-no matter what your physical circumstances are," he continued, looking at the targets placed in the distance. His sensei nodded. "Yes, use your mental fortitude to maintain concentration and strength of will despite any bodily discomfort or distractions. However, that is only half the equation. You're forgetting something else, Akira-kun," the older man prompted his pupil to think harder, despite the child's chattering teeth.
The small boy thought for a second. "D-don't let emotional distractions get in your way while casting magic, either?" he asked, finding it quite hard to use his mind over the bone-chilling matter at this very moment. "Precisely," Ikeda-sensei responded. "Clear your mind. Your opponents may taunt you, and test your will to strive for perfection, but push away those voices and concentrate on what you need to achieve at that moment. Think about what you need to do: What is the incantation you need to utter? What is the wand movement you need to perform? What is it that you need the spell to do for you? Now, give it a try."
Akira raised his wand and uttered the incantation, drawing the wand movement in the air ahead of him. Sparks ignited but a small explosion rocked him, causing him to stumble backwards. "Not so hasty!" his sensei cautioned him. "Take your time. Remember what we've practiced, and concentrate on that." The boy was upset by his failure, but was determined to try again until he succeeded. He took a deep breath, and concentrated his will, taking his time to go over the correct incantation and careful wand movement before casting again. This time, the right color of sparks shot forth from his wand, hitting its intended target. He smiled at his success, looking towards his sensei.
"Good job," Ikeda-sensei responded calmly. "Now, how about a fresh bucket of water and we try again?" A bucket levitated above Akira's head before splashing some more water upon the already-drenched boy, but did little to discourage him from repeated practice until he was able to achieve perfection in his spells under the harshest circumstances. And so, his spellcasting practice continued. To this day, Akira would practice his spells many times over until the movements and incantations became second nature -- actions that could deem him a perfectionist in the eyes of many.[/reducio]3. Narumi could only grit his teeth as he continued his pull-ups. Despite the pain and the slothful take of drowsiness overwhelming him and the voices of sleep attempting to overcome him, he continued to pull himself one after another. A jack of all trades was one of the worst ways to describe Narumi. Despite his intellect, despite the pure blood that ran through his veins, he just had something against the ways of magic. It didn't have satisfaction, it didn't have the accomplishing effort that he craved and forced upon himself.
25...26...27...28... The numbers rang through the boys ears, as he continued to pull himself up each and every time by himself as always. His will and drive to become strong perhaps have a correlation to having a lineage of warriors in his family, ancestral traits that survived in artifacts and decor that his mother kept around the house only inspiring and making the boy wonder what hardships his ancestors had to endure. Other possibilities that rang could be from his own mother, a fierce and intimidating woman despite her feminine physique. Even she possessed physical strength that grown men themselves would fear, and inspiration for Narumi. Unlike his mother though, Narumi did enjoy the lazy and free nature of life. When he wasn't working in the hot summer sun in his mother's garden, or working himself out or study for a few seconds, he'd of course be sleeping.
40...41...42...43... The boy continued his pulls ups, as they began to grow slower and a bit harder to pull off. No matter how much the boy slacked in everything, he never would when it came to training his body. Strength, freedom, courage, loyalty. 4 aspects that Narumi held high, as if the spirit of a warrior lived and breathed deep inside him. No matter what the challenge, no matter how hard it was, he'd increase his strength, and of course his endurance. To take every spell, bludger, and problem head on. Never swaying or backing down, his fist would be the first answer before his wand.
44...45...46...47 his breathing was almost like an unbreakable tempo, calm and steady, prepared for whatever the world had to throw at him. His strength was all he had to stop the mockery, to protect his friends, to no longer be looked down upon by the world. Even if he screwed up during hexiwizard, he would show everyone that his strength could never be matched like the giants he met long ago. He spoke like a giant, fought like a demon, and had the abnormal strength of an Oni.
48...49...50 He was obnoxiously strong because it was all he focused on. A jack of all trades was a master of none, and Narumi was a master of only one. He would never let his strength falter. Despite his young age he had the willpower to protect, fight, and prove his worth in his own way.

Evasive Maneuvers
[reducio]From an early age, Hiro had always been quite agile on his feet and possessed instincts that allowed him to evade things that were going to physically hurt him. Even though he might have been fearless around most people, he still had a sense of danger and possessed survival instincts. If it was just something like a flick on the forehead or a nudge, he'd allow it to happen. But if it seemed as if it would leave some lasting damage, or worse, Hiro's body would instinctively avoid, evade or dodge it. This was not intentional on his part, it was just something he considered to be a natural instinct of his. It also came in handy when he bothered people, trying to get them to become his friends. They might lash out or 'attack' him. Obviously, he'd try and avoid them. Most of the time he was successful due to his great reflexes.
Hiro's interest in flying had taken form back then too. He'd ended up finding out that he was actually pretty good at it when one of his friends had let him take their broom for a spin. Maybe because of these two things (his reflexes and being good at flying), he'd been drawn to quidditch in the first place. Sure, he'd never played for a professional league before, but that was to be expected as he'd been a child at the time. A young one at that, as it had been before he was considered to be a first year at Mahoutokoro. But the moment he'd stepped foot onto the quidditch pitch and risen up into the air, he'd known this was his destiny. During the tryout he'd been able to evade his opponents almost every time they came at him. Somehow, he seemed to always manage to dodge at just the right moment before something or someone came close to hitting him. Many marveled at this skill or luck of his, as it happened more often for him than it did for everyone else. He even managed to evade 9/10 of the practice bludgers that were hit towards him by his opponents. Apparently, it was something that was rarely able to be done by quidditch players when they first started out. But Hiro seemed to have no trouble doing so, which impressed the ones in charge.
After finding out that his evasion skills were actually better than most people, nothing really changed for him. Many might have tried to take advantage of this skill and use it for ulterior purposes. But Hiro continued to go about his daily life, trying to make friends everywhere he went and only used his evasion skills for simple purposes. Such as avoiding any 'attacks' sent his way and applying the skill in quidditch, whenever he could find enough people to play it with him. One thing was for sure though, Hiro was glad he had such skills because they definitely came in handy in both quidditch and going after people who seemed as if they didn't want to be friends or talk to anyone. But Hiro knew better. Most of the time he was able to convince people to become friends with him. It was just that sometimes it took longer for some people than with others. He'd never really lost any of his 'targets' before and never intended on doing so. If he had to increase his evasion skills to continue his success rate, that was what he would do.

ReducioPractice makes perfect, that's what always had been drilled into Christopher's head as a child. The more time you spent refining your craft, the more likely you were to get a positive result. Well, that was easy enough for them to say, but the actual practice part of practice makes perfect was damn tedious and Christopher was quickly reaching the end of his tether. In his spare time outside of his already busy schedule of studying for his seemingly never-ending classes or preparing for the next task in the Hexiwizard Tournament, Christopher had been reading up on dueling tricks and strategies.
One thing that was of particular interest to him was that some wizards seemed to have the ability to attack multiple targets at once with whatever spell they cast. This caught Christopher's fascination because it struck him as being very useful. Inside of dueling and outside it as well, Christopher knew that if he could occupy multiple enemies in a fight, it could tip the scales in his favor, or even the odds if he was in a handicap match. And so he had started to read everything he could about it. There was sadly very little he could find in books about it. It seemed like it wasn't so much something that was taught but was instead either an innate ability or self-taught through training. And so that is what he had decided to do.
He really had no idea where to start so he tried to run through the problem in his head. What were the logistics? How could he change his own casting to reach his goal? He didn't want to practice on people for two reasons: First, he didn't want people to see him struggling with this new concept, and second, he knew if he wound up hurting people while practicing he'd get in trouble. He honestly didn't so much mind if someone got a nick or bruise on them, but he didn't want the hassle.
To start, he decided he would rip up some parchment and put the pieces on a flat stone surface. They were about a foot apart from each other to start with. His initial goal was to use incendio to set two scraps of paper on fire once, independently of one another. He quickly disregarded his first thought of changing the pronunciation of the spell's incantation slightly after remembering some of the warnings he'd received about pronouncing the incantations clearly so as to avoid unintended consequences. He then settled on the idea of it being something in the wand movement. His movement wasn't so much different as it was expanded slightly with a different aim. He would still aim at his primary target but be a little bit between that and the secondary target. He found that he was a bit more likely to miss altogether when he attempted this, but after a few days of practice, he was able to reliably set two pieces of parchment on fire with one cast. He then started to practice on moving (but non-living) targets whenever he could. It took a few weeks but he steadily became more proficient at it.APPROVED - No trunk coding was provided soooo I just did my best :p

ReducioAfter a good deal of practice on his own and playing non-official games of quidditch and airball, Ginyami's evasion has gone up considerably. He has been through a lot over the past year that has given him reason for needing to increase his evasion including facing off against an unknown enemy wizard over winter break and finding himself under attack at the spring ball. In addition to encountering these dangers, Ginyami has wanted to get better at evading in order to increase his chances to get picked to be on his school's quidditch team come tryouts. He has worked a lot not only on his stamina and accuracy as a keeper, but also his evasion because it's important for any player on a quidditch team to be able to avoid bludgers during the game.
In order to practice outside of unofficial games, Ginyami has been releasing bludgers and arming himself with a beater bat on the quidditch pitch, but only using the bat when absolutely necessary. Otherwise, he simply spends his time avoiding the bludgers as best he can which is no easy feat when he's the only target both bludgers have on the entire quidditch pitch. This has often left him black and blue at the end of his solo practices, but it has also taught him a number of evasive maneuvers in order to keep from getting hit whenever he can.
The Mahoutokoro student also isn't a fan of getting into fights or being the victim of magical spells, so he has learned to evade both magical and physical attacks even more than before because of his tendency to make people angry and want to lash out at him when he shows his true colors. Thus, dodging has become nearly second nature to him both in and out of games, whether he's playing around or not.
Ginyami anticipates facing a lot more danger in the coming years due to staying by the side of the Durmstrang student, Valentin Schnell, who seems to be a magnet for danger and is known as a daredevil, as well as the fact that Ginyami is a part of the Mahoutokoro Hexwizard Team which is bound to face a lot more hardships and struggles in the tasks to come. For these reasons especially, the Japanese student has done his best to learn to keep out of danger's way in order to make things easier for Valentin and his Hexwizard teammates so they don't have to worry about him along with themselves.

One time some chasers of an opposing team tried to knock him out of the way so their teammate could score a point because Ginyami was the Keeper. He wouldn't stand for the stooging, however, and blagged his opponents by grabbing their brooms by the tails to keep them from their goals. As a Keeper, he has also been known to defend the hoops from behind rather than the front by pushing the Quaffle out in a foul called flacking. Another time, he even performed a snitchnip by catching the snitch and waiting until his team's Seeker was close enough before subtly passing it over while appearing to whisper in their ear. As vindictive as he is, this student has also been known to purposefully collide with other opponents in order to try to knock them off their brooms (blatch), get in the way of the opponent Seeker (block), locking broomstick handles with an opponents' broomstick handle (blurt), and use his elbows excessively in order to hurt an opponent (cob). Since there are no rules to keep people from cheating in real life, why should he live by such rules during school where he should be preparing for real life? If the rest of the world isn't going to play fair, Ginymai doesn't plan to, either.[/reducio] Evasive Maneuvers: [reducio]Ginyami has always been quick to dodge things and people. Due to his deceitful personality, he has been known to upset and anger others before, causing them to want to retaliate, so he has always been careful to know how to escape their wrath. Things would be thrown and magic would be cast, but he would manage to evade it all. Even when he seems most carefree and calm, he is constantly aware of his surroundings and is ready to move at the slightest provocation in order to avoid getting snuck up on due to the many reasons people have to dislike and hate him. In school, when he was picked on or bullied, he would avoid his enemy and dodge their physical and magical attacks rather than fight back. As he much prefers slow and subtle retaliation, he usually withdrew in order to make plans for his indirect future revenge instead of standing off there and then. Other children considered him a coward for this behavior, but this belief of theirs never bothered him, egotistic as he was and is. Shaking off obstacles in his life and carrying on as if nothing were wrong was how he preferred to respond to conflict when he couldn't avoid it. As he got older, however, Ginyami got better and better at being nimble, whether it was to sneak up behind someone or to slip away out of another's grasp. This became especially useful in unofficial Quidditch games when he wanted to avoid being beaten down by Bludgers or knocked off his broom when Chasers tried stooging. Being lithe and difficult to hit along with knowing how to commit fouls with a lower chance of being caught makes Ginyami a rather tricky adversary as a Keeper. Someone with habits like Ginyami and as relatively weak and delicate as he is has to learn how to dodge if they don't want to get hit. Aside from often committing fouls in unofficial Quidditch, he doesn't know how to pick his fights and will openly insult those who he looks down on if he sees no merit in warming up to them. It's not that he means to instigate violence or loathing, but he tends to inspire those anyway due to his supercilious nature when he shows his true colors. Thus being cautious and ready for an attack at any moment has saved his hide many times when people have decided they've had enough of his awful tendencies.[/reducio] Evasive Maneuvers II: [reducio]After a good deal of practice on his own and playing non-official games of quidditch and airball, Ginyami's evasion has gone up considerably. If the rest of the world isn't going to play fair, Ginymai doesn't plan to, either.
Evasive Maneuvers:
ReducioGinyami has always been quick to dodge things and people.
Thus being cautious and ready for an attack at any moment has saved his hide many times when people have decided they've had enough of his awful tendencies.
Evasive Maneuvers II:

“I don’t care if you like Akihiko’s better, but at least say it!” Botan continued to be brave throughout the time he was home. WC:427[/reducio] Y2: Foulplay [reducio] Botan is an interesting boy. Why is Akihiko always beating you at… everything?” “I-” Botan stammered. It brought victory, and Botan liked to win.[/reducio]
Impartial (Y1) (403/400)
ReducioLooks had never been important for Haruka. Don't get her wrong, it's not that she's completely careless about her looks, but it had never been number one deciding factor for her.
It all started with her being too busy to care about looks of others. She would hurry down the hall at her school, not sparing a glance for whoever was the hot item this week. She didn't know, anyways.
"Haruka!" Her friend Ayako called to her. "Did you see that?" she asked excitedly. "Asahi just winked at me!!"
"Hmm?" Haruka looked to her friend. "Who?"
"Didn't you see?" Ayako stopped and whirled around, leaning closer to whisper. "That guy. Isn't he so cool?"
Haruka didn't see what was 'cool' about the boy. Asahi was just the regular Japanese half-blood student, and she didn't see why so many girls always mooned over him. His grades were average, and he wasn't even on any sports teams to make up for it.
"Oh.. I guess so? You like him?"
"Oh, yes. Do you think he notices me?"
Haruka furrowed her brow. So this was a... crush?
"Why do you like him?" she decided to ask, not answering her question.
"Hello? Aren't you blind? He looks like a movie star!" Ayako looked at Haruka as if she was crazy. "Who wouldn't like him? Oh! He's walking our way, quick, look unsuspicious!"
Haruka, already facing the opposite way, couldn't help but smother a giggle at Ayako's shallowness. Why would someone like another just because of their looks? She had known plenty of people who looked good but were completely the opposite inside.
It had also been part of her upbringing, in a way. Haruka had learnt many things about the magical and muggle world, and the fact that poisonous things had the brightest and prettiest colors intruiged her. She figured it was like this 'universal principle' that good-looking didn't necessarily mean good, and she stuck hard to this belief when she got into the age where everyone was getting crushes, which earned her a few side eyes and funny looks when she treated so-and-so indiferently.
It was as if Haruka was blind to looks, in a way. What she noticed first about a person wasn't their fashion sense, height, or any of that sort. Instead, it was more of their quirks, the way they held themselves, and their small habits that she seemed to notice and observe.
Statistical Relevance for Arcane Power (Y2) (540/400)
ReducioFrom a very young age, Haruka had been trained in sports that had required both power and grace.
Take figure skating, for example. The double axel was her favorite jump by far, even though it was unpopular with most people at her rink, since they weren't used to the foreward takeoff. And to be honest, it was hard. Haruka's coach had told her that it required a lot of guts, strength, and elegance to pull off the jump well, and she was determined to make it happen, which it did, in time. When taking her skating exam for that level, all of the judges grading her had commented on how strong but elegant her double axel was.
It was the same with karate; she had learnt how to make very hard and strong moves seem flowing and effortless through hours of training, and she entered Mahoutokoro with the same intent: to learn very hard spells and perform them as if it were nothing.
Quickly, she found that it wasn't as easy as she thought. Too much energy towards a spell could make it go wrong or off target. Haruka, who usually prided herself on her accuracy and precision, found that the bit of magical wood she called her wand was actually very hard to control, and much of her concentration's sole purpose was to make her spell actually hit.
Once they did, however, the target rarely sufferered any damaged, or significantly less than if another person's spell had hit them. At the end, Haruka narrowed it down to a simple problem (her arcane power was insufficient) through some testing.
She took one of her favorite spells, flipendo, a friend with similar grades, and a practice dummy.
"Please cast flipendo at this dummy," she instructed. "As hard as you can."
"Uh.... okay? Flipendo!"" The spell shot forwards with considerable speed, and immediately knocked the dummy back a few good meters upon contact with its shoulder.
"And may I ask how you do that? How you made it so powerful, I mean." Haruka asked after the dummy had fallen to the ground with a muted thump. She waa curious to see how her classmate had done it.
"I just try to keep my movements more controlled so that all my energy is more concentrated. But you also can't be too stiff, you know what I mean?"
"Aahhh, I see," Haruka said, even though she didn't. "Thank you for your help! I'll see you around sometime." She smiled warmly and once her classmate had left, she started practicing according to her advice. She tried to figure out her own ways of improving her power while keeping everything else: the accuracy and grace of the overal movement. She saw her final goal as being able to treat spellcasting like a dance; graceful and poised. Once Haruka was fixtated on something, it was hard to convince her to do anything else.
Soon, she began to see results from the long hours of solitary practicing. She could shoot her spells farther, and with more speed and force. It was satisfying, in a way, to realize that she could actually control her magic, to use it for herself, in a way that was both artistic and practical.
